Star Trek 2: Back to the Future?

J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof hint at time shifts as a key plot device of the Star Trek sequel and say it's too early for Khan rumors...but that doesn't mean they're not true!
Director J.J. Abrams and writer/producer Damon Lindelof recently discussed the inevitable sequel to this year's mega-successful relaunch of the Star Trek franchise at the DVD/Blue-Ray premiere of their film at the Griffiths Observatory in Los Angeles and Sci-Fi Wire was on the scene to ask some of the questions that fans are dying to know the answers to.

As for when we'll see the next film, Lindelof said:

"I think that we would be hard pressed to get it on screens by 2011. If that’s the case, we’d better get to writing right now."

When asked if they had any story ideas in mind, Lindelof wouldn't specify how the characters would evolve or even at what period in time the film will take place in:

"One of the things we like to do as storytellers is drop you in the middle of something. And the question that you’re asking yourself is: Where am I in relation to the last time I left these guys? Could this be something that predated even, perhaps, some of the adventures that they had in the first movie? Does it happen five years later? Is it happening two seconds later? Who knows? So we’re not going to tell you."

As for the recent rumors about Khan making a return in Star Trek 2, Abrams said:

"We’re not even at that stage yet, but the fun of where we are on the sequel is we could use some of what was done before in a new way."

Of course, just to keep things cryptic, Abrams added:

"[This all depends on] if I, in fact, direct the Star Trek sequel. In theory, I would be available, and it would be fun to do. Since there's no script, it's hard to talk about directing a movie that the story doesn't even exist."

Star Trek 2: Search for Dong. =P

Man! I dig the the new one and I'm not a Trek fan.
SirPrize - 11/18/2009, 8:23 AM
I loved the movie but i made the missis watch it last nite and she refuses to talk to me....she hated it with a passion. :)
teabag - 11/18/2009, 8:27 AM
You know I'm starting to think that Abrams and his team are just trying to feel out fan reaction to story ideas. He keeps stating that the script is not done and they are still ironing out ideas.

Time travel is over done in Star Trek. It was fine for the first movie to give it a reboot, but continue with the concept tells me that the ST team lost all their creativity.

Original Kirk should stay far away from the new ST. Abrams needs to consult talented sci-fi writers for new ideas, just like Gene Roddenberry did for his original series.
stopdropandroll - 11/18/2009, 8:28 AM
It's the USS Tardis.
SirPrize - 11/18/2009, 8:31 AM
tea- Wha? How's that possible? You sure it wasn't Ultraviolet?

I don't think this guy is talking about time travel. I think he's talking about at what time are we plopped down into the story.
Betty - 11/18/2009, 8:32 AM
Whenever it comes out, I cant wait! Im not a fan of Star Trek but the movie was probably the best I've seen this year! :)
JoshW - 11/18/2009, 8:35 AM
stop@ i couldnt agree more. time travel is a crutch for most writers. it was essential in the reboot to start fresh, but why do more time travel now? you rebooted and reset the whole universe, theres plenty of things to explore besides time travel.
superdog - 11/18/2009, 8:35 AM
Here's a novel idea. people may think that the Khan thing would be too much of a rehashing and creative cop-out... it wouldn't be if the crew of the Enterprise met him under circumstances that require teaming up to defeat a common threat! It would be an M. Night Shamalamadingdong worthy twist!
MrJosh - 11/18/2009, 8:44 AM
just too many flaws implicit to time travel flicks. lets explore this new universe first. i want to see the repercussions in this universe with what nero had started.
Weeton - 11/18/2009, 8:45 AM
I'm more afraid of Shatner being in it than time travel.
Betty - 11/18/2009, 8:59 AM
I think that combining episode plots might be cool. Think about Khan trying to capture and control the Doomsday Weapon. Kirk and Spock dealing with both of those crisis. Oh and through in a love triangle with Spock, Scotty and Uhura.

Yah, Im nerd that way.
JYCowboy - 11/18/2009, 8:59 AM
Betty@ she loathed it...she said it was boring and pointless lmao bless her :)

I see no problem with a Khan movie, surely it would follow the shows apraoch to Khan not the movie :)
teabag - 11/18/2009, 9:09 AM
Boring and Pointless? :(

MsKyle08 - 11/18/2009, 9:28 AM
That has to be the stupidest title ever i thought wolverine's title was stupid. What is that? "Back to the future" is mikel J fox ganna be in it? Are they useing a deloren? They went back ion time so many times in these movies. No what has to happen is Patrik stuart has to put on his space suit again and the rest of the crue if there not makeing and x-men 4. And it was pointless i don't care about ayounger Spok and Kirk. And im sure you people liked the acting in it, you know nothing about star trek but yet you people like the movie.
Logan-X - 11/18/2009, 9:31 AM
yo...that is not the title dumdum. Reading is fundamental.
MsKyle08 - 11/18/2009, 9:35 AM
Logan-X@ wtf !!

teabag - 11/18/2009, 9:39 AM
None of the old cast are necessary now. We had Spock in the first one he was cool, the film was cool we've got the new cast time to move on with something completely bran new.
PRMR77 - 11/18/2009, 9:55 AM
All I know is that Spock is cute I wanna see more of him.
ragdoll03289 - 11/18/2009, 10:04 AM

Boring? I take it your missus is not a sci-fi fan teabag?
would she have prefered them teaming up with the good Doctor and battle Daleks :)
Shoot call me, crazy borgs and Daleks form an alliance har har
as if the Daleks could get along with anybody LoL
Harry... Harry Potter then? stop I'm insane.
georgia49th - 11/18/2009, 10:43 AM
Woah, Abrams isn't signed on to direct yet? What are they thinking? Sign that man up!

Bijous - 11/18/2009, 10:48 AM
georgia@ lol tell me about it...she hates anything to do with space :P
teabag - 11/18/2009, 10:48 AM
tea-- That Shatner/kittie one from twilight zone is damn funny! and what wrong with space? she no like sci-fi?
Betty - 11/18/2009, 10:53 AM
Maybe she'd like a good Western instead, take her to see Jonah Hex in 2010 . hahahaha
georgia49th - 11/18/2009, 10:53 AM
What the frakk ? what movie did you see 60f13....
Those Romulans traveled back in time to destroy the Vulcan's planet changed the past, therefore creating a whole new timeline.

georgia49th - 11/18/2009, 10:58 AM
Betty@ No she likes sci-fi just not the ones in space...ive tried but it aint happening lol

Georgia@ Dont get me started on her views on Westerns :O

6of13@ WTF...so why were they talking about time travel in the movie lol
teabag - 11/18/2009, 11:05 AM
@6of13, Georgia has it right! They went back in time and created another dimension not simply into another dimension slower than Spock primes!

@Tea,

There's something on the wing (pause)
Some....(Pause)...(Longer Pause)...thing!
TheAnswer - 11/18/2009, 11:11 AM
Answer@ lmao

TheAnswer - 11/18/2009, 11:33 AM
Sorry, you all.. I think we accidentally left the doggy door unblocked over at the Message Boards and Logan-X got out. We're trying to tazer him back in... Again, Sorry.

Seb@lol
teabag - 11/18/2009, 11:40 AM
Get the fack out of here with your Star Trek bullshet!

Star Wars RULES!!!
ster trek SUCKS!
LuV1138 - 11/18/2009, 11:46 AM
damn it. come on JJ, no more time shift nonsense either. you established a new world, make your movies take place in that world. i hope he doesn't ruin this.
CorndogBurglar - 11/18/2009, 12:00 PM
Star Wars is a cult classis no doubt but 'cmon the whole Darth Vader origin left us flat and wanting we didn't even get to see Anikin's first evil doings as Darth Vader.. how lame was that?
If not for Star Trek to pave the way, there would be no Star Wars.
georgia49th - 11/18/2009, 12:04 PM
The new trilogy of Star Wars was pointless to me!
They hardly went into the actual history of Darth
Vader! And the acting and story lines were very
static and slow! It seemed like they were some
entirely different sci-fi world than that of Star
Wars. I don't know what they were thinking save for
just trying to make more gobs of money! Hayden
Christensen was just awful!

Like you said Georgia@, there wouldn't be any Star
Wars without Star Trek paving the way into space!
I am a huge Star Trek fan and I loved JJ's Star
Trek! Now that's the way to make an old story new
again not the way Lucas did with the new Star Wars
trilogy!
DDD - 11/18/2009, 12:30 PM
I'm sorry, but I didn't get a sense that they want to go into the future from reading that article.

All they are saying is that the audience won't ever know what the time of the sequel is in relation to the time of end of the last movie. is it 1 year later, 2 years later, or even 5 years later? ...or will it occur before the events of the first movie?
Macksimus - 11/18/2009, 12:32 PM
@DDD

Yeah, I was hoping to see how Vader hunted down the remaining Jedi hiding out in the furthest reaches of the galaxy, but instead, we get a ****ing cameo.
Macksimus - 11/18/2009, 12:35 PM
the lasT 3 Star wars didnt do justice but the kenobi-anakin fight was amazing...darth maul died too early but still i love my star wars...star trek kicks ass...but not as much :)
ps - shatner is the man..id luv to see him in the next film...pine was amazing as was quinto
Anil Rickly - 11/18/2009, 12:38 PM
lmfao @ teabag
sausages!!!

and btw, MsKyle08, you don't like Star Trek? :(
u borin and pointless, not Trek lol

They should start the next movie very very soon after the events of the first one. These are new characters, we should be able to see a-ka-doodle-bunch of their lives and how they evolve
Fartman - 11/18/2009, 1:00 PM
there alread had time travel in the first movie but good article doe
flames809 - 11/18/2009, 1:56 PM
i love star trek. Dang...why you calling me boring and pointless. Hisss....
MsKyle08 - 11/18/2009, 2:30 PM
lol cuz you said "Boring and Pointless? :("

But i misread the forum so my bad ;)
Fartman - 11/18/2009, 3:08 PM
Logan-x? where....I'll send him back..........

Photobucket
TheSoulEater - 11/18/2009, 3:21 PM
How to place Shatner!
Does not matter that kirk died, leave time travel alone!
Simply have Pine take shuttle into cosmic cloud that accelerates his aging process! ta da Shatner comes back on bridge! Great entrance sequence! Just a sub plot so he can cameo quckly whilt bones corrects things! Just a thought!
ComradeX - 11/18/2009, 3:34 PM
i'll admit i had never really watch Star Trek before this movie except for a few episodes when i was little with my brother. However, this movie was incredible and actually got me interested in the series. J.J. Abram really did bring something amazing to the table for Star Trek, by not only making something enjoyable for old school fans but new fans like me and many other people i made see it.
Crazyhorrormovienerd - 11/18/2009, 4:00 PM
@ macksimus

you're right. it doesn't mention anything about time travel whatsoever. it just says they don't know how much time will pass between the first and the sequel.
CorndogBurglar - 11/18/2009, 4:11 PM
I never really liked the original Star Trek, but the new film is Awesome! I saw it with my dad (who is a fan of the old Star Trek) and my brother, and we all Loved it. A great film to see at the drive-in.
Magicfingers - 11/18/2009, 4:37 PM
Why do they have to use the Shatner? I say leave him in the old universe and use the Pine we have now. How hard is it to make a good original story that rocks, is this not their job???
Number21 - 11/18/2009, 7:36 PM
@ number 21

they didn't say their using shatner did they?? that would be awful
CorndogBurglar - 11/18/2009, 7:52 PM
@corndogburglar

No they did not but they have hinted at it in the past. I think Shatner should continue his music career and let Pine be the captain.
Number21 - 11/19/2009, 11:58 AM
@ number21

yeah, i could completely do without the shat being in the new one.

@ logan-x

are you kidding me?? you think the title of the sequel will be Star Trek: Back to the Future, yet you have the balls to talk shit to everyone that liked this movie?? you've gotta be the dumbest muther [frick]er on the planet, lol. i know plenty about star trek and LOVED it! this was the movie of the summer, no contest.
CorndogBurglar - 11/19/2009, 6:43 PM
I've yet to meet anyone who didn't like the new trek movie, untill logan x...
thwhtGuardian - 11/19/2009, 7:24 PM
@ whtguardian

thats because logan-x is a troll that never has anything good to say. star trek was easily the movie of the summer for me. i just watched it tonight for the first time since theatres, that movie is just so fun, how could someone NOT like it?
