WATCHMEN Derailed BIOSHOCK Movie Says Creator

Bioshock's Kevin Levine says Watchmen resulted in Bioshock's budget being cut by more than half and that he wasn't 100% confident with the director hired after Gore Verbinski departed the project.

Bioshock creator Ken Levine is finally elaborating a bit more on a 2011 statement that 'there's no burning [desire] to have a movie made just to get it made.' To summarize the sorted history, there was deal struck back in 2008 between Universal and 2K Games to adapt the video game Bioshock into a feature film with Gore Verbinski( Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Lone Ranger) attached to direct a script from John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator, The Last Samurai, Rango,Hugo, Lincoln, Skyfall). Verbinski left the project and Universal brought in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intruders) to direct. The film languished in development hell for quite some time because 2k Games retained creative control over the direction of the film and they didn't like what they were seeing and hearing. Below, Levine goes into greater detail about the sticking points.

There was a deal in place, and it was in production at Universal – Gore Verbinski was directing it. My theory is that Gore wanted to make a hard R film – which is like a 17/18 plus, where you can have blood and naked girls. Well, I don’t think he wanted naked girls. But he wanted a lot of blood.

Then Watchmen came out, and it didn’t do well for whatever reason. The studio then got cold feet about making an R rated $200 million film, and they said what if it was a $80 million film – and Gore didn’t want to make a $80 million film.

They brought another director in, and I didn’t really see the match there – and 2K’s one of these companies that puts a lot of creative trust in people. So they said if you want to kill it, kill it. And I killed it.

It was weird, as having been a screenwriter, begging to do anything, and then killing a movie on something you’d worked on so much. It was saying I don’t need to compromise – how many times in life do you not need to compromise? It comes along so rarely, but I had the world, the world existed and I didn’t want to see it done in a way that I didn’t think was right.

So in a nutshell, Gorbinski didn't want the budget cut from $200M down to $80M and decided to produce instead of direct and Fresnadillo was brought in to assume directorial duties. Levine didn't really think Fresnadillo was a good fit and killed the deal. It's been 3+ years since Bioshock 2 was released and I think the acclaim surrounding the property has dulled a bit. If Bioshock Infinite isn't a massive success come its release on March 26th don't expect a Bioshcok film to ever get made.

well, here you have it.

After Watchmen, Kick Ass, Dredd, failing at the box office, no studio will be keen to do R - rated adaptation of any game or comic book anymore. (still Kick Ass and Dredd didn't cost that much)

But should Bioshock be an R - rated movie?

yes, it' brutal but ...

Dark Knight pushed the boundaries of PG - 13 pretty well.

so, is 200 milion Bioshock pg 13 movie still an option ?
AsianVersionOfET - 3/13/2013, 1:47 AM
Ahhhh I want to see a Bioshock movie so bad. Get David Fincher to direct it and make it hard PG-13 and you will make back more than triple what you spent, I guarantee it.
jj2112 - 3/13/2013, 1:53 AM
Maybe it's for the better, it's a relatively obscure story for non-gamers and having little girls running around sticking needles in corpses wouldn't work with some audiences... the movie would fail. And, besides, videogame movies are always crap.
ahhmynuts - 3/13/2013, 1:54 AM
@jerry
resident evil is still making money. and watchmen wasnt very well known to the general public and dredd was mostly seen as just a remake. just turn offs for the general audience. i think one of the only video games that can make it to the big screen and pass as an R rated movie is gears of war at this point
jerryblake - 3/13/2013, 2:10 AM
@ahhmynuts

Resident Evil !!!!

I have no idea why people still wanna go to watch those movies.

It's like straight to dvd crapfest ...

SuperDude001 - 3/13/2013, 2:16 AM
I thought the film was planned way after Watchmen...oh well I'm not exactly gonna miss a film adaptation.
LordOfTheZegaRealm - 3/13/2013, 2:23 AM
Well that sucks!
Crossbones - 3/13/2013, 3:34 AM
I never understood how The Dark Knight pushed the PG-13 rating. It was dark. That's it. Nothing bout the movie suggests it could've been a R rated film.
jerryblake - 3/13/2013, 3:50 AM
Lizard1

The MPAA rating can be sometimes very restricted.
I honestly can't remember the movie (before Dark Knight)
that could get approved with the things like pencil trick, throwing the mob and breaking his leg, or show district attorney have his face on fire.

Yeah, it was nothing spectacular, most of the violence was off screen, but still.
jerryblake - 3/13/2013, 3:55 AM
AsianVersionOfET had a nice call for that : HARD PG-13
P862010 - 3/13/2013, 4:21 AM
rated r and expensive movies are just too much of a gamble for studios

Watchmen: Ultimate Cut is an amazing movie. People these days are so dumb, it blows my mind
SlaveMasterFlexXx - 3/13/2013, 5:01 AM
What is a hard pg13? Yah no such thing anyways prolly for the best ill take Resident Evil 6 over this Muhahahahahaha!!!!
ATrueHero1987 - 3/13/2013, 5:16 AM
I love Bioshock but its probably best that it did get made into a movie.
mattbo - 3/13/2013, 5:45 AM
A Bioshock movie would be amazing. I can see it as pg-13. They could probably make it work but an R rated movie would be better. Do what Evil Dead did and make the first cut NC-17 and edit it down to an R. Best video game and would love a movie but dont think it will ever happen.
IronManny819 - 3/13/2013, 5:50 AM
I don't understand the need to adapt video games into movies. Especially now. If I were adapting a video game into a movie, I'd do something that's not so plot-heavy. Like a CGI Mario Bros movie, or like, an over the top Contra movie, so I have room to develop a story. Trying to condense a 10 hour video game that has an emphasis on plot and cutscenes into a 2 hour movie will just make for a movie that ultimately feels rushed and will more than likely fail to live up to the expectations set by the source material.

i take your maniacal laugh and simply raise the bar by adding

I dont give a damn what anyone says I liked Watchmen
TheHeat - 3/13/2013, 6:28 AM
@JerryBlake

So, no Deadpool movie? :(
BboiBlack - 3/13/2013, 6:38 AM
Gore loves money
jerryblake - 3/13/2013, 6:39 AM
@TheHeat

Don't know. They been quiet about for a while.
I think Rothman said that there are still plans for R- rated Deadpool flick, but that was before Fox send his ass on retirement.
White - 3/13/2013, 6:44 AM
Hard PG-13? Lol!!!

Bioshock is brutal so it needs to be R-rated movie.

TDK didn't push any boundaries... No blood and kills were out of screen. It was like any other PG-13 movie for kids. And now you want Bioshock movie for kids? No thanks.
Chewtoy - 3/13/2013, 6:49 AM
Eh, I completely understand why studios wouldn't want to risk a $200m budget with a film that cuts off a massive segment of the audience from seeing it. "The Matrix Reloaded" is pretty much the only huge-budget "R" rated film to hit the kind of box office needed to justify the cost, and "The Matrix Revolutions" plummeted from there, showing how risky it is even with an eagerly awaited, known property.

I'd love to see studios take more risks, but then it isn't my $200m on the line.
fettastic - 3/13/2013, 6:59 AM
Bioshock missed it's window. A film could have been incredible. Gore Verbinski is a great director and I remember at the time thinking he was a perfect fit between Pirates and The Ring.
jerryblake - 3/13/2013, 7:01 AM
IronFan93

Yeah, your probably right. It's better to make it R, so it would not ended like Max Payne.

I forgot about big revelation, after that the things got kinda bloody. Can't figure out how to make that scene PG - 13.

Plus if you wanna keep Cohen character in the movie you probably keep it R. That guy was nut.
jerryblake - 3/13/2013, 7:04 AM
As for Dark Knight, I stand my ground.

your penis is soft. Sorry :) couldn't think anything constructive.

fettastic - 3/13/2013, 7:07 AM
When I was a kid in the 70's and 80's R rated films was the NORM. There was no PG-13, but frankly PG got away with more than PG-13 does today. Jaws was PG, Airplane with giant, jumping breasts was PG.

Remember sex scenes? They popped up in most films and they are extremely rare today. Excalibur has 3 sex scenes for example!
jerryblake - 3/13/2013, 7:09 AM

MUST ... GET ... SOBER ....
SlaveMasterFlexXx - 3/13/2013, 7:18 AM
@jerryblake lol Deadfall cage is the best. And on Deadpool yah actually the updates sounded more promising after Rothman was fired but still unlikely, I wish tho.
ATrueHero1987 - 3/13/2013, 7:19 AM
From the looks of Bioshock Infinite, they could get away with make that game into a PG-13 movie. Won't know for sure until I get it.
jerryblake - 3/13/2013, 7:20 AM
@FreakingIntelligentRobertGriffin

that is the lamest excuse for fapping, I have ever heard
SlaveMasterFlexXx - 3/13/2013, 7:23 AM
@jerryblake who needs an excuse to fap?
Shadowelfz - 3/13/2013, 7:27 AM
Meh. I love playing BioShock but I can live without a movie. Its a cool idea but the game itself was amazing and I doubt a movie will be anything but a let down in comparrison a la Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Doom and every other game to movie adaptation. Also they really dont have to make it R. Yeah the game was gory as hell but a good director can clean it up just enough to push that PG 13 rating.

Watchmen, IMO, was one of the few adaptaions that was better than its source.
SeaSerpentine - 3/13/2013, 7:28 AM
@jerryblake If Kick-Ass underperformed, how is it getting a theatrical sequel?
jerryblake - 3/13/2013, 7:28 AM
You must have an excuse when the judge ask you ...
fettastic - 3/13/2013, 7:30 AM
I thought Silent Hill was a brilliant adaptation and frankly the best video game film of all time. The recent sequel is pretty meh though.
SlaveMasterFlexXx - 3/13/2013, 7:37 AM
My excuse we were talking about faping so I fapped.
jerryblake - 3/13/2013, 7:38 AM
@SeaSerpentine

Kick Ass is kinda another story. It think it was financed by Vaughn and friends, then the studio saw it and they bought rights to distribution. (Lions Gate?). It underperformed, but only for studio.

My guess is that Kick Ass 2 is financed again by Vaughn and friends.

But i could be wrong. See the old guy movie above :)
MovieTheaterLad - 3/13/2013, 7:39 AM
Holy christ John Logan was writing the script? Literally every movie listed for him in those parenthesis either won or got nominated for an Oscar.

And you could have had the director of the most succesful pirate movies ever made direct a movie that takes place under the ocean.

Real shame.
jerryblake - 3/13/2013, 7:41 AM
SlaveMasterFlexXx

You DEVIL !!!!
storyteller - 3/13/2013, 9:22 AM
When it comes to the Dark Knight pushing the pg-13 rating, there were quite a few scenes where if the camera didn't change or things were made more explicit it would have earned an R.

For instance many scenes people people getting shot are bloodless. The commissioner and judge dying could have been made more explicit. Gamble getting this throat slash could have been shown. Rachel's dead body. Exploding body parts.....etc

We know this all happened in the film but it's only implied and not shown. When your in the theater, most people complete the image in their heads. After you watch it a few times you notice the trick.
DarkGrifter - 3/13/2013, 10:00 AM
Franshu - 3/13/2013, 10:38 AM
Like AsianVersionfET said, if you get David Fincher to direct and make it a hard PG-13, it can be magic. Besides, I think sometimes it's scarier to suggest things rather than showing them in all their gore-y magnificence. I'm just saying.
fettastic - 3/13/2013, 12:59 PM
Wait...Gamble got his throat slashed? Oooooohhhh......ok, that makes sense now.
Luminus - 3/13/2013, 3:23 PM
He made the right choice. This movie would have failed, guaranteed. The only reason big budget movies make their money back is because "everyone" goes to see them. Films like the Dredd are for fans and so they don't do well. Dredd was not commercial in any way and it's easy to see that's why it didn't do well. This is why those horrid Transformers movies make so much money. They are all about flash and comedy and mindless action.

Batman Begins, for example – though a good movie – wasn't a big movie, if you remember. It's mostly Heath Ledger's performance that turned that franchise into the juggernaut that it is.
