Liking the new website design. - - And yeah, Garfield is a perfect choice to play teenage Peter. Age means nothing. He knows the comics, understands the somewhat complex personality of Peter/Spiderman, and I know he, and the supporting cast are going to deliver. I love Spiderman and this movie is shaping up nicely.

@ Scorpion8125:

I don't know that they'll be surprised per se. Rebooting the franchise was always going to be a gamble. They might even expect that numbers won't be as high the first time around, but then hope for better numbers with a sequel once the reboot is established. If that's the case, then they were likely thinking long term gains.

As far as the money comparison goes, here's the thing. The Transformers movies made a lot of money too. Revenge of the Fallen exceeded $800 million, while Dark of the Moon exceeded $1 billion, but that series was panned by critics and many fans too. I really enjoyed the first one, and thought the last two were not so good. Then there's the Pirates of the Carribean series, which also made a ton of money, all of them above $650 million, but never succeeded in surpassing the first film in quality.

In short, box office earnings don't mean all that much in terms of quality (story, script, etc.)

@scropion TASM is gonna make a lot of money because first of all people wanna see the new cast, the trailer includes peters parents that's another reason. The movie could be the best CBM next year even better than SM2 and it will make money purely based on curiosity of another live action Spidey not including Tobey McGuire.

I'd like to ammend my statement. I unintentionally insinuated that the first Spidey series wasn't a quality series. That's not what I meant. The Spidey movies made money because

a) It's Spider-man
b) Raimi did a good job on the first two
and c) whatever other reasons I may have missed. 'a' and 'b' are the important ones.

All I meant was that high box office earnings don't necessarily mean that the fans are happy, as was best illustrated by the Transformers series.

I'd also like to clarify something. I did enjoy the first Spider-man series. I was happy with it mostly. The 2002 Spider-man is what got me into the comics in the first place. When Spider-man 4 was set to come out under Raimi, I went and saw Brothers (2009) because I wanted to see Tobey at his best. I saw Drag Me to Hell (2009) because I wanted to see if Raimi had recaptured that spark. Both movies had me really excited to see Maguire and Raimi return to make the 4th Spidey. Then all the drama started, the movie was off, and I mourned like an angry little rage monster for a few months until more promising news started to come out. People are taking each little reveal in their own way, optimistic or pessimistic or whatever. That's fine really.

The only reason why I'm being as optimistic as I am is because I like the character so much. I want to be hopeful. As far as I can see, Peter Parker has been given the Ultimate Spider-man treatment. Its a contemporary look at Parker, but having read that series along side the back issues of ASM, I feel that USM Peter Parker is still very much the Peter Parker we all know and love. So wardrobe, hair, and basketball inspired costume aside (I admit to liking it), Peter at least acts like Peter Parker, which is the impression I'm getting based off of the Empire interviews and the San Diego comic con footage reel.

I'm not sold on this movie yet.

1)Marc Webb is new to the game and the movie he did before is not an action flick. This could be a good thing in the end but as of now its iffy.

2)I don't think Garfield's right for the roll. He looks ridiculous with the goofy hair and his performance in Social Network didn't exactly impress me at all.

3)The lower budget can be a good thing, as it forces teh director to focus on character development over eye-popping action scenes (see XMen First Class), but usually its a signal of a studios lack of faith in the production and desire not to lose out so much money. Spiderman's a big property, Sony. You should treat it like one.

4) The Lizard looks lame IMO. Having him as the only villian seems sketchy, though if Webb plays up the mellodrama of Peter having to fight his idol it can be good.

5) Webb seems to have taken a more serious approach to the character, which is wrong since Spiderman is not a very serious character. Sure he has his serious moments, but his silly insults, goofy monologues and funny one liners are essential to his character. If Webb plays up the teen drama to the point it overshadows his funnier side or his action sequences he'll lose touch with Spidey.

Hate Spiderman 3 all you want I think most people will agree that Raimi got spidey right with the first two movies. Webb seems to be trying a different take which is fine as long as its good. I'm not going to say its going to be bad because I, like everyone else in the world, lack the abillity to travel to the future and see the movie :p Still, I have my doubts so far...

Well have to wait and see.
