Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has been released in both North America and a handful of other international locations today (though it doesn't hit many of the latter until the World Cup concludes later this month), and it kicked off its run with late Thursday evening and midnight showings domestically last night. There, the Matt Reeves helmed sequel earned an impressive $4.1 million and prerelease tracking indicated that the critically acclaimed sequel could earn upwards of $60 million this weekend. Of course, tracking has been very hit and miss this year, so Fox are estimating a slightly more conservative $55 million debut. With so many great reviews and positive word of mouth, it could easily pass that though. In 2011, Rise of the Planet of the Apes opened with $54 million, and the sequel - which cost roughly $170 million to make - has ever chance of topping the $481.8 million at the worldwide box office grossed by the first instlment.

I hear this film is pretty good. Hope the ball keeps rolling in terms of cash flow.
Lozzy - 7/11/2014, 7:10 AM

Just a grunt in a bind in his homeland
Taking orders from a very very bad man
Just yer average Dieter, Helmut, or a Bertrand
I can waste him 'cause I know I never never shook his hand

Killed by a hero, what are we supposed to do?

just a loser with a girlfriend getting fat and
participation in a very very bad plan
In a nation where the bastards are the unplanned
we can waste it cuz it's such a teeny tiny hand

Killed by procedure, what are we supposed to do

(And Cornelius says)
Ape shall never kill ape
I say wouldn't that be great?
But some apes, they just gotta go
We kill the ones that we don't know

Not a nobody, an actual American
beaten silly by another Jody Foster fan
Spend a fortune to debate the moral conflict and
He's protected through it's obvious he killed a man

Killed by the system, what are we supposed to do?

Rise was the best movie of 2011 hands down.

I'll be seeing Dawn tomorrow. Cannot wait.
Gamera623 - 7/11/2014, 7:27 AM
OK maybe not hands down.

X-Men First Class and Captain America came out in 2011 so competition was there....but Rise of the PotA was just phenominal and was my #1.
MrNiklander - 7/11/2014, 7:28 AM
I cant wait for this movie
TheAbaryMan369 - 7/11/2014, 7:29 AM

Just saw it last night. Great film and feels much longer than 2 hours and 10 minutes buy in the best way.

You just hate Koba in it............ Great performances by both!!!!
Nomis - 7/11/2014, 7:42 AM
Saw it last night! Excellent film! One of the few sequels that lived up to the original!

What they set up for the next is going to be Explosive!

And I never thought I'd say this....but Koba may have stole the movie from Cesar as the most memorable character!
MightyZeus - 7/11/2014, 7:42 AM
This film is actually getting great reviews.

This film actually deserves a lot more money, more money than Age of Extinction.
CaptainAmerica31 - 7/11/2014, 7:46 AM
KOBA stole from Cesar? Nahhh I heard Caesar is one of the best characters in a movie ever. But I gotta see it first. Can't [frick]ing wait!
MrCBM56 - 7/11/2014, 7:50 AM
Seeing it tomorrow at Dawn.
NovaCorpsFan - 7/11/2014, 7:51 AM
Gotta wait a week. Glad to hear it's good!

Also, a friend of mine last week said these movies were a bastardisation of the originals and desecrate them on every ground possible. I don't like him too much anymore.
Snotzo - 7/11/2014, 7:52 AM
Great movie with great acting, direction, script and has relevant commentary and parallels with real life = Doomed to make less money than Transformers which has explosions.
MrCBM56 - 7/11/2014, 7:55 AM
@NovaCorpsFan I think these films are a prequel-reboot. So I guess it's going to be entirely open ended whether they're in the same universe or not.
blackandyellow - 7/11/2014, 7:57 AM
I think I'll go see Jersey Boys for the 8th time instead.

@ CaptainAmerica31 - When you see the movie and all that koba does, you may be ready to retract that statement!
DaVinci31 - 7/11/2014, 8:01 AM
"And I never thought I'd say this....but Koba may have stole the movie from Cesar as the most memorable character!"

Can't wait!

BaneSmash - 7/11/2014, 8:01 AM
B&Y

Jersey boys was really good.
BaneSmash - 7/11/2014, 8:02 AM
Koba was an asshole...........
NovaCorpsFan - 7/11/2014, 8:03 AM
@MrCBM

Yeah, that's essentially what they are. I mean, they've already made Conquest and Battle moot as well as Escape, but they referenced the Icarus leaving Earth in Rise.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 7/11/2014, 8:24 AM
Can't fn wait. My most anticipated film of the year.
McGee - 7/11/2014, 8:24 AM
Man Josh...Power User SpudzMcKenzie05 would have allowed me to post that full on graphically hardcore pic of a man having mouth sex with a chimp in a blonde wig.
MrCBM56 - 7/11/2014, 8:26 AM
^ I've seen that pic. Very arousing, indeed.
POTUS - 7/11/2014, 8:41 AM
I'm POTUS

I don't see this film doing as well as the first, at least not in the USA. There's little in the way of family or female appeal in it, from what the trailers show. I'll be disappointed, of course, as I'm in the middle of conducting my own little invasion (heh heh, that's what we call it, cuz they're kids, and they're tiny) and the more distracted you are the better it will go. Stoopid monkeys.

I'm POTUS
Nomis - 7/11/2014, 8:45 AM
@ BaneSmash - True. But an unforgettable one!

Think of the best villains you loe to hate in a great movie (Vader in 'Empire', Alan Rickman in 'Die Hard', Tyler Durden in 'Fight Club', the Joker in any Batman movie) and this is how Koba is shown in the movie.
Holmes - 7/11/2014, 8:47 AM
not counting Godzilla (bc that movie was perfect to me) Dawn was is the Best movie of the year so far hands down. I cant think of anything better (besides godzilla)
whoa123 - 7/11/2014, 8:48 AM
LOVED THIS FILM! ALL HAIL CAESAR!!!
DeusExSponge - 7/11/2014, 8:49 AM
C'mon domestic audience, don't fail me now! If you do, then I'll have to hit you again while praising the oversea audience!
Holmes - 7/11/2014, 8:51 AM
GO SEE THIS AND ENJOY!!!!
PanochaLibre - 7/11/2014, 8:57 AM
This movie was biting, overwrought and pointless. I loved the first one, it's one of my all time faves. This was disappointing. People laughed during scenes that weren't meant to be funny, that was the best part!
