BOX OFFICE: Weekend Actuals For AFTER EARTH, IRON MAN 3 And More
The $130M After Earth debuted to a disappointing S27.52M this weekend but all hope is not lost for the Will Smith and M.Night Shyamalan joint venture. Plus, updates on Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness.
Amid reports of a failure for After Earth, keep in mind that Will Smith, (just like Tom Cruise) does the majority of his box office power lifting overseas these days. Men In Black 3 earned 71% of its box office total overseas and Hancock earned a comparable 67% of its gross earnings internationally as well. While not expected to cross the $70M mark here in the U.S., experts predict that After Earth could earn 3x that number in foreign markets for a $280M worldwide gross. Nothing stellar to be sure but certainly not a failure of Battleship proportions.
Iron Man 3 earned another $8.44M domestically and in its 5th week of release. Its earnings currently total $1.18B on a $200M production budget.
Star Trek Into Darkness earned $16.7M in its third week of release. Its worldwide gross currently sits at $328.9M on a $190M production budget. The film has still not opened in a number of international territories so the film's current box office performance is not as dire as it seems at first blush. Many estimates have the film finishing in the $500M range, well above the $385M the 2009 reboot earned.
