The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was finally released on Friday and so far seems almost as divisive as last year's first instalment in the trilogy. So, what did CBM's vocal community make of the sequel, and did you choose to see it in HFR 3D or regular 2D? Here's your chance to tell us!

I loved The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (as you can see from my review of the movie by clicking here). Just like the first instalment, the sequel is very different to The Lord of the Rings, and for good reason; they are after all based on two very different books and take place at quite different eras in Middle-Earth. Regardless, it's been clear from the comment sections here on CBM that you all have some very passionate feeling about Peter Jackson's middle part of his trilogy, so here's your chance to let us know how you all rated The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug! As usual, be sure to sound off with your thoughts below after casting your votes.

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

This just shows how bad MoS really was. It was the most disappointing film of the year.
Too bad DC are panicking and turning MoS into a cluster[frick]

Some of the CGI looked video game-ish (dwarves and elves flying around ignoring physics) but Smaug is right up there with Superman's cape as some of the finest CGI I've ever seen.

I absolutely loved the film, but let's all take a moment to say just how surprisingly GOOD the 3D was.

I never liked 3D, it never improved the experience for me. However, this film frankly had me jumping out of my seat from something as simple as a bumblebee buzzing by or an arrow flying towards you.

Nice job Jackson, oh and BC as Smaug and the work done for his CGI was just mindblowing.

I saw it in HFR 3D and it looked great. The movie was good despite minor things like conveniences, that overdone barrel scene, and a slightly choppy 3rd act. But it left me wanting more in the end. Didnt feel like its running time so thats good.

Good movie. Smaug looked fantastic. Legolas and Tauriel were beast. The barrels scene was awesome! The cameos by Jackson, Colbert, and especially Gimli were great. The CGI, on the other hand, was a letdown.

The barrel scene should go down as the best action sequence of this year

I wasn't expecting it to be that damn good

Oh yeah I forgot about Gimili! Great Easter egg! The way Legolas smirked too! Little did he know that'd be a brother to him 50 years later. Haha

And PJ cameo eating the Carrot... Again! Awesome.

Bomber was my favorite character. He had done of the best scenes IMO.

I keep forgetting about the Gandalf vs Sauron fight. That was great.

In a way, this movie had multiple cliffhangers.

Legolas chasing after Bolg.

Gandalf trapped.

Bard arrested.

Smaug making his way to Laketown.

Kyos

1. It's not about following the book anymore. It's about fitting these movies into Jackson own continuity, whole using the book as a major influence.

2. Honestly, if it wasn't action it would be a bore fest.

3. Really?

@devlin- man of steel....(FANTASTIC)!

Too many people complain about man of steel not being like the source material, everybody was pooping on the hobbit for being so far from the book, but you and others praise it.
So your opinion on man of steel.....definitely does not matter, as mine.
But I did love man of steel

@Devlin712 Buddy, MoS was still pretty awesome (and not at all a disappointment. But in agreement with most others here, the two movies are completely unrelated.

My opinion of DoS is that it was an awesome movie! My two major issues with it are how easily it appeared to be for orcs to infiltrate any area that the company passed through (the Woodland realm, Lake Town, etc.). I mean, were there no guards on hand to send out a warning signal or anything?!

My other quip with it was the barrel scene. At times I thought the way the dwarfs managed to dodge numerous arrows and perform those stunts while in the barrels was a bit ridiculous. It was fun, yes, but even for a fantastical adventure movie (a movie, I know) I had trouble swallowing it.

That said, loved the scenes with Beor and Smaug above all else (though I wish they could have gone with the traditional six-limbed dragon versus a wyvern version) and will definitely see this again in theaters!!!

Very good flick, definitely worth seeing in 3D and HFR. I was actually a little disappointed in Smaug, he seemed a bit CGI-ish to me. The most obvious though were the longer shots of the orcs riding the wargs. Otherwise the CG was fine. My only other main complaint was on lack of subtlety on Jackson's part in certain scenes. He doesn't have to show us Sauron repeatedly, just once would've been fine. Showing us only his angelic form would be even better..

Hobbit 2 was such a great movie, better then the first I think, the dragon was simply beautifully done, had some awesome fight scenes, the barrel scene was exciting, cant think of any complaints, seen it twice already
