After impressive turns in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and War Horse, Benedict Cumberbatch's big screen career has really started taking off as is evident by his recent casting in Star Trek 2 as the sequels mysterious villain. Of course, the actor has already earned himself a fairly sizeable fan base as the star of hit BBC series, Sherlock. His Watson? None other than The Hobbit's Bilbo Baggins; Martin Freeman. Talking to MTV News at the Oscars, Cumberbatch discussed his experiences working on the Peter Jackson helmed flick so far.

"I was very lucky [to work] with Pete. As far as the experience, what an extraordinary one it was because at the time I was in my work; I was in isolation with him and this incredible tag team. And at the very cool place with that technology doing mo-cap for two characters, Smaug the dragon and another character, which will remain nameless, and it was an awful lot of fun."

"It's a sort of wonderful ongoing process. I spent a lot of time recording voice as well as doing movements. So, it was sort of freeing; it was fun. It was like playing a game. It's going to be an amazing film; it's going to be a real treat. I watched 'The Lord of the Rings' again before I started working, and the way those films grow in depth of craft on every level are extraordinary. Their mark is for that."

"For Martin to be sitting there playing Bilbo is amazing. He's going to be amazing, he's going to be fantastic in this film."

I think he's a great choice for Smaug but I still think Alan Rickman would have been better. Still, I'm stoked to see Benedict tear up both of his roles in The Hobbit and Star Trek 2.

Boring. Who the hell is he playing in Star Trek 2?

Cumberpunch (that's what we call him in my house) is such a great actor. It's great to see him getting all these high-profile roles. He was great in his small roles in War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and of course he's phenomenal as The Great Detective. Now we get to see him stretch his villainous chops in Star Trek and The Hobbit! Can't wait!

It does worry me that they are doing mo cap for a dragon. I don't want smaug to be dragonheart

Nice! Glad they did motion capture as well. It really helps when getting the movements even for something like a dragon. It brings the actor's personality out. Smaug should have all the presonality of the Draco from Dragonheart, and all the menace of the Dragon from the "Beowulf" film and "Dragonslayer"

does anyone know what the second character is he's talking about. I can't tell if he meant a second one in The Hobbit or not.

@valeriesghost

Let's just say he's talking about a certain Dark Lord searching for a certain ring ;)

YAY.

Love Benedict, love Martin. Both fantastic actors. If there's any way to cap off this year, it's with The Hobbit pt. 1, which has an outstanding cast already. Now they've just compounded the fact.

It's great seeing Cumberbatch's brilliance put to high profile performances.

I can't wait!

@SuperDan89 Seriously? Where'd you hear that?

thanks @superdan!

Discovered this guy last year in BBC's 'Sherlock'. Very impressive, and I'm excited to see he's getting work in movies (especially The Hobbit)!
