An Open Letter To Josh Trank

After seeing Fant4stic and seeing what Josh Trank has to say, I have a few choice words for Hollywood's latest black sheep.

Hey Josh,

Let me start this off by telling you, I'm not your friend (despite what the casual language may imply). I'm here to break you, to take this empire of bullshit you've created and tear it down. Why? Because I don't like you. I don't like how you look like a hipster who's trying too had, I hate that you make one lazy ass movie and Hollywood thinks your the next Steven Spielberg.

You had it made man, a comic book property like Fantastic Four! A Star Wars movie! I mean c'mon man, you're getting some good gigs here. Or, you HAD good gigs.

I don't know if the rumors of your drug abuse, drinking, and general asshat nature is true; but I'm starting to think it is. Your latest film is an unmitigated disaster, you clearly failed in your job as a director. Now before I proceed, this is the definition of a Director, in case you forget.

Director
A person who supervises the actors, camera crew, and other staff for a movie, play, television program, or similar production.

So yeah Josh, you're kind of the big boss. Things like problems with the script or editing are YOUR responsibility. Now I get what you're saying that Fox intervened on your movie and mucked it up, but it's your job to keep a film on track. You're there to have a creative vision for that film and execute on it. Failiure to do so can (maybe) be blamed on others but at the end of the day, the cast isn't running the show. The writer isn't running the show. You are.

Truth be told, your career is done. Had you admitted fault for what you did, I think studios would give you a chance. No studio is going to hire you now after you threw Fox under the bus for what was essentially a failiure on your part to course correct the film.

I mean, there's reports that you were indecisive, unable to communicate what are considered modest demands. Fox has acknowledged you were difficult to deal with; and now with the film bombing you're saying it's their fault. If it was 'their' fault, why not quit? Why not just leave the project? Sounds like you weren't even there most of the time Simon Kingberg was pulling Director duties for you.

So what am I getting at here? Grow a pair. Own up to the fact that people saw potential in you that just wasn't there. Stop throwing others under the bus for what is your inability to properly direct a film. I mean, if I fail in my day job I don't blame my boss. If an article on ComicBookMovie doesn't do well I don't blame the editors. You admit fault and grow, and while it may sounds like I don't like you, I'm sure you're a decent(?) human being, so for your benefit I hope you learn from all of this and can parlay it all into your next endevour, whether that be flipping burgers at Mcdonalds or directing indie flicks.

Yes, that is the definition of a director. But what you e witnessed in this movie is the true nature of Hollywood, in that unless you are a BIG TIME director, you have very little authority in the way of basically being the school hall monitor. Producers and companies ruin movies, and while I don't know exactly what happened in this case or the true nature of Tranks character, I can bet it had a lot to do with producers and the such.

Lol. Fox tried to course correct. They more like course wronged the movie by not letting the guy be a director. But hey, that is what happens when a studio tries to do everyone jobs that they hired to do instead of letting the pros do on what they agreed on.

Trank should not have tweeted that statement but man Fox is the big bad wolf for this movies failure.

Is this the first time a director did something like this? I've seen it after a movie came out, but never right before.

You're forgetting the fact that in big budget movies, it's the STUDIO people that has the final word on the cut of a movie, not the DIRECTOR. The pacing in this movie feels weird, it's like if parts were missing or misplaced, so I'd say it's not entirely his fault.

I don't know the sources of the author, and if there are any, but according to Collider, one of their sources reported what supposedly happened, then they confirmed with a second source that worked in the movie and they were told the same thing, after that they checked with people who worked with Fox in previous movies to see if it sounded like it was true and they were told "you have no idea...", so...in their own words, Fox went way over the line with this.

These people said that Josh was pretty much cut from the movie. They agreed on something, Fox changed their mind, cut this and that, didn't let the guy be involved in the editing process and made a mess of it.

It was a mistake for him to tweet that but, it's easy to point fingers when you are not in that chair.
