Woody Harrelson Gets "Mildly Retarded" for Defendor

Woody Harrelson goes from hunting zombies in Zombieland to fighting supervillains in Defendor!

Actor Woody Harrelson disappeared from the movie scene for several years to pursue environmental issues, but he's back with a vengeance, starring in the hit action-comedy Zombieland and in the upcoming "dramedy" superhero flick, Defendor, which was picked up by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group after a successful screening at the Toronto Film Festival.

Defendor tells teh story of Arthur Poppington (Harrelson), a wannabe superhero who thinks he can thwart Captain Industry, a (possible) drug and weapons dealer. Poppington makes his own costume and becomes "Defendor," venturing into the night to fight crime with grit, determination, marbles, and lime juice.

In a recent interview with THR, Harrelson described his character:

"It's a guy who's mildly retarded who thinks he's a superhero, only, of course, bullets don't bounce off and he gets beat up all the time. He's trying to fight crime and falls in love with the girl, played wonderfully by Kat Dennings, who's a crack whore. Peter Stebbings wrote and directed it; he's an actor. I was surprised how good it turned out, and luckily Sony thought so, too, because they picked it up (in Toronto)."

As for doring research for the role, Harrelson said that you can only do so much; the rest you just leave up to your imagination:

"Well, I had a specific thing in mind for what his condition was. I don't want to make it a movie about that, so I won't say what it was, but I did research on that ad nauseam and met with a lot of people who have that condition. The other part about wanting to be a superhero, I just used imagination."

Defendor also stars Sandra Oh, and Elias Koteas.

bsprecher - 11/13/2009, 11:46 AM
@tea: Nice! Great movie (most of it)!

@LEEE: Yeah, he stopped acting after Katrina and was busy doing environmental work, but then realized he could better use his celebrity to get the word out and went back to acting.

I for one am glad that Woody's back and that he's making these under-the-radar pics. Sometimes those are the best! This looks funny. Kind of an older, more grounded version of Kick-Ass.

I'll say it again, this is the BEST time to be a comic book movie fan!!!
bsprecher - 11/13/2009, 11:50 AM
@Bijous: Hey, where ya been, bro? It's gotta be a month or more since I saw you commenting...
Bijous - 11/13/2009, 11:51 AM
Sometimes life gets in the way, you know? Things are cool now. I'll be around.
ElBicho - 11/13/2009, 11:52 AM
Woddy's the man!!!

I thought Woody battled zombies in Zombieland, not Adventureland...
bsprecher - 11/13/2009, 11:53 AM
@Bijous: Yes, definitely the best time to be a CBM fan. Hopefully, it continues. It just takes one big, expensive mistake to make studios rethink comic books as viable movies, so keep your fingers crossed for Captain America and Thor!
bsprecher - 11/13/2009, 11:54 AM
@ElBicho: D'oh! Thanks for being my editor. I just watched Adventureland two nights ago, so it must have been on my mind...
Bijous - 11/13/2009, 11:56 AM
Do you'll think they'll do like the reverse with Defendor: make the movie and then come out with comic books?
bsprecher - 11/13/2009, 11:58 AM
@tea: Ha! [BTW, I read in one of your recent comments about your condition. I'm pulling for you, man!]

@Bijous: I hope not! I can't afford to buy anymore comics. I just came from Comics 'n' Stuff with $170 worth of books...after my 30% discount!
bsprecher - 11/13/2009, 12:04 PM
@tea: Good attitude, bro! I never had any injuries quite as traumatic, but I spent 6 months in bed, sleeping 20 hours a day, with a spiral fracture in my fibia and tibia and a wicked infection, so I can (somewhat) relate.
BillyBlack - 11/13/2009, 12:04 PM
Dig it. Woodrow is back on his game... well... except for 2012 but I guess he's gotta eat too.

I always felt that Harrelson was mildly retarded.
selinakyle - 11/13/2009, 3:03 PM

Thanks teabag :)
Upupandaway - 11/13/2009, 4:39 PM
@Brent: You, my friend, need a library card. Zombieland was awesome. I'd love to see him play a real comic character. Cable, maybe? IDK
Betty - 11/13/2009, 4:39 PM
Hey that's my future misses you're talkin' to there.
KUSlacker - 11/13/2009, 5:02 PM
@Bijous thank you...that was the most amusing thing i have seen in a long time funny
HarrisonBergeron - 11/13/2009, 6:06 PM
For those that haven't heard yet, Harrelson is in 2012.
Phinehas - 11/13/2009, 6:36 PM
MsKyle, convince me otherwise and I will.
selinakyle - 11/13/2009, 9:05 PM
Just saw 2012 and it wasn't that bad. And yeah...woody was in 2012....funny character.
Phinehas - 11/14/2009, 12:00 AM
When you have to preface by saying, "It wasn't that bad" then I am convinced that your expectations were lowered to such a point that they could be raised by any stimulus provided. These films have to be really good for me to see them. I don't want to pay premium cash for mediocre quality. Its like going to Red Lobster and getting a Happy Meal.
HarrisonBergeron - 11/14/2009, 1:06 AM
I thought 2012 was great, the movie is intense from start to finish, it does take some suspension of disbelief, but less than others in the cgi explosion genre, the story seemed well thought out through most of it, the science was the only real wobble(that is where the suspension of disbelief comes in).
selinakyle - 11/14/2009, 8:15 AM
ok maybe wrong choice of words cos was really expecting the movie to suck based on what i had been hearing. i enjoyed the movie and like harrison said, it was intense from start to finish. And surprisingly enough it had some funny parts too...especially from woody and cusack. And i think they did a good job with the visual effects. Its not a bad movie. I generally don't watch a movie based on critics' review.
selinakyle - 11/14/2009, 8:16 AM
and i didn't even notice that it was 3 hours long!
RorMachine - 11/14/2009, 11:09 AM
I love me some Woody! Can't wait for this movie, it looks great. I'm actually a bit miffed at its existence though, because iv been writing a very similar script! feck it though, the premise is an ancient one anyway.
Magicfingers - 11/14/2009, 10:03 PM
@thegreek- F@#$! I was going to post that clip of Stephen Lynch. Looks like I'm alittle bit slow...
;S durrr!
Sorry. I know, "You never go Full retard".
thegreek - 11/15/2009, 10:43 PM
@Magicfingers - LOL ;-)

Also i saw 2012 ... Freakin Blew balls... It was too long, the story development was lacks and it had moments where u can say wow pretty interesing but the rest of it sucks drawn out crap ... Plus i was upset because it isn;t the end it should have ...
