BOX OFFICE POLL: 'PACIFIC RIM', How Much Will It Make?

BOX OFFICE POLL: 'PACIFIC RIM', How Much Will It Make? BOX OFFICE POLL: 'PACIFIC RIM', How Much Will It Make?

Much has been made in the last few weeks about the opening weekend potential of Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" at the domestic box office. Some say it won't beat "Grown Up 2" while others estimate the film will take home nearly $70M. How much do you think the film will earn?

A report that "Pacific Rim" was going to be a full-fledged box office flop prompted Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures to kick the film's marketing efforts into overdrive. But was it enough? Initially, the film was said to be tracking for an opening-weekend domestic-total of $25 - $30M. Not good considering "Pacific Rim's" estimated $180-$200M price tag. As recent as today, predictions have come in that the film will earn $44M or as high as $66M this weekend. In yesterday's midnight showings, the film earned nearly $4M dollars which was on par with "World War Z"; a film that went on to earn $66M at the US box office in its first week of release.

True, box office predictions for "Pacific Rim" have been all over the place, varying to large degrees depending on which trusted source you're reading. In comparison, tracking for "Grown Ups 2" has remained relatively solid at $40M. But to be fair, these wildly varying figures are due to the fact that "Pacific Rim" is a new property, based on an original idea without a comic book, video game or novel to establish pre-existing brand awareness. Analysts really have no idea what the film's true earning potential is and are guessing more so than usual. To that end, do you think you can make a better prediction than the experts? What do you think the final tally will be for "Pacific Rim" on Monday?

"When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse."

I'm sorry, but I find it hard to believe Grown Ups 2 will make more money in the opening week than Pacific Rim.

The first Grown Ups wasn't even a good movie IMO. I would rather see Happy Gilmore or Billy Madison get a sequel.

A comedy making more money than a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters? Come on! I say $51-65$M.

Anyone who likes Robots, Aliens and/or Anime should watch Pacific Rim. It was a really good take on the genre.

I can't imagine any guy deciding to see GU2 over Pacific Rim. Any woman for that matter. It's giant robots vs monsters for [frick]'s sake!! The other option is watching Adam Sandler recycle stale jokes and voice in an attempt to stay relevant. If GU2 makes more money, I will lose all faith in humanity and pray to whoever is listening to send a planet-killing comet, as humanity will have lost all right to exist.

hats off to del Toro. Pacific Rim had the most spectacular action scenes in any movie this summer.. they made all the repetitive building crumbling in mediocre of steel look even more uninspired and dull...

We all know wot [frick]s up box office is the women element. I guarantee you that a much higher percentage of the audience for grown ups will be women. Anytime there are movies i dont understand how any one could watch. Upon inspection you will find the major audience that watched it will be women. To me grown ups is a tv movie and at most should be going for 10 mil opening.

People only seem to care about the numbers. How much will it make? Who cares?! The kids I teach couldn't care less about what's on that YouTube video - they wanna see how many hits it got. We have one screwed up society in terms of what we value.

I highly recommend everyone to not see this movie in IMAX, for some reason the 3D conversion hurt the effects of the movie….it made everything look bigger than it should’ve been. No lie, I came out of the theater with a headache. An employee at the theater told me that the regular version is better for the eyes. I still enjoyed it and I’m going to see it again in the regular theater to get a better experience

@jessepostal This is Grown Ups 2 we're talking about here. It's not like Pacific Rim is going up against the first Hangover movie or Wedding Crashers. It's just hard to believe IMO.

Pacific Rim deserves as Much as MOS got on the weekend, and deserves to end way more. The best blockbuster yet this year, Star Trek and Pacific Rim are the best movies of action. Grown ups 2 sucks, despicable me is good (MU is better IMO)

i saw this movie in 3D...and it did NOT hurt my eyes...and i had no problem with it in 3D...yes it will probably be better in IMAX 3D...but 3D is just fine!!

THIS MOVIE IS BAD ASS....for those comparing it to transformers.....transformers aint got SHIT!!! on this...makes transformers look like TRASH for real...even though they are 2 different category
but this movie is amazing!! i suggest all of you go see it in theaters IT NEEDS TO BE SEEN ON THE BIG SCREEN do not wait for DVD or anything...

this movie is bad ass...
and as for the critics...[frick] critics...they screwed MOS over and now screwing pacific rim over!
