Robert Rodriguez held one of the more unusual—and kick-ass—parties for Machete during Comic-Con, complete with low riders, a taco truck and free tequila!
In my third year at the San Diego Comic-Con as a member of the press, I've been to many industry parties already. Typically, you'll see a few cast members, but the highlight will be the free food and drinks and whatever other freebies are on hand. But, when writer-director-producer Robert Rodriguez throws a party, you know it's going to be something different.
Instead of holding his Machete release party in a posh hotel, Rodriguez held it in a parking lot near the convention center. Surrounded by a chain-link fence, it was strictly invitation only, unless you happened to get one of the fliers being handed out on the streets…or you're me and you simply con your way into the party with a little smooth talk!
Inside, there were several pimpin' low riders on display, but the highlight of the attraction was the taco truck. I ambled my way up to the truck and who should be in the service window, but none other than actress Michelle Rodriguez herself!
I was stunned to find the actress actually serving tacos! She asked, "What can I get for you, man?" I hesitated. "Uh, whatever you want to give me," I said. She smiled and asked, "How about a beef taco?" She could have asked, "How about a sh*t taco?" and I probably would have said, "Okay." I took my taco and went over to the bar where they were pouring free tequila. The rest is a blur...
Michelle Rodriguez on showing skin in Machete:
"Now that I've established that...you know, I've pretty much made my way here, respectively, I can do whatever the hell I want. If I want to do a porno, I can gladly do it tomorrow and be completely comfortable with it. That's the whole thing; it took me ten years to get comfortable, to that place where I can be chill..."
In response, Danny Trejo throws in:
"For the first five years of my career, I never had a shirt on."
I snagged this invite after I was inside, just in case anyone asked me to present mine.
Here are some pics from the event...
