Clark Gregg On AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.; "It Really Focuses On The Humans"

During this year's Saturn awards, Coulson himself confirms that he has no idea where the plot for Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is heading. He also discusses the usage of ordinary humans to drive the show, coming back from the dead and more. Watch the interview after the jump!

Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films, as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson's team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage; Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot and martial artist; Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer; and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker, Skye (Chloe Bennet).

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s first television series, is from executive producers Joss Whedon (Marvel's The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who co-wrote the pilot (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) also serve as executive producers. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

Wow, riveting stuff. Never heard any of it before.
SuperiorMrGod - 6/29/2013, 10:48 PM
Really who gives a shit about that this abomination of a show. And ya, like Mark said we've heard this before.
TheRationalNerd - 6/29/2013, 10:54 PM
@MrGod

I agree it looks way too cheesy. I would honestly love to see a television show become a movie like Daredevil, Punisher, Heroes for Hire or something that's just plain gritty and away from the kiddie Disney/Marvel Studios universe.

The whole idea of having Coulson return from the dead is retarded...lol His role in the Avengers was pathetic and I had no sympathy for his character at all. I'd rather watch another season of "Heroes" and that how was actually great until the 3rd season.

Coulsin is here just to bring in the ratings.. pretty sad
bbman182 - 6/29/2013, 11:15 PM
Lol bunch of whiners and d-bags on this forum. I can't wait for this show to air and further complement the already growing marvel universe. STFU with your BS negativity and never ending marvel vs DC horse shit. Enjoy these movies and shows while you can because it may not last forever.
Ranger14 - 6/29/2013, 11:16 PM
I'm surprised there are people who have already watched the show to know it's an abomination. I'm also surprised that people actually thought Coulson died in The Avengers. Not once did I buy into that while watching the film.
Mike89 - 6/29/2013, 11:23 PM
@Ranger14 Loki stabbed him through his chest using his scepter. How is he supposed to alive after that? Explain....
Ranger14 - 6/29/2013, 11:29 PM
Mike89@ how many films are we led to believe someone has died when they haven't? We are dealing with Shield and advanced technology and Fury had the medics come get him and referred to him as down, which doesn't necessarily mean dead to me. Add in the fact it is a comic book movie. Characters don't always die when they appear to have died.
Mike89 - 6/29/2013, 11:36 PM
@Ranger14 He got killed off. His death forced the Avengers to work together to stop loki and in a way "Avenge" him and........now hes alive? That makes sense..
rocky - 6/29/2013, 11:40 PM
Of course it makes sense
a least to anyone familiar with comics and the genre
And how about we wait to see them explain it
And it can also add to what makes the Avengers
want to separate themselves from SHIELD in the future
figuresmaniac - 6/30/2013, 12:06 AM
Bring on the Heroes !!!

Just got my Coulson figure, can't wait to display him with the rest.
Ranger14 - 6/30/2013, 12:11 AM
Fury used his apparent death to manipulate the team together, true to the character of Fury.

As just mentioned...Bucky seemed to have died....no wait...he didn't. Bane appeared to die in TDKR, but did he really? Would they kill off Bane even though it was the end of the franchise? Did the Lizard really die in TASM? Perhaps we are led to believe comic book characters die when they really don't. Shouldn't come as no surprise when you are dealing with comic book material.
MightyZeus - 6/30/2013, 12:44 AM
Damn, i was really hyped for the show to introduce super powered beings and have more focus towards them.
NeoBaggins - 6/30/2013, 2:19 AM
Focusing on the humans? That must be his way of saying there's really no superheroes on the show.
NeoBaggins - 6/30/2013, 2:31 AM
Holy shit! I almost forgot Captain Sisko had hair before.
DRMidNite - 6/30/2013, 4:41 AM

Can we first get past the fact that someone Can survive being impaled through the chest? http://www.whatsonxiamen.com/news8515.html
CherryBomb - 6/30/2013, 5:00 AM

Errrrm .. .I don't care about the "humans"
This is Marvel, I want SUPERheroes!
TheRationalNerd - 6/30/2013, 5:13 AM
@AlexTheKaiser

Lol, you actually have sympathy for the show??? HA! Pathetic! LOL!! And you' sure have a fascination of men sucking balls... O_o

@bbman1

"I can't wait for this show to air and further complement the already growing marvel universe."

Lmboooo, how is that even going to happen if all focus is on the humans??? I'll wait...exactly that's what I thought. Honestly I could give a [frick] less about this show, I appreciate your compassion for wanting people to enjoy it however I refuse to settle for crap. You can be brainwashed if you want.
JoeMomma29 - 6/30/2013, 5:23 AM
From the sound of it the only ties this will have to the Marvel Universe is Agent Coulson. Yeah I am sure they will mention Hulk, Thor, IM, and the New York incident to get the fanboys panties wet. But I am sure it will end there, they will make up villains and heroes for the show.

xNightwingx - 6/30/2013, 5:28 AM
I'm looking forward to this no matter how ridiculous the Coulson explanation is. I love his character. Only reason I even watch the p.o.s. Ultimate Spider-Man.
Stubner - 6/30/2013, 5:41 AM
People are only going to watch this to see them adapt Comic book characters, hero's, and villains. If they don't get that like they do on Arrow, there's gonna be a lot of people tuning out. I hope I'm wrong but this show just seems like Wheedon's ego gone crazy and I'm a big fan of Joss's work.
Nigrutin - 6/30/2013, 5:48 AM
I'd want to see some SUPER-humans please..
MexicanSuperman - 6/30/2013, 5:55 AM
I hope this show is good but I'm not holding my breath, the trailer was meh and lame, and I always hated Agent Coulson since I first Ironman and Clark Greg sucks at acting and comedy
MrDonut - 6/30/2013, 6:15 AM
I hope the show is good but bringing Coulson back and it looking akin to No Ordinary Family and Marvel's recent history of being über-kid friendly just makes me think it'll b a piece of cheesy shit
marcel - 6/30/2013, 6:30 AM
On my knees mouth open marvel ready for you to shoot your super powered load of shit in my mouth so I can choke it down and praise how its the greatest
TheSisko - 6/30/2013, 6:50 AM
nothing new...Marvel wants the sow to stand on its own and not be the hero of the week show, I can respect that.
NeoBaggins - 6/30/2013, 7:50 AM
"On my knees mouth open marvel ready for you to shoot your super powered load of shit in my mouth so I can choke it down and praise how its the greatest"-marcel

Way to embody the sentiments of most of the users on this site. Make sure you wear a bib. It might get sloppy.

ahuh
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 6/30/2013, 8:44 AM
Reviving Coulson is just stupid. Don't give me that whole "It is based on a comic book" or "Bucky lives" crap. Bucky lives because he is a character in the comics and has a story arc behind him. Coulson isn't a comic book character and should be treated as a human being. When a blade goes through your chest you die.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 6/30/2013, 8:45 AM
But I guess we'll see how they handle it.
LexHairFight - 6/30/2013, 8:48 AM
I guess I'm in the minority who will wait to see it before passing judgement. It's a shame the rest of you act like spoiled brats.
LexHairFight - 6/30/2013, 8:49 AM
1939 -

We don't know why or how yet, so to call it 'stupid' is, well... stupid.
Battabing - 6/30/2013, 10:36 AM
I'm not sure why they brought back Coulson. The point of his death was to galvanize the Avengers to form, though now that I think about it, why wouldn't they form in the face of the Chitauri invasion?

So Coulson's death was for nothing anyway. Still bringing him back his stupid. Is everyone on SHIELD gonna have a life model decoy?

I haven't seen the show, so I'll until I see it before judging its content (well besides the fact that J. August Richards needs to lose weight).
Right now the show reminds me of Mutant X. Remember that?
Darkhaven - 6/30/2013, 11:46 AM

Either the "Coulson" that got stabbed was an LMD, or the one in the show is an LMD. It's Mother. [frick]ing. SHIELD. I can't believe this has to be explained on a comic book site. The critical thought going on here is phenomenal.

He should have said the show is aiming for "dark and gritty, not something colorful for kids, but totally for, you know adults." People here would trip over themselves rushing to watch it. But then, it could barely be categorized as a "CBM" show, if I understand the usual jargon in these parts.
