BOX OFFICE: GODZILLA Stomps On CAPTAIN AMERICA For Largest Opening Day; May Hit $100M

After taking $38.5 million on Friday, Godzilla has managed to take the title from Captain America: The Winter Soldier to have 2014's highest opening day. It also looks set to have the highest opening weekend with analysts now predicting a haul of $98+ million!

$65 million. That's what it was initially believed Godzilla would open with in North America. Well, if you needed any further proof of how unreliable tracking can be and how unpredictable moviegoers are, look no further than what's happening this weekend! After earning a whopping $38.5 million on Friday, Gareth Edwards' remake scored the highest opening day of 2014, and it now looks likely to beat both Captain America: The Winter Soldier's three-day debut of $95 million and The Amazing Spider-Man 2's $91.6 million. With a B+ CinemaScore, business on IMAX screens is also particularly good, and a total of $98 - 100 million by close of business on Sunday is now extremely likely. Business overseas is going very well too. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took $4.5 million on Friday for a $16 million weekend. That will give it a total of $171.4 million.

So B+ is a good cinemascore for Godzilla, but badvfor ASM 2 apparently. Hypocrite much?
batman1216 - 5/17/2014, 8:48 AM
I just think superhero movies are cooling a bit in the US.
SauraLilvera - 5/17/2014, 8:50 AM
Cap will still end up with more money after Godzilla drops hard next week. Congrats?
MrNiklander - 5/17/2014, 8:51 AM
No one [frick]s with Godzilla the King Of Monsters not even Marvel
thewonderer - 5/17/2014, 8:51 AM
Don't know how many will agree with me here but I was actually pretty disappointed by this film. I mean I still liked it but it really was a slow burn. Having watched "Monsters", I expected Godzilla to take a backseat in some ways but not to the extent he is in the film. I mean the MUTO is the only creature we see for the first half. Also, the film is full of teases. Showing Godzilla's full form and then cutting away from the battle? I felt offended at that scene. I understand Edwards has a budget and such but the film was so weirdly edited at points.

Now, the biggest problem. The humans. Aaron Taylor Johnson did okay as leading man. Not great, not bad, okay. Okay isn't good enough to focus on for the entire 2/3rds of the film + some of the third. Killing off Cranston was a HUGE mistake this film made. No other human character is even remotely interesting. Ken Watanabe, who I absolutely adore as a performer, literally looks confused and awe struck in every single scene he's in. It really is a shame.

Alas, the fight scenes are incredible. Sad they are only so little of the run time though.

Great news! :)

MrFridayNights - 5/17/2014, 8:52 AM
[frick] yeah!!!!!!! Now that means that Godzilla will have a sequel.
Next weekend X-Men DOFP will open with $125M!!!!!!!!
gambgel - 5/17/2014, 8:52 AM
great numbers, without doubt.

on other hand, XMen will beat both movies, lol
AlexanderLykins - 5/17/2014, 8:53 AM
This is an IMAX 3D type of movie, not surprised.
thewonderer - 5/17/2014, 8:55 AM
Also, the final battle should've have been more fluid. I just wish they let Godzilla fight with the monsters for more than 10 seconds. They kept cutting back and forth with the army. It really took me out of the film. It's strange because I like the dilemma. I like what's going on. I just really disliked how it was put together. I think the film would've benefited from trimming much of
the army sequence and just letting the battle run its course.

May and summer blockbusters should bring in more box office, but I do find this surprising it is that high. Haven't heard the greatest feedback from friends that have seen it and I have a feeling it will lose its legs quickly.
MrRan - 5/17/2014, 8:56 AM
Even the leading man is bland, the movie is great. The screen time of Godzilla is just enough ! It's totally enough. I love it
ReeferInferno - 5/17/2014, 8:57 AM
Everybody now!

whoa123 - 5/17/2014, 8:57 AM
Damn! Very deserving, just watched it on regular yesterday and IMAX today, IMAX is the way to go.
WildCard12 - 5/17/2014, 8:58 AM
No surprise there.

Idiots that complain that you don't see Godzilla much in this film clearly don't know the meaning of the word suspense. This is the first time we see him they won't be doing that for the sequel as he's introduced
souNdwAve89 - 5/17/2014, 9:03 AM
Definitely worth it in IMAX. When I mean IMAX, I mean the real deal. None of that fake AMC IMAX's that so many are around now days.
joeschmow013 - 5/17/2014, 9:04 AM
Great...going to see it in a few hours...can't wait!
Shroombeast - 5/17/2014, 9:04 AM
Godzilla, [frick] yeah!!!
Omarvls - 5/17/2014, 9:05 AM

Here he is again the tortured DC ONLY Fanatic so delusional that he thinks this is bad news for Marvel
What a joke

@ladypartsmonster - right on. i've never cared about monetary weiner-measuring or "critics", myself. loved MoS
grif - 5/17/2014, 9:09 AM
i guess people like a movie without the monster in it.
Vegeta - 5/17/2014, 9:10 AM
It sounds like to me all that 'suspense' didn't have a big enough pay off.
CauseImBatman91939 - 5/17/2014, 9:11 AM
when was ASM2 ranked a B+ because that movie is a C at best
Jollem - 5/17/2014, 9:11 AM
@Omarvls -

1. i like comics and cbms from lots of publishers and production companies

2. i never implied this was "bad for marvel studios"

3. i like waffles
DoubleD - 5/17/2014, 9:11 AM
Good we need a sequel ! Godzilla was good but not great. First Godzilla was shown through the whole movie. Final battle was not that amazing. The human story was boring and it made you not care about the people.

C+/B- in my book
thejfather1 - 5/17/2014, 9:12 AM
I still liked it, but not as much as i wish i did.

Aaron Taylor Johnson was literally made of wood
SauraLilvera - 5/17/2014, 9:12 AM
It's a little pathetic that DC is doing so poorly that the fans have to root for other companies to take down Marvel Studios. Look at all the support being thrown behind X-Men next week, but a successful X movie will only mean that two different companies are making better comic book movies than DC. Add the fact that it will be another successful Marvel property at the end of the day and it really makes me wonder why they're supporting the movie at all.
