EDITORIAL: Reasons Marc Webb should return for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

I finally saw The Amazing Spider-Man yesterday (check out my review for it in my latest 2 in 1) and with Marc Webb having yet to make a decision, here is my reasons he should comeback for the Amazing sequel.

By Nick Salinski - 8/13/2012
1: Romance

If there is one thing I feel Marc Webb has executed better than any other director for a comicbook film is the romance. He casted actors who had a real chemistry together and you believed that the characters are real. Imagine what he could do if they threw Mary Jane into the mix or Felicia Hardy.

2: Feel

The Amazing Spider-Man has a feel, that the best way I can describe it is that it feels natural and organic. It has a specific feel that if Marc Webb were to not comeback for TASM 2, it wouldn't really feel right and it would look weird if to watch it after TASM.

3: Pacing

He gave the film a perfect pacing and I think the sequel could benefit from the pacing he gave the first film, if not improve on it.

Villains

Norman Osborne

Lets just say for argument sake that the mystery figure in TASM is Norman Osborne. Marc Webb could have Norman be the main bad guy without really being the "bad guy". He could pull the strings, it could help with The Untold Story and pacing, speaking of pacing, here is my idea for who the sequels baddie should be.

If they do decide to not stray from the first movie, they could continue the cross species one more time and introduce Puma. Tweak his origin and it could be good or (even though the trilogy would only have one different villain in the whole trilogy to seperate itself from the previous trilogy) they could do The Death of Gwen Stacy as the basis of the second film, finish the untold story and also introduce the symbiote and have Peter get rid of it at the end of the film, attach itself to Eddie Brock and have it lead to the third and final film to be Spider-Man vs. Venom. Marc Webb is a great story teller and I think if they keep him for the whole trilogy and possibly go with my ideas, you could have one of the best trilogies ever and potentionally topping the original trilogy.

Personally I'm indifferent, after Iron Man, Batman Begins and First Class I felt those directors were a perfect fit to film. Similarly Joe Johnston was perfect for the period setting of Cap.

What Webb brought was a certain humanity to the characters for me that was more important than the romance. Peter and Gwen were good together but for me they come in third next to the will they won't they relationship from Iron Man and the bittersweet Captain America romance.

Webb had the right villain but used him wrong and while good elements were in place not much story telling was achieved, as to who is responsible for that I don't know but I feel a director should want to tell a specific story.

This was like The Incredible Hulk for me, I enjoyed it but couldn't be bothered if someone else took the reigns.

I think we should have Venom for the second with Electro and maybe even Kraven... Better yet... make it 6 movies :)

I think that Gwen shouldn't die until the third movie. Having her die in the second would probably lead to Mary Jane in the third and i don't want to see her until the 4th movie.

I do agree that Norman Osborn should be pulling the strings, but he shouldn't even be fully seen as Green Goblin until the third movie where he is the villain and kills off Gwen.

I think that the symbiote should be hinted at in the third movie as one of the things that Richard Parker and Curt Connors where working on. This could lead to a great Venom vs Spiderman movie and I would want it to spin off into a agent venom movie.

I would love it if Webb will return, I didn't care about Spidey too much until TAS, but now I'm hooked, great CBM, great director

I completely agree. The Amazing Spider-Man was fantastic, and the sequel won't be nearly as good unless it has good ole' Webb back in charge. Fleshing out characters just comes so natural to the guy!

I'm not attached. The shining parts of this film were the performances, and you can credit that to Garfield and Stone more than you can the director. If he returns, that's neat, but I don't feel as if there's any unique stamp he put on the original that will carry over.

This was such a great movie I wanna go see it again but I'm too lazy to.

@Sotojuice how is not logical if it is Norman? He is referenced plenty of times in the movie and we know hes there. So how exactly does it not make sense?

We keep going to the traditional rogues gallery for picks, but I'd love to see Spider-Man actually fight some real crime in a sequel. I wanna see the mob villains pop up; Silverman, Hammerhead, and the Enforcers. They would have ties to Oscorp, and we could see a few classic villains like Electro, Kraven, or the Chameleon work on their behalf. And behind the scenes is Norman Osborn, pulling the strings and becoming the Green Goblin.

Bring Webb back! COCKSUCKERS!!!!!!!!!!!

Eh.

I stand by the fact that the two have a relationship less developed than the one Hal Jordan has with Blake Lively in Green Lantern.

She likes him because he's...smart, cute, and Spider-Man? And he likes her because...she's the first girl to notice him.

But this is Marc Webb's schitck. This and 500 Days both capitalize on fantastical relationships with absolutely nothing to them. Both Peter (with his betrayal of his promise to Captain Stacy) and JGL's character in 500 (with him supposedly falling for the new girl at the end without learning a single thing about what happened in 90% of the movie) are fairly fickle when it comes to relationships.

Webb needs to look to Linklater's Before Sunrise/Sunset movies for "real" relationship development. Those movies do it in the most perfect way I've ever seen.
BattlinMurdock - 8/13/2012, 2:28 PM
Oh, and High Fidelity.

That's a movie all about dysfunctional relationships and why it's necessary to realize that you can't live your love life fantastically.

Examples:

Rob: Should I bolt every time I get that feeling in my gut when I meet someone new? Well, I've been listening to my gut since I was 14 years old, and frankly speaking, I've come to the conclusion that my guts have shit for brains.

Rob: It would be nice to think that since I was 14, times have changed. Relationships have become more sophisticated. Females less cruel. Skins thicker. Instincts more developed. But there seems to be an element of that afternoon in everything that's happened to me since. All my romantic stories are a scrambled version of that first one.

Rob: I can see now I never really committed to Laura. I always had one foot out the door, and that prevented me from doing a lot of things, like thinking about my future and... I guess it made more sense to commit to nothing, keep my options open. And that's suicide. By tiny, tiny increments.

Rob: She didn't make me miserable, or anxious, or ill at ease. You know, it sounds boring, but it wasn't. It wasn't spectacular either. It was just good. But really good.

Rob: I'm tired of the fantasy, because it doesn't really exist. And there are never really any surprises, and it never really...
Laura: Delivers?
Rob: Delivers. And I'm tired of it. And I'm tired of everything else for that matter. But I don't ever seem to get tired of you, so...

And finally:

Rob: Top five things I miss about Laura. One; sense of humor. Very dry, but it can also be warm and forgiving. And she's got one of the best all time laughs in the history of all time laughs, she laughs with her entire body. Two; she's got character. Or at least she had character before the Ian nightmare. She's loyal and honest, and she doesn't even take it out on people when she's having a bad day. That's character.
[holds up three fingers]
Rob: Three;
[long pause, hesitantly]
Rob: I miss her smell, and the way she tastes. It's a mystery of human chemistry and I don't understand it, some people, as far as their senses are concerned, just feel like home.
[shakes his head, recollecting, then looks back and lip synchs 'four' while holds up four fingers]
Rob: I really dig how she walks around. It's like she doesn't care how she looks or what she projects and it's not that she doesn't care it's just, she's not affected I guess, and that gives her grace. And five; she does this thing in bed when she can't get to sleep, she kinda half moans and then rubs her feet together an equal number of times... it just kills me. Believe me, I mean, I could do a top five things about her that drive me crazy but it's just your garden variety women you know, schizo stuff and that's the kind of thing that got me here.

THAT'S what Peter Parker needs to be realizing and that's what Marc Webb needs to learn as a filmmaker. I don't want to see "cute." I want to see something that genuinely motivates these characters.
BattlinMurdock - 8/13/2012, 3:09 PM
I stand by the fact that it's not Osborn...because Osborn, a rich, respected individual, wouldn't have to "sneak" into anywhere.

If he had something to say to Connors, he'd go during visitor hours, ask, and leave.

@Spidey23

TASM 3- Black Suit, Peter finds out that his dad created a suit that could cure cancer, but the suit was banned because it was deemed uncontrollable. Peter wants the suit to be showed to the real world, so he goes and steals it. He uses this suit when Gwen dies, and when HE kills Goblin.

How would a suit "cure" cancer? Would you have to always wear it to keep the cancer at bay, or does the suit just get rid of it upon contact, rendering the fact that it's "uncontrollable" a moot point. Also, cancer is not just a disease that can be "cured." That's why there is no "cure" for cancer. It's much more complicated and intricate than the flu and can't be wiped out vaccination or things of that ilk.
