5 Reasons why Electro is a bad choice for TASM 2
The Amazing Spider-Man 2's villain is rumored to be Electro. Here I give 5 reasons why I personally feel this is a bad choice.
Spider-Man is my favorite superhero, he (in my opinion) has the best rogues gallery and The Lizard is my all time favorite comicbook villain. Sure, like I said I think he has the best rogues gallery but that doesn't mean I like all of his villains. Electro is one of them. As soon as I heard that he was rumored to be the villain, I was immediately disappointed. I've never found anything about him to be interesting or his powers and his fights with Spider-Man to be exciting. Sure, my defense isn't all that great considering my favorite villain is a giant lizard, whom by many is considered to be a weak villain in The Amazing Spider-Man due to his motivations in the film and what he looks like. If anything, they were true to the comics for 95 percent of the character. Maybe more. Here are 5 reasons I disapprove of Electro as the villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Let's face it, no one likes hollywood changing our characters. Whether it's the hero or the villain. For Electro, they'll have to COMPLETELY change the characters origin and who he is (except for the name). The reason I say this goes back to an earlier comment in the article, he is just flat out not an interesting character. He wouldn't work in a movie unless they completely redid the character. Maxwell Dillion was working on a powerline when he got struck by lightning and miraculously survived. He got the powers of electricity and became a theif. I'm going to ask you a question, what part of that is interesting? Let alone interesting enough to be put on film?
I'm not saying he is a Dr.Doom ripoff, because I know he isn't. But, think about it. In the mind of the casual movie audience member (there are some who remember Fantastic Four), Electro would be ripping off Dr.Doom because of his powers. Quite frankly, I prefer a villain in a franchise to have powers or gadgets that are different from a villain in a different franchise. This is not a good thing, especially for a villain in a reboot trilogy.
I know that a worry with any superhero flick, whether the hero or the villain is the costume. Electro has a ridiculous costume. The only way I can see this working is if they go with the look from The Gauntlet. Alot of you don't like the "Power Ranger" Goblin from Spider-Man (I am one who thinks it's pretty cool). Do you honestly want them to ruin Electro's look? I hope not. His costume is bad, yes. It needs revamped to a certain degree, yes. Does it need to not resemble anything from the comics? No, It does need to resemble the comicbook counterpart in someway so we can recognize the character.
In my opinion, there have only been one underwhelming and unexciting fight scene in the Spider-Man franchise. The fight at the pier in Spider-Man 2. I did not like it. I liked the movie and I think it's one of the best comicbook movies and (in my opinion) the best Spider-Man movie, right behind The Amazing Spider-Man. But, I just didn't like the final battle. I don't want another unexciting fight scene and that's what we will get in my opinion IF Electro is chosen to be the villain (same with Kraven, Rhino, ect). Yes, he poses a physical threat to Spidey. But not in a good or exciting way. Spidey gets electrifyed if he touches Electro and water doesn't require much thinking to defeat him.
I know the whole idea of Spider-Mans enemies being from Oscorp is becoming tiresome for most people but, most of Spider-Mans enemies are from some sort of science origin. Make him an employee from Oscorp who has a grudge against his boss, has an accident one night and gains the power of electricity. He wants to murder his boss but Spider-Man stops him. This would make more sense in my opinion and will make the character interesting. It won't make me like the character, but at least the character himself would be interesting. Although, everything else would just be bad in my opinion.
These are my reasons why Electro shouldn't be the villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Again, I know my defense isn't much considering that my favorite is a giant lizard whos motives is turning people into humanoid lizards and have reptiles rule the earth again. But hey, at least the character overall is interesting, is a challenge for Spider-Man, makes for exciting fights and is overall a good villain. I think Vulture would be a better villain for the sequel because it would be easier to translate him to screen and would make for a better villain.
What do you think of having Electro as the villain in the sequel? Do you have any agree or disagreements with my points? Comment below and be respectful when you do.
