EDITORIAL: The Hero The World Needs
LEVITIKUZ talks about how with recent tragedies going on in this world, why Man of Steel needs to be the movie the world needs right now just like how Spider-Man was the movie the world needed back in 2002. Click to check it out.
"You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you. They will stumble, they will fall. But in time they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders."
-Jor-El "Man of Steel"
For comic book fans, recently we have been very excited. We are getting ready for the release of Iron Man 3 and recently we just had a new trailer to Man of Steel. While those are great for the comic book movie fans, there are more important things going on. Recently a tragic event has taken place. 2 bombs were place at the end of the Boston Marathon race and went off. As of right now 176 people are injured, 3 have been declared dead and 17 people are in critical condition. 8 of those 17 people in critical condition are children. Lately it almost seems as though this world is going to hell. As children, I think it's fair to say we all looked up to superheroes and loved them but what happens when your worst nightmare comes to live? When those heroes you read in the comics, can't save you. But what if I said they can? Back in 2002 after the events of 9-11, there was a hero the world looked up to and strives to be in Spider-Man. More than 10 years later, we need a new hero for the world to look up to. We need a Superman.
Now before I fully begin, I want to remind you all that this article isn't intended to provoke or start a flame war between DC Comics and Marvel Comics. The reason I am writing why Superman needs to be this and not Iron Man, Thor, or Wolverine is because of who Superman is. The only Marvel Comics character that is like Superman is Spider-Man. Superman is a superhero we all look up to and gives us hope. He is a selfless character that puts our needs before him. He is a god that chooses to walk and live among the humans rather than rule them. Iron Man isn't a character truly like that. Tony Stark most of the times put his needs before others. The reason he became Iron Man in the films were to destroy terrorist organizations that had his weapons. Also Tony uses guns and weapons to save the day and in the times now, let's just say we're not sure about looking up to a hero who uses guns and other weapons with the intent to kill. The reason Thor can't be this hero is mostly due to the fact Thor: The Dark World will mostly take place on Asgard. Wolverine can't be this hero mainly because he is too violent. We need a hero now. I love Wolverine, I love Iron Man, and I love Thor. I swear this isn't an attempt at a flame war and if there is any arguing, I will not only delete your comments but email you straight to Galactus. We don't need that dumb stuff going on. Not here anyways. There are more important things going on in this world than the pettiness of an online war between which Comic Book Company is better.
On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Twin Towers collapsed. It was a time of darkness. When Spider-Man came out, it was not just a hero but a movie everyone can stand up and cheer for around the world. The world needed a film like Spider-Man during these times. We all know and saw Spider-Man. The reason the world needed a hero like Spider-Man at that time is because Spider-Man was an all American type of a hero. We needed a hero who knew right from wrong, came from humble beginnings, that doesn't kill, a hero that would put his life on the line and do the right thing, and a hero that would do the things we couldn't and would take a stand. It was the perfect time for a movie like Spider-Man and the fact Spider-Man protects New York made people also cheer for him. You can from moments in Spider-Man and in the series how much of an influence he was. Moments in Spider-Man like the scene where we see New Yorkers stand up and attack Green Goblin while Spider-Man had the car of kids and Mary Jane dangling shows how our heroes inspire us to do the right thing.
Let’s think of some tragedies recently in this world. We had the shootings in Aurora, Colorado during the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. In the Aurora shootings we had 12 people died and 58 were injured. We had the horrific school shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. In those shootings we had 20 first grade students die and 6 school personal members die. Recently we had the bombings at the Boston Marathon. I was thinking about showing some photos from the Boston Marathon bombings but due to the graphic nature of these photos, I decided to go against it. What is happening in our world nowadays is scary. We live in a world that it's become scary to take your children, go see a movie, and to participate in public events. This world is becoming scarier as the times change. We need a hero, an event like what Spider-Man was to influence and inspire people.
Now I understand that a movie can't give these people back their children, their parents, their family members or friends. Movies are meant for you to leave the ordinary and enter the extraordinary. I am a big sports fan and I can tell you that there have been many examples of sporting events that's has eased the pain. One sporting event happened the other day, MLB games all over the country where playing and the fans were singing “Sweet Caroline” which is known as a theme song of sorts for the Boston Red Sox’s. Even Yankee fans were singing it. Another event was a couple of years ago; the New Orleans Saint’s first game back in the Superdome after the stadium had to be repaired from the damages of Hurricane Katrina. Right now we need a hero that we all can look up to and cheer for like what Spider-Man was after 9-11. We live in a very corrupted world. We live in a world where people know who the Kardashians are then people probably know 2-3 police officers or firefighters. We live in a world where sports stars are selfish and overpaid while most members of the military are selfless and underpaid. We need a hero for the world to look up to. We need a hero that the world can look at and forget all the wrong in the world even if it's for a couple of hours while they are there. We need a hero the world knows and can stand up and cheer for. The world needs a Superman. Our world needs a Superman to help motivate and inspire us.
