'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D' has hinted around that Coulson isn't what he seems. He feels different. He's having nightmares. He's not being himself. Obviously something is up and I think I know what.

After the battle of New York, Coulson died and Nick Fury gave an order to bring him back. Using a Life Model Decoy, Shield brought back Agent Coulson. To help him accept life they kept him from the knowledge of what he truly is.

Through out the series (possibly just the first 2 season) Coulson will slowly start to realize what he is. He already questions himself and his suspicions will continue to grow in future episodes. Once he finds out what he truly is I imagine 1 of 2 things will happen.

Option #1

Coulson discovers his true nature. He accepts it and joins the Avengers as the android "Vision".

This would make sense for a few reasons. Coulson was always a well received character. If Marvel chose to turn him into Vision they would be able to insert him back into the movies and not have The Avengers question why Coulson is suddenly alive. Also with Scarlet Witch appears in Avengers: AOU Vision could be a possibility.

Then there's.....

Option #2
This is my personal favorite. Coulson will discover his true nature and be disgusted by it. He will begin to hate Shield for turning him into a monster and playing "god". He will eventually turn against Shield and become...ULTRON!

This would make sense for a couple of reasons as well. Again, Marvel would be able to insert Coulson back into the movies in "Age Of Ultron". Also, taking a character The Avengers cared for and turning him against them would add an extra layer of drama to the mix. The heroes could be hesitant to fight Ultron since he was basically one of their allies.

There you have it. My theories on what will happen with Agent Coulson and how it could affect the MCU in the future. Let me know what you think will happen with Coulson.

@NPaMusic I don't think it's any more of a stretch than the "Jarvis will evolve into Ultron" theory that has been floating around for a while.

Coulson has clearly shown a dislike for certain choices Shield has made, like not informing him that 2 members of his team were going on a suicide mission. He also seems highly frustrated with the fact that he hasn't been given all the info about his death and revival. So it's not a huge stretch to assume that he'd disagree with Shield when it comes to reviving the dead as robots.

It also seems plausible to me that a person could eventually snap after finding out they're essentially a robot and everybody was hiding it from them. I'm not saying he'll become Ultron in an instant. It would slowly happen after he finds out what he really is. He'd slowly transition from just resenting Shield for turning him into a robot to being angry and feeling hatred toward Shield for it (kinda like how Ultron grew to hate Hank Pym).

#2 Seems like a bit of a cop out, too easy to go that route.

My guess is he's the prototype for Ultron. Shield is probably seeing how effective AI's can be against super powered threats and are gathering data. Then he probably gets upgraded into Vision against his will by Ultron to fight against the Avengers.

Yeah, The chances of Coulson being an LMD or becoming either Vision or Ultron depend on whether or not he shows up in CA:TWS which is suppose to tie in directly to AOU.

Coulson being a huge plot point in AOU while never showing up in any of the Phase 2 films would confuse the hell out of audiences.

@fangz

I think Ultron will certainly have a 'conciousness' of some sort - or at the very least him won't be an robot devoid of emotion. He is pretty screwed up.

I get what you're saying though. Even though he isn't Hal or the Terminator he isn't Robocop either. But for me, giving a link to a human conciousness isn't too much of an issue if it gives Ultron a more three dimensional character.

For me some of the MCU villains have been a little bit flat with only Loki being the most fully formed antagonist of the franchise. Hopefully Ultron will break this rut.

I actually hope in A:AoU there is a nod to the Crimson Cowl and that there is a MOE element going on. That could tie into the 'Coulson as Ultron' theory. As a high level SHIELD agent he could gain access to a multiude of villains that are in their custody and form his own 'dark avengers'. Blonsky, Sterns and perhaps Zola are in their custody somewhere. And Hammer is also tucked away in prison. Kurse and Red Skull and in the cosmos somewhere so they may return. And finally whoever survives out of CA:TWS may play a part too.

There is no way Coulson is a robot: He bleeds, he sweats, he is tired when he does some exercises, he has nightmares, and feelings.
MoonDoggyX - 11/23/2013, 6:31 AM
Coulsen as Ultron is a horrible idea. Coulsen is a good, I dare say great man. Agenst of Shield has shown that evem more than that they've implied that there is something up with his "resurrection". He would he have an existential crisis if he finds out he's a LMD or android? Yes, I agree that he would. Now would he then decide to try to destroy everything that he fought and stood for? Hell no! Here's what I think will happen...

Jarvis becomes Ultron. He will not just evolve. He will be stolen and shield will attempt to weaponize him an relabel the project "ultron". For the simple reason that "Tony Stark's stolen a.i. Jatvis" is too long of a name. The plan is that ultron is meant to be shield's ultimate "big brother" over the world. Like skynet, when activated Ultron will not only gain access not only to shield's database, but every secured database on the planet. Ultron will see everyone's dirty littke secrets and judge humanity as the biggest threat to the itself. Now we get into "I robot" territory. Instead of trying to destroy us, ultron tries to "save" us from ourselves. He locks down all computer controled military hardware and uses his Jarvis programming to build and army to "protect" us from ourselves.

Agent coulson, that ultron knows all about due to his unlimited access to shield databases, is temporarily corrupted or controlled and possibly upgraded by ultron and thus exposed as an android. Eventually, the "human" side of coulsen fights the control and helps the avengers stop ultron as the Vision...
MoonDoggyX - 11/23/2013, 6:58 AM
Or... In Iron Man 3, there was a team cleaning up the debris at Stark's house after the helicopter attack. The house was destroyed down to the hall of armors, so that includes tony's lab. What if that "clean up" crew was a bunch of shield shadow agents sent to collect all of iron man's plans, notes and research including a copy of jarvis. Now, the previews for Cap:TWS show that shield will amass a giant military force to police. Obviously, cap and company will defeat the force comprised of multiple helicarriers. At the end of the movie, it is shown that shield also shield created an army of iron men. Though not ready during Cap 2, project "ultron" is activate through some kind of dead man protocol. The last scene of cap 2 is thousands of iron men flying out of a secret shield hall of armors. Avengers, age of ultron opens with the world already being conquered by ultron. Causing the avengers to come to gether again as the resistance... Including iron man suiting up again.

Didn't Whedon say Coulson isn't in AoU?

DECOYYYYYY
Lhornbk - 11/23/2013, 8:15 AM
Hmmmmm........yeaah, this is one of the dumbest theories ever.

This assumes he is a LMD, which I don't agree with. You don't even give any reasons why you think that, you just assume it's true. And the idea that Coulson would become Ultron is just beyond stupid. Ultron is AI, he has his own personality that becomes corrupted. Changing who creates him is one thing, but I don't see Marvel changing his origin to the point that a person basically becomes Ultron. Plus, that would mean at some point this body would be destroyed too and his memories would have to be transferred into a metal body. Why wouldn't they just give him another human body instead? Also, that would basically end AoS after 2 seasons, and while that might happen (assuming they get a second season), I don't think Marvel or Whedon would deliberately plan it that way (and no, I don't see AoS going on without Coulson. He is too important to the show.)
Lhornbk - 11/23/2013, 8:20 AM
Plus, I doubt they would hire Spader to be Ultron if Coulson was Ultron. They would use Gregg instead. (The same goes for the Jarvis idea. They would just use the Jarvis voice actor.)
HeisenbergSaysRelax - 11/23/2013, 9:56 AM
@Lhornbk There's obviously something going on with Coulson. I assume he could be an LMD, key word there is "I". These are my predictions. I'm assuming while he was dead they transferred his consciousness into a computer program that simulated Tahiti and they transferred him to his LMD when they got the chance. I understand that there isn't a ton of information to support that but I feel like there is enough to make a reasonable assumption. First off LMDs were mentioned in The Avengers, this could just be Tony making a joke or it could be because he was consulted by Shield about the LMD program. Coulson also stated in an episode of AOS that the iron levels in his blood were a bit high, this could be a nod to being an LMD as well.

They hire James Spader as a decoy. He is said to be playing Ultron (which is a hueg thing to announce when the movie is still a while off) until the movie comes out and we realize that isn't the case. Spader is playing someone else entirely.

And the "That would change the character too much" argument doesn't really mean much. They completely changed The Mandarin's entire story in IM3. Sure, there's rumors that the "secret project" Kingsley is working on will rectify that, but I'm pretty sure it's just a one-shot.

Turning Coulson into Ultron wouldn't be anymore of a change to Ultron's backstory than it is to turn Mandarin into an exploding guy who doesn't like Tony Stark. Marvel has shown they are willing to alter backstories.
GageHarts - 11/23/2013, 11:40 AM
James Spader..?
sikwon - 11/23/2013, 12:22 PM
The theory is awesome. Do I think that's what will happen? No. Do I think that what ever is going on with Colson will have an impact on AoU, absolutely. I would NOT be surprised at all if colsons team plays a very small role in the Avengers.
sikwon - 11/23/2013, 12:24 PM
Agent Hand made an interesting comment when she was running the mission with Colsons team. She said they didnt plan an extraction precisely because it was Colsons team. The implication being that Shield (at its highest levels) trusts Colsons judgment and training methods.
sikwon - 11/23/2013, 12:27 PM
If you think about the missions they are given, what they are investigating, the resources available and colsons direct link to Fury, they are a high level team. As the series progresses and the characters continue their development arc we will see more tie ins to events in the larger MCU.
sikwon - 11/23/2013, 12:28 PM
That brings me back to your Ultron theory,I think after Cap 2 the effects will be felt in AoS and in SMALL ways some events on the show will be pertinent to AoU.

Or want them all dead... XD

I vote for the clone theory, a syntetic body with a spirit loaded digitaly, could be so cruel ...
diabolik - 11/24/2013, 3:49 AM
Ultron is already being played By Spader, so it's not going to happen, but I always wanted to see him becoming the Vision, most fans do I think. And Elizabeth Olson? who wouldn't want to be the Vision at this point?
HeisenbergSaysRelax - 11/24/2013, 11:40 AM
Just because James Spader was announced as playing Ultron doesn't mean he is actually playing Ultron. We were told Ben Kingsley was playing The Mandarin. He wasn't. It's called bait and switch. Honestly, why would they announce the voice of their primary villain a full year and a half before the movie comes out? Are we seriously just assuming that Marvel is being truthful? Things aren't always what they seem when it comes to these movies and you'd think people would understand that by now.

I assume you all believe Robert Redford is only playing "Alexander Pierce" and isn't secretly The Red Skull in disguise, right?
