EDITORIAL: MARVEL And DC, Why Not Enjoy Both?

In this discussion, I'm going to give two specific reasons as to why it's completely fine to both enjoy Marvel and DC equally. Along with reading through the lines as to why picking sides isn't needed. Hit the jump and check it out..

They Both Have A Great Library Of Characters

This is basic information obviously, but there always tends to be a debate as to who the better hero is. Whether it's Batman or Captain America, Spidey or Robin the list goes on. A great example is to how a majority of people despise Superman because he's "overpowered", being illogical and not giving specifics as to why that seems to be an issue. The point is, both sides have very similar characters, down to powers, personality etc., and I don't think there's that much of a medium between the two. Since I haven't read every comic book under the sun, I may be wrong, I'm just going by the valid knowledge I have stored as a reader over the years.

Both Profitable In Media

Superheroes on film have been a huge sucess on the big screen, and have made an impact on moviegoers and fans alike. Unfortunately this is where things seem to spiral out of control. Obviously both Marvel/Disney and Warner Brothers have had their share of great films that shattered the box office, from Marvel's The Avengers, Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier to The Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steel. Not to mention a couple of duds like Green Lantern, Batman & Robin and X-Men Origins Wolverine to name a few. Every time I stumble upon a forum or blog, there's a huge argument as to which movie franchise reigns surpreme, and if you strongly disagree you'll either be verbally insulted, or threatened to the point where you are not allowed to express your own opinion, which is inconceivable to me.

The Marvel vs. DC Debate Shall Be Put To Rest

All in all, it's become tedious and plain discouraging to see fellow fans bicker at one another, simply because they prefer one brand over the other. I mean, does it really matter? Can't we all just take a deep breath, and fully appreciate the fact that these characters exist? I for one enjoy both companies respectively, although I don't agree with all their creative decisions, I never was the one to choose sides, and I don't see the point of doing so.

Always said that a DC v. Marvel war is stupid and it's even dumber to have a Marvel-within-Marvel war by hating Fox and Sony.
NateBest - 7/22/2014, 9:48 PM
I agree! I have TONS of comics and DVDs from both camps, and love all of them (or most). Competition is healthy, let's cheer them all on!
ibravosp5 - 7/22/2014, 9:50 PM
Lol I actually like both....,I think marvel slightly more but both are really good..
AlexanderLykins - 7/22/2014, 9:51 PM
Marvel vs. DC will never go away. It's the greatest rivalry in comics.
TheBrownHornet - 7/22/2014, 9:53 PM
Agreed! I enjoy both.
GiantNerd - 7/22/2014, 9:54 PM
I love comic heroes/villains and the great mythology that comes with them. I like Marvel characters slightly better but you put a superhero in a movie and I'll be watching it regardless of what company's name is in front of it.
Ranger14 - 7/22/2014, 9:56 PM
I don't prefer one camp over the other. I do prefer certain characters and what has and hasn't been done with them. It has nothing to do with DC or Marvel. I have been a DC character fan much longer than I have been a Marvel fan, so I am going to hold DC films to a higher standard because I like the characters more. It has to do with the writers and studios who are not delivering what I would like to see...which is simply a matter of my own opinion and perspective. It's the trolling and making back-handed comments about other studios and personally attacking people if they don't like a film that you like that gets stupid and annoying.

Most people think I am more of a Marvel fan. I have preferred the Marvel films more to date, but I prefer DC comic characters.
Dandy - 7/22/2014, 9:56 PM
I'm a film fan first and foremost. I will never cry to get to see a good movie, Marvel or DC. But honestly, embrace the rivalry!!!!! Sometimes its just so much fun to hate on Macy's or Gimbals.

There is a reason why sports ENCOURAGE it.

Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson seem to be the only ones who get it.

Let the war rage on!
TheRationalNerd - 7/22/2014, 9:56 PM
Come 2017 both families will be at peace for the Justice League is coming...
ALmazing - 7/22/2014, 9:57 PM
GiantNerd - 7/22/2014, 9:58 PM
I do think it's interesting when people actually debate what's done better in certain movies or comics though. It keeps it fun and entertaining, especially around here. Some people are so insecure and one dimensional though it truly is sad to witness sometimes.
Sykamore - 7/22/2014, 9:58 PM
who doesn't enjoy both?
MrChuff - 7/22/2014, 9:58 PM
Didn't read the article as I already do enjoy both. Never understood the bitching from fans of either camp.
tonytony - 7/22/2014, 9:58 PM
agreed. I watch all comic book movies regardles
Jollem - 7/22/2014, 9:59 PM
shhh!! the bickering--while annoying sometimes--keeps the gods alive
AlexanderLykins - 7/22/2014, 10:00 PM
Nope. You have to like both. If you don't, you won't get a free phone. People just need to lighten up a bit.
CaptShipwreck - 7/22/2014, 10:00 PM
Trolls gotta eat like ^^
Holmes - 7/22/2014, 10:02 PM
i like both the same.
MarkV - 7/22/2014, 10:02 PM
OK so I hit the "like" button, but I have to admit the premise of the article is flawed. Most people want to see themselves as the good guy and won't admit to any kind of bias and people are generally very unaware of their own bias. Many "Marvalites" and "DC Fanboys" would strongly reject the idea that they represent some kind of team that always fights for their own side. I am kind of on the Warner DC side, but I have to admit that Marvel is really light years beyond Warner.
AlexanderLykins - 7/22/2014, 10:03 PM
Are you done?
Dandy - 7/22/2014, 10:03 PM
"We won't mention Howard the Duck, and we won't mention steel, and we'll fight until we bleed for superiority!"

When studios compete....we win.....hopefully.
MightyZeus - 7/22/2014, 10:05 PM
I enjoy Marvel and DC, because i love variety.

If there's no variety in your life, then your not having fun.
Humperdink - 7/22/2014, 10:06 PM
AlexanderLykins - 7/22/2014, 10:06 PM
While that could be true, it's an opinion.
ibravosp5 - 7/22/2014, 10:06 PM
Looks like everyone agrees that both are good... We are one big happy family... The rivalry comes in on which actors costumes and personality is good or not... "He's a terrible choice for this well known hero or villan!" "He's a great choice for this hero or villan!"
ibravosp5 - 7/22/2014, 10:07 PM
Oh yeah and she... He/she is a good/bad choice
ELxDIABL1TO - 7/22/2014, 10:08 PM
I love both and am very fortunate to be living in a time where CBM's are are in abundance. We're truly are living in the Golden Age of Comic Book Movies and should appreciate it while it's here, one day this all might be gone.
Nomis - 7/22/2014, 10:08 PM
When I was a kid and went to the 7-Eleven to pick up some comics, I didn't care who the publisher was, I just got the books with the characters that caught my eye and had the best art.

Nothing have changed now that I'm an adult.
AlexanderLykins - 7/22/2014, 10:09 PM
Nature isn't even trying to hid its bias.
AlexanderLykins - 7/22/2014, 10:11 PM
That is beautiful man. I'd say I'm very much that way too.
Dandy - 7/22/2014, 10:11 PM
Screw both Marvel and DC, they are both dogpoop.

We all know there is only one true superhero......one might even say the greatest hero.

Holmes - 7/22/2014, 10:13 PM
doesnt matter the publisher, wat matters is the characters, id rather get something Batman than FF but id rather go with Wolverine over green lantern its all about who u like
BlackBolt72 - 7/22/2014, 10:13 PM
DC and Marvel do have one thing in common and that is the hate of traditional Hollywood purists who would love to see them both fail. They are eating too much BO money up preventing movies like Moms Night Out from showing profit and allowing more films of that type from being made. The two truly are breaking ground for the future heart of Hollywood. Cbm lovers need to support both or the purists will try and run them off the big screens.
AlexanderLykins - 7/22/2014, 10:14 PM
Look at this thread. A thing of beauty.

Nature knows better than to side against the Bat.
MightyZeus - 7/22/2014, 10:24 PM
I thumbed this up too and tweeted it.
dethpillow - 7/22/2014, 10:25 PM
who cares? why not? why? same question.

people shouldn't be telling themselves, well i gotta like em both, so what am i gonna do?

there's nothing wrong with disliking anything.

i just like instantly latched on to Spider-Man when i was first exposed to comic books. DC had less to do with Spider-Man then Marvel books did.

it was as simple as that. that's why I love Marvel. no reason to hate DC becuz of that, but why should i care about them? if it wasn't for Spider-Man, i wouldn't care about any comic books, i bet. it's not like that now, I can appreciate them for what they are, regardless of Spider-Man, but who's got the time to read everything? DC will always be there when I'm lying on my deathbed, maybe i'll check out Teen Titans then, that seems like a great title.

and nothing is weird or negative about anything I just said.

in an article like this, I think it would really help to point out all the creators that have bounced back and forth between the two over their careers and how plenty of people work for both at the same time. that's the best argument i think, really. that could make people realize it's not like there's this fundamental difference between the two.

and also point out how different little publishers were often eaten up by bigger publishers who just assumed all their properties. so these lines are always moving. less and less so now, but everything could've been anything back then.
mgeoff88 - 7/22/2014, 10:26 PM
Great article! I love both DC and Marvel. I feel sorry for people that waste their time going into articles trying to start flame wars.

Both DC and Marvel both have something to offer. People miss out by sticking with one company just to spite the other. It's really stupid when you think about it.

And how could you even call yourself a true comic book fan, if you want a CBM from another company to fail?
