RUMOR: Identity of New Ultimate Spider-Man

With Peter Parker's demise in the Ultimate universe, Marvel is cryptically teasing away that someone will don the Spider-Man costume in his absence. One prevalent rumor is that a familiar name but unfamiliar face will don the red and blue.

Could Earth 1610 Ben Reilly be the new Spidey?

The new Spider-Man in the Marvel Ultimate Universe is set to debut in Ultimate Fallout #4. Internet rumors are running strong across the web that the new Spider-Man will be none other than Ben Reilly. Not to be confused with everyone's favorite clone of the 616, the ultimate version is not a clone of Peter's. From the Marvel wiki:

In the Ultimate Universe, Ben Reilly an African-American lab assistant at Empire State University, working with Curt Connors. He was involved in the creation of Ultimate Carnage by combining DNA from Curt Connors with that of Spider-Man, blended with ingredients from "The Suit" (better known as Venom), making Ultimate Carnage something of a clone of Spider-Man. Incidentally, he refers to Carnage (before its escape) as "Little Ben". At the end of the arc, he stole a second Spider-Man blood sample from the lab.

It was revealed that after Ben took the blood sample, he managed to create the five Spider-Man clones while under the employ of the CIA.



There's also a rumor that the new Spider-Man will be featured in the new Disney cartoon show but that seems highly unlikely. A trailer is expected to be shown at the San Diego Comic-Con so we wont have long to wait for answers.







"Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man is a comic book series published by Marvel Comics that debuted in August 2009 as part of the relaunch of Ultimate Marvel under the new "Ultimate Comics" imprint. It serves as a continuation of Ultimate Spider-Man, as well as an all-new series. Starting with the publication of the series' sixteenth issue (January 2011), Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man resumed the numbering of Ultimate Spider-Man (the series had already taken back the Ultimate Spider-Man title in the comic book's legal indicia with issue 3). The numbering will change again after issue 160 through the upcoming Ultimate Universe Reborn relaunch in August.

This is being done I can almost gaurantee you so that in the future Donald Glover can pull an War Machine in the new Spiderman series.

They had a video of the cartoon online featuring Spiderman and Mary Jane. I highly doubt they go with anyone other than Peter for that.

As for the new Spider-man, I doubt it's going to be Ben Reilly. Nobody is really very invested in that character. I wouldn't mind seeing him explored though. I think Eddie Brock is a good possibility.

Other Ethnicities other than Whites enjoy these characters and stories, as well as supports them. i don't see why having More culturally diverse core characters are a problem. Certainly would help break alot of stereotypes

Ever since Straczynski's run on ASM finished, it's been steadily down hill. Although they had one or two decent storylines during Dark Reign.

Please don't tell me you are a black guy who just made a "all black people look alike" joke...

Personally I don't mind having black superheros, heck, usually they are badass (i.e. Blade, Steel, War Machine, Cyborg, Falcon, Black Lightning...yeah that's right I went old school). I do have a problem with killing off a classic character and replacing them with black character just to pretend to be politically correct. OK, spider-man died, do we need a black spider-man? Only if it makes sense.

I mean its not like Marvel and DC only run white hero comics. There are alot of black heroes, but they just aren't popular enough. Are comic books racist? Well, the most famous comics were created in a time when racism was high. Batman, a white millionaire, Wonder Woman, a Greek amazon who so happens to look like a white supermodel, Superman, an alien who so happens to look like a white guy. I think as long as their ideals are intact, regardless of their origins, They aren't racist. Does that mean there are more white comic fans then black comic fans? I don't know and I don't think it matters, as long as the characters are true to themselves.

If it ever becomes public that that was the reason for a black Spider-man, then I think that comic will die quickly.

Never read the Ultimate Spider-man Series but do currently read the Amazing Spider-Man. Plus everyone knows that heroes always come back from the dead.

As nice as it would be to have the comic book hero look like you, the fact of the matter is people don't typically like change especially racial ones even in the comic book world.

Even if its for more equal representation, they still don't want that. Just keep things the way they are they say. Why change it they ask.

That should send up a red flag ( no pun intended).

Moreover, I am sure most of the people who don't want this character to change (temporarily) are not a person of color to begin with. Not to say that there aren't persons of color that don't want him to change but I would not be surprised if the majority of people who are against this or resistant to the possibility of this change are not persons of color.

Throw a few crums here and there and say you have black heroes... they are just not popular but the majority of superheros are white and a hand full of white superheroes just so happen to be the most popular.

As Jimdlux put it more or less, these heroes were created during a time when the government was an official institution of racism. Where the doctrine but separate but equal was a federal law. Persons of color had very little rights if any. For people to not want things to change during this "supposed"
post-racial age should tell you something

Again look at the blokes who are saying he should not be changed and you will see it is not persons of color (in general)

I am not pointing the finger and saying who or who is not racist. You and anyone else can figure that out by themselves by connecting the dots.

Ok, does Peter Parker matter anymore cuz Marvel cant seem to make up their mind and if they were gonna use a black guy, why give him a used name? Why not make him a character all his own? This is why I dont bother with Spider-man comics, a black spider-man is kool but this isn't how it should be done. Shoulda left Peter alone, the real Spider-man forever.

Everyone has pretty much settled into the idea that there will be a new person taking up the Spider-man identity in the Ultimate Universe. Why now that there's a POSSIBILITY that it's going to be a black guy, is there uproar? People are down for Ultimate Miguel O'Hara or any number of other random people, but if it's a black guy, all of a sudden that's all the character is about? They're not making Peter Parker black. They're telling the story of another character. If that character happens to be a black guy now, does that somehow make things radically different than if they chose to make it some random white guy?

I'm not saying I want this to happen. If I had my way, we'd keep going with Peter Parker. All I'm saying is, don't be so quick to assume that if they're making the new Spider-man black
A. The character's "blackness" is going to be the focus
B. It's going to somehow ruin things.

How does it make sense for spider-man to be black or white. That my friend is arbitrary given that any person black, brown, white or yellow could easily fit the profile of Peter Parker aka Spider-man because the conditions of his life and his experience can be identified with many youths growing up in urban/suburban areas.

It just so happens that Spider-man was created during a racist era by white men. Now based on that, it makes sense why he 'is' white and have always been white. Why on earth would white men make him (during that time) or any of the popular superheros yellow or green? Despite there being a "few" comic book heroes of color...

Because they are not men of color themselves. Because during this time racial inequality in every social category and experience was the norm during this era.

Remember that spider-man was created in 1962 when the racial tension between blacks and whites were high. Blacks demanded to be treated as first class citizens.. To stop being oppressed, exploited and degraded.

In addition, schools had not even desegregated (1954) Brwon v Board... contrary to popular belief. Just look at the litigation following Brown v. Board II e.g. Post-Adams litigation which led all the way up to 1992. And even now schools in California for example are more segregated than in the 1950s

All I am saying is Spider-man's skin color is arbitrary. It just so happens that he was created by certain people during a certain age which had a direct effect on his racial identity.

Ultimate Universe should've been concluded after Ultimates 2. That being said, I don't give a [frick] what ethnicity Spider-Man is. If he's not Peter Parker, he's not Spider-Man.

Even with this rumor i'm pretty sure it's going to be miguel o'hara.

aka spider-man 2099. especially since the big reveal can easily be timed with the release of the next game.

Blue, green, gray, pink... it doesn't really matter. The point is that Spider-Man is Peter Parker.
The only way it could work is if they took one of the clones from the Ultimate clone saga, and let him take Peter's place and life over.

But it's not just Marvel... DC is also doing it's best to make it's long time readers cancel books.
Think it over... your fan base has been with you for between 50 & 10 years for comic books, and the younger kids aren't getting into the books as quickly as they'd like. So how do they win the young kids over? Start everything over, reinvent characters!
Which is also the quickest way to kill off the real long time fan base.
I've dropped 8 books this month... will Ultimate Spidey be the next?

@Dangerjones I'm with you man. Ultimate Universe could've been a wonderful thing until they got all stupid with Ultimatum. There's only one Spiderman in my book. He is unique, just as the circumstances that created him should be unique. If they're going to do something stupid like kill him off, then he needs to be dead. No Peter Parker, NO SPIDERMAN. Done.

Meh, I dont really care about there being a new spiderman, as long as it the new comic sticks to the spiderman-ethos. Seeing how the whole point of the ULTIMATE imprint was to make the comics more accessible to new readers, i like the idea of doing something new with the major pillars of the universe (That being said, I liked what ultimatum tried to do, getting rid of some established characters in order to make way for the new, but god was it handled badly. Seriously though, aside from the USM tie in, that whole event was just horrible. I still wish i could erase it from my memory).

I'd much rather they introduce a new character and make him distinct from Peter Parker as Spiderman, and I'd rather not see Ultimate Miguel Harris (Whats the point of making ultimate every character when you have the chance to make something brand new, like The bombshell's... that mother daughter villian team, i cant think of their names) I don't particularly care if he's black or not, but it would be nice for the authors to act like there's some diversity in NYC. If for example the story involve Ben Reily, then I could see a black spiderman, but if it focuses more around Ezekiel or Madam Web and more clones and/or whatever(they havent done ultimate Ezekiel right? Im not into Ultimate-izing everyone but why the hell not) then who cares what the ethnicity is, as long as the character can carve out his own place in the Ultimate Universe.

Im hoping the new Spiderman is edgier than the Parker though, and that theyre enough differences in the two characters that it does seem like they killed off Parker for no reason.

(also, i'll be disappointed if the new spiderman is that north korean spiderman from out the avengers/ultimates tie in... that was just weak imo)

I kind of think that was his point; If they make the new Spider-Man a Black guy, it should be because it makes sense for that character (who just happens to be African American or whatever) to become the new Spider-Man. Rather than an obvious "Let's just make this version black - 'cause that's edgy!"

I do like that Miguel O'Hara idea though.

I am not sure...if this is Marvel running out of ideas or maybe an effort to sway comic readers from the DC reboot titles (provided many comic readers end up getting into the reboot).

@ knossis. Well said Main. I blame Quesada for the fall of my interst in my once favorite character... I'll always have a soft spot for spidey, but Joe was his greatest villian. I haven't seen him recover from those wounds YET!

It'd be nice to have a black, latino, or asian spider-man as long as it doesn't take killing Parker to do so!!! Make an intersting story with a fresh take on a loved hero, but don't kill an already established one to do it. I need to head to New York already. You M*$**&ukaz are RUNNING OUT!!!!! Oh and btw, isn't that what batman's doing now anyway. I blame the lack of pot on these lame ideas. Bad Marvel. Bad...
