Speaking with Collider at San Diego Comic-Con last week, director Jon M. Chu talks in detail about the third G.I. Joe film. He says that a release date hasn't been decided on yet, but both Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (Roadblock) and Bruce Willis (Joe Colton) are confirmed to return from Retaliation. Chu then states that they haven't finalized on whether or not they'll film the threequel in IMAX and/or 3D, and that a writer will be hired soon. The director discusses how the franchise's legacy will influence the next film, teasing new recruits and Hasbro's involvement. Finally, Chu says that he would love to see a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover if their respective worlds can make sense of each other, and he confirms that he's still attached to helm a Masters Of The Universe reboot (where it fits onto his schedule with G.I. Joe 3 in the mix is undecided). You can watch the full video interview below.

TIME INDEX:

1:07 - What he learned from making Retaliation and why that excites him for G.I. Joe 3.

1:41 - Release date for G.I. Joe 3. It hasn’t been announced yet, but he says Dwayne and Bruce only have a certain amount of time in their schedules — confirming that both will be back. “Do we need to get going? It would be really awesome to get going now.” Says they’ve discussed a variety of dates, but whether it’ll be in summer or not is up to the studio.

2:30 - Will they be shooting in 3D and/or IMAX? Says everything’s on the table, but having both shot 3D and post-converted, there are some benefits to post-converting.

3:13 - What did he learn from the fan reaction to the first film? Says he learned that they’re okay with stretching things a little further, noting that they can “double down on the adventure part of this movie.” He cautions that they won’t go sci-fi, but they can “push the boundaries of the world a bit more.”

4:25 - The legacy of G.I. Joe and how they can incorporate some of those things in the third film.

5:04 - Will we see the recruiting of a bunch of new Joes in the third film? Says they learned on Retaliation that it’s hard to have a lot of characters, but “there may be some really great moments like that.”

6:15 - Hasbro’s involvement in G.I. Joe 3. Says when they bring up an idea that they saw in the comic book, the people at Hasbro are able to say, “did you know that there are three different versions of this?”

7:02 Is someone writing the script for G.I. Joe 3 now? Chu says they’re currently narrowing down the writer.

7:55 - Has he thought about combining the worlds of Transformers and G.I. Joe since they’re both owned by Hasbro? Says he would love to, as long as the reality of their worlds matches.

8:40 - Other future projects. He’s still working on Masters of the Universe: “we’ll see how that matches up to my timing on G.I. Joe 3 and all that stuff, and where we’re gonna be with that.” Says he’s also doing a lot of digital things.

No one cares about this shitty ass movie franchise. Someone should reboot the [frick] out of this in like 20 years.
Highflyer - 7/26/2013, 12:41 PM
retaliation was a big improvement! I can say that much.
MrCBM56 - 7/26/2013, 12:45 PM
Just reboot it already. What a shit series. Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis made Retaliation tolerable.
DuckNation - 7/26/2013, 12:48 PM

These movies are bad but they're entertainingly bad and they're so over the top and nonsensical they're like critique proof lol, thats at least how I seem them anyway.

ABLEE337 - 7/26/2013, 1:31 PM
The only part I liked in the whole movie was when they were playing video games at the beginning.

2 was miles better then 1, but I hate they killed Duke. I was hoping that he was not really dead but just injured and captured. With an after the credits scene showing him alive but it never happened.
Bodwulf - 7/26/2013, 1:44 PM
Not interested until they get this guy.

I thought Retaliation was pretty entertaining
CherryBomb - 7/26/2013, 2:26 PM
Bring back Baroness, Lady Jaye and Cover Girl!!!
skullboy - 7/26/2013, 2:36 PM
Why does the Rock keep getting work? Sigh...
fceeviper - 7/26/2013, 2:42 PM
We need lots more Baroness!!
powerman86 - 7/26/2013, 3:09 PM
they need to put alpine or leatherneck in the movie
RJ4651 - 7/26/2013, 3:23 PM
I have yet to see retaliation but I heard they killed off Duke. I know Tatum wanted to get away from this franchise, but did they really have to kill Duke in order for that to happen? Not really a big deal to me, but I do appreciate how Hasbro is considering combining some of their biggest properties into a shared universe. That might actually be pretty cool.
Jebediah - 7/26/2013, 3:29 PM
Why does Bruce Willis still do movies. He's the most disinterested actor there is. Same old curmudgeon character in every movie. We get it, you're old and have to use blue pills to bang 20 yr old models!
brady12 - 7/26/2013, 3:46 PM
good thing i have my own opinion cuz you guys on this site hate every movie ever made i saw it a enjoyed it hope they come out with alot more
wookiefit76 - 7/26/2013, 4:43 PM
I heard he also said jokingly of course that he needs to get rid of Bay 1st.

As much as I'd love a crossover, I wish they'd just reboot booth franchises. I'd prefer the original GI Joe team from 1982. I remember I got most of those figures 1 year. Loved them ever since.

Forget the sci-fi, forget the ninja stories. Just give us a really good military movie with these guys as the team. Probably never will happen, but I can dream. Maybe in the 3rd they could do a flash back to the 1982 team. They could all wear the green and everything.
kazumama - 7/26/2013, 4:46 PM
Big improvement?must be kidding,Retaliation was poor as Uwe bowl directed movie..Then your expectation of action movie a bit low. Both The rock & Willis sure can return, but please change Jhn M.Chu as director
RPD - 7/26/2013, 4:47 PM
Yeah, Willis sucks anymore. He should just retire...
Gigacrusher45 - 7/26/2013, 5:21 PM
The second one was barely better then the first. I'm also surprised it made enough money for a third. Probably because the trailer was really good and it has The Rock in it. They need to not use mother f-ing shakey cam during the fight scenes and really show off Snake Eyes he's the only f-ing reason I'm watching these movies. Thank goodness they at least improved his suit in the second.
darkjoker1 - 7/26/2013, 7:55 PM
what a transformers crossover -_- wow thats pushing it i mean it was awesome in the comic and so badass but when you have mike bays transfromers and exposions for no reason it just ruins G.I. joe....
CaptainHulk3 - 7/26/2013, 8:16 PM
Gung-ho, Shipwreck, quick kick, beach head, the real doctormind bender, a real crew of Dreadknoks, & build to a Sepentor arc over 2 movies! Why are we as Comic Book guys so much smarter than these movie producers!????Anyone on this site (other than kingtrav/spidertrav) could write a movie script that sells any hardcore CBMer guys! Adhere to our character & story wishes ..........then we watch!!! Come on you owe us for Transformer's 2,3,4,.........until then reboot without Bay!!! He's an idoit at simple things if all else fails blow it up??? {Facepalms} yeah so ............do Gi Joe right or GTFO!!!!!!!!!
Logan5 - 7/26/2013, 8:31 PM
Sheeple: save yourself paragraphs or come off like they're bottling your sent.

Stalker, Gung-Ho, Shipwreck, Beach Head.., & many others should actually "be" in a GI Joe movie. I'm sorry, but the Expendables are more GI Joe than what we got.., no offense. I wouldn't have told Michael Jordan about his mustache either. :-P
