Sherlock, the hit BBC One drama produced by Hartswood Films, will return to screens for a Special, followed by a series of three new episodes. The last series saw Sherlock’s life change a lot - he returned from the dead, his best friend John Watson married Mary Morstan and he met his match in Charles Augustus Magnussen. After the briefest of exiles, Sherlock came back only to face one of his biggest mysteries yet. Why is Moriarty’s face being broadcast on every television in the land?

Speaking about the return of the series, co-creator, writer and executive producer Steven Moffat says: “A special, plus a new series of three episodes - it's a record-breaking run! Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect...”

Co-creator, writer and executive producer Mark Gatiss, adds: “Series Four! At last ! It's always special to return to Sherlock but this time it's even more special as we're doing... a Special! Not only THAT, we'll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on - again!"

Sue Vertue, Executive Producer, Hartswood Films says: “It’s taken a little while to get the dates sorted as none of the boys are exactly sitting back twiddling their thumbs but there was unanimous goodwill to make this work, so we’re thrilled that 221b is going to be inhabited again.”

Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, says: “It’s a very good day in the life of a BBC One Controller when you can announce Sherlock will return for a special plus a new three-part series. Massive thanks to Sue Vertue and Hartswood Films for pulling this off, it's no mean feat pinning down some of this country's most brilliant and in-demand actors and writers."

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama, says: "Steven and Mark are ready to unleash the most shocking and surprising series of Sherlock yet. The only thing to expect is the unexpected..."

Sherlock is written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, and inspired by the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock is produced by Sue Vertue and the executive producers are Beryl Vertue, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat for Hartswood Films, Bethan Jones for BBC Cymru Wales and Rebecca Eaton for Masterpiece.

Shooting on the special will begin in January 2015, with the series shooting later next year.

Commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One and Ben Stephenson Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning.

So, some pretty exciting news here! Looking at what's said above, it seems like a fair assumption that the Sherlock special will air in 2015 and that the new series would follow in early 2016 as the latest run of episodes did. Those of you who watched them will know that there was a very surprising return at the end of season three that is sure to play a massive role in these new episodes as the BBC continues the story of their modern take on Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Are you guys looking forward to Sherlock's return? Sound off with your thoughts below!

I PREFER ELEMENTARY (not really).

The last season was disappointing, imo.
Klone - 7/2/2014, 7:55 AM
The only massive disappointed I had with Series 3 was the wasted potential of Moran. He's a sharpshooter, second most deadly man in London (apparently) and Moriarty's subordinate... WHY in the hell would you make him a politician without any dialogue or motivation!?!?!

Other than that I really liked Series Three. I think the whole Moriarty thing will be handled much more smartly than a miraculous return from the dead so he can fight Sherlock again. Didn't the books imply Moriarty belonged to group or agency and that he had a brother? Hmmm.

One of my top 5 shows on television! Cant wait for season 4!
Indoorsman - 7/2/2014, 8:07 AM
I'm with you Greengo. First two seasons are great. 3rd was a mess. Here's hoping for a turnaround.
TheAmbassador - 7/2/2014, 8:12 AM

Cool beans. Still bummed we'd have to wait another year+ for that though

Season 3 did indeed have a drop in quality, but I'm still very much looking forward to it.
Pilkington - 7/2/2014, 8:26 AM
I have to wait till 2015?

Darlene1974 - 7/2/2014, 8:27 AM
they should do a 10episode thing...
why only do 3 a year...
so annoying
DocDangerous - 7/2/2014, 8:28 AM
Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhh
Klone - 7/2/2014, 8:32 AM
@Darlene

Because when it comes to the television industry, the UK has far less money and each episode is essentially the length of a film.
EzioKenway1225 - 7/2/2014, 8:40 AM
series 3 was imo the weakest one so far but i still quite enjoyed it, was more about the relationships and less about the cases
SauronsBANE - 7/2/2014, 8:56 AM
I know a ton of people thought series 3 was the weakest so far, but I thought it was fantastic. They had to juggle the enormous expectations after bringing Sherlock back from the dead, and I thought they handled that smartly by not giving a definitive answer. And rather than focusing on the mysteries, they focused on the characters, and what Sherlock's return really meant to everyone else.

I can totally see why that's not everyone's cup of tea, but I loved it. I know it got a little "meta" and "fan-servicey", but Sherlock HAS become an international phenomenon, after all. It doesn't have series' anymore...it's become an event. It sucks that it takes so long to arrive, and then when it does it's over in 3 weeks, but I seriously can't wait! Easily one of the best shows on TV right now.

"Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect...”

Drekk... Are they waking up naked in bed together, with white stains on the sheet?!? I mean we're all waiting for something like that, since the series begun, but noone would really be expecting it. ^^
SupermanFan - 7/2/2014, 9:05 AM
I PREFER ELEMENTARY !!!
BlindJustice - 7/2/2014, 9:06 AM
It will be coming in...

NEVEREMBER!
BackwardGalaxy - 7/2/2014, 9:09 AM
I really did not enjoy Season 3 much at all, but Seasons 1 and 2 were pretty awesome. I'm always up for more Sherlock.
BlindJustice - 7/2/2014, 9:10 AM
J/K

Great news, but I don't care for Cumberbatch as Strange. He looks weird with facial hair.
MrAmeriBrit - 7/2/2014, 9:15 AM
They already did all the sherlock books what are they gonna do next
IamBatman - 7/2/2014, 9:27 AM
NO DOCTOR STRANGE! He sucks at acting. Terrible
Ranger14 - 7/2/2014, 9:31 AM
Not sure how anyone can watch Sherlock and say that Cumberbatch sucks at acting. The guy is brilliant in the role.
ComicsBornAndBred - 7/2/2014, 9:31 AM
Boss!!! Season 3 was the weakest imo season so I hope they improve with the next one
sKeemAn - 7/2/2014, 9:39 AM
I really like this show. Its strange that every episode is like its own movie.
HecticHector - 7/2/2014, 10:05 AM
The only bad aspect of this news is that we'll only be able see the new series an year and a half from now. That's A LOT to wait.

Glad there'll be more episodes though.
YoungThanos - 7/2/2014, 10:14 AM
Caught half of the first episode of season 3 on Netflix then forgot about it.

It clearly doesn't have the same charm as the first season but I'll eventually watch the rest in hopes that it picks up.
Dangermouse78 - 7/2/2014, 10:20 AM
In Elementary you can tell within 5 minutes who the bad guy is and is essentially a bad guy of the week type show. Sherlock on the other hand is TV at its best - surprising, funny, well acted, deep characters and clever story arcs.

I do however like both versions of the Sherlock characters and Johny Lee Miller does well with what he's given.
Dunejedi - 7/2/2014, 10:22 AM
Jesus, that's a long wait.
MarkV - 7/2/2014, 10:32 AM
Not a fan of season 3. Hopefully this will be a return to the perfection that was season 2.
EzioKenway1225 - 7/2/2014, 11:01 AM
SauronsBane1-yeah even though i do think series 3 is the weakest,it still is very good,it, as u said, focuses more on the characters then the cases,i think Moffat and Gatiss said it best " it is not a detective show,it is a show about a detective",they really experimented with the wedding episode and i think it paid off,i liked Magnussen as the villain, much different from Moriarty ( who i love) Moriarty is more wild ,unpredictable and fun while Magnussen is more cold, methodical and calculating and THAT CLIFFHANGER!!
SauronsBANE - 7/2/2014, 11:29 AM
@EzioKenway1225, I agree. I'd go so far to say that the wedding episode was probably my favorite of the entire 3rd series. I agree with Moffat and Gatiss' statement there, but I don't blame people for disliking it because the first 2 series really did play up the mystery aspect of the show, only to suddenly drop the focus on mysteries in series 3.

Magnussen was incredibly menacing as a villain, but I kind of wish he'd been more of a factor. He was teased throughout the entire series 3, and was finally introduced in the 3rd episode...and now he's obviously not going have any impact anymore. I was kind of hoping they were setting him up to be the next Moriarty, but I can't argue with that cliffhanger haha. I'm really excited to see where they take this next!
thejfather1 - 7/2/2014, 11:35 AM
Episode 3 of season 3 was the only good one imo, the other 2 were lackluster

Season 2 episode 3 is still the best one, for me at least
gurugeorge - 7/2/2014, 11:47 AM
Well, now that Mark Gatiss is the head of the Iron Bank of Braavos, they should have no trouble financing it :)
CrimsonFlash - 7/2/2014, 12:04 PM
sooo 2016 realease=( need it now!
Holmes - 7/2/2014, 3:26 PM
