Matthew Vaughn Discusses Kick-Ass

The director of Layer Cake and Stardust talks about using green screens and getting Nicolas Cage involved in his new film, Kick-Ass!
It's hard to imagine a "superhero" movie that doesn't involve the extensive use of green screens and digital shots, but in a recent interview with Craze, director Matthew Vaughn said that he he tried to use them as "little as possible" in his latest movie, Kick-Ass.

"I hate it. F*cking green screen. It’s like, for me, CGI is for when you really can't do it in camera. I use it when I have to, but I just think it’s fake."

Vaughn defended his "less is more" approach to filmmaking and said that it could also work on a major studio release.

"I’d like to do a big studio franchise in this style, but yeah. I think the studio movies… Well, The Dark Knight showed that you can, and Iron Man in a way, showed that you can mix it up a bit. Yeah, I’d love to do a big studio flick."

Vaughn said that Kick-Ass is not just about "kicking ass." The main character, Dave "Kick-Ass" Lizewski (played by Aaron Johnson), learns some valuable life lessons.

"What Dave learns is, he goes on a big journey. At the beginning of the movie, he says, 'Why does nobody help people?' Then he falls in love with someone, so he stops helping people. And then he starts helping people. And he realizes that the reason it stops most people from helping people in danger is that they’ve got to lose. And he realizes that a real hero is someone who, even with something to lose, still does, takes a risk."

As for veteran actor Nicolas Cage's involvement in the film as Damon "Big Daddy" Macready, Vaughn said that it wasn't a hard sell.

"Nic is a big comic book fan, and he just read the script and went, 'This is cool. I’m in.' Simple as that. You know, Nic wants to do good work, and he was very cool. Literally, we sent him the script and he read it and said, 'I’m in.' So it was a very easy process."

Kick-Ass also stars Chloe Moretz as Mindy "Hit Girl" Macready and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Chris "Red Mist" D'Amico.

Kick-Ass
tyko450 - 12/4/2009, 7:23 PM
Nice article. I'm glad that there is as little cgi as possible. It's way too overrated. cgi takes away from the realism in films. I like how JJ Abrahms tried the same technique in Star Trek. It reminds me of the way hollywood used to be, and I definitely miss it.

But back on topic, kick ass is gonna be amazing. The comics are great, and i can't imagine how the movie could fail (apart from the Marge Gunderson accent from Aaron Johnson). Nic Cage is a plus.

supermarioworldE - 12/4/2009, 7:27 PM

peterparker420 - 12/4/2009, 7:37 PM
Great article Brent! Even though I havent yet read this series, I cant wait for the movie!

Have any of you guys heard about Millar's new project for Icon, 'Nemesis'? This is how he describes it...

"Nemesis" is a reversal of the Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark archetype. What if this genius billionaire was just this total shit, and the only thing that stood between him and a city was the cops? It's Batman versus Commissioner Gordon, in a weird way. Or maybe a super-villain version of "Se7en." A billionaire anarchist up against ordinary people."

If thats his next comic book to be made into a movie, I cannot wait! :) The best part is, Steve McNiven is drawing it!
JoshW - 12/4/2009, 7:38 PM
josh- I NEVER HEARD OF THAT!..looks and sounds amazing
I am VERY surprised you never read KICK-ASS.
it is a must read.but I'm sure you already knew

ONE WORD>>>>>>>>>>>>>EPIC!!!
peterparker420 - 12/4/2009, 7:49 PM
PETE: I fell WAAAY behind on comic books when I was doing my last year of exams in school and its taken me over a year to catch up so Kick-Ass somehow managed to fall underneath my radar! Mark Millar and John Roita Jr is a dream team for me!!

Damn, I wish i lived in the US! Its hard to find many decent back issue stockists in the UK - eBay is ok some of the time but when I was behind on Invincible Iron Man a little while ago, it cost me £25 for a copy of issue #8 because I could find it nowhere else! On the other hand, I managed to buy Astonishing X-Men #25-#30 off eBay the other day for only £3 so its not all bad, lol! :P
JoshW - 12/4/2009, 7:50 PM
Oh, and you can read the full interview about 'Nemesis' over at...

http://www.comicbookresources.com/page=article&id=23934 :)

And I agree PETE, Millar + McNiven = EPIC!!!
JoshW - 12/4/2009, 7:57 PM
cool article....seems kinda of a paradox. He said he would like to do the Avengers, even tho that movie would have alot of digital and cgi shots. well we got thor, cap to get through and then we get the AVENGERS

Aki87 - 12/4/2009, 7:59 PM
@josh: Thanks for the tip! That sounds really cool.
Brent Sprecher - 12/4/2009, 8:26 PM
@BlackAirs87: Yeah, I thought that same thing. I think he said what he really felt, which was that CGI sucks, and then he realized what he said and didn't want to ruin his chances of landing a big gig so he back-peddaled a little.

"CGI sucks, but...I'll direct Benjamin Button II if the money's good!"
Brent Sprecher - 12/4/2009, 8:28 PM
I'm sure that everyone's seen it already, but just in case...

Brent Sprecher - 12/4/2009, 8:29 PM
never read the comics but heard positive stuff, liked the trailer tho, defo going to check this out.
ukboy28 - 12/4/2009, 8:32 PM
brent@ poster looks very cool, i did like layer cake., not seen stardust.
ukboy28 - 12/4/2009, 8:33 PM
@ukboy28: Yeah, Layer Cake was pretty awesome! It came out right when I was lamenting that fact that Guy Ritchie would probably never make another Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch (because of his marriage to Madonna, which is now over). It's in the same vein as those films. The ending though....ouch!

Stardust was...not terrible.
Brent Sprecher - 12/4/2009, 8:36 PM
Brent: No worries man! :) After Civil War and Old Man Logan I was hoping that this would be another Marvel project for the two after I saw the teaser a few weeks ago but this idea sounds even more brilliant! I cant wait until issue #1 in March 2010 I think it is!

1259891465
JoshW - 12/4/2009, 8:39 PM
@brent. Yeah if its good enough money. Even chris nolan who prefers 100% realistic movies had to indulge in come cgi for the dark knight, the best known scene of that was the helicopter crashing. Speaking of Avengers......who would be a good director for it? Not Lucas or Cameron, both would indulge with too many cgi shots. How about the newbie director who directed Tron Legacy?
Aki87 - 12/4/2009, 8:40 PM
brent@ that ending caught me off guard man, who would of seen that coming???

have you seen rock&rolla?
ukboy28 - 12/4/2009, 8:42 PM
@ukboy28: Yeah, absolutely! I love British gangster movies. They're filled with richly textured con men and "proper villains." Ritchie really woke me up with Lock, Stock and I'm glad he's back!
Brent Sprecher - 12/4/2009, 8:53 PM
BlackAirs87: I personally think that J.J. Abrams is a good choice although my #1 pick would be Jon Favreau! Depending on how Captain America and Thor turn out though, ohnston or Branagh could be good choices as well!
JoshW - 12/4/2009, 8:55 PM
@josh24: If you don't mind my asking, where did you find those images? Are there more? I'm really intrigued by Millar's story.
Brent Sprecher - 12/4/2009, 8:56 PM
brent@ me too, lock, stock was awesome and funny, rory breaker is one of the funniest bad guys ever, a midget with an afro, genius lol

ukboy28 - 12/4/2009, 8:59 PM
brent@ oh and if you havint already seen harry brown then do so mate, its one of the best films of the year and the best british film out this year to.
ukboy28 - 12/4/2009, 9:01 PM
Lock Stock & 2 Smokin Barrels is one of THE BEST gangster movies of all time! Great story, innovative directing, excellent sound track! Love it! Great movie to watch when you're drinkin' with your buddies. This sequence is classic:

It goes into a lot more deatil and is a really interesting read! :)
JoshW - 12/4/2009, 9:05 PM
@ukboy28: Yeah, thanks for reminding me. I saw a trailer some time ago and then kind of forgot about it. It's getting great buzz. I'll have to look into it.

@Bijous: We can always count on you for the vids!

@josh: Thanks!
Brent Sprecher - 12/4/2009, 9:07 PM
@josh: Hey, I just checked that link and it said that the page was not found. Are you sure that's the right one?
Brent Sprecher - 12/4/2009, 9:09 PM
how do i post videos here????

bijous@ i love that lock, stock scene and ah the trailer :)
ukboy28 - 12/4/2009, 9:09 PM
@Bijous: Yeah, great music in all of Ritchie's films. And, that scene where he gets up from the table and The Stooges kicks in...friggin' awesome! Unfortunately, I've felt that way after a bad beat at the poker table.
Brent Sprecher - 12/4/2009, 9:12 PM
@ukboy28: I couldn't post two of the scenes that I wanted to because they had boobs and too many f-bombs, but this is an excellent clip.

I take it from your user name that you are in the UK right now? I've only been to London once, for three days, but I had a great time. I stayed near King's Cross and saw all of the sights.

As for vids, I just go to YouTube and copy the "Embed" code that's to the right of the vid and paste it in here.
Bijous - 12/4/2009, 9:14 PM
Brent: Huh, thats weird - I just checked and it is the right one but even when I copy I try and follow it, it says the same thing! Just go to www.comicbookresources.com and you'll see it on the main page there! The articles headline is "Nemesis" Asks: What if Batman was The Joker? Sorry about the mix up with that!
JoshW - 12/4/2009, 9:14 PM
@Brent: Ahhhh, sh#@! You play too? Texas?
Bijous - 12/4/2009, 9:15 PM
@josh: Thanks, I will.

@Bijous: Oh, yeah. I play everything! One of my other jobs is as a casino consultant. I've been doing it for about 8 years. I get paid to gamble. It's pretty sweet. When I play for fun, it's always Hold 'Em.
Brent Sprecher - 12/4/2009, 9:17 PM
bijous@ lol there's alot of swearing in that movie, yeah in good old rainy manchester and cool man, i havint been london in a while actually, where are you from?

josh@ hows the weather mate???
ukboy28 - 12/4/2009, 9:20 PM
@Brent: What? Really? That's cool! Me and my boys play Texas, like, three times a week. Not high stakes or anything, but it's kind of the central component in any get together.
Bijous - 12/4/2009, 9:20 PM
bijous@ oh how rude, thanx for the tip on the vids.
ukboy28 - 12/4/2009, 9:21 PM
@ukboy: The States. All over, really. I really wanted to get out to the country and see something when I was in London, so we drove out, saw a bunch of raggedy looking sheep and drove back. I went to one really great underground club and ate a lot of Indian food. Sorry, but British food is a tad bland for me. Fish cakes? Ew.
Bijous - 12/4/2009, 9:22 PM
bijous@ oh how rude, thanx for the tip on the vids.

LEEE777 - 12/5/2009, 3:31 AM
They don't have any Kick Ass comics at the moment, but I've found alot of hard to find back issues for great prices at NEWKADIA. They have an extensive library and pretty good service. Never had a problem with them.

Also if they don't have a particular issue, check back in a few days, their stock is constantly changing.
