Five overlooked moments in The Amazing Spider-Man

I go over five moments that I feel are overlooked among the comicbook crowd in The Amazing Spider-Man

It's no secret that I am a supporter of, The Amazing Spider-Man, a film that has fans split down the middle. That being said, I recently found an article where the writer feels that TASM is on par with Spidey 3. Well, that's a lie to most and myself. But, it's an opinion. Here are five moments in The Amazing Spider-Man that I feel are over looked.

Uncle Ben's message



Probably in my top five favorite scenes in the film. People complain about "great power comes great responsibility" not being in the film. So what? I don't want to hear the same thing again. I'm not catch a lot of backlash for this but, I prefer this over the "great power" line. It's more inspirational and in the film, it never feels forced.

After Uncle Ben's death



It's a very saddening scene. Between Peter trying to listen to Uncle Ben's message, the incident at school and the music James Horner plays during the scene. It all blends together very well and probably one of the best scenes in the whole film. It overpowers (in my opinion, despite my love for the original trilogy) anything that the original trilogy did, emotionally.

Crane Scene



A lot of people found this scene to be cheesey. I never got that feeling. It found it to be a very triumphant moment for Spider-Man. It was neatly done and well paced. When people find this scene to remind them of a scene in the original Spider-Man film, I think they're just over looking it.

"Not choice, responsibility"



People found the end of this scene funny, I don't see how. I found it to be a very tense scene. It displays the hurt that Peter has been going through since his parents left. It is a very touching scene. I also prefer this over the "great power" line.

"I created him"



This scene and pretty much the whole movie had something that I felt was deeply lacking in the original trilogy (outside of the Daily Bugle). Chemistry. I don't feel any chemistry between the actors at all. Especially between Tobey and Kirsten. This scene was a very intimate, important scene but also is filled with chemistry between the two lead actors.

I'm sorry but these scenes just reminded me why this movie sucks, Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker was disturbingly socially awkward ,who looked all the time like he was about to cry and in many scene it was also weird how he suddenly lost his way talk normally. He was nothing like the Peter in 616 nor the Ultimate universe.

@Odin-Of course Peter is socially awkward. He is a nerd/Geek and never really had friends . And if you paid attention to the movie, after Peter got his powers, he became more arrogant and the sarcastic spidey we all know and love. You said in every scene he looked like he was going to cry. Again if you paid attention to the movie, you will know that their were reasons for that. This movie was AMAZING, and I agree that these scenes were underrated, but if you are to shallow to see that, go and read your comic books and stop seeing movies!

"With great power come great responsibility" is the entire edict with which Spidey is motivated. It is the rationalization that keeps him going on as Spidey. It is just as important as him getting bitten by a radioactive spider and gaining powers.

So yeah, people have a right to be mad that it wasn't in the film.

@CorndogBurglar: The message that Uncle Ben left on Peter's phone, I find to be as effective. It wasn't in the film because it would just feel like a rehash. I understand why they took it out and it worked for the best.

Honestly, the no "With great power, comes great responsibilty" was my only big problem with the movie. I think it wouldve been cool if at the end when Peter listens to the msg Uncle Ben says it there. But, if I cant have that, what they did is cool too. I agree with all your other scenes, though I prefer the high school fight scene over the crane scene.

The problem with the Amazing spiderman is that its so close behind the first. I mean the original trilogy is still on FX all the time. There hasent been enough time in between. Hopefuly this film (i liked it, didnt live it) laid solid groundwork for the sequal and for spidey moving forward.

@CorndogBurglar 'With great power comes great responsibility' is such a powerful theme in Spider-Man that it doesn't even need to be said anymore. Uncle Ben's new speech was basically the same thing just said a different way. Would have been nice if they somehow could've worked in the actual line, but the message still got across, both to Peter and the audience. The words weren't that important, it was the meaning behind them.
And this may seem like I'm nitpicking, but there were no radioactive spiders in any of the films. All the films had genetically engineered spiders instead. No radioactivity mentioned so far.

The thing I felt made The Amazing Spider-man better was Uncle Ben's death. Why? Because this time we actually saw it happen. In the other one Peter goes up and finds him dying but in this you actually see it and the brutality of his death really got me. Overall besides some minor plot issues, I really don't understand the hate for The Amazing Spider-man and if the other 3 had neevr been made I don't think it be attacked so much.

@SAT: I prefer the high school fight too but, it wasn't an over looked scene (I feel it's the best fight scene in any Spider-Man movie, with the exception of vs.Electro in the sequel. I hate electro).

high school fight was entierly CGI. which was great use by the animators and the physics they done, so props to them for that effort.

@JokerFan of course it wasn;t said in the comics but in the naroration of AF#15, any true spdier-man Fan knwos that, jsut the whole power responsiblitly soudns well, falsicfied, let me elaberate. it doesn;t soudn liek a real antrual saying to em, then agian my upbring is different form all of yours and the fact that i;m tenchilly an atustic kid should give mroe of a hint as to why. The whole loner aspect jsut didn't work How he got the girl int he end him beign a docuhe throguth the WHOLE FILm, neve rowrked for em at all, in fact the clsoet actor or incanration of spdier-man I LOVE and thoguth really hit it out field was josh keaton form spectacular spider-man. he wasn;t a docuhe, he could be coky at times, confidnet, but still light hearted and fun, and was actully funny for once. this verisonw as an MTV Ass who i eenve rcared about. adn hy should I? hell he remeiend me of everyoen in high school i went with and i didn't like high school ast all. But you broguth up your eprosnal reasons and I can only give you props for that. so congrats my friedn it was a interesting retrospect on why you love this crappy film which si still on PAR with Spider-Man 3.

This movie was awesome! people on this site like to bitch too much. All this criticism and the overly high expectations will kill cbm's on day and people will say "hey, we hated spidey 3 and green lantern, but at least we had them, now we don't have shit"

i think a lot of people know about comic book things from some cartoons and the movies, and not so much the actual comics. that's not a bad thing, unless that person says something is "shit" because it's "not like the comics" even when they have no idea what they are talking about

Martin Sheen was my favorite character in the movie. Obviously, he dies.
The most overlooked part from Uncle Ben was when he meets Gwen at school. It was fun.

Denis Leary was the back-up favorite... not-so-obviously, he dies.
He provided a foil for Peter to aspire to until the end, and was actually the most competent policeman this year in comic book movies. His death was a tool for foreshadowing, in an attempt to make the ending much more climactic. It's a shame, because he could have at least made it to the sequel.

I'm not invested in Spider-man anymore. I have the Raimi trilogy, so I'm good.

I don't know tons in the way of comic books (Sadly there are zero comic book shops near me, I would have to drive all the way to the cities which is an exhausting drive) But I know enough to get by, which in this case is knowing the difference between a Spider-Man fan, and a Raimi Spider-Man fan.

I just happen to be both, and I rather like TASM.

ASM is a strange case because it had so much going against it, in regards to it being a reboot, and the inevitable comparisons to the Raimi franchise. Studio meddling, and cutting out what could've been intricate parts to a very good film, is I what I think the biggest setback is. I'm a big spider-man fan, and had my judge face on the whole time, but ended up walking out happy. The look of the lizard...had to grow on me, and the unnecessary changes to the Spider-Man costume had to as well. If there was one thing that pulled me in on the deep, it was they showed one of Spider-Man's biggest themes/ flaws as a character, other than learning responsibility. And it's that he can't save everyone, no matter how hard he tries. The death of Captain Stacy, was, in my opinion, a very good example of that. His mantle of growing and being a hero, indirectly got the father of the girl he loves killed. That's two very big deaths in a very short period (Uncle Ben, Captain Stacy)
How being a hero affects the people around you, and the people closest to you.
In the comics, they either end up resenting Peter, dying, or becoming villains that he has some tie to. The ever looming death of Gwen Stacy in a future movie I think, might drill that point home. It was all fun and games until that fatal neck 'SNAP'. There are split camps on the film, and I can see why, but in terms of being able to relate, and feel the interactions on screen, I'd say this movie is my favorite Spidey film. I'd like to see more elaboration in the sequel. And I hope they let Electro play, and just be a villain. Sympathetic is ok, but I like my villains cold hearted.

This Movie Was mostly based of Ultimate

Uncle Ben Told Peter that exact thing but was changed just a little in the movies.

Peter was also a quiet kid, who kept to himself in Ultimate.

I feel that the responsibility speech in TASM was even more forced than just putting the Stan Lee line in there.

Alone these scenes are ok, within the movie they're pretty terrible.

Never really got a feeling of how hard its been for Peter in TASM he just comes off as a brat, they skip over so much good development of the character and try to get far on just his parents are dead.

He's pretty much anakin from the star wars prequels just a mixed bag of emotions with no real depth to them.

Awesome article. I completely agree. This was a well done movie, and I have the highest hope that the sequel will be even better, more so now because undoubtably when that comes out, Peter will be back in the suit in the comics rather then Doc Ock.

I liked how instead of uncle ben saying it flat out they made it so peter came to the realization that with great power comes great responsibility on his own. I know that a lot of people are angry about it but he will probably be in the sequal

I loved this movie, and I don't get the hate. Uncle Ben's 'responsibility' speech was way better and way less cheesy than the original line.

Well IMO it was a great movie. It had ALOT going against it, this is the fastest rebooted series and to make it even worse it's a reboot to a trilogy/series many loved very much. The raimi films were one of the first epic blockbuster CBMs it's one of the highest grossing film franchises ever. Also becasue it had so much going against it Sony went on an overkill in the marketing department pretty much giving out the whole movie. This was also a big mistake becasue of last minute edits, which you all should know that those scenes in trailers and clips were cut out. The similarity b/w this installment and the first raimi film proved to be its downfall crtically. Majority of crtics(amatuers) gave it a bad rating soley base on the fact it resembled the raimi film. Now that the first film is out of the way the second film does not have as much goin against many say it has massive potential becasue the cast and everything else. Not many ( but people on here) complained about the films qualities( story,acting wise). The sequel has an opportunity to show what this trilogy really is, it can shine without anything standing in the way.

Butthurts are just mad that it was better than TDKR.

all a matter of opinion bro. and my opinion is that it needed to include all of the deleted scenes to have actually made this a decent movie. this was clearly a movie they made in the editing room, which is not a good sign for a movie man. the director should know what movie they want to make before they start filming a frame. they cant just go oh lets just hire a couple writers and just film a bunch of scenes and see what works later. that always makes for a bad movie.

noow with that said.... the performances in this film were great. that is literally the only thing that saved this movie. if only the left the deleted scenes! damn you sony!


@lindsey35 this movie is not amazing. it is nowhere near amazing. TDKR is nowhere near amazing it tried too hard to be amazing and it failed. Avengers was pretty damn amazing because it actually worked. Tho avengers is FULL of flaws. only amazing on the fact that it was the hardest thing to put together and it worked out for everybody.

I'm a big Spidey fan. This movie added a few tiny elements that Raimi omitted. Garfield didn't bring anything new or better. The Lizard was terrible. I found Venom to be a poorly chosen villain, yet visually he is intimidating. The Lizard is almost comical.

I find it a little strange, almost disturbing, that a comic book movie had four major deaths. It kind of mutes the importance of Uncle Ben's epic death.

@ThunderKat: four deaths? There was Uncle Ben and Captain Stacy. You could count Peters parents but I wouldn't cause it's carrying over into the sequels more so than Uncle Ben and I wouldn't count Dr.Ratha cause it was a deleted scene. Cause it's a deleted scene, I would bring him back cause I don't consider that character dead.

While I disliked the movie (worse to me than Spidey 3), I thought there were lots of nice little things peppered here and there that were obviously the work of Marc Webb that were overlooked. And I hope that he gets more creative freedom the next go around so we can see what his Spidey movie really would be (if he even cares, really).

These are little things like Peter Parker playing on his phone after a little while of waiting for the Lizard. Love it, very nice little touch.

The scene where he asks Gwen out without asking her out is really great too. And it's the only time where I thought Andrew Garfield's stuttery performance benefitted the scene.

i think the naysayers against this movie need to just stop and shut their trap i very deeply love this film and those so called fans who felt no character devolopment or not spider enough just quit cuz ur makin a fool of yourself go back read the comics i mean i feel ya i grew up with the sam raimi trilogy 2 but u need 2 stop bein jackbutts and sobs and give this wonderful film the praise it deserves i loved every actor and supporting actor crew and i personally thought that crane scene was very powerful and taught u that people could rise above
