Batman: Conundrum: Part 4
The fourth part of Batman: Conundrum is here! An epic confrontation, a tragedy, and a surprise ending are all in store in this installment of Batman: Conundrum!
Batman climbs into Maroni’s room through the window.
Maroni: “Back for more?”
Batman: “What do you mean?”
Maroni: “Your little demon visited me.”
Batman: “What did you tell him?”
Maroni: “Well, you can’t ask him?”
Batman: “You don’t think I tried?”
Maroni: “You’re impatient. He’s at the Sionis meat-packing plant. Happy?”
SIONIS MEAT PACKING PLANT
Robin kicks open the door. His staff is in hand.
Robin: “Where the hell are you!?!”
He grappled to a metal framework on the roof, and looked at the large room. He threw a batarang.
Robin: “Damn it, Maroni lied to me!”
The sound of footsteps enter the room. Zucco comes in, followed by five men carrying guns. He looks worried.
Zucco: “Spread out. Find the Bat. I don’t care how you do it, just find him!”
THE APARTMENT COMPLEX
Eddie limps up the staircase. He walks past apartment 2j.
Harley: “And so, once the boys get these guns, we can start the party!”
Eddie: “What the hell?”
He kept going, coming to the top floor. He opened the door to 6a.
Eddie: “Good thing I kept this place. Heh.”
Batman races through the streets in the Batmobile.
SIONIS MEAT PACKING PLANT
Robin looks at the goons in the room. One is right below him.
He drops down, and hits the goon with his staff. The goon drops to the floor, and Robin jabs his neck. He throws a batarang that hits a goon, and he clutches his face. He grapples to another vantage point, and immediately glides into a goon, and jabs his neck. The three remaining had found the first, and gathered around him. Robin crouched, and went over to them. He planted a device on ones back, and detonated it. It exploded, sending them all down. He jabbed each of their necks, and smiled.
Amanda Nelson is waiting outside the building. A limo pulls up.
Amanda: “A limo?”
“Only the best.”
The Batmobile pulls up to the plant.
THE GCPD BUILDING
Gordon is looking through files, when Harvey Bullok comes up behind him.
Bullok: “Hey, Commissioner, I’m really sorry for, you know, arresting you.”
Gordon: “You’ve been telling me the past six months. I get it.”
Bullok: “Well, I’ll go check out Joker.”
Gordon: “Fine. If you think you have to for me to forgive you, then fine.”
Bullok: “Oh, thank you. I won’t disappoint.”
Gordon: “Don’t be a suck-up. Okay, we have word that he was going to the apartment building down by the courthouse. Check it out.”
THE SIONIS MEAT PACKING PLANT
Robin scans the room. He sees Zucco. He’s hiding in a closed room on the other side of the room.
Robin runs towards him. He pulls out a batarang, and throws it at the criminal. It breaks through a window, and hits him in the head. Robin glides to the platform, jumps through the window, and grabs Zucco. He picks him up, and pins him to the wall.
Robin: “Remember me Zucco?”
Zucco: “Oh god. Oh, crap. Please don’t hurt me.”
Robin: “Pathetic. Your asking me not to hurt you, let alone not kill you?”
Zucco: “But you guys don’t kill.”
Robin: “The Bat doesn’t kill. I, on the other hand, have different approaches in certain situations. Like this one.”
Zucco: I’m sorry. I...what did I do to you?”
Robin: “You killed them. You killed exactly six people. Well, as far as I know. Two of them were my parents.”
He pulls out a batarang.
Robin: “Now, I know they wouldn’t want me to, but right now, I really want to. I mean, why wouldn’t I? Tell me why I wouldn’t kill you right now!”
Batman: “Because your the good guy.”
Robin: “Why are you here?”
Batman: “I’m not the only one who talked to Maroni. I just took a different approach.”
Robin: “Leave me alone.”
Batman: “Then I’ll take Zucco.”
Batman: “Why what?”
Robin: “You know what.”
Zucco: “Um...I’ll go with the Bat.”
Robin: “Shut up!”
Batman: “You were going to kill him.”
Robin: “You were going to murder Chill!”
Batman: “But I didn’t.”
Robin: “Oh, right, because he was already dead!”
Batman: “That doesn’t matter.”
Robin: “Oh, on the contrary. It makes all the difference. What if he was alive? Huh? Would your heroic morales have come into play at the last second and made you realize, that no, Chill doesn’t deserve to die, and after a vicious beating, you would go back to your cave, never tell anyone, and then live your life of doom and gloom!”
Batman: “Go. I’m going to take Zucco in.”
Robin: “And if I refuse?”
Robin takes out a batarang, punches Batman, and shoves the titanium into Zucco’s neck. He pulls it out, and puts it in Zucco’s neck again.
Batman: “What did you just do?”
Robin: “Something I’ve been wanting to do for months now.”
Batman: “What the hell did you just do?”
Robin: “What else was I going to do? See the man that killed my parents be taken to a prison? This man killed six people! You never should have gone after Chill, only Thorne! I saw the bigger picture. Sure, Chill shot the gun, but Thorne paid him to do it!”
Batman: “You still killed him.”
Robin is crying.
Batman: “You killed him dammit!”
Robin: “You would have done it. You would have killed Chill. You would have murdered him, but apparently, someone else got him first!”
Batman: “But you still-”
Robin: “Did what you would have done? Yeah, I did.”
Batman looks at Robin, and leaves the room. He walks out of the plant, and gets in the Batmobille.
THE APARTMENT COMPLEX
Bullok knocks on the door of apartment 2j.
He knocks again.
He goes down to the lobby.
Bullok: “Is the person living in Apartment 2j out?”
Doorman: “No, she isn’t. I didn’t see her leave, and I’ve been here all day.”
He runs back up the stairs, and busts down the door to 2j.
Harley is tied to a chair, with duct tape covering her mouth. Joker holds a gun to her head.
Bullok: “Let her go clown!”
He pulls out a gun. Joker just smiles.
Bullok: “Put down the gun!”
Joker just smiles.
Bullok shoots Joker’s hand, runs towards him, and punches him. White makeup comes off on Bullok’s hand.
Bullok: “What the hell? You aren’t the clown!”
Thug: “Okay! Okay, please, don’t hurt me!”
Bulok: “Do you know what you just did?”
Thug: “Let me go, please!”
He throws the goon to the other side of the room, and runs to Harley. He takes off the duct tape, and sees her smile. He turns around, and looks down the barrel of a gun.
Joker: “Toodleoo Harv!”
Eddie lays on his bed. He looks up at the ceiling, and then puts his left hand to his eyes. He hears a gunshot, and a woman scream, ‘Yipee!’.
Eddie: “Oh great. There’s a murderer in the building.”
Batman sits at the Batcomputer, and looks at the ground.
Dick lays on his bed, and stuffs his face into a pillow.
THE GCPD BUILDING
Gordon has a walkie talkie.
Gordon: “Harvey? Harvey? Are you there? Answer me! Harvey!”
He gets a response.
Joker: “I’m sorry to have to break it to ya Commish, but Mr. Bullok isn’t available right now. I can’t necessarily tell you why, but-ah, what the hell. I killed him. Ha ha ha ha ha!”
Gordon: “You bastard. I want everyone to get down to the apartment building by the courthouse! We’ve found Joker, and I’m not going to let him get away! Move!”
Bruce walks into a kitchen. Alfred is there.
Alfred: “What happened?”
Bruce: “Dick killed Zucco. This is what happened with Selina. She killed someone, then left. What if Dick, I don’t know, takes off in the middle of the night?”
Alfred: “Does he have much of a choice. You could easily trace him. He won’t get on a plane very quickly. Go talk to him.”
Bruce: “Just like that?”
Alfred: “You sound quite scared, Master Bruce, for a man that has been swallowed by a giant living glob of clay.”
Bruce: “Okay. I’ll talk to him. Thanks Alfred.”
Alfred: “It was nothing.”
Bruce walks into Dick’s room.
Bruce: “That isn’t going to happen.”
Dick: “I have a batarang.”
Bruce: “Great. Look, I’m sorry.”
Dick: “I’m not. Bye.”
Bruce: “Look, Dick...you were right. I would have killed Chill.”
Dick: “I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to kill Zucco, but I had to. He was right there.”
Bruce: “I get it. Just don’t...do that again.
THE APARTMENT COMPLEX
Gordon runs up the stairs, and meets two officers outside 2j. Bullok is between them. Dead.
Officer: “We found Harvey here. Never should have come. We think Joker’s in there.”
Gordon: “Okay. Open the door, I’ll cover you. Ready? One, two...”
The officer opened the door.
The officers fired into the room. Gordon held his fire. Joker walked out of the apartment, hands out, a smile on his face. An officer put handcuffs on him.
Gordon: “You two go, I’ll stay here, search the room.
Harley pulls out a gun in the apartment’s hallway as Gordon walks in alone.
Eddie hears a gunshot.
Gordon is on the floor, clutching his stomach. He lifts his bloody hand. Harley smiles, and kicks Gordon in the head.
Harley: “Stupid old man. Ha!”
She shoots him again.
One of the cops rush into the room. Harley is long gone.
Officer: “Gordon! Gordon! Dammit, what happened?”
Another cop runs into the room.
Officer: “He’s been shot. He’s still alive. I’m going to stay here. You have to get him to a hospital, now!”
The other one lifts Gordon’s body off the ground.
A police car zooms past a man in a purple sweat jacket, with the hood pulled up.
The two officers walk to Gordon’s house, and ring the doorbell. His wife opens the door.
The Next Day
Bruce sees the news on the Batcomputer.
‘Police Commissioner Shot. Comatose in Hospital.’
Bruce: “Oh god.”
THE APARTMENT COMPLEX
Eddie puts on a suit, and hides a gun in it. He walks out of his apartment.
