According to MovieWeb The Walking Dead producers are looking to cast Philip Blake, aka The Governor. Fans have long been asking when the villainous character will make his debut on the show and now it looks like we have our answer, as the reports states he will debut in the third season. Producers are looking at John Hawkes for the role, but actor Tom Savini has been actively campaigning for the role.

From MobieWeb:

While Philip Blake, aka The Governor, is a major player in The Walking Dead comic book series, fans will have to wait until The Walking Dead Season 3 to see him take shape as a living human being. We recently caught up with Sex Machine Tom Savini, who revealed some interesting information about the casting of this important, though yet unseen, character.

But, AMC is going after a name, and that name is John Hawkes, seen in Deadwood and Winter's Bone.

As stated above Savini has been actively perusing the role by courting his long time friend and The Walking Dead producer Greg Nicotero. Said Savini,"When am I going to be on The Walking Dead? I should be the governor on that damn thing! Listen, I have been campaigning to be the governor on that damn thing with Greg Nicotero for over a year. Everytime I see the graphic novel, and I see a picture of The Governor, who looks just like me, I send Greg a picture. I just won't give up. Last time I talked to him about it, when I was in Los Angeles, he said they were going after a name for that part. I said, 'Who?' He said John Hawkes." Sivini went on to say that he has heard that The Governor was actually based on him saying, "I've never heard it confirmed that it was based on me. I wish the writers and the producers would remember that if I was. Because I'm available, and I want to do it. Tell everyone to vote: Tom Savini for Governor on The Walking Dead!" There has been no word on if the producers are actually considering Sivini, but keep checking CBM for all the latest news on The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead returns February 12, 2012 on AMC.

That's cool, I haven't read the comics, nor do I want to because it'd probably ruin the show for me, but hell yeah, bring on some more characters and kill some of the others off!

SAVINI! YES! Why did I not even think of Savini for the role?!
LucasMend - 1/27/2012, 6:44 PM
Tom Savini would be great!
marvel72 - 1/27/2012, 6:44 PM

DarthTesla - 1/27/2012, 7:06 PM
THERE IS ONLY TOM SAVINI!!!!

How can they seriously even consider anyone else?
Bandrews1 - 1/27/2012, 7:07 PM
Tom Savini is an interesting choice.
RavenHomicide - 1/27/2012, 7:10 PM
Savini or they have no idea how to cast.
ElBicho - 1/27/2012, 7:10 PM
Tom M'fing Savini!
ecksmanfan - 1/27/2012, 7:12 PM
I;m cool with either one of them, but I'd prefer John Hawkes I think.
soberchimera - 1/27/2012, 7:14 PM
I'd go for the Oscar nominee.

I love me some Tom Savini, but John Hawkes is good in everything I've seen him in. It would be quite a departure from Kenny Powers' brother.
MatchesMalone1989 - 1/27/2012, 9:21 PM
Bring On The Governor!!!!!
spectrecls07 - 1/27/2012, 10:06 PM
anyone who says John Hawkes obviously hasnt read the new novel.

Savini does his best work behind the camera's doing makeup. Savini, in my opinion, isn't even that good of an actor, he has just had some bad ass minor rolls with cool one liners and things like that. Also you want someone who can be very dark and sinister (spoiler, just think of what he did with Michone)

I actually thought they where going to work it so that Michael Rooker's character Merle Dixon would become the governor. (Spoiler the rest of the way) Seeing as Merle lost his hand, and in the comics Rick looses his. I thought it would be a funny tip of the hat to that part of the comics, seeing as i dont think in the show they will have rick lose his hand. For 3 reasons i think this, 1. i think some of the people who just watch the show and are not use to things like this happening to the lead characters ( we forget that as comic book and cult movie fans, this type of thing is not the norm for protagonists) would be pissed, 2 i dont think the show would want to have to spend money on having to computer generate his hand out of the show every week with a green glove. and 3, having to always worry about acting around this wound, i.e. is he running right, is he gesturing right and such

Gotta disagree with you both, Danny and BatSlam. While it's true Savini's mostly known for his FX work and his role as Sex Machine in From Dusk Till Dawn, he's appeared in numerous stage productions of Shakespeare and anyone who's seen George Romero's Knightriders knows Savini can pull of a dramatic role like nobody's business. Give the guy a role and he'll bring all he can to it; it's just a shame that the only roles being offered to him are cheap direct-to-video turds, but even then he's typically the best thing about those movies. Dude can act. Do your homework. ;)

All that said, I'd love to see Savini appear in the show. If not as the Governor, which he seems a perfect fit for, then at least as a regular in another role.
samster10001 - 1/28/2012, 12:23 AM
I vote for Hawkes but whats interesting here is that both guys actually appeared in the same movie once. Anyone wanna guess what movie that was?
Jerec350 - 1/28/2012, 5:17 AM
@samster10001 - From Dusk til Dawn.

I vote for Savini as The Governor!
AlexDeLarge87 - 1/28/2012, 5:42 AM
Hawkes is a great actor but yes i think Savini fits better.

However if i could choose anyone i want. I would choose Elias Koteas or Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
samster10001 - 1/28/2012, 6:40 AM
@jerec350- two points for you
Growler - 1/28/2012, 8:10 AM
Savini or Danny Trejo. Others need not apply.
DarthTesla - 1/28/2012, 9:56 AM
Wow, why does everyone have to shit on Tom Savini? He would obviously be perfect for The Governor.

I love John Hawkes but he is NOT imposing or even scary. Sure he's good at playing kinda creepy, but Tom Savini would kill the role.
dezdigi - 1/28/2012, 10:34 AM
John Hawkes can play an intimidating character. Watch Winter's Bone.
He would be an awesome addition to the Walking Dead.
jazzman - 1/28/2012, 10:49 AM
bring on Tom Savini

Banner123 - 1/28/2012, 2:34 PM
If you have read Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor, then you would know the true backstory of The Governor. No way I would spoil anything, but based on that story, Hawkes would be perfect. If you base it on the comics, the I always pictured Danny Trejo as the perfect Governor.
Capps14e - 1/30/2012, 11:30 AM
Tom Savini all the way! Sex machine!
bencardenas - 2/1/2012, 2:41 PM
I'm sorry, but Danny Trejo is the only person I can picture for this role.
bencardenas - 2/1/2012, 2:43 PM
Orrr if I MUST have a second choice, Ian McShane from Deadwood
