Writer Dean Devlin Reflects on his GODZILLA Script

Back in June, Bloody Disgusting had a chat with writer Dean Devlin on his Godzilla script back from the 98 abomination, I mean film..

The 1998 GODZILLA film is known to Godzilla fans as the worst thing with the 'Godzilla' title. The monster known by fans as G.I.N.O (officially 'Zilla' by TOHO) was a rather weak interpretation of the Japanese beast. Below is an excerpt from a small chat Bloody Disgusting had with Devlin back in June, hit the link at the bottom for the full thing.

"Listen, I think there's a lot of wonderful stuff in that movie, I really do," he said in defense of the film. "[But] I think the problem with that movie was the script I wrote. I think Roland did an amazing job directing it, I think the actors are great, I think when people look back now on the Blu-ray and see the visual effects, it's a lot better than what people said at the time. The problem was the script! I made some big errors in that script. I wish I hadn't, I wish I had a chance to fix it. But in another way, it's allowed me to be a better writer since, because I made the mistakes on one, and I realized I'm never gonna make those mistakes again!"

I'm glad to see him admitting the mistakes. Of course, it has been thirteen years since the film's release, so it's easier to admit them. Now, let's see if America can do it right, just need a trailer announcement....

Thanks to Nailbiter for notifying me of this.

Yeah I remember waiting in line to see this flick, ended up pooping and missed out on the first half of the movie and decided to go home. Glad I pooped.
suzuranMan77 - 12/23/2011, 12:03 AM
that movie is crap!!
Maia87 - 12/23/2011, 12:27 AM
Come on, it wasn't that bad. Godzilla 98 was a fun movie with great special effects.

The old japanese 50/80's Godzilla movies are just terrible.
word1one - 12/23/2011, 12:32 AM
theWorld - where did that CG Godzilla at the end come from. that was actually pretty dope looking.
HavocT - 12/23/2011, 12:43 AM
It wasn't all that bad.
monstalova - 12/23/2011, 12:44 AM
I thot the movie was a bit of fun. Obviously corny as hell but still some decent action/chase scenes. The sound is epic on a full surround system
HKFanatic - 12/23/2011, 12:47 AM
Too to be honest, Emmerich's Godzilla is a bad movie that I have a soft spot for. I grew up with it, was even disappointed by it back then, but I revisited it on blu-ray and had a decent enough time. Although I will say Matthew Broderick was horribly miscast.
JDUKE25 - 12/23/2011, 12:48 AM
I thought that movie was pretty good. It was entertaining.
Batman27 - 12/23/2011, 1:02 AM
I actually didn't hate it that much.

welcome back trudy, good to see your still a prick.
mattattack - 12/23/2011, 1:58 AM
I actually love this film but I feel it has a lot to do with nostalgia hah. It was fun and I love it for what it was.
marvel72 - 12/23/2011, 2:57 AM
this movie was one of the biggest pile of shit i have ever seen.

can't wait for the new one.
NeoBaggins - 12/23/2011, 3:08 AM
Not that bad production-wise for a 98 film. Mathew Brodwick and the rest of the cast are good. But Godzilla has no personality and they kill the ending with an attempt to be like Jurrasic Park with the little baby zillas.
churchgriff - 12/23/2011, 3:30 AM
It wasn't that bad of a summer movie, except fot the baby zillas chase.
drfate - 12/23/2011, 3:58 AM
Devlin in right. I enjoyed Godzilla '98; the direction they took with Godzilla makes much more sense than the original. Back then, they said they wanted a leaner, more agile Godzilla, and they nailed that....but his face was way wrong. The Jay Leno lizard was just wrong; a sleeker muzzle would have been better.

Its hard to reconcile Godzilla having such huge freakin' legs and see him as swift! One second he's here, and then he's there...you never see fat Godzilla actually run anywhere.
Ancar - 12/23/2011, 4:01 AM
I tihnk the movie is a great piece of entertaiment production and he should be proud of it. The excess was that Jurassic Park sequence.
PaulRom - 12/23/2011, 4:27 AM
I recently rewatched it to make sure it was bad or not, and it was definitely a disgrace. Unlikable characters, 20 minutes too long, and Godzilla was portrayed as a bad guy when in the other movies he wasn't.
WesleyGibson - 12/23/2011, 4:51 AM
I loved this one as a kid. Still do.
matmanisbobbin - 12/23/2011, 5:41 AM
This movie's awesome. [frick] the dude in the suit. I'd rather have CG images than watch Tommy from the Power Rangers have a hissy fit.
Ha1frican - 12/23/2011, 5:52 AM
i still love this movie but then again i was 7 when it came out
Ha1frican - 12/23/2011, 5:53 AM
@PaulRom he was evil originally what are you smoking?
Shredder - 12/23/2011, 6:02 AM
Monster movie? It's decent.

Godzilla movie? It's crap.
comicb00kguy - 12/23/2011, 6:06 AM
I hated the '98 film- the only good thing about it was a couple of songs on the soundtrack. I liked the Puff Daddy song and the remake of Heroes.

As for the script of the '98 film? Reminds me of this old Sprite ad- think this was out around that time:

PaulRom - 12/23/2011, 6:19 AM
@Ha1frican I meant that in the 98 film, Godzilla was basically portrayed as an antagonist. The Japanese films portrayed him as the protagonist, not some random monster bent on destroying a city just so he can lay eggs. Also, it was real lame that Godzilla was defeated by the military, but in the other films he could take on other powerful monsters.
MassExecutions - 12/23/2011, 6:21 AM
@PaulRom - Wasn't Godzilla a bad guy in the first several films? You know, until he got really popular, like Venom?

I basically agree with Shredder. As a Godzilla movie I can understand why fan's don't like it. As a movie about some random giant iguana, I think its pretty watchable.
MassExecutions - 12/23/2011, 6:22 AM
@PaulRom - Never mind! You clarified as I was typing.
sparkadv - 12/23/2011, 6:57 AM
Sorry but Emmerich relies only on Special Effects, his movies plots are crap and combined with Devlin's writing, they make the worst duo in history of movie making!
SpideyQuad - 12/23/2011, 7:02 AM
I wanted this movie to succeed so badly I was shattered by how crappy it turned out. Devlin missed the whole point trying to make it grounded in reality. I mean Godzilla dying from a missile? Really Now??? Where was the real threat? In over population of baby Godzilla's?

I'm getting pissed all over again!
SpideyQuad - 12/23/2011, 7:03 AM
Oh yeah, 2012 was worse if you could believe ...
theangrytroll - 12/23/2011, 7:07 AM
It was entertaining. That's all a movie needs to be.
ironpool007 - 12/23/2011, 7:12 AM
I know I definitely will not in the majority on this one, but I loved this movie. Godzilla was awesomely redesigned, and incredibly harass looking. So what if the actual people who acted in it sucked. I was rooting for for the big guy all the way through, and felt bad, when he got killed at the end. Seriously, watching those missiles tear through was tough to watch.
Supes17 - 12/23/2011, 7:22 AM
I actually liked it when it came out. I was a kid, so all I wanted to see was a monster blowing shit up. And that's what I got.
I do remember being irritated at the fact that he didnt have his trademark radiation or fire breath though.

JerseyJoker - 12/23/2011, 7:28 AM
rofl, thats bullshit.

He doesn't believe a word he said. He just kept saying he made a mistake in the scrip...what mistake? Where did his script go wrong? He doesn't say....because he doesn't give a shit.
MovieTheaterLad - 12/23/2011, 7:36 AM
Putting your opinions in a news headline is bad journalism, and shouldn't be allowed.

I bet none of you would be happy if someone made a news headline o the for The Dark Knight Rises, and said that it's crappy in the subtitle.
KNIGHT3000 - 12/23/2011, 7:43 AM
Biggest mistake was making the US Government take Godzilla down.
KNIGHT3000 - 12/23/2011, 7:46 AM
Still that movie was the BEST big G ever looked, movement and all. It only made sense that he was constantly taking a look at all the activity going on at his feet, while running around.I was really pissed at the way he went down.
HellsHammer - 12/23/2011, 7:49 AM
I liked it when I was a kid
HellsHammer - 12/23/2011, 7:53 AM
Destroyer14 - 12/23/2011, 7:53 AM
@MovieTheaterLad What, the abomination part? And this film is from thirteen years ago. TDKR is not even out yet, calling it bad would be strange.
Destroyer14 - 12/23/2011, 7:58 AM
And yes, this story is from June. But it's timeless and there's been zero Godzilla activity lately. It'd be one thing if it was from two years ago, but it's just from a few months back.
KNIGHT3000 - 12/23/2011, 8:01 AM
I want Tacos and Sprite now.
Christuffer - 12/23/2011, 8:04 AM
This is actually one of my favorite movies. I still have the album

PaulRom - 12/23/2011, 8:07 AM
@HellsHammer You beat me to that commercial. :P That thing's classic, even if the actual movie isn't.
KNIGHT3000 - 12/23/2011, 8:13 AM
It was the ending that really upset me. Even more than the Lil Zillas.

I always try to think though, since they f#ckin killed G, that it was like a prequel to the Godzilla we all know to be alive and well out there, just chillin. The lil dude from the end.
SUPERBATSPIDERMAN - 12/23/2011, 8:15 AM
I like the movie. Of course it is not a perfet movie and Godzilla looked look a big dinosaur insteas of a radioactive beast but I like the film. This movie has amazing special effects for it's time.
