I’m a copycat. Sorry Khan. I just couldn’t resist. Martian Manhunter is just so interesting, and incredibly deserving of a movie. Without further ado, I present to you, the Top Ten Things Needed for DC's Cinematic Martian Manhunter.

#1
Set the movie on Mars

Set the film in space. This was a mistake the Green Lantern movie made, but it cannot be made for Martian Manhunter. Granted, the movie could easily work on Earth, with flashbacks, but I digress. I, personally would like to see the Martian Manhunter film set on Mars, with huge conflicts. I’ll get to those later.

#2
Make him the Captain America of the League

I don’t mean ‘put John in Cap’s role’. No, I mean: Make John lost and confused in his place, and the one who has lost everything he’s ever known. Also, we have to see this transition. When the Avengers starts, Cap has been around our world for about a year. We don’t see him get used to this world, how it works, or anything. If Manhunter is in a Justice League movie, make him the Captain America. But above all else, show his getting used to our world.

#3
White Martians vs. Green Martians

The White Martians were part of a civil war on Mars, but did not ‘destroy’ the planet. I think that they would be a great part of a war on Mars that does ‘destroy’ the planet, even if it didn’t happen in the comics. They are savages, and it wouldn’t be much of a stretch or too big a change. Only hardcore fans would notice anything.

#4
Give a valid reason as to why humans can’t find Martian civilization

This is a must. Whoever makes this movie cannot ignore the fact that we have sent rovers and satellites to and near Mars. How did we not find the Martians? Did we? Has the government been keeping it from us? Could Amanda Waller or Agent Faraday be responsible? Is there an advanced cloaking technology? Even if it’s one line of dialogue, someone needs to address why humans haven’t found the Martians. That is all.

#5
Bring in all-out war

I want blood. I want war. A Martian Manhunter movie needs this. It needs to have violence, tension, destruction, and death. That is, if it’s set on Mars. We need a war movie. We need Saving Private Ryan. We need to see family’s being butchered and slaughtered. This will add to Manhunter’s character. Have him be helpless to mass murder. Show him see these people dying, or even having to kill some.

#6
Show his family, friends, and relationships

Before the war, or even during the war, show Manhunter’s relationships. He has a mother, a father, a brother, a wife, and a daughter. Show him with these people. Let him be a normal human being, with feelings and emotions. Or... a normal Martian. Whatever. But we need these relationships developed so we can see his pain when they all die. Develop his character with their deaths by developing his relationships with them. The audience will feel pain, along with Manhunter.

#7
Ma’alefa’ak

Manhunter’s sadistic brother. He was the driving force for the Green Martians destruction in the comics. Make him the main villain. I know it’s cheap and cliche to have the family member be a traitor, but have him be a traitor. It develops Manhunter and Ma’alefa’ak. Give him a reason (not money), and show Manhunter’s pain. Also, if you’re going to go the alien invasion route for Justice League, bring back Ma’alefa’ak.

#8
Shape-shifting

This is one of Manhunter’s defining powers. All Martians have this power. How cool would it be to see Manhunter go from a humanoid to an Alien-esque creature? Pretty awesome, right? Battles using these forms would be cool, and major CGI would be needed. I’m thinking Avatar, Avengers, and Lord of the Rings type.

#9
Show that Manhunter has lost everything

This comes for a Justice League movie, and the climax of Manhunter’s own movie. Show him angry. Show him sad. Show him desperate. Let us see it in his dialogue. Have it be as if he’s doing everything to keep from going insane. It has to be emotional. If the writers of Manhunter’s movie screw this key point up, the whole character is destroyed.

#10
A Chance for Revenge

As I said before, if they’re going the alien invasion route for Justice League, include Ma’alefa’ak. And have him square off one on one with Martian Manhunter. it has to be epic, it has to be emotional, and it has to end with him at Manhunter’s feet. Show what Manhunter is going through. Let us see and hear that he wants revenge and blood. Then have him walk away. Without a word. Let the scene speak for itself. And for the love of god don’t play any sappy, emotional music. No music. Silence. And that would be sheer beauty.

That’s it. Thanks for reading. If you didn’t read, post that gif. I’d love to know you didn’t read.

Also, here’s a poll:

WHAT SHOULD THE MARTIAN MANHUNTER MOVIE'S TITLE BE?

Great ideas!

I'd like to see a Green Lantern reference. Just a martian screaming "Where are the Green Lanterns?" in the middle of an attack. Also a Darkseid reference, though I'm not sure how it would go.

I'm not sure about the last one. J'onn is not about revenge.

These are awesome ideas! Reading this has got me thinking as well.

Great article.

This guy understands.
Now perhaps the Martians do not need oxygen to breathe, because they are not mammals, nor do they have or need lungs. A race of shapeshifters - they're going to adapt.

so make him the character he is in the comics and justice league cartoon. gotcha. thats pretty much all you said.

I would prefer if J'onn would be in the end, insted of revenge more like; war is not the answer. I would also put there at least an nod or an easter egg about Ms.Martian(infant daughter of Ma’alefa’ak perhaps). Good article, would be an interesting movie.

I like this! Although Id rather save White Martians for a Justice League film to bring the team together and introduce Martian Manhunter, that way he can be fleshed out throughout the movie, but still incorporate a lot of your points. I don't think the revenge point is right for him, but I'm open for some change and glimpses to walking the fine line between light and darkness, good and evil, etc...

I still think Martian Manhunter should be introduced in the Justice League movie.
Martians could have used their telepathic abilities to block humans' view of Martian civilization. Even robots and satellites were blocked.
I also think Mars shouldn't be far more advanced. I think Natural Selection should have just ruled in their favor. The ability to speak to one anther using only their brains should help them alot. Just like how heat vision gave them a good way to make fire, flight helped them find food, enhanced strength allowed them to capture prey, and shape shifting is a more advanced form of camouflage to hide from dangerous predators.
That would be pretty cool.

@For the attention MAC and Tainted if you read.

Great article. Thumbs up from me. Me MartionAbomb and Tainted have a little Martian civil war of our own going on. These guys seriously are fricking geniuses. Their ideas are pretty damn good, but I have my own story I started scripting a while back, but its been great to see some Manhunter fans with so much passion for the loneliest DC character of all.

never going to happen but i think if they marketed it like prometheous it might do well but wb will never make a non batman superman movie ever its just not going to happen

Never going to happen?
Consider all the dumb blockbusters that have no following, every year. Martian Manhunter deserves the benefit of the doubt.

@MAC
I appreciate that but I'm really just a beta reader. I just broke my ankle in a motorcycle crash, so I'm restricted to my mobile till a cast can be put on. Another delay in my work.

i think that this is a great idea for a martian manhunter film, white vs green martians war, but i think that the movie should end with brainiac appearing and destroying the civilization, taking jonn captive in his mother ship, seguewaying into a justice league movie where jonn is discovered by members of the league and can flesh out some of brainiacs story for superman et all

Well there's going to be something shared between Superman and Martian Manhunter no matter what. Before the trailers even came out, I had a vision of the opening of an MM movie leading with a General Zod-esque trial/sentencing with Ma'alefa'ak, a scene in the comics that was obviouslyinfluenced by the Richard Donner film.

My treatment has an explanation for the green and white conflict, one I summarize with a blood cell analogy.
White blood cells protect the body from harmful bacteria.
Red blood cells provide sustenence for the body.

The body is Mars. Now if the martians aren't around to roleplay as say, trees would to Earth, Mars as a planet suffers. If Mars suffers, then its inhabitants can't recieve the right nutrients and will break down, gradually.

Majority white wants to colonize other worlds, even consider terraforming ti create a livable environment. Green council think this is both suicide and heresy, and forbids space exploration. All life is vital to Mars, and their bidies are only vulnerable to fire, so the whites aren't exactly confronted with bloodshed. They are spitefully exiled.

Without Mars, they slowly lose their powers. They become complacent, relying on tech to replicate their essentials, and their minds can only pick up thoughts with a strained effort. They try cloning themselves, thinking a larger population would restore their damaged bodies with a larger output of "emissions". It doesn't work, and the clones are treated as slaves.

Generations later, the whites return to Mars to depose the council, with the expected help of an unexpectantly mind-wiped Ma'alefa'ak, who doesn't remember his role in the coup.

The trick is to NOT start it off in chronological order.

I wonder if you Martian Manhunter fanboys can name villains out side of Ma'alefa'ak?

Does Commander Blanx ring any bells? How about Mr. V?

How many people know anythingt about him besides what is presented to them in the animated series?

Just a question I wanted to ask.
Tainted87
Tainted87 - 7/5/2013, 8:36 PM
Blanx is OLD SCHOOL, and was DCs attempt at creating a General Zod type of villain for J'onn. It was campy, but he was the original genocidal maniac before the retcon.

He's the leader of the White martian coup in my story.
Drazz also makes an appearance, however small.

MM comics are damn hard to find these days. You can't fault people for reading Wiki and watching cartoons. I only know what I know through torrents, and those are rare enough.
Anyway, Ma'alefa'ak is the most personal villain J'onn has ever faced. In an origin story, his presence is essential.

YI'm happy to see people who know a lot about MM. Makes me happy.

@MartianAbominationClone I don't think Malefic was ever even alluded to...
