According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney's 3D fantasy epic Oz: The Great & Powerful has grossed $2 million in its opening on Thursday night. This is an impressive gross, and the Sam Raimi-directed prequel is expected to gross somewhere in between $80M and $100M according to pre-release tracking. However, Disney is predicting a smaller $75M due to the bleak performances of other films domestically. Oz will likely gain the third highest March opening of all time, behind last year's The Hunger Games ($152.5M) and 2010's Alice In Wonderland ($116.1M). The latter, another Disney fantasy adventure, grossed $3.9M in its midnight runs. Do you plan on seeing Oz: The Great & Powerful this weekend?

Weak start to the spring season if you ask me. WB and Disney having flops.

Don't tell me goddamn Paramount is gonna win this month with GI JOE!
MisterNiceGuy - 3/8/2013, 9:16 AM
I think GI Joe will kill it this month at the box office. Unless people already moved on and forgot about it. What was the reason for the delay with that anyway?
mattbo - 3/8/2013, 9:31 AM
@MisterNiceGuy I totally forgot that G.I. Joe was coming out until I read your comment....think I'll wait for the dvd, not a huge fan of how they kill everyone off and its The Rock's movie...

anyways, seeing Oz tonight/hope its good. I need to find the books

Saw it last night and liked it a lot! It's not a "great" movie, but it's very good and quite an enjoyable time at the movies!

If you have a soft spot for things OZ, I would recommend.

Naw this movie will do well. You got to keep in mind that school is still not out so the midnight showings will not be that great. But I am sure parents will pack the movies this weekend with their bratty snot nose kids!

also random question but with Disney already writing a sequel what story would they most likely use? Anyone read any of the books? just curious.
JoeMomma29 - 3/8/2013, 9:41 AM
They can use the material from any of the books that are out there! They cannot reference the other movie because WB still owns the rights to those.

There are 14 books they can pull from if they choose.

Im taking the GF tonight or tomorrow. We both think it will suck..

Saw this last Sunday. It was good and seeing the origin of Oz was quite enjoyable.

ClarkFarley2012 - 3/8/2013, 10:24 AM

JoeMomma29 - 3/8/2013, 10:24 AM
Some of the books are good reads some are short, but there is enough info there to make several movies. Also in the other books there are many characters as well. The second movie Return to OZ did feature a few of those characters from the books.
Boogie138 - 3/8/2013, 11:38 AM

2013 films are flopping because there haven't been any good ones yet.

It's not like the old days where people will go because they have no better alternatives for entertainment.

People have some quality shows on TV now. Netflix. Hell, even PirateBay.

People aren't gonna flock to the theater just for the heck of it anymore. You've gotta give them a good reason.

A counter-argument to the current slump is immediately before the slump.

We had Django, Hobbit, Life of Pi, Les Miz etc all out in the theaters and all doing exceptionally well. Why? Because they're great [frick]ing movies that's why.

So Hollywood, stop playing the shitty ass blame game and put out some more quality movies.

@UrDick
(LOL)

I agree with you, good movie + good marketing = good box office

bad movie + good marketing = good box office in the first week then it goes down to hell after that

bad movie + bad marketing = shit movie + shit box office

"people aren't gonna flock to the theater just for the heck of it anymore, U gotta give' em a good reason to go to ...."

U have spoken truth sir !!!!
