It has been confirmed today that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will pen the script for AMC's Preacher adaptation, later serving as executive producers through their Point Grey Pictures banner. Breaking Bad's Sam Catlin will executive produce and serve as showrunner for the show based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's critically acclaimed DC Comics/Vertigo comic book series. Various attempts have been made over the years to bring Preacher to the big and small screen, but none have come quite so close to happening as this.

"Steve Dillon and I are very happy to see Preacher being developed for TV, which seems a much more natural home for the story than a two-hour movie," Ennis said in a lengthy statement released today. "Between them, Sony TV and AMC have brought viewers two of my favorite shows with Breaking Bad and Mad Men, and it's exactly that kind of creative commitment and courage that Preacher needs. Obviously it’s taken a while, but Ken Levin along with Neal Moritz and his team refused to give up, long after the point when I myself grew skeptical, and their unrelenting enthusiasm for the project has gotten us where we need to be. I’m particularly impressed that Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin understand Preacher fully -- meaning they get it for what it is, not some vague approximation. All in all, it looks like Preacher can now be brought to TV in a way that I'd previously not have thought possible, and I very much appreciate that Steve and I have been included in the conversation in the way that we have."

Preacher revolves around Rev. Jesse Custer, a bad-ass Texas preacher who after losing his faith, learns that God has left Heaven and forsaken his duties. Jesse becomes the only one who is able to track God down -- and hold him responsible for his dereliction of duties. Tulip O'Hare, Jesse's beer guzzling vampire ex-girlfriend, accompanies him on his quest for answers. But the story doesn't end there -- the Saint of Killers -- an immortal killing machine and Western lone gunman type -- is hot on their trail with the lone goal of hunting and killing Jesse.

"This is amazing! We've tried for seven years to work on Preacher and we're so psyched AMC is finally letting us. It is our favorite comic of all time, and we're going to do everything we can to do it right. Humperdoo!" Rogen and Goldberg said in a joint statement.

DestroyerofHaters - 2/6/2014, 12:11 PM
I can't understand Seth Rogan hate as a writer? Has he done anything to lose trust yet?
Preacher could/should be beyond amazing if done right.

Good news

I am not a big Seth fan but I am wishing for the best.

EPIC! Idris Elba is needed, so is the bald guy from Titanic and maybe we can get a hot chick out of this too?
ManCalledSting - 2/6/2014, 12:18 PM
Pleas no.
jimoakley666 - 2/6/2014, 12:18 PM
As long as Rogen stays off camera (I like the guy. Just not for this) then I think it could be good. The two of them are solid writers.

People need to realize that with The Green Hornet, the studio was breathing down his neck, i think he's going to have a lot more creative freedom with adapting this. I'm looking forward to it.
jimoakley666 - 2/6/2014, 12:21 PM
Johnny Depp's first TV gig in years? Maybe? Always thought he looked like Jesse.
ALegendaryPanda - 2/6/2014, 12:21 PM

I'm going to see how many times I can click this pen.

I take it back, Seth Rogen can be the ass-face kid. The kid who's the son of the sheriff or whatever.
revloveR - 2/6/2014, 12:27 PM
if franco doesn't play custer it's all for nothing.
Chewtoy - 2/6/2014, 12:29 PM
Wow... an AMC cable series is probably the height of long-form comic adaptation that anyone could expect, especially for a mature themed comic, and people here are bitching because they don't like one of the executive producers.
TheClemster - 2/6/2014, 12:32 PM
I don't think I have ever read this series
TheClemster - 2/6/2014, 12:33 PM

Looks a lot like Constantine but darker
Pasto - 2/6/2014, 12:39 PM

InfiniteMonkey - 2/6/2014, 12:45 PM
I came in expecting to see women in bikinis, this is boring.
HeadPool420 - 2/6/2014, 12:47 PM
This might be good if they respect the source material and don't go goofy with it, and keep Seth away from the front of the camera.
tomasocelot - 2/6/2014, 12:48 PM
I heard that gusto and pasto will be making a cameo appearance

LRascal - 2/6/2014, 12:48 PM
Preacher is the best comic series of its time. If you haven't read it yet--Treat yourself (unless you are religious or uptight). DC used to have the full first issue online for free.
BezierCurve - 2/6/2014, 12:50 PM

Also: Really "tomasocelot"? really?
TheClemster - 2/6/2014, 12:50 PM

@ Yoss

LMFAO

ask, you shall received
WallyWestNAM - 2/6/2014, 1:07 PM
I've been wanting to pick up this series, sounds like a great read; and the subject matter, the weird, irreverent theological madness, Seth and Evan could very easily make it work on the screen. not just as a screwball comedy, but a serious action drama with their effed up humor spursed in. I have a lot of confidence in this series.
blkchi - 2/6/2014, 1:10 PM
Ill pass Rogen is okay dont like both source materiak for this and green hornet im a 80s not 70s baby..on a seperate note read stormwatch..etf..comics havr come a long way..thats not always a good thing..

Gusto Even at her age, wow. Such a dame that.
RamonSuarez - 2/6/2014, 1:21 PM
Preacher is an epic comic run.

I think Rogan and Goldberg can do it justice.

They excel at the type of dark humor which made Ennis' work a masterpiece in the graphic novel genre.
TheClemster - 2/6/2014, 1:23 PM
@ Yoss / Gus
