$4.6 million. Not bad, eh? Well, it's nowhere near Guardians of the Galaxy's $11.2 million from last week, but this is still a strong start for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and not too different to Maleficent (which earned $4 million when it opened before grossing $69.4 million during its opening weekend). However, analysts believe that the movie will debut with $40 - $45 million, while Paramount believe it could be closer to $50 million. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy is going to prove itself to be some serious competition as it enters its second week of release, and there's every chance that it WILL be #1 again for the three day period. For now though, we're going to have to wait and see, so stay tuned for updates! It's going to be a close one. What will you guys be watching this weekend? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the usual place...

Didn't GOTG pull in $11m on Thursday night?

Let the armchair box office analysis begin!
JordanKing - 8/8/2014, 8:08 AM
I'm... GROOTing for Guardians.
NovaCorpsFan - 8/8/2014, 8:09 AM
Holy shit, that's nothing compared to Guardians.
SusanFuentes - 8/8/2014, 8:09 AM
This movie isn't going to make even half of what GOTG made.

Went to see GOTG 4 times and all 4 screenings were absolutely packed.
Superior - 8/8/2014, 8:11 AM
That teaser pic would give the four year old version of me nightmares.

Go Guardians! I'll be contributing to the international numbers tomorrow. d(^_^)
charlie2094 - 8/8/2014, 8:13 AM
Not bad.

I reckon Guardians will win the weekend in total, by a few million, but it will be close, could go either way.

Bad word of mouth will probably hurt TMNT, don't see it having legs unlike Guardians. Even if TMNT 'wins', doubt it'll continue to perform strong.

TMNT was awesome... the kids and myself had such a great time enjoying this new take... 4/5 for me. Like GOTG it has it's plot hole issue but overall I really like the direction and the personality of the turtles.
ShawnMadden - 8/8/2014, 8:16 AM
TMNT was fun and the fight scenes were top notch.
YoungThanos - 8/8/2014, 8:17 AM
Its going to be close but it's not like Guardians is getting their @sses handed to them by "Neighbors" or "Maleficent" the way some other fake Marvel films have this year!
ALmazing - 8/8/2014, 8:18 AM
Guardians will have to drop more than 50% for Turtles to win, I think Guardians will win the weekend with turtles being a close second.
KrazyForKomix - 8/8/2014, 8:19 AM
No armchair analysis. Just a congratulations to a job well done to the TMNT franchise. This is great news, ESPECIALLY considering how many little kids are going to be freaked out by those steroided turtles.
sapach - 8/8/2014, 8:19 AM
GOTG please don't lose #1 spot against TMNT

"Didn't GOTG pull in $11m on Thursday night?"

Yeah but isn't GOTG a real movie though?

nibs - 8/8/2014, 8:22 AM
I swear Wilding works for Marvel with the way he words most of these articles.

Just watched TMNT earlier, was a enjoyable movie.
Dont see it beating GOTG in the box office though, just like the winter soldier i think they will be number one for a couple of weeks.
Mastyrwerk - 8/8/2014, 8:25 AM
No interest in TMNT. I liked the franchise in my childhood, but nothing about this new movie has me interested.

With the explosion of comic based movies as well as 80s nostalgia, one has to pick and choose what to support. I would rather see a good movie like Guardians of the Galaxy three times than go see TMNT or another Sony Spider-Meh. They don't seem worth the risk.
Jollem - 8/8/2014, 8:27 AM
i'll take spidey and the turtles over the galaxy guards

Ninja turtles will bring in more money because of nostalgia. I can't wait to see it!!!!!
FerFogs - 8/8/2014, 8:31 AM
@Jollem

No shit.
Jollem - 8/8/2014, 8:33 AM
@nibs - sometimes it seems like feige may own this site :)
Jollem - 8/8/2014, 8:33 AM
@FerFogs - exactly none shit
NateBest - 8/8/2014, 8:33 AM
I love the hate for TMNT from people who haven't seen the film yet... Everyone I know that's watched it has loved it.

Armchair box office analysis is almost as funny as the "armchair viewing" we see from so many users :o)
tarZen - 8/8/2014, 8:35 AM
Is no one else miffed at the origin of the turtles' ninja skills?
Jollem - 8/8/2014, 8:35 AM
preemptive hating is common here :)
TankD - 8/8/2014, 8:35 AM

PhilipG - 8/8/2014, 8:36 AM
A hahaha the Turtles are whipping the talking Racoon and talking tree film.. Wait what the hell did I just say?
Rulk - 8/8/2014, 8:37 AM
@Jollem - you prefer other movies over a MCU movie? What a shocker....

FerFogs - 8/8/2014, 8:38 AM
^^ My point exactly.
Rulk - 8/8/2014, 8:39 AM
I hope GOTG wins week two! Love this movie!! :)

Superior - 8/8/2014, 8:41 AM
@Jollem

"sometimes it seems like feige may own this site :)"

Your beliefs and snarky comment just backfired at the fact that Feige also produced The Amazing Spider-Man.
SageMode - 8/8/2014, 8:44 AM
I'm not taking any chances in spending money on any movie with Michael Bay and Jon Liebesman involved in it. I'll wait till my bro in law pirates it, then I'll see how much of a travesty it is. Lol.
willyburz - 8/8/2014, 8:45 AM
Im going a 4th time this weekend to Guardians, it's that damn good! I just cant support THIS Turtles mess, and the horrible reviews that come with it.
