Your asses are gonna be cryin' to your skanky-ass queen! Oh mommy, don't let the bad man hurt us! Fuck you! We gonna whup your momma's ass! Woo!"
Cole Train - Gears of War 2

Now while this site is called ComicBookMovie, we cover more than just comics. We cover books and video games. Hell one time I saw a editorial about the Hunger Games (not hating on you who wrote it, just showing the diversity on this site. I know who you are but I’m not hating). Now lately we’ve heard about Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell. Now I love Gears of War. I have played all of the Gears games and do have Gears of War: Judgment on preorder. My favorite character would probably be Cole Train. The character I can relate to the most would be Baird mainly because he’s a smart-ass and can be seen as a dick and yea I’m a smart-ass and at times I’m a dick if any of you didn’t catch that already. I have Gears figures of the Gears of War 3 Cole Train and the Gears of War 3 Journey's End Marcus figure. One day I even hope to get a Lancer off Gamestop but they are so damn expensive and I got no money to waste, yet. With news last year that a Gears movie is being shopped around, I got excited that we may finally see the Gears on the big screen. With that I also had doubt. There has never been a great video game movie. Hell there hasn’t even been a good video game movie. I don’t want the film to fail. Here are my suggestions in making a Gears of War movie.

MAKE IT RATED R

I have played some games in the Halo series, some games in the Call of Duty series, and all the games in the Gears of War series. Of all 3 series, Gears of War is the most violent by a long shot. Halo and Call of Duty may feature little gushes of blood in the game when someone shoots someone, but Gears of War takes the violence to another level. In Gears of War, when someone is down you can rip their arm out of their socket and start beating them to death with their own arm. In Gears of War, we have the Lancer which is a gun that has a chainsaw on it and you can chainsaw people in half. The violence is over the top in the Gears of War series and the film should feature it. Don’t try to focus on selling the movie to kids. The game is rated M for 17 and up. R rated is the same thing so why would you focus on making the movie so kids can see it when the games aren’t even sold to kids?

Rewrite The Script

The script was written by the producer and creator of the Underworld series, Len Wiseman and also Chris Morgan who wrote Wanted & Fast & Furious. When they were asked about the Gears of War movie they said the follow:

”I suck at video games, it just takes me too long and I can’t get the coordination of ‘em. When I was on Live Free Or Die Hard, I had to choose some video game for the background in a scene with Kevin Smith. I was shown about a dozen games and told to ‘Choose one to be in the background’ and I said ‘this one looks really, really cool whatever it is,’ and it was Gears Of War. I just really connected with it; the design of it the world, the whole thing. So I actually bought an Xbox 360 to start researching what it was.”

That scared me a bit but it turns out the Gears of War script that leaked has the following:

- Marcus & Anya (the female narrator from the games) get it on
- Maria goes missing at the end, setting us up for her and Dom's "reunion"
- Adam Fenix first discovers the Locust when he sends six robots down into "The Hollow". These are all named after Gears developers: Mike, Rod, Anne, Kim, Lee & Cliff.
- Cole and Baird feature, but only shortly at the beginning, and only as COGs for the final fight sequence at Jacinto.
- The screenplay is full of hat-tips to the games. Example: in the opening battle, Marcus roadie-runs for the camera, as well as using a meat shield.

There is more to the script. I think it’s good but my problem is that it was written by guys who didn’t know the Gears of War series. I think that it needs to be relooked at and rewritten by guys who do know Gears. The movie is originally a prequel to the first Gears game and I think that it shouldn’t be a prequel but at the same time shouldn’t be a direct adaption.

For example Batman Begins was heavily influenced by Batman: Year One but wasn’t a direct adaption of it. I think that’s what the Gears of War movie should aim for.

Keep Delta Squad Together And Make Them As Relatable As They Are In The Games

If you look at Delta Squad we have 4 men who are so different but anyone can relate to them.

Marcus Fenix is a guy looking for redemption, looking for a second chance in life and takes that opportunity.

Dom Santiago is the guy who looks towards the future. He has a sense of family and spends most of Gears of War 2 looking for his wife who was captured. Won’t tell you what happen when he found her but let’s just say I honestly did cry.

Damon Baird is the tech guy who can fix anything in the game and he’s a smart ass always making jokes.

Augustus Cole AKA Cole Train is the vibrant and enthusiastic character. He is also the trash talker and the sports star among the squad.

Anyone could relate to these 4 characters and it’s important to keep them relatable.

Use The Expendables As Influence

Let’s be honest, this is still a video game movie. There has never been a good video game movie. Even as a Gears fan, I’m not looking for the movie to be the best movie ever. I’m hoping that the film is good. Just good. Like Burton’s Batmans or Iron Man 2 or The Incredible Hulk. The Expendables movies should be key influences. Make some changes around they could be like Delta Squad. Sylvester Stallone’s character, Barney Ross, could be looked at like Marcus Fenix. Jason Statham’s character, Lee Christmas, could be looked at like Dom. Dolph Lundgren’s character, Gunner Jensen, could be looked at like Baird. Lastly Terry Crews’ character, Hale Caesar, could be looked at like Cole Train. Boom we have the Gears. The Expendables films are good movies but nothing great and at the same time I’m not looking for great, I’m looking for good.

Do Live Action Not CGI

What you see above is the guy who voices Cole Train, Lester Speight in real life. When a Gears of War film first started, it was said that it would be all CGI. Why would I watch a movie that is all CGI that is based off a game when I can play the game and the cut scenes are in CGI? Makes no sense right? Speaking of Lester...

Lester Speight To Play Cole Train

Why should the voice of the Cole Train play him you ask?

Nuff said.

In the end, if a Gears of War film does happen; I’m just hoping it’s good. I don’t want it to be like other video game films so I’m lowering my standards and hoping for good. What are your thoughts? Comment below. Peace.

@IronMan13: Okay, now we know you're definitely either a young kid or a complete teenager (I am a teen myself). Call of Duty is over rated and if you want a Call of Duty movie, go out and see a war movie. It's nothing completely original. To be honest, Gears of War has a much more engaging story and would make for a better film. Despite the fact that I am not a big shooter fan of any kind, I will stick up for Gears and say that it does have interesting characters and a good story. Something Call of Duty doesn't have but, I'm not gonna argue with you on that.

@Levi: Great write up as usual man. I always have had respect for you as well as I have had (and still do have) much respect for BattlinMurdock. I think Gears of War would be an interesting movie. But, not being a fan of the games myself (I've only played Gears 2) I think it's interesting enough for me to buy a ticket for the film. But, as with anything else like this. You need someone who is passionate about it that won't mess it up (similar for what I've beend doing for my fan-made Mortal Kombat script).

Gears of War is one of those games that has the potential to be a great movie, because it has themes that go deeper than most games. I've grown up on Gears, starting in Middle School. I instantly felt an attachment to Marcus, because I was a guy who felt like he had done alot of wrong and needed a second chance.

Thats what makes these powerful. Behind all of the chainsaws and gore and explosions, there is a hidden human core to the characters thats very real. Thats rare in games these days due to a little phrase I like to call "callofdutyization". You arent going to find characters you connect with in Call of Duty or Battlefield, and anyone going to look for that is going to be disappointed. The only games that come to mind that ive played that I've felt an emotional attraction to these days are Halo 4 (the master chief and cortana dynamic was done perfectly), Mass Effect, Far Cry 3, and Gears of War. It would be great to see Gears get more recognition. I think most people just see the trailers and see it as a shoot em up, which it is, but the emotional scenes can rival alot of things out there. I hope it proves alot of assumptions out there wrong.

Thats what makes it really stand out from the rest of the games out there, its realistic characters facing impossible odds. Not these over the top heroes blowing shit up. I love your reference to The Expendables. I love these films, Christmas being a favorite due to myself being a knife collector. They are good action films that are really good at breaking bones and blowing peoples heads off, but they also take time to humanize the people doing it and see that they wonder about their lives.

Gears can easily be transferred to the screen, how they would make it fit into the storyline I am also interested in seeing. As long as its Delta Squad. There was a fancast on this site somewhere that was perfect and everyone agreed that it should happen, I'll have to look it up again.

And Lester is a must, and if you havent already, look up "Terry Tate: Office Linebacker".

@Levi

I forgot to mention nice work. I'm not new to coming here for news, but I'm new to writing and commenting. Your quickly becoming one of my favorites to read.

I don't care much for The Expendables, but I get what you're selling here. Real solid viewpoint here. As a huge Gears fan myself, I approve of this editorial.
