In spite of of the lukewarm reception of Mark Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with critics and some fans alike, it seems like general audiences are swinging on drones to catch the latest film featuring everyone's favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Variety reports The Amazing Spiderman 2 opened to an Amazing $8.7 during Thursday night screenings in the US.

To put it into perspective, this opening is higher than the $7.5 million The Amazing Spider-Man pulled on Thursday night screenings 2 years ago, but it is still lower than Captain America Winter Soldier's $10.2 million just a month ago. Projections are putting The Amazing Spider-Man somewhere between $91-$95 million opening weekend in the US. Perhaps a little lower than Sony was hoping for.

There is no doubt that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will have a very impressive opening but only time will tell how this lower than expected opening will affect the franchise. We also have to keep in mind it has grossed an impressive  $150+ million internationally. What do you guys think? Is it disappointing the latest Spider-Man film won't cross the century mark on its opening weekend? What will it mean if it opens lower than Winter Soldier? Leave your thoughts down below and thank you for reading.

Awesome stuff, really enjoyed the film. Loads of problems, but still very enjoyable. Should come close to $100 for the weekend, be very close to Cap 2.

SebHope - 5/2/2014, 10:06 AM
Cap opened on a spring break weekend so it was expected to have a lower midnight opening. where as they are expecting Spidey to do much stronger with families then Cap did so saturday will be the real decider on whether its higher or lower then caps opening, id guess it'll end up slightly lower.
BaneSmash - 5/2/2014, 10:10 AM
It was a great film! Loved it.
Bekss - 5/2/2014, 10:11 AM
Less than Cap in the summer? Wow. Isn't this a spiderman movie?
JoJo1982 - 5/2/2014, 10:12 AM
Yeah Satuday and Sunday should be really strong for Spidey since kids will be off for the weekend
VIRILEMAN - 5/2/2014, 10:12 AM
I freaken loved this movie. Some silly parts for sure, but best Spidey flick yet!
JayTopStix - 5/2/2014, 10:12 AM
I thought it was a lot more fun than WS. Great flick
TheRealRemyLebeau - 5/2/2014, 10:17 AM
No it won't be disappointing that it will not open at or above $100 million @kallarkent. Cap 2 showed that if you have legs you can surpass many comicbook movies. This film's reviews by critics won't stop the fan enjoyment. This film will do great hands down. It was the definitive spidey film to date. Not the best comicbook movie to date but worthy.
Shamo - 5/2/2014, 10:18 AM
Best marvel movie to date. My 2nd favorite CBM after TDK
QuestiontheAnswer - 5/2/2014, 10:18 AM
Felicia Hardy will make the 3rd worth watching.
MrBatmor - 5/2/2014, 10:20 AM
Well there is no doubt this is gonna crush the box office...i think this will end near 850 million..
SpiderFraud - 5/2/2014, 10:20 AM
Almost three weeks of bad word of mouth, probably hurt the movie a little bit.
MarkV - 5/2/2014, 10:20 AM
It's nice to see all the love for this great character.

I'll admit, though, that part of me wants it to fail. It's depressing to see Sony make so much money off of Spider-man, when you know Marvel will never get the rites back.

Imagine how epic a Marvel Spider-man movie would be.
Brainiac13 - 5/2/2014, 10:21 AM
Bank Holiday on Monday in England........kids are gonna go spidey mad.
Brainiac13 - 5/2/2014, 10:23 AM
Thumbs up Klarky! ;)
Shamo - 5/2/2014, 10:24 AM
Dehaan > Franco, by a huge margin.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 5/2/2014, 10:24 AM
The Amazing Spiderman opened at $62 million. This will open up between $90-$100 million. That's a win and a upgrade if I ever seen one. Also the budget was cheaper than the first. Yes the.promo budget is large but not to far behind the first which had a higher budget if I'm not .mistaken. this is an upgrade if I ever saw one for a sequel. Folks holding mega huge openings and billion dollar status as a regular occurrence are out there mind. Can't see this movie failing.
Pending - 5/2/2014, 10:25 AM
The most disappointed I've ever been walking out of the theater.
l0rdleg0las - 5/2/2014, 10:25 AM
Suck it Spidy!

Cap is the comic movie of the year!
JoJo1982 - 5/2/2014, 10:26 AM
@markV

But it is a marvel movie

Does every movie have to been own by marvel studios in order for it to be good!?! Smh
l0rdleg0las - 5/2/2014, 10:26 AM
@Pending

I'm guessing you didn't see Spider-Man 3, TDKR or IM3 in theaters?
ElWoofWoof - 5/2/2014, 10:28 AM
@Shamo you are a joke if this was your 2nd fav CBM of all time and anything you post is invalid

Opening weekend will be closer to 90 million based on the fact people are sheep. This will not gain momentum, but quickly lose it. All interest will be turned towards Godzilla after May 15th.

You have 13 Days Spider-Man. Good Luck
MarkV - 5/2/2014, 10:29 AM
Makes me wish I was 10 years old again. I would have loved this film.
TheRealRemyLebeau - 5/2/2014, 10:29 AM
@MarkV its getting love because its a good movie actually the best spidey movie. This was the spidey I grew up on.
ThePowerCosmic - 5/2/2014, 10:30 AM
This film made me realize that only Marvel Studios has the formula to make superior comic book films at this point. Everything else is sub par to horrible shit!

Fox and Sony are out for me. I hate what they are doing with their CBMs.

I am hoping the DCCU turns out to be great. Then only the MCU and DCCU should exist.
