REVIEW: GODZILLA

My anticipation for Gareth Edwards' take on the big fella was at an all time high, so does it deliver or did it end up like the 1998 travesty? Hit the jump and check out my review of Godzilla to find out!

With the epic trailers and TV spots giving us a tease at the King of Monsters, I found myself intrigued. And ultimately prepared to see this film unfold, which starts off introducing strong characters in Joe Brody, Ford and Elle portrayed by Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. Thankfully the human element works very well, incorporating dramatic tension having a good balance. Although it may drag on quite a bit, I had no problem with it.

Maintaining that balance throughout, had me interested with the story. Joe being obsessed about figuring out what's causing these so called disturbances among them. Of course the main thing is to keep tight and wait to see the monster of the hour right? When he does show up, it's truly breathtaking. The 350ft behemoth roars and stomps his way through to stop the winged MUTO.

And my goodness does the action not disappoint, I was literally on the edge of my seat. Alexandre Desplat's score is basically a homage to the original 1954 film. Which is chilling, yet satisfying enough to keep me in the film. Hearing the little rumblings once Godzilla is a foot, gets me excited, despite the fact that he's not involved a whole bunch, I still enjoyed it.

Overall Godzilla is a pulse pounding rollercoaster ride once the action sets in, and truly a well crafted film from Gareth Edwards. Only thing to do now is to watch it again, this time in IMAX 3D!!

RATING: 4.5/5

I liked it a lot, but I thought some of the choices were a little disappointing. Movie of the year is a little generous though.

Just got back from seeing it and got to say I was disappointed. Yeah the action is good, when it happens, but I just found it fairly dull for long stretches - my wife feel asleep lol.

Godzilla was cool, but the narrative throughout was lacking somewhat and I can't put my finger on exactly what it was missing. I'm not trying to be a downer on this, as I was really looking forward to seeing it, it just didn't hit the mark for me.

I'd say 2.5 out of 5 if I'm being generous.

I saw it on opening night and I [frick]ing loved it. It was one of my 3 most anticipated movies of the year, along with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of The Galaxy, and I can say that it earned that spot. More than that, Godzilla has been my #1 favorite character and franchise ever since I discovered it when I was a four year old kid, so needless to say, this movie meant a lot to me, especially after that 1998 abomination. So is the new movie perfect? No, so as in anything if you go into it with unrealisticly high expectations, you're going to be a little disappointed. But I'll say this... Gareth Edwards did Godzilla justice, and Julius [frick]in' Jimminy was that an awesome flick. Godzilla is [frick]ing glorious in his new movie.

I loved the film. Saw it in IMAX in 3D. I thought it was great and amazing.
cyked - 5/16/2014, 7:29 PM
ummm.... yeah. It was okay. I guess.

Brian Cranston had the most emotional depth.... but what was Ken Watanabe supposed to be in this pic? The "monster whisperer"? He just MAGICALLY knew the motivations of these critters at every turn?

Naw. Pacific Rim had more monster for your buck. This is a Godzilla flick, not an attempt-to-put-emotional-depth-into-everything flick. Cranston was the only human I gave a fig about in the movie, and...... well..... spoilers.

Very good movie! Pure Godzilla awesomeness!!! Unlike the X-Men movies which are pretending to be something they're not!

I'm looking forward to a sequel!!!

:-P

@ cyked

This was a throwback to the original 1954 film...which did have a lot of character depth in with the film. Main difference between this and 1954 (other than modernization)...was the extra beasties.

We were pleasantly pleased with the film. Although we never saw the original like our father did in theaters...it brought back the youthful feelings we had when he bought it on VHS and we watched it together. The action was good...the character depth was awesome...and bringing in Ken Watanabe as Dr. Serizawa was perfect. Not to mention the Atomic Breathe.

We give it a 5/5!

WE HAVE SPOKEN!
