UPDATED: Mark Millar Discusses Kick-Ass at WWC

Mark Millar took the stage at Wizard World Chicago to discuss the process of adapting the popular Kick-Ass comic book into movie form.
After being introduced by Wizard editor Mike Cotton, famed comic book writer Mark Millar took the stage at the Wizard World Chicago comic convention to explain the process of translating his Kick-Ass comic book into a major motion picture picture directed by Matthew Vaughn.

Millar:

"[Matthew Vaughn's] a good pal of mine, and he loved the book before it came out. He saw the scripts ahead of time because he likes to see what other pals are up to. And, he said, 'I really want to make this movie.' And, what I normally do with like Wanted is that we'll make the comic, and then an agent takes it out to all the whores in Hollywood, and they start bidding, and it's all out of your hands. Hopefully it all works out. Luckily Wanted did. It worked out good. But what happened with this is that it's very difficult material. I thought, 'They'll never make a movie out of this. It's got a ten-year-old superhero assassin swearing' but Matthew loved it. That was all the stuff he liked about it. So he said to me, 'Look, can we just keep this away from agents, and I'll just get working on the screenplay and give it to Jane Goldman to polish and add our own stuff, and we'll do it as pals?'

What happened was he wrote this great screenplay that everybody loved. There was nothing like this before. It felt as radical to superhero movies as the 'Pulp Fiction' screenplay felt to crime movies. Then we took it to the studio that he normally works with, and they were like, 'We love this...but can you take out the swearing, the violence, the ten-year-old assassin...'"

When it was apparent that they would never be able to make the movie that they wanted to make with studio financing, Matthew Vaughn decided to take matters into his own hands and rounded up $50 million in investments to make the picture. Millar said that he was in awe of Millar's faith in him and his ability to generate the necessary funds, but was equally fearful about the financial risk his friend was taking on his behalf.

According to Millar, there was only one test-sreening of the nearly-completed film, and it scored 100% with the test audience, including the elderly:

"...some of the people were like 60-year-old women. They must have been just out of prison or sex offenders or something like that."

Millar made a plea to the audience, telling them that their support will likely determine whether Kick-Ass receives a theatrical release or go straight to DVD:

"If you can go on the internet immediately after this happens and just give your honest opinion – I'm pretty sure you'll like it because it's really well made and really well done – but that's the one favor I'd ask everyone. You may think it's shite. I hope you love it because we do."

When asked about the rumors that he and Vaughn were conspiring to produce a sequel to Superman Returns Millar said:

"There was no interest in me, but they went to Matthew because he's a very well-liked Hollywood director. I love Superman, but Kick-Ass has been such an amazing experience that I realized I'd rather be George Lucas. We just go off and make our own movies and we own them...that's the model I'd like to follow with future stuff."

Talontd - 8/8/2009, 3:26 PM
oh yea, and btw, this is how ALL FILMS should be made. This is a perfect example of how a studio would've f*cked up a movie....Kick-Ass without swearing is like saying SUPERMIKE is AWESOME.....it just don't make sense!
Talontd - 8/8/2009, 3:31 PM
Its funny how alot of ya thought this was gonna be a WANTED 2 or something lol!

LEEE777 - 8/8/2009, 3:41 PM
This movie will KICK...BUTT!

Rorschach01 - 8/8/2009, 4:00 PM
Millar is a communist.
Skyh00k - 8/8/2009, 4:22 PM
Millar is the best damn comic book writer there is today!

Anyone know whether his Ultimate Avengers #1 is worth buying?
joshw24 - 8/8/2009, 4:45 PM
Do you mean The Ultimates? Or is there a new title? Ultimates 1 is class, just look at it as a completely separate entity to the marvel Universe and you will love it.
Rorschach01 - 8/8/2009, 5:03 PM
Ultimates 1 is really pretty awesome IMO! I'm a big Millar fan! Mon The Scots!!!
TheAnswer - 8/8/2009, 5:23 PM
Rorschach01 & TheAnswer: nah, im talking about the new series that Miller has started writing called 'Ultimate Avengers' which apparentkly carries on after Ultimatum. Ive read Ultimates 1 and Ultimates 2 (which i agree, were both excellent) skipped Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum due to the awful reviews and wondered if this new series was worth getting into! Heres the cover to issue #1!

joshw24 - 8/8/2009, 5:33 PM
This will at least see partial release, if not a wide release. It will end up like Star Wars, with a limited run, followed by massive buzz and a wide release.
FateSucks - 8/8/2009, 5:34 PM
Josh@ I've not read Ultimatum yet cos I'm a couple months behind on my comic buying. Is this the start of the release of the "Ultimate Comics" Line?
TheAnswer - 8/8/2009, 5:45 PM
btw In that pic does Hulk look like he might be trying to have too much of a good time?
TheAnswer - 8/8/2009, 5:46 PM
ultimatum has ended and new ultimates is looking up...im not an ultimate spidey fan but with the ultimate ff4/xmen no more...ill have to take it all in...millar has come back cuz after ultimates 1/2/3 all did well in my opinion, he's gonna try to rock again...i think his civil war rocked, his ff4 sucked but with this new ultimate team line up i wanna see what millar is gonna do...and he's leaked that cap america has an illegitimate son aka the ultimate red skull...so it has begun
Anil Rickly - 8/8/2009, 5:48 PM
@The Answer: Well, the Hulk is looking at Sue Storm while he does...whatever he's doing with his fist...
Brent Sprecher - 8/8/2009, 5:49 PM
No way! I thought Ultimatum was going to mark the end of the Ultimate series altogether! I'll check it out if Millar is behind it.

Is the final Old Man Logan out yet?
Rorschach01 - 8/8/2009, 5:49 PM
we also have ultimate blade, ghost rider, wasp 2 and a black russian thor, and an african hulk...so the new ultimates will hit or miss hard!!!
Anil Rickly - 8/8/2009, 5:49 PM
ATTENTION: NEW POLLS

I'm going to start up two new polls for Captain America Casting: Fan Edition, but I need more suggestions. Once all four actors for each part are locked, I will make official polls.

For Bucky, we currently have these suggestions:

Aaron Ashmore
Bret Harrison
Daniel Radcliffe
Freddie Highmore
Garrett Hedlund - locked
Ian Somerhalder - locked
Jamie Bell
Johnathan Taylor Thomas
Justin Chatwin
Taylor Lautner
Wentworth Miller
Zack Efron

For Red Skull, only these names have popped up:

Bill Nighy
Bruce Willis
Daniel Day Lewis - locked
Ed Harris
Jackie Earle Hayley - locked
John Glover
Mads Mikkelsen - locked
Michael Sheen
Ralph Fiennes

When you're done reading this cool article about what's sure to be a "Kick Ass" movie, go over to Vote for Cap! Top 4 to write-in the names of the actors you want in the polls.

Jensen Ackles will not be in consideration for this part, since he already won the vote to play Captain America, so get over it now.

Brent Sprecher - 8/8/2009, 5:49 PM
Anil@ Please dont give any more away! I actually stumbled upon the Red skull thing earlier on tonight but I'm going to catch up after my exams so no more spoilers please. ;)
TheAnswer - 8/8/2009, 5:50 PM
Rorschach01: WOLVERINE: OLD MAN LOGAN GIANT-SIZE #1 is out September 23rd! Heres the cover...

TheAnswer: im also a few months behind but ill probably pick up back issues of Ultimatum just to see what it is everyone seems to hate so much! well spotted with the Hulk - man that is a dodgy pic! suprised Marvel didnt pick up on that, lol!

Anil: with Millar writing it im hoping it will be a hit like pretty much every other brilliant bit of writing he's ever done! i think ill pick this up though but not USM because as i told you before - i pretty much cant stand Bendis and especially dislike the way he writes Spider-Man!
joshw24 - 8/8/2009, 5:56 PM
I've also just realised spidey seems to have finished as well if you look between his legs! :{
TheAnswer - 8/8/2009, 6:01 PM
Ultimate shite!!! ; D
LEEE777 - 8/8/2009, 6:02 PM

Anil Rickly - 8/8/2009, 6:24 PM
Brent: defintely agree with you there! i dont think ive ever read comic books like that where my mouth was constantly falling open in shock and awe, lol! i heard a rumour that in the near future, Miller might return to write more stories based in the 'Old Man Logan' universe! lets hope so anyway! :)

LEE: how can you call The Ultimates 1 and 2 shite? they were some damn good comic books in their own right!

TheAnswer: lol, whoever drew that cover has some serious issues by the looks of it, hehe!

Anyone read Captain America: Reborn #2 yet? What did you guys think?
joshw24 - 8/8/2009, 6:27 PM
No problem Anil! This is the only site I frequent when i'm behind on my stories!! ;)

TheAnswer - 8/8/2009, 6:28 PM
@Answer...it's going cool man...thanks for asking...i wanna save the world, then save some cheerleaders lol...they'd make nice nookie buddies under our caribbean sun haha

@josh....REBORN 2 was fine as hell...i didnt like the lost in time theory at all...hated it for wayne and for cap especially...but it hurt to see cap bein reborn at a time when bucky is owning cap and also in the avengers...bucky cap is stable and growing so it killed me that rogers was gonna return...but after bein skeptical at the end of issue 1...now im onboard cuz #2 was damn good...made me 4get my qualms and i just wanna see how reborn plays out...i knew bru wud get me into this sooner rather than later...but i still vote for rogers becomin the new fury and buckycap remaining....sad to say that nick fury's time may end with the dark reign
Anil Rickly - 8/8/2009, 7:03 PM

Brent Sprecher - 8/8/2009, 7:08 PM

I will pull some strings where I can and fight for good looking Cheerleaders!! Also how do you know what a munter is? (apart from it kinda seems obvious from what is sounds like!)
TheAnswer - 8/8/2009, 7:35 PM
Old Man Logan was Wolverine's TDKR! I just wish it ran a bit longer. I can't believe some of the stuff that went down in it either Josh. Hawkeye! I never liked him until i saw him as a blind old man! And the fight between Logan and Red Skull last issue was class.

TheAnswer, we call em Mingers!
Rorschach01 - 8/8/2009, 8:46 PM
We call them mingers too but I enjoy Munters!!
TheAnswer - 8/8/2009, 8:48 PM
Hold on, That sounds awful!!!
TheAnswer - 8/8/2009, 8:50 PM
Old Man Logan was INSANE! Can't wait for last issue!
Scarycherry - 8/8/2009, 11:58 PM
I plan on picking up Old Man Logan when it hits trade. I not a big Wolverine fan, but I love a good story. Last Wolverine arc I followed was Evolution, where he decapitates Sabertooth.
longbowhunter - 8/9/2009, 3:03 AM

Go over to Vote for Cap! Top 4 to write-in the names of the actors you want to see play Bucky and Red Skull
Brent Sprecher - 8/9/2009, 11:42 AM
I'm getting jazzed about this movie, every bit of info that comes out about it is sounding better and better....need to try and find the books to read beforehand, seems like it is right up my alley.

Funny that he makes the Pulp Fiction comparison, that was sort of the vibe I was getting from it as well.
Chimichanga - 8/10/2009, 9:39 AM
@Chimi: Yeah, I think it's going to be really good, too!
Brent Sprecher - 8/10/2009, 3:56 PM
