New Captain America Movie Pays Homage to Pulp Fiction

New Captain America Movie Pays Homage to Pulp Fiction New Captain America Movie Pays Homage to Pulp Fiction

Check out the Pulp Fiction Homage at the end of the new Captain America film. Can Nick Fury truly walk the path of the righteous man?

At the end of the new Captain America: Winter Soldier film (yes, there be
SPOILERS lurking here laddy...) we see a  subtle, yet obvious homage to the Samuel L. Jackson character in the iconic Quentin Tarantino movie Pulp Fiction.  As we all know, Jackson plays the eye-patch wearing, leather-jacket robed, gun-toting and  ruthless director of SHIELD, Nick Fury.  In Pulp Fiction, Jackson plays the afro-wearing, black-suited, gun-toting biblical quoting ruthless murder machine called Jules Winnfield.

SPOILERS BELOW--I THINK THEY WERE PLANTED BY HYDRA.  LOOK OUT...

As anyone who saw Pulp Fiction , which hit theaters in the mid-1990s, will remember, one of Samuel L. Jackson's signature pieces was a bit of pseudo-biblical verse he recites as he points a gun at people.  To quote Samuel "Jules" Jackson from the film:

“The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know My name is the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon thee.”

Jackson's character states that this verse is from Ezekiel 25:17.  While biblical scholars point out that this is not the true text from the Bible, it is associated strongly with Jules.

Fast-forward to 2014, and at the end of the new Captain America film, we see a tombstone, in a cemetery, for Colonel Nicholas J. Fury. And right under the late Colonel's name, we see a quote from Ezekiel 25:17, stating "The path of the righteous man..."  Since it was already ascertained that this is not a true Bible quote, the only reason it is in this movie is a direct homage and link honoring Samuel L. Jackson's Pulp Fiction character.  Well played, Marvel.  And to a comics and film geek, totally cool!

The Russo's said many Easter Eggs were planted in this film and that was definitely one. Robert Redford has one too, not sure what it was though.

I was skeptical that this was just another opinionated theory, but it is actually solid, and a very curious homage at that.

One of his character (don't know which one) said something like "if you have to choose between you or someone else, send flowers" and when Fury arrives he ask him is he recevied his flowers.

As much as I loved the Marvin Gaye touch I just automatically had a flashback from Four Brothers when it started playing. That scene NEVER gets old! lol

Then again T.I. did his thing with it too...

I caught this way back when it was released in the UK, but couldn't say shit 'bout no gravestone, because it was too spoilerific. Although a bunch of us Brits were getting spoilery on the Scoops article that supposedly had "Spoilers" itself in order to debunk it's claims, so I did end up revealing this homage ahead of time, after all.
I really like how you can't see the specific year of his birth, either. I mean, obviously they've done the whole comics thing of not showing the year of his supposed death, but not having his birth means that he could've been a contemporary of Cap's, like he was in the comics (and even in the Ultimate comics, in which he too was a super soldier of sorts).
And there was that scene in which he was chilling out to some old skool vinyl (whilst bleeding to death, admittedly), in Roger's crib. Lots of hints that MCU Fury is indeed as old as Ultimate Fury and Fury 616 (which is also a prison in Alien 3, but that's besides the point).

Maybe Pulp Fiction is in the Marvel Movie Continuity. After Pulp Fiction Jules just roamed the Earth like he said. After various adventures he became involved in the intelligence community and changed his name to Nicholas J. (as in Jules) Fury.
