Jman & Johnny Love Movie Review; G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Was it "G.I. Joe: The Great American let down" or the best movie of the summer?


For this review Jman and Johnny are "Movin on Up" out of the Den and into the Portage 16 IMAX Theater in Portage IN.

I really had high hopes for this movie, especially for the true G.I. Joe fans. But unfortunately the movie just did not develop the way it should have for the long waiting fans of the original cartoon series from the 80's.

Johnny and I will be reviewing District 9 from the Portage 16 IMAX Theater. We will see you ComicBookMovie fans next week!!

This movie was bad, and way too much usage of the flashback bull crap. The movie bored the hell out of me, CGI was lacking, acting was piss poor, dialogue was just as bad. Nothing good about this flick.

I am what would be considered a "fan boy" of GIJOE and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie! I grew up on the cartoons, comics and toys but I keep an open mind to things and realize that my way is not the only way of doing something. This movie was fun from start to finish and definitely had me wanting more at the end(unlike any other movie this summer)!

Yes, I would have done things differently if it was up to me but all in all, my lady and I really had fun and can't wait for the sequel.

I know i give ROTF a hard time, but i was very impressed by the actual Transformers themselves and all the action. I just couldn't enjoy Joe.

This movie was good but you had to have a open mind for sure. I think they started the new line of comics and lets face it what G.I.Joe was has ended and now they are starting a new generation of Joe and makin it work for today. to insure a tomorrow all of the old school fan boys would have liked to have seen the old origins but the fact is that Hollywood always strips and rebuilds every thing they put there hands on and all things considered I'm ready for a sequel.

not a bad review. i felt pretty much the same except i thought the cgi was awful. the cgi fish and polar bear were just horrendous.

When i saw the polar bear i swear to God i thought Duke was going to fist fight it or something. That wouldn't even have been the silliest thing in the movie! The sinking ice takes that title.

as you can tell from my post on the other sites the ice thing just really bugged the shit out of me. and i agree with the polar bear, i just got done shaking my head at the fish and them bam, a frigen polar bear. and it served no purpose, they didnt fight it, it didnt scare them, apparently it was just there to look bad. mission accomplished.

haha, shocking isn't it? Although by that stage nothing could have surprised me. I just get angry when i think about how little Sommers and his team of chimps with type writers think of their target audience. Can you imagine the conversation..

"Stephen, you know, ice floats..and im pretty sure 99% of everyone in the world over 5 knows that..

"Yes! But dont worry because its a "popcorn" movie!..They have "left their brains at home"! Im free to insult their intelligence all i want! Stick a rubbish looking cartoon polar bear in there while your at it, and have it hump Scarletts leg..(oh sorry, wrong movie!)"

It's really to bad for the hardcore fans that have been waiting for a good joe movie. They just didnt get it. Shrek was successful in drawing in the adults and keeping the kids interested. That was freaking shrek. I cant figure out why hollywood always dumbs it down to draw in the next generation, its kinda scary. What movie will stick out in there minds in 20 years?

Very Scary. You got to accept that the special effects back then wernt that good. But the story and the actors/acting (for the most part)was solid. Thats what made the movie. How has hollywood forgoten that?

I just got back from this movie. I am a hardcore Joe fan. I was so excited for this movie to come out. I've been very optimistic. I was even hopeful and would agree whenever Leee777 would call this movie the Dark Horse of the summer. The truth is that this move was terribly god awful shit. Nothing about this movie held true to either cartoon or comic. Duke and Ripcord were horrible. Their acting made me want to punch babies. And Scarlett having feelings for Ricord! WTF!?! CRAP. The Baroness being a good guy. CRAP! And lamer than lame was Cobra Commander and Destro. Terrible Terrible Terrible. This movie was terrible. The acting and storyline and casting was just downright offensive to fans of GI Joe. Where was the accent on the Baroness. Lame lame lame lame lame. The only reason I would purchase this movie when it comes out on dvd is if the world runs out of toilet paper and I needed to wipe my ass. TERRIBLE. sorry. = (

Best movie I've seen this summer that's easy....STAR TREK and Im not a fan of the t.v. series. The worst: Wolverine and thats only ,because I havent seen G.I.Joe on dvd yet. About G.I.JOE I have a reboot idea I mention on another thread I cant seem to find. My idea was to have a few of our own to reboot G.I.Joe from cast-directing...here's my list.

LEEE777: CASTING why?Because he had such high hopes for the movie and then they cast that CLOWN Wayans as RIPCORD I knew then the movie was going to be crap. Im sure LEEE would've thought twice about that choice and not made it...right LEEE?
Rors01 : Asst director I like his ideas usually and every good director needs a capable asst.
SHAMAN :Director\CGI I think he has really great ideas and it seems he would know just how we'd want to see our action displayed on the big screen...and he submits such nice drawings...LOL.
HAWK : Writer I've read some of his stuff pretty good. I think HE and SHAMAN would work real well together and bring us the JOE we all want to see...and I know there's nothing in their story that'll justify using a CLOWN.
O.K. folks I think I've found the solution into fixing this MAJOR disappiontment of the summer as stated by the masses here on CBM.com. As long as LEEE doesnt cast that CLOWN Wayans OR anyother comedian black,white,red,or yellow NO FUNNY GUYS!!!

just watched it with my gf.

cheesy dialogue with a very weak story-line. snake-eyes was the true highlight, but his overall appearance was a little weird.

OK I saw this film and I am torn. So for the things I liked first.

1. Zartan- I love Arnold Vosloo as this character even though he wasn't in it much I think he portrayed him nicely. I also like how he gets his ability to change his appearance.

2. Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow- fight scenes.

3. Destro- Christopher Eccleston did a bang up job

4. The Vipers & The Elite Vipers

5. The Doctor- Yes I did like Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Doctor. If they make another I think he will do a good job as C.C.

6. The Technology- The night Raven and the S.H.A.R.C.s were cool
basically I liked the vehicles and I thought the under
water M.A.R.S. base was neat

Now for what I disliked
1. Duke- Channing Tatum is nothing like Duke will never
be anything like him. I actually don't understand why
this guy has an acting career. I have never liked a
single film I have seen with him in it. His
performance seems forced and he just seems to be
unintelligent.

2. Ripcord- Marlon Wayans needs to stick to what he is
good at, the Scary Movie franchise. Another thing
that has always really bothered me, why Ripcord. Why
not just make him Stalker. He is one of the originals
and a would fit in better with the story.

3. Some of Breakers Tech- I'm not going to say what but for those who have seen the movie I think you know which one I am talking about.

4. Dr. Mindbender. OK this is minor but would it have been so hard to shave Kevin J. O'Connor's head and give him a monocle and mustache?

Now for some things that really ticked me off


What I hated the most with the plot is the convenience of everyone already knowing each other. Duke in love with Ana. Rex being his buddy. Ana being Rex's sister. The Baroness and CC are Brother and Sister?! I say B.S. Duke saving Ana in the end and the nano tech in her head that brainwashed her to be evil. Come on couldn't she have been just a bad person and work willing for M.A.R.S. Just plain lazy writing. OK another sub plot that sucked. Snake Eyes and his reason for silence. Why does Hollywood insist on changing things when they ain't broke! This gets me so freakin' Pissy. So instead of Snake Eyes being disfigured and a mute during Viet Nam he is taking a vow silence, BLAH! Now I'm not saying it had to be Viet Nam it could of happened in Iraq in 1991 or 2003 or what ever. It would have stayed true to the source material. There should have been some kind of emotion shown between him and Scarlet as well. Not the half flirting attempts between Ripcord and Scarlet. These changes should have never been made and Larry Hama should have walked of the project because of the changes


I understand up dating a franchise but is it necessary to change the characters origins or just the character in general. Would you change Superman's origin? How about instead of Krypton exploding he is an escaped prisoner and he sees the error of his ways and becomes the protector of Earth. Look at Iron man. The movie changed a few things but they were minor and it stayed true to the source material. There is a reason why ARH has lasted over 25 years, because the back stories and it's characters. As much as I disliked somethings about the story I do have to say I liked this movie better than Transformers or Revenge of the Fallen. Even though I may disagree with what they did with the characters, they actually developed the characters.

These guys are too much! I agree the movie was crap but they are going overboard with the over analyzing. Also, that guy on the right is nuts if he thinks the special effects in ROTF were half as bad as GI Joe.

HATERS ALL!!!!! Plain and simple

I liked the movie. It made up for Revenge Of The Fallen. Sure the movie had it's flaws, but as one poster said, you just have to have an open mind. The chase scene and the Snake/Storm Shadow fights were awesome. Marlon didn't bother me that much as he wasn't that much of a Jar Jar Binks kind of character. I hate the fact that it seemed that everybody wanted to hate this movie and predict the worse. It's bad enough movie critcs wanna be partial when it comes to certain flicks. Not every movie has to be Lord Of The Rings, Brokeback Mountain or any Pixar flick especially since I don't like those kinds of movies. I think it's stupid people go as far as to complain about the Joe's costumes or Storm Shadow carrying a gun. Sheessh. It's really no different than anything Marvel puts out since half of those movies were pretty bad. Since you all predicted that GI Joe was gonna be bad, I predict that Iron Man 2 is gonna blow major chunks, but that's just my opinion just as you all have yours. That's my conclusion.

Yeah funny teabag. My only gripe was the Duke/Barroness/Cobra Commander relationship. They coulda done alot better with CC's origin although he had two different ones in both the 'toon and the comics. I don't know how audiences would cater to how a used car saleman would become a world conquerer. The relationshipe btwn Duke and Baroness was a little trifeling as I think they shoulda scrapped that and have her past more involved with Destro instead. It wasn't that bad a film as I enjoyed it and pointed out the parts I enjoyed. I though the chicks who played Baroness, Scarlett and Cover Girl were hot. The acting was decent if not the greatest, it was alright.

DUKE felt like an ackles clone to me an proper miscasted in JOE, as for script = tie!!!

JOE wins becoz ive been waiting donkeys years to see SNAKE EYES and STORM SHADOW on the big screen!

Wolverine didn't have worse effects! Remember in Joe when the plane is flying around Egypt or wherever the [frick] they were supposed to be? That looked like the bootleg cut of Wolverine BEFORE the finishing touches.

Ripcord was the stoned mother of GI Joe! ROTF really was better. For one, Shia Labouf has more acting ability in his little toe than Channing Tatum.

Just for the record, I never saw Wolverine knowing that movie was gonna blow and I'm not a fan of the X-flicks. I think people these days get ticked at critics for movies they wanna see. I think GI Joe is gonna be one of those movies movie goers will have a love/hate relationship with and will be the subject of debate for many years. So Ror, you don't like the movie, fine. But don't be condenscending toward guys like me and others who liked it if you really were expecting it to be up to the Ten Commandments kind of proportions. I dealt with that crap here before which is one the reasons why I don't post here that much.

First off, I'm not condescending to anyone. It seems to me that the fans of this movie are the ones that are getting pissed off just because there are people out there slightly more discerning than they are! I couldn't give a [frick] if you liked it or not. I'm just calling it like i see it. Second, if you read my review i said i had NO expectations of this movie and it STILL let me down.

All iask is that people give valid reasons for liking/hating it. Its annoying when you read someone saying "Oh well, the acting sucked, and the story was silly and it had bad special effects...but it still rocked yeeeeaaah" What the hell can you say to that!

I don't think it's about who's more discerning but more about taste. I stated my reasons, but definitely not how you put it. If I thought the movie was that bad I would probably storm off the theater like I did with Revenge Of The Fallen. There's always gonna be movies that's not gonna please everybody even to hardcore fans of the genre. There's always gonna be a couple things people won't be pleased with for some to condemn the whole movie. Those who wanna crucify people for liking a movie they hate, they have a real serious problem.

I agree..but it works both ways. All i have seen on any of the Joe threads are fans of the movie giving shit to those saying the didn't like it! I mean i have a bit of a laugh and joke slagging the fans off a bit, but I haven't called anyone an asshole or said i hated them! Both have been said to me because i put the movie down.

I called it. I said when this movie came out it would be transformers 2 all over again and here we are. People calling eachother names bashing the opposing sides. De ja frigen vu. And by bashing the other side I mean the people who liked it calling the people who didn't names and saying they were expecting Oscar caliber movie. The ones who didn't like it always seem to more respectful.

Rorsch lol. DBE is probably the only big summer flic I haven't yet seen. While I'd personally give Joe a 6.5 of 10(I have seen it twice now)It has its problems, but the big issues with it are Marlon Wayans and the puke-worthy CG. Many other things could be forgiven. Hell, Ill accept Channing as Duke if they get rid of Wayans lol.

Now that this movie is out, I can finally say it: TERMINATOR SALVATION WAS BY FAR THE WORST FILM OF THE SUMMER!!!

the mummy sucked...so i knew this wasn't gonna be that good. they should fire sommers. get a better director..better writers. change cobra commander's mask. change that wooden tatum guy. be more consistent with the CG. take out the accelerator suits. make more soldier like and less iron man slash transformers type.

O.K. folks I think I've found the solution into fixing this MAJOR disappiontment of the summer as stated by the masses here on CBM.com. As long as LEEE doesnt cast that CLOWN Wayans OR anyother comedian black,white,red,or yellow NO FUNNY GUYS!!!"

Thanks for the compliment man, I may be up to that later, but for now whenever I think of GI Joe, all I can see is Wayans ruining one of my favorite characters from the series, yes I actually liked Ripcord, even though he wasn't around as much as Snake Eyes. Wayans should earn an award for worst performance of the summer, he alone was enough to kill that movie for me.

I don't like casting comedians in action movies, but if they had to, couldn't they have at least gotten one that was actually funny, or could act? I mean we haven't seen Chris Tucker in a while, or maybe Dave Chappelle would come back. But no! We get one of the Wayans brothers, and not even the funny one!

But seriously though, if it was me casting for that role, I would have gone with Derek Luke. I hav yet to see a performance by him that was disapointing. Sure some of his movies weren't that great, but his performances have always been good. I look forward to more for him in the years to come. He is one of the few upcoming actors that I actually look forward to seeing in theaters.

My second choice would have been Tyrese Gibson, who got the shaft as far as far as lines go in Transformers 2, hell they may as well have just stuck this guy in both movies!

WAYNES didn't bother me, infact theres some light moments that he made that were really good, i have no idea why he wasn't cast as SLALKER though, with that tash he's a spitting image!!! But he did a good job, he was no way near as bad as ppl are BS ing about lol, he made quite a few scenes!!! TATUM was the only real bad casting choice, reminded me of Ackles too if he were to be in the AVENGERS, proper miscasting ppl!!!

GI JOEs CGI was mostly good and yes was twice the CGI as WOLVERINE but a couple of iffy bits, WOLVERINE had better acting as in SABRE an LOGAN, STAR TREK was a masterpiece, an coming from me, considering i h8 TREK with a passion, thats good lol!

GREEN LANTERN FIRST LIGHT should not even be in this poll??? If anything DRAGONBALLS should be here????

TERMINATOR 4 i really liked and is up there with TREK!

ROTF was a great POPCORN flick like JOE but skidsmarks and pot-mom with the quick battle at the end was a bit of a downer! But good entertaining movie none-the-less!

I wouldn't say though any of these movies are the worst of the summer, becoz DRAGONBALL is not even there, and i sat there watching it thinking well this ever end, it was truly bad! BRAGONBALLS BOOOOOO! ; D

I honestly would have preferred if they had put Stalker in this one and saved Rip Cord for a sequel, or at least wait and find a decent actor! But another thing that pissed me off was teh whole Scarlet/Ric Cord relationship thing, I was like What?

What I did like:

Zartan, i liked the way they did him, i felt his portrayal was one of the few saving points of the film.

And, well thats pretty much it... Damn.

What I didn't like, besides the film itself:

1. Snake Eyes 'Vow of Silence' What the Hell?!?!?!? I mean come on. No helicopter accident? I know they wanted to simplify it and update it, I would have with Storm Shadow sliting his throat, or a stray bullet hitting him, or maybe he just fell on his sword, or cut himself shaving, SOMETHING!!!!!

2. Baroness. I hated everything they did to her. She was probably the easiest charcter to translate on screen and she jsut got raped, group f*** anyone? The only thing I worried about with her was an accent problem, but that was just sad. They could not have done worse if they tried, wait I didn't ssay that, I forgot about which director was on it. The whole dumped at the alter and infected by nanites bit was painfull.


3. Cobra Commander. Wow, I am actually speechless on this one. I can not even think of an insult or a joke to make about this, it is that bad. I did like Levitt's performance, he was a good choice for the role, if the role and been witten better.

4.The nanites. It may have just been the reasning behind them that got me. They were capable of destroying a city and were alowed to be sold to NATO, let alone allowed to be manufactured.

5. Why did they try and make this a Duke and RipCord buddy movie?

@LEEE sorry I was typing while you posted that. Anyway I was one of them that were looking forward to this film, and I'm sad to say I actually liked
Dragonball-less better than Joe. And I have to see it again tommorrow...damn it.

Best comic films this summer:

1. Star Trek- I can honestly saw I have never seen the series, read a book or a comic, but I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

2. Terminator Salvation

3.Transformers: The Revenge of The Fallen

4.X-Men Origins: Wolverine

5. Dragonball Evolution

6. Gi Joe: The Rise of Cobra
