Should Apocalypse be in X-Men: Days of Future Past?

Why the ancient mega-villain might be too much too soon.

I ask the question because it wasn’t long ago that reports came in about FOX possibly jumping on the ‘shared cinematic universe’ train that Marvel so masterfully pulled off, and DC/WB so desperately wants to imitate. Producers insist that X-Men is just as rich, with just as many characters to pull off an expanded universe of their own, through multiple films. And they are completely right.

But if that’s the case, what role does Days of Future Past play in this plan? Is this the movie that course-corrects an admittedly muttled continuity with the existing films? Is this the feature that kick-starts a grander master plan? Either way, if Apocalypse is the villain, they might be (pardon the expression) blowing their load too soon.

Why? Because the mutant known as En Sabah Nur should be the end game. It’s like Superman fans asking for Darkseid in the first movie. Imagine if Avengers lead with Thanos from the start? Apocalypse is the type of villain that leaves the audience asking, “Where do we go from here?” He’s someone you build to, and with a name like Apocalypse, that should be a given. The ancient mutant comes rich with fascinating powers, intriguing agendas, and an ominous set of Four Horsemen. I think about Silver Surfer and Galactus, and how the Fantastic Four sequel kind of botched that. Speaking of diarrhea clouds, Parallax in Green Lantern was came off just as bad.

This brings me to my next point~ No, Singer is not going to make Apocalypse a smoke monster~ But considering his movies have been more grounded- most characters wear suits (either with tie or with leather) I wonder how exactly he even pulls Apocalypse off. This is a more fantastical character in the X-Universe, and I know those decisions go into what characters they even decide to use in the movies. I suppose it is heartening to know Singer is considering full-CGI characters, This will be a big shift for him, so I hope he can pull it off.

Lastly, Days of Future Past, as a story, is more strictly about the worst-case scenario from mutant persecution. Apocalypse’s ‘survival of the fittest’ m.o. is a whole other set of themes that shouldn’t be shoved in here to clash with that. That’s enough material to stand on a movie of its own. Think about how X3 failed to juggle both the Phoenix and the Cure storylines (and everything else going on), instead of focusing on just one major plot.

Between the assassination attempt on the President, Bolivar Trask, Henry Gyrich and the Sentinel program, mutant slave camps, and establishing the worlds and rules of friggin time travel, there will be more than enough going on in the new movie. Don’t make the mistake of crowding things again just because fans want Apocalypse, who doesn’t really factor into this plotline as much as they remember anyway. I mean, they could go “Age of Apocalypse”, which is basically a reverse scenario take on Days of Future Past (instead of mutants hunted to extinction, what if they became the dominant race after all?) But again, that goes back to what I’m talking about in the first place: It’s too much, too soon.
Pace yourselves.

no he shouldn't be in it but if anyone at fox has got something that resembles a brain in their head they should do what marvel studios did with the avengers & put in a thanos mid credit scene.

x-men days of future past mid credit scene apocalypse.

Yes, yes he should.

What is Megatron without Starscream?
What is Apocalypse without Mr Sinister?

There's no reason why Apocalypse can't be in Days of Future Past, especially if he is in the alternate future leading the mutant uprising - but he should NOT be the main focus.

AoA started as a "what-if" to Xavier's death. Magneto founds the X-Men, and Scarlet Witch is killed in Apocalypse's first attack.

I think Days of Future Past is going to mash together several alternate continuities, and there really isn't anything wrong with that. How many chances will they have to explore such settings?

I want my favorite X-villain before I see Apocalypse. And why can't Sinister make an appearance as a deep cover operative trying to push Magneto to assassinate the president and start the chain reaction?

@ tainted87

i would like to see mr sinister before apocalypse but you do realize that apocalypse appeared in the comics before mr.sinister & they had nothing to do with each other until much later on.

apocalypse x-factor 6(1986)
mr.sinister uncanny x-men 221(1987)

Yes indeed. Although Sinister didn't actually appear, it was his Marauders who pretty much wiped out the Morlocks during the "Mutant Massacre" crossover through 86 and 87.

But who cares? Sinister is the one who plays both sides of the fence, while Apocalypse is nowhere near as manipulative, and has a pretty clear-cut agenda.

Sinister's origin story is plenty awesome. It's very rare to find, but featured in The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix.
Scott and Jean time-warp to the 19th century to stop Apocalypse from creating a virus that wipes out all of humanity. Their self-fulfilling prophecy causes Dr Nathaniel Essex to mutate a virus to specifically attack Apocalypse and cause him to retreat back into his hibernation chamber. Sinister, having seen the potential of Scott and Jean's mutant abilities, believes it would be ignorant and wasteful to wipe out all of humanity. This is all, of course, after Apocalypse has subjected Essex to a series of transformative experiments which render his body impervious to harm. He's something of a backstabber.

As long as at some point an X-Force Movie comes out.
The team need sto be Wolverine, X-23, Psyclocke, Domino, Archangel and Deadpool.

They do need a decent baddie to justify all those heroes.

Im thinking a couple of mystery cameos in the shadows throughout the movie then a big reveal post credits for X-men :AoA as the next movie.

Need apocalypse to get archangle. ... i want AP and Sinister badly but not at the expense of Days correcting or hell ESTABLOSHING some sort of continuity. Do that then bring on the other storys. There are SO many.
RobGrizzly - 2/17/2013, 10:46 PM
I think Mr. Sinister first is an excellent route to go.

Redhood

Everyone knows that Cable's X-Force is one and true X-Force.
CorndogBurglar - 2/18/2013, 9:09 AM
And no, Apocalypse should not be in this.

If you are going to make a movie with Apocalypse, then you either bring him in the way he was brought in in the comics, or you create a completely new story for him to appear in.

Something you do NOT do is shoe-horn him into one of the most popular X-Men stories ever told, knowing full well that he had nothing to do with that story.
LEEE777 - 2/18/2013, 10:09 AM
Your damn right @ CORN!

That is the REAL X-Force!!!

Talking CABLE... this movie could butt [frick] all the histories up and get CABLE in it! :p

Yeah its Fox so will never happen, they'll just [frick] it all up even more...
