EDITORIAL: Why Flame Wars And Hatred Are A Good Thing

Some CBMs are good, some are terrible and occasionally we get truly great ones...but who is better DC or Marvel? And why are the endless arguments a good thing for comicbookmovie.com?

Hello there fellow CBM users!

I have been coming to this site for several years but never joined in on the action until last year. I came for the news mainly and to check out some fan-fic but always shied away from joining and commenting. When I did read the comments, they were always full of hate and arguments which at the time, seemed so petty and pointless to me. As I learnt more about the site and the way it works, it occured to me...these arguments are part of what keeps this place going!

There are a variety of users on this site. Some come to read the news and never comment (like me before!), some post their stories and art, some come to debate and, it has to be said, some seem to like antagonising people with their views. But how can this be a good thing I hear you cry? Well the answer is delightfully simple.

Here at CBM.com we are blessed with several Power Users who bring us the news on a daily basis. If you don't know who these people are then you need to pay more attention. Now, in the past their have been several complaints that these users intentionally start so called 'Flame Wars' and in all honesty, I do think this is sometimes the case. And why would they do this? Well, the reason is money.

The top contributors on this site are paid when you click on their articles, the more clicks they get, the more money they earn. Commerce makes the world go around people; this is just a fact of life. I don't know any Power User personally but I'm pretty sure they all like money as much as they like comics and comic book movies, and it is the financial reward that keeps them doing what they are doing - it's the same reason I work (although admittedly my actual day job is lame) - so the more clicks they get the better for the site and us!

The most commented on articles almost always involve an argument about how this movie sucked, and that one was brilliant. Or how Marvel are owning the movies but DC rule animation. Or how a particular director has mis-represented characters and abused the source material. We've all been there right? You click on an article then come back some time later and there are over 10 pages of comments with people arguing over seemingly the silliest of things.

At first I didn't understand. I am not a natural hater so hearing people bash movies and creators was perplexing to me, and seeing user's back-and-forths just seemed like a waste of time. I still don't understand - I would rather look at the good stuff than the bad - but now I realise it is a good thing. Without this, the site we love wouldn't be as good as it is.

So go forth fellow users, and argue to your heart's content! The site needs you, but in case you take things too personally don't forget this...

And just in case you're wondering I love both companies and don't normally hate...but The Dark Knight Rises sucked ass.

Interesting article there...I like the first picture.

Have you seen any Wilding articles? Just look at those, flame material!
case - 4/28/2014, 6:40 AM
They're only bad if they're boring. Which seems to happen a lot now. I miss Intruder sometimes.

Soto

why do you think Josh's avatar is the teaser image for the article?

whether you like to argue or not, it is a very clever strategy (much like splitting 1 interview into several articles) which relies on the butt-hurt of teenagers to work...and work it does!

but if there were no reward for posting articles then we wouldn't have the team of Power Users we do, and this site would be poorer for it I think.
MrSotoMan - 4/28/2014, 7:03 AM
@Doopie- Was I trying to argue? No argument there, it is effective to get people riled up.

My favorite is The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the Batman & Robin of this generation. THAT is where it is obviously trying to get more hits than anyone on this site. But, it does work honestly. He does piss off a lot of people.

my apologies - only the first line there was aimed at you, not the bits underneath. that was more of an extension of the article.

i agree with you, article headings and teasers are intentionally written like that to get more hits. at first this kind of annoyed me too - it seemed very cynical. but like i put in the article more money for these guys means they will keep bringing us up to date news and info. i have a love/hate relationship with the approach
Odin - 4/28/2014, 7:45 AM
Lol that first pic X)
Doopie - 4/28/2014, 7:51 AM
yoss

you bring up some good points. and you're right - this does fall on us the users. we are the ones who react to the news in certain ways. I think the point is that the editors know this and do encourage it in some ways.

I don't think Josh or any other Power User are necessarily lying, but the way they word things, and the article/news type they focus on are going to lead nerds down a path. add that to the fact that sooooo many users don't actually read quotes and info fully then you've got a full blown war on your hands.

I say let the power users do as they will as they do put lots of work into the site's content. and i really really don't think they give a shit about insults or whatever - if someone is on their article bashing them then the person who writes the article is having the last laugh
ManCalledSting - 4/28/2014, 8:11 AM
It's in how things are wrote, not necessarily what's wrote. It also has to do with how people interpret things, and if they're douchers.
Doopie - 4/28/2014, 8:17 AM
i see what you're saying. it may seem rather sad but i do enjoy going through the hall of shame comments to see what people have been reported for. aside from the racism and other 'isms', there are a lot of personal attacks that happen. some of it is quite nasty too. but as you say this is perhaps more down to the maturity (or lack thereof) of those particular users. but sometimes that is coaxed.
MrSotoMan - 4/28/2014, 8:25 AM
@yossarian- I have said that he does have the right to say whatever in the past and even defending him in articles. It is because of clicks though, notice how calm and collective Rors article is about TASM2 but going over to Wilding he merely rips it apart like a poor mans version of Richard Roeper.

A lie though is different from an over-exaggeration since if the movie has gotten 2 stars, than it shouldn't be as bad as Batman & Robin if that movie was universally panned when it was first released. Obviously there is some thing that he really did like where the entire Batman & Robin movie is bad from the first camera angle of the movie. There is also the Arrow>>>>Agents of Shield comments he likes to put in, so obviously it is to spark of some emotion from people to get pissed off.

I honestly could care less, I click on any article regardless of who writes it or not when it comes to news. To say the least though, Wilding has admitted to making his articles to start a flame war cause he knows how this site reacts to shit like this. It is a smart move to get people to love your article a lot more or to get comments or to get a thumbs up to add some type of interesting debate or to add the usual bullshit of Marvel Studios getting character rights back or WB/DC sucks.

During the time of MOS, I have no idea which reviews I read on this site, what was polarizing to me to a movie I really do love is what the commentators feel about it. I mean shit, I actually agree with Wilding on Pacific Rim, it isn't as good as everybody makes it out to be and I think its one of the first times I have ever seen a director stoop to the level of stupidity that Del Toro has gone down. I mean from Pans Labyrinth to Pacific Rim? WTF

Like Wilding has every right to write his opinion, so do I. Of course he is somebody huge on this site. His articles though are flame-material and are often a good read to see the outcome of everyones response in the comment section.
GliderMan - 4/28/2014, 8:32 AM
Hatred is morally wrong, you idiot.
DrunkenNukem - 4/28/2014, 8:36 AM
For me TASM 2 was nowhere near as bad to call it the "Batman &Robin" of the franchise.

Is something beyond my comprehension
McNyagano - 4/28/2014, 8:38 AM

MrBatmor - 4/28/2014, 8:39 AM
Holy shit @yoss Is talking logically!!! :P

You do make some valid points...

@gliderman so you are saying even if I hated a movie I have to say its good because its morally right!!?? Wtf!!
Doopie - 4/28/2014, 8:41 AM
i think gliderman was having a joke - saying hatred is wrong then ending in hatred.

i hope so at least
cipher - 4/28/2014, 8:41 AM
Good write-up, Doop.

I have no illusions about how things work here, but I don't have a problem with what any of the Power Users say or do. I simply do not give a shit. Some users take upon themselves to make a big stink about people not agreeing with them 100% all the time, and they're just so.. invested in their favourite whatever that it's just not hard for it to escalate until everyone's basically beating each other away with clubs.

I mean, you guys know me by now- I'm not offended if anybody disagrees with my opinions on anything. I don't care if somebody thinks my favourite movie, comic, band, f*cking drink, whatever- is "shit", so long as they don't make it personal. I don't think I need to clarify any "allegiances" or whatever, either, because it's quite obvious by now that I don't give a shit about that sorta thing. I just make it a point to be respectful about other people's opinions, and that's that. I'm not going to throw a bitch-fit because somebody says Hemsworth's balls are bigger than Cavill's, or vice versa, or because somebody says "this thread has waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more pages than that other one, maaaaaaaaaan, 'cuz [company of worship] is WINNING. F*CK. Y'ALL".

I. Don't. Care.

But, unfortunately.. as long as you have users willing to insult each other, their mothers, girlfriends/wives, buried relatives, and pets- there's always going to be another flame war. So, yeah..

Like you said, mate- it's just a fact of life.
MrBatmor - 4/28/2014, 8:42 AM
@soto I think if someone really thinks tasm2 is as bad as b&r he has the right to say that.... Same thing with arrow and aos... Although this is a great area..
LeonardKnows - 4/28/2014, 8:43 AM
@DrunkenPirateNukem I know right?!
cipher - 4/28/2014, 8:44 AM
Pasties, you've got more lives than a f*cking cat. Good to see ya.
Doopie - 4/28/2014, 8:44 AM
cipher

if all users, nay all people, were like you the world would be a much happier place. much drunker, but also happier :)

i fear the kind of user we're talking about might not bother to read an article like this tho.

thanks to everyone who took the time.
MrBatmor - 4/28/2014, 8:46 AM
@doopie good write up btw... Red give for you...:)
MrSotoMan - 4/28/2014, 8:46 AM
@Batmor- Of course they have the right to say whatever.

There is a difference though, and he does know that he does start up a flame war in that sense, not to mention the comment section of the initial picture of Johnny Storm Flaming On.

So of course, his intention isn't put out clear, but it is obvious before writing he knows what would strike up something.

So yes, something that many fans want to love, is being called Batman & Robin for this generation as an opinion is simply put as an over-exaggeration. An opinion that is merely an over-exaggertion.
MrBatmor - 4/28/2014, 9:00 AM
@soto there is no doubt he wants to start a flame war but we cant accuse him of anything because it is his opinion.... We can actually say the same thing about everybody...intruder is also not a troll because those are his opinions...i don't know man this is the grey area..

I used to try to get along with everyone, then I realized I felt like I couldn't have MY OWN opinion. Phuck that. I can and do have my own opinions, and I feel like disagreeing with Josh almost all the time. Its not that I dont like him, I just dont agree. Simple as that.
FirstAvenger - 4/28/2014, 3:03 PM
Good article Doop.

Nice little article! Lots of reasonable comments from reasonable users! I agree about TDKR! ;)
staypuffed - 4/28/2014, 5:49 PM
I liked TDKR...
Doopie - 4/28/2014, 6:18 PM
TDKR had its moments, I love the Bane fight in the sewers, but overall it was a let down for me. I really had my hopes up too. It's not a totally terrible film it just could have been so much more
dethpillow - 4/28/2014, 7:42 PM
the nature of the site assumes that anything you say might be responded to and called out for.

so do what thou wilt.

Doop,

If you were a big tittied Jennie Finch fast pitch softball playing beauty carrying a big plate of saucy ribs, I would love you.

But I am guessing you aren't, so I'll just say, "I agree 100%"
