More From Writer-Director Jeff Wadlow On Planned X-FORCE Movie

Commenting on the spin-off tonally fitting in with the other X-Men films, writer-director Jeff Wadlow also says that X-Force explores the "grey areas" in the series and shares his hope that fans of the team will be happy with the movie.

Speaking with Bleeding Cool while promoting Kick Ass 2, writer-director Jeff Wadlow talks more about the X-Force film that he is writing and may end up directing for 20th Century Fox. He tries to avoid detailing any specifics, but he says that the spin-off will fit in "quite well" tonally with the other X-Men movies. "I’m very deep into it. I can’t really say much as Fox has asked me not to but, again, it’s not a reboot or reimagining of the X cinematic universe. Tonally it will fit in, quite well with all the other movies… but then I think the other movies cover a wide range of tones. It’s certainly not going to be tonally similar to Kick-Ass." He also expresses his hope that fans of the team will be happy with what the movie delivers, and that it will explore previously untouched elements. "I hope it will have what fans of X-Force will expect. I think it will be a little edgier, I think you’ll see some characters with different takes on what it means to be a mutant. There will be some grey areas that the movies haven’t yet been explored. It won’t be as “overt.” This movie is more about the grey areas in between."

Finally, Wadlow talks about bringing in "big" ideas from the X-Men universe and using them in an interesting way, and he reiterates comments about telling Mark Millar his ideas for an X-Force movie, leading to his being hired to write it. "I’m going to take some big ideas from the X-universe and flip them, I think in an interesting way. It’s hard to talk about that, though, without being specific. I probably shouldn’t have even talked about that at all because I can’t get into the specifics but I will say it’s similar to Kick-Ass 2 in that it wasn’t an open assignment, it wasn’t “We’re going to make an X-Force movie, who’s interested? Here’s what the movie’s going to be.” When Mark [Millar] got the job with Fox I said “The first movie you guys should make is an X-Force movie and here’s how you should do it.” And that got him excited, and that got the studio excited and that’s the movie I’m writing." Are you looking forward to the X-Force film?

Better be R. And bloody and vulgar as all hell.
darkspark - 8/6/2013, 8:50 AM
The problem is that Fox is making it...
marvel72 - 8/6/2013, 8:51 AM
if he uses the uncanny x-force team, this could well be the best x-movie ever!
MegaMatt - 8/6/2013, 8:58 AM
let me guess...WOLVERINE WILL BE IN IT!
GliderMan - 8/6/2013, 9:01 AM
They can do PG-13 with the violence/language of The Wolverine.
I think this will be great. If only the could work with Marvel Studios.
TheWolverine08 - 8/6/2013, 9:02 AM
Use Remender's X Force line up, and go with one of his story arcs. The movie will be awesome.
IM53 - 8/6/2013, 9:02 AM
Wadlow sit down with Rick Remender.....That is all
IM53 - 8/6/2013, 9:03 AM
Oh it's piggy !

Oh yea, and in before the Wolverine haters come in and start b%tching about how he shouldn't be in the movie so he doesn't "steal the spotlight".

TheDpool - 8/6/2013, 9:10 AM
Depends on which line up they use.

Hopes are high, expectations are low.
Just seen The Wolverine last night and it's starting to give me some hope for future Fox X-Universe movies.
thewonderer - 8/6/2013, 9:12 AM
Shame it isn't at Marvel Studios

So the main villain can be an actor and characters can have their whole origins altered.
DangerDuck83 - 8/6/2013, 9:12 AM
IMO regular movie goers are not ready for X-FORCE yet.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 8/6/2013, 9:13 AM
They confirmed a 5 member line-up.

Wolverine
Deadpool
Psylocke
Fantomex
Archangel

With appearances by Cable and such.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 8/6/2013, 9:14 AM
^ I meant that is what needs to be the 5 member line-up they said there would be.

GUNSMITH - 8/6/2013, 9:26 AM
IF THEY DON'T PUT THEM IN THEIR PROPER COSTUMES IN THIS MOVIE I'M JUST GOING TO BE SEVERELY PISSED OFF...

CherryBomb - 8/6/2013, 9:29 AM
Don't take the ideas and "flip" them, that's why the X Men movies get so much stick in the first place.

I hope it's not tonally similar. X Force has a roster of dangerous deadly mutants, it should be darker, edgier and way more violent.
Amazing512 - 8/6/2013, 9:30 AM
Wadlow should book a meeting with Remender immediately.
GUNSMITH - 8/6/2013, 9:30 AM
REMINISCE...

CherryBomb - 8/6/2013, 9:31 AM
Domino HAS to be in the movie :( she's so bad ass.

TimL - 8/6/2013, 9:41 AM
I wonder if they include Deadpool.
GUNSMITH - 8/6/2013, 9:42 AM
IF THEY CAN DO COSTUMES LIKE THAT ON A LOW BUDGET, YOU CAN DO THAT IN A FILM EVEN MORE BETTER AN PLEASE FANS DAMMIT...C'MON...FRIGG'N HOW MANY DAMN X MEN FILMS AND WOLVERINE FILMS WITH NO DAMN COSTUME...CAN WE DO A PETITION OR A SOMETHING OR WHAT?
GUNSMITH - 8/6/2013, 9:51 AM
ITS FOX..SO THEY'LL PROLLY GET JACKMAN FOR WOLVERINE REYNOLDS FOR DEADPOOL(FINALLY) DO NOT GET THE YOUNG DUDE TO PLAY ARCHANGEL GAWD..ANYONE HAVE AN IDEA WHO WOULD PROLLY BE A GOOD FANTOMEX? PSYLOCKE I'D PROLLY GET WHAT... MAGGIE Q?
SnapperCarr - 8/6/2013, 9:51 AM
Deadpool better not be [frick]ed up
RJ4651 - 8/6/2013, 9:52 AM
Cherrybomb is right, we must have Domino. No question about it
SnapperCarr - 8/6/2013, 9:52 AM
Wait who owns the right to Hydra Bob? I wanted to know because Hydra appears in the MCU.
Doughdzm - 8/6/2013, 9:56 AM
h ow can they have Cable if they killed off Cyclops and Jean. Think about it
Jackraow21 - 8/6/2013, 10:01 AM
Cable is X-Force, so he's a must. So is Deadpool if they want to spin him off into his own solo film. The other characters that I think are good to have are Domino and/or Psylocke, as well as Archangel if they can set it up somehow with Angel being turned into Death by Apocalypse. Wolverine I could take or leave in this. Might be cool to have him in it in a small capacity, but he's got his own films plus the X-men movies so he shouldn't be the main character. If he is, then FOX is truly a lost cause in terms of ever rivaling the Avengers' success.
JoJo1982 - 8/6/2013, 10:07 AM
It's going to be hard trying to have Cable in the movie since they already KILLED OFF his parents in the other x-men movies
TheReddestHood - 8/6/2013, 10:09 AM
My favorite X-Force Members have not yet all been on the same team at the same time. The team should be:

Wolverine
Cable
Deadpool
Psycloke
X-23
Warpath
SimonM7 - 8/6/2013, 10:10 AM
When I first heard about this, I had one, singular thought; if all this leads to is an awesome movie Psylocke, it'll be worth it.

Since then, of course, reality has caught up with me, and I've realised they're probably gonna do some sort of Expendables sans the self-awareness, with macho men doing macho men stuff. If Cable is in, there's no way we'll get the Psylocke/Wolverine dynamic from Remender's awesome UXF run.

To me, the chemistry and interplay between the members is the thing that'll make any X-Force thing interesting. However, as this thread suggests, many concern themselves mainly with "badassness" and costumes. The Wolverine dealt with themes that most people on here shrugged off as "boring" and "annoying", and with that in mind I guess I could see FOX simply making a brainless blockbuster with ripped dudes.

I kinda hate sounding so defeatist, but I think a smart X-Force could be very, very good. On a positive note, I think Jeff Wadlow may be an inspired choice. I'll be watching the direction especially close in Kick-Ass 2 next week.
Jackraow21 - 8/6/2013, 10:16 AM
Remender's run was pretty great through the Dark Angel Saga, but everything beyond that was pretty weak IMO. I think you can still have Cable in it and have some of the same dynamics with the team being divided on the concept of preemptively killing bad guys. Absolutely. Cable would honestly be the one who is more in the Fantomex role ("ends justifies the means" and having a hidden agenda).
CherryBomb - 8/6/2013, 10:17 AM
Of course Maggie Q has to be Psylocke.

SunfireUrA55 - 8/6/2013, 10:18 AM
Dear Fox,

Costumes and NO H.Jackman please.

That's all I ask.
