Ever since Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire's back injury called into question his participation in Spider-Man 2, there have been rumors about his willingness to continue to portray Peter Parker/Spider-Man in subsequent films.

Notoriously quiet about his private life and about Spider-Man, Maguire opened up somewhat to The Boston Globe about the rumor that he was reluctant to return for Spider-Man 4:

"It’s not that I was reluctant. For me, it’s a big process to decide whether or not to do a role....I have to want to wake up in the morning and feel like I can’t wait to get to work. I’ve got to feel okay about leaving my kids for 12 or 13 hours a day for five months. It’s a big commitment."

Maguire went on to say that part of his decision to return to the role was that the script for Spider-Man 4 allowed for the development of his character:

"Hopefully I’ll be able to evolve the character in a new direction. He’ll still be Peter Parker, but I hope I can move him forward a bit and take him to a place where there will be new challenges for me as an actor."

1chris2 - 11/28/2009, 5:16 PM
well i hope to see lizard, more doc ock,and venom, carnage, mysterio, kraven, and the scorpion in the next trilogy.
punisher23 - 11/28/2009, 5:17 PM
The movie should be fine if Sony doesn't get involved in the film and lets Raimi use his story for the movie.I wouldn't want to wake up every morning thinking I starred in Spiderman 3, God that movie was awful.
1chris2 - 11/28/2009, 5:19 PM
and whats going on with the next hulk sequel cant wait for that to come out.
Upupandaway - 11/28/2009, 5:22 PM
Although vague, those comments actually made me more excited about this movie. I enjoyed the first two. Maybe we'll have a more grown up Spiderman here.
bsprecher - 11/28/2009, 5:24 PM
@Multi: Really, that's cool. It's a great newspaper!

LaffaTaffa - 11/28/2009, 6:03 PM
I've got a really good idea Tobey how about you evolve the way the character is suppose to evolve in the comics and cartoons you douche bag. Stop complaining and get paid to play the role you crying little bitch.
JoshWilding - 11/28/2009, 6:09 PM
As long as he doesnt evolve into THIS emo idiot again, then right now I'm still looking forward to Spider-Man 4! ;D

StephenStrange - 11/28/2009, 6:14 PM
That's funny. I thought I recalled Toby McWhinebag saying he he would not be back. I KNOW Dunst said it. I think she said that before 3 too.
StephenStrange - 11/28/2009, 6:14 PM
@ Ozy: Yeah. So bad it was laughable
peterparker420 - 11/28/2009, 6:22 PM
multi- It' funny how tobey interpited THAT as
"his DARK side" but it was funny!
the symbiote is suppose to bring out
the worst in people..and that IS
Tobey's worst! LOL!

Ozy- I really HOPE he does!
bleedthefreak - 11/28/2009, 6:23 PM
hopefully he evolves into a less whinny funny peter parker
JoshWilding - 11/28/2009, 6:28 PM
OZY: Funny? Man, we must have really different interpretations of funny - it just made me cringe with embarrassment and then disgust when I remembered how insulting the whole emo thing was to the comic books! :P

MULTI: LMAO! But seriously, how did that scene even make it into the movie?! Its [frick]ing awful...even the 90's Spider-Man cartoon portrayed a better "dark" Peter in the black suit! Its like whoever wrote the script read the original comic books whilst on LSD - hang on, thats the Smallville writers! :D
bleedthefreak - 11/28/2009, 6:36 PM
i wanted to see James Cameron do spider-man with DiCaprio i like him and think he could have played a better funny spider-man and the dude can act i have watched basketball diaries like 5 times in 2 weeks i was amazed by it
JoshWilding - 11/28/2009, 6:40 PM
OZY: Well, they werent laughing in the cinema I was in (hell, even the non comic book fans found it stupid from what I heard on the way out!) Have you read any of the comic books (either regular or even Ultimate) with Spidey in the black suit? He sure as hell doesnt act like this...

JoshWilding - 11/28/2009, 6:42 PM
In fact if theres even a single scene like the ones from that YouTube vid you posted in Spider-Man 4 then I think its fair to say that Raimi needs to step down!
bleedthefreak - 11/28/2009, 6:42 PM
@multi true he is to old now and Cameron submitted a script that was a printed out copy of somebody's script and he claimed to work with the writers and they all denied it so he had to bail on spider-man
peterparker420 - 11/28/2009, 6:43 PM
Ozy- hey in the movie theater I went to ME and
Everyone was laughting too!

Josh- yes it was cringe worthy also, but it
was funny to see "peter" act that way
I guess thats how "movie Peter"
expresses his "dark side"
and yes the 90's cartoon did do it better
and so did the NEW spider-man cartoon
the spectacular spider-man

anyone else watch that or was it just me?
I also watch wolverine and the x-men, and
Iron man: armored adventures
It's funny I'm 25 and still watch cartoons!
SupermanReturns2 - 11/28/2009, 6:44 PM
Tobey Maguire blows! Crybaby! No more spidey cryin' for God's sake! They should have given Spidey 2 to Gyllenhall and let him take it from there.
ukboy28 - 11/28/2009, 6:45 PM
i thought the emo scenes were typical of the quality of the movie........shite lol dont get me wrong tho there were a few moments of genius but overall shite, sam raimi his fault or not for 3 is still a great director and hopefully 4 will awesome.
ukboy28 - 11/28/2009, 6:49 PM
josh@ i remmember being in the cinema looking round and kids around 10 to 12 years old had a look of horror printed all over there faces at those emo scenes lol
ukboy28 - 11/28/2009, 6:51 PM
captainprog@ welcome mate
JoshWilding - 11/28/2009, 6:59 PM
OZY: Jeez, I had a low opinion of Spider-Man 3 but not bad enough to say that talentless Topher gave the best performance in the movie!

ukboy28: Haha, if you think that was bad then you should have seen the look of horror on my face! How're things up in Manchester? It was so bloody cold here today that I went out for less than 2 hours and came back with a cold, lol! It almost makes me miss the rain..! :D

CaptainProg: Welcome! I agree with you about Maguire which IMO is why either Jake Gyllenhall or Bret Harrison should now be cast as Peter Parker! :)
peterparker420 - 11/28/2009, 7:03 PM
JOSH- IMO i think Bret Harrison he's funny in reaper
and has the acting ability to portray
petey the way I think we all would like.
but for now it looks like TOBEY is it for 4, :(

CaptainProg- HELLO THERE! AND WELCOME TO OUR LITTLE
FAMILY!
ukboy28 - 11/28/2009, 7:05 PM
josh@ lol me to and my mates and nephew, then again we had that look all the way through the movie haha, flipin cold man and i mean cold ppl looked like hawaiian dancers the way they were shaking at my bus stop ha i miss the sun :(
InTylerWeTrust - 11/28/2009, 7:09 PM
Lolz, we can't forget this Spidey face either :)

Oh, and Bret for Spidey :)

JoshWilding - 11/28/2009, 7:10 PM
MULTI: Yeah, you are right about that lol! I dont know if you've seen the movie 'Zodiac' (directed by David Fincher) but he actually gave a bit of a Peter Parker-ish performance in that movie! Bret Harrison has been my top choice though since I saw him in 'Reaper' (brilliant show by the way) Though he needs to bulk up a little I think he would be the one actor who would portray the Peter we all know and love from the comic books! :)

peterparker420: Yeah, maybe if we're lucky though Maguire will give a better performance in 4 as we're stuck with him! We need a new actor though and Harrison fits the bill!

I read the Globe. In fact I have the paper right here. Tobey's a P****. I guess hes trying to tell us he wants his version of spiderman to be portrayed in a way that someone else will be able to come in and fill his shoes. IF that's the case he should have never taken the role for 4.
bleedthefreak - 11/28/2009, 7:13 PM
wow Bret Harrison is from reaper damn is that why i know him i haven't seen that show in a while back when i couldn't always watch it because my bed time on school days what season is it on i want to catch up
JoshWilding - 11/28/2009, 7:17 PM
TYLER: Aargh! Dont remind me of that one please! :P

ukboy28: Tell me about it! I lost all feeling in my damn hands at one point, lol!

Oh and for any of my fellow Bret Harrison supporters, check out the editorial I did way back in July, entitled "Why Bret Harrison is Perfect for the Role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man!" :D

bleedthefreak16: I hate to be the one to give you the bad news but the show got cancelled by the CW (who would obviously prefer to make crap like 90210 and One Tree Hill rather than anything original) at the end of its second season! :( You can find the show online to watch though at www.surfthechannel.com! :)
bleedthefreak - 11/28/2009, 7:26 PM
@josh24 thanks man but that's dumb but it works to my advantage so im not gonna need to watch much
InTylerWeTrust - 11/28/2009, 7:27 PM
CaptainProg: Welcome, and I agree about him getting in shape.

Tobey Maguire? More like Tubby Maguire! At least in SM 3 :)

Dunst needs to get the f*ck out of this franchise. She's terrible as MJ. Not only that, but she has made it obvious she has no interest in the franchise at all anymore, just get out of here!
dancingmonkey08 - 11/28/2009, 7:29 PM
Oh lighten up you guys who was "disgusted" by the emo scenes in Spidey 3, Im with Ozy, they were hilarious. Sure it was [frick]ing stupid and had no place in a Spider-man movie but me and my friends were still laughing at it!

And lets hope Tobey evolves his Peter Parker role to less of a whiney Emo faggot and more of a wise-cracking, badass superhero with an interesting alter-ego. (And Aunt May needs to bloody die, I dont need her to be putting me to sleep for parts of the movie!)

Nice article Brent

And this video suits this article perfectly:

dancingmonkey08 - 11/28/2009, 7:33 PM
@Ozy
No problem

Yea your right, Aunt May was alright in the first 2 but in the third one she was starting to get annoying for one reason which was given in the video above! lol
InTylerWeTrust - 11/28/2009, 7:34 PM
Ozy: She was okay in the first, was bad in the second, but was flat-out HORRID in the third.
bleedthefreak - 11/28/2009, 7:36 PM
@InTylerWeTrust82 my thoughts exactly she was the worst part of the second one and everything but the final fight in spidey 3 was horrid
Bud - 11/28/2009, 8:33 PM
I hope "evolve" means the Man-Spider! I'd really like to see the Neogenic Nightmare storyline portrayed through the script for Spidey 4. And I would really like to see the Lizrd and Morbius as villains!
Phinehas - 11/28/2009, 8:41 PM
"I’ve got to feel okay about leaving my kids for 12 or 13 hours a day for five months. It’s a big commitment."

Its comments like this that make people that actually work for a living resent people like him.

Aunt May doesn't need to be killed off. They just need to make the movie interesting.
Phinehas - 11/28/2009, 9:47 PM
Is it the character of Aunt May or the director and the screenplay that are in error? MPP may have the answer here, now that CBMs are finally growing up (a la Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and The Dark Knight) maybe its time to update Spiderman into a movie that is closer to the comics instead of trying to reach a broad appeal.
ATOMbomb - 11/28/2009, 10:04 PM
He must not understand the duality of the character, but no one else could be Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Topher Grace would have been alright if the look of Venom wasn't so screwed up. I think the whole character sucked, I think Venom is awesome always have but they screwed it up. If they would have cast someone else and did more make-up then straight CGI it would have been almost just has good as Spider-Man 2. There is a lot to prove with Spider-Man 4, I can't wait to see it. I truly believe The Lizard will be the villain.
Phinehas - 11/28/2009, 10:38 PM
And before??? LOL
LaffaTaffa - 11/28/2009, 11:03 PM
I agree with Tyler and Josh. They should pick him. He is funny in Reaper. Let him bear the torch of Spidey. I'm sure he would do a fantastic job.

I have to ask, What is it with Sam Raimi picking ugly women as the lead roles for each movie. Kirsten Dunst is fugly. Bryce Howard wasnt much to compare to either. I'll bet you if he could cast Hellen Keller as Black Cat he would.
THABATMAN - 11/29/2009, 12:03 AM
Bryce Howard isnt bad. but i do agree with you on Kirsten dunst
