"V" Director May Take Over Conan Movie

Ratner is out, but could we already have a new director for the alleged "not-a-remake" Conan movie?
With the glorious news that Brett Ratner will not be working on Conan, it seems the studio is keeping it's nose to the ground in search of a director.

From CHUD:

The producers have been wasting no time in trying to get a new helmer for the franchise reboot, which after months of development still needs some script work and a leading actor. And according to my very trustworthy, very much correct in the past source, they've found their director:

James McTeigue.

Best known of what was considered the first good Alan Moore adaptation (though not for accuracy), V for Vendetta, James McTeigue might have what it takes to keep the "spirit" of Conan in the film.

The question now, is the money right?

CHUD continues:

But will he have the money needed to do it right? My source fears that the loss of Ratner means a loss of budget. Ninja Assassin seems to be budgeted at around 50 million, and V For Vendetta was 54 million. Both look terrific - McTeigue is getting every penny on screen - but Conan will be much costlier, effects-wise. Will the current rumored 120 million dollar budget be slashed with this new director?

Personally speaking (as a huge Alan Moore, and Robert E. Howard fan), I think V for Vendetta kept the "spirit" of the Moore's concept, while not necessarily adhering to a word for word adaptation. It showed that McTeigue worked with what he had, and worked very well with it. V was originally intended to show two political extremes butting heads (Facism and Anarchism), but to make it more playable to a general audience, and to help with the budget, it was made as extreme Conservatism vs. extreme Liberalism. Seems to me, this was an acceptable change, and in no way prevented the thought provocation for the audience.

This is a good thing for Conan, while the general concept is our favorite Cimmerian busting skulls and wooing wenches, there were a lot of social concepts that Robert Howard presented in the stories.

Such as presented in, "The Tower of the Elephant", "Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing." Conan's straight-forward tactics seem to collide with "social norms" in many of the stories, and McTeigue has proven himself capable of adapting such a social paradox for a general audience.

WHO SHOULD PLAY CONAN---THE ROCK. WHEN I WATCHED SCORPION KING I WAS LIKE" DUDE, THIS GUY COULD BE CONAN.."
GUNSMITH - 5/9/2009, 2:50 PM
But he was the SCORPION KING ? @ GUNSMITH @ I personally think an UNKNOWN!! Heh heh, i bet you guessed i'd say that!!!
LEEE777 - 5/9/2009, 2:57 PM
Hmm interesting...I think he would be a good director for this film..not bad! Now the casting....
Agent13 - 5/9/2009, 3:21 PM
@LEEE-UNKNOWN WOULD BE COOL, BUT IF THEY CAST THE WRONG GUY OR SOMEONE THAT DOESNT SET WELL WITH FANS, ITS VERY PARTICULAR, CONAN WAS THE BOMB..ARNOLD REALLY EMBODIED THAT ROLE
GUNSMITH - 5/9/2009, 3:30 PM
Yeah i was meaning a UNKNOWN that looked like CONAN an the size of CONAN and could act!!! But yeah @ GUNSMITH @ your right man, whoever gets it has got big shoes to fill!
LEEE777 - 5/9/2009, 3:35 PM
sucks that the producers would cut his budget because he considered a 2nd tier director, i would rewatch v for vendetta more often then anything created by ratner.. thats just no fair to me.

this guy is an intelligent guy i think he will succeed with this

ps who ever wrote that v versage in that movie v when he first beat up the finger men.... incredible stuff
loganaspatch - 5/9/2009, 3:44 PM
I dunno .... so much import' being placed on the ability to act. But wasnt the fact that Arnie po'Jarnie had very little skills in the english language and probably even less acting skills what made his character of a Barbarian sooo believable ? Wow! for a minute it actually sounded like i knew what i was talking about
@LEE777- yer number 2? eww thats just gorss ;P
shibazz - 5/9/2009, 5:56 PM
I agree that an unknown should be cast, but IMO I don't think it should be an Arnold clone. REH wrote Conan as a big guy yes, but he also discribed him as being fast as a panther with a lean muscular physique. Again IMO, the chosen actor should be tall, ripped but not necessarily bulky like a bodybuilder, and he should have some knowledge of marshall arts that includes sword skills. With that said, my choice for the lead is actor Darren Shahlavi. You can find his stats on IMDb.com. And no, I am not Darren nor do I know him. Either way, I'm very happy that Brett Ratner is no longer on this project.
Lycanchylde - 5/9/2009, 7:52 PM
um...cool!
vonstallin - 5/9/2009, 8:04 PM
@shibazz--Exactly! And thats why arnold was so good at emotionless killer robot character.

I loved V so im down wid dis.

CHUD- Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers, eh? Anyone remember that?
Betty - 5/9/2009, 9:26 PM
Heavens gates! i sure do remember that... but i never saw it. i'ma big chicken. no likey scary movies. every time i walk by a manhole its like "C.H.U.D.'s , run away!!" should i watch it ?
shibazz - 5/10/2009, 2:04 AM
Lmao SHIBAZZ @ Hey atleast i ain't 3rd lol! Oh wait,,, i was heh heh heh!!! An you want a nice happy movie go an watch THE STRANGERS! You'll love it, heh.

Lycanchylde @ It wouldn't be a ARNOLD clone if they got a UNKNOWN that looked like CONAN from the books etc! I never thought ARNOLD ever looked like CONAN but of course he is CONAN (if that makes any sense lol). Yeah but your right though, the movie will suck an flop if they try and do that with a ARNOLD clone!!! Didn't they do that with that lame tv series with that B-movie actor Bret something, i here he used to be a body double too for ARNOLD, anyway i only ever saw the tv movie that came free with a dvd magazine.

"But wasnt the fact that Arnie po'Jarnie had very little skills in the english language and probably even less acting skills what made his character of a Barbarian sooo believable"

It was what made him believable as a barbarian, the issue is, that often in Howard's fictional history, what you consider the stereotype is often quite the opposite. Yes Conan was a barbarian, but he was also very deep emotionally, and spiritually. His preference merely opted on the side of simplicity. Conan could probably give you a 12 point discussion on the religions and priests of Aquilonia, and then finish it with, "They are all worthless commoners merely bloating themselves with man-made self importance. I need no god to live."

Then he would bed with a street harlot...

And that is why Conan rules! :)

shibazz-- I cant remember if its good or not. It scared me when i was a kid. They were radioactive morlocks that developed a taste for human flesh. Young hot female flesh! And there might be a wet muppet in there somewhere, no that was the Ghoulies.
Betty - 5/10/2009, 3:02 PM
yikes!/! i dunno , if i am ready. J.Ayers description happy! wet scary muppets .... sad =(

Hot young female flesh..... hppay!
shibazz - 5/11/2009, 5:22 AM
and by reading the headline, I thought Kenneth Johnson.....

TheJester - 5/11/2009, 5:45 AM
I remember seeing CHUD a long time ago when my buddies and I used to go see all those cheesy horror films that came out. Good campy fun. Ghoulies was another fun one. Hadn't thought about THAT in a long time! LOL

I'm also happy to see Conan coming back. He's a good character that could start a good series of movies with good writers and a good actor in the lead. Looks like things are off to a good start with the director. I really enjoyed V for Vendetta. I hope this is a good sign.
comicb00kguy - 5/11/2009, 7:21 AM
John Ayers: Amen to that brother!
