Just How Will THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Set Up Marvel's Phase Three?

There's no definite answer right now or anything newly rumored, but there's a major tease from someone with knowledge of how Marvel & Joss Whedon plan to end The Avengers sequel. Check it out

With Ant-Man set to kick off “Phase Three” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Doctor Strange likely to follow, the biggest post-The Avengers: Age of Ultron rumor is that the Incredible Hulk will be launched into space, leading to a Planet Hulk movie that would then set up a World War Hulk storyline in The Avengers 3. Though that rumor has been dismissed by Kevin Feige and outright debunked writer/director Joss Whedon himself, it could be consistent with the latest tease from HitFix's Drew McWeeny, who doesn't hide knowing more about Marvel Studios' future than us.

In a report covering last night's news that Johnny Depp has met with Marvel about Doctor Strange, McWeeny suggested that “Phase Three” altogether is going to be very interesting “because the end of The Avengers: Age of Ultron pretty much shatters what we know about the Avengers so far and who we know as the Avengers.” The journalist further teases that there are “some big narrative threads that will be left dangling” by Joss Whedon's forthcoming sequel and Marvel “playing those storylines out before bringing everyone back together for The Avengers 3 is going to require some very deft storytelling even as the larger world-building is going on.”

We may not fully understand everything until we actually see Earth's mightiest heroes reassemble on the big screen next year, but we can always speculate until then. One thing that's safe to assume is that the current roster will certainly shift by the end of the sequel. Meanwhile, though Drew McWeeny already confirmed that War Machine has a key role, MTV spoke with actor Don Cheadle at the Golden Globes last weekend and asked about his involvement with The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Apparently he would only give a huge grin; yeah, he's in. What do you think?

The Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, with Samuel L. Jackson and James Spader. The anticipated film is set to release on May 1, 2015.

I can't wait for the Antman, Dr. Strange, and Incredible Hulk 2 films.
jimoakley666 - 1/14/2014, 8:32 AM
Very doubtful.
SageMode - 1/14/2014, 8:33 AM
So the plot thickens.....
themidnightking - 1/14/2014, 8:33 AM
[frick] yeah! But what about Thanos?
Brainiac13 - 1/14/2014, 8:34 AM
I want to see more of the HULK.
JordanKing - 1/14/2014, 8:34 AM
A Planet Hulk followed by WWH movie would be immense to see realized on screen, however I wonder if this means we would have to wait even longer for Thanos.
BatManiac - 1/14/2014, 8:36 AM
I want to the Inhumans!
TheRationalNerd - 1/14/2014, 8:36 AM
Ant-Man (2015)
Doctor Strange (2016)
Thor 3 (2016)
Black Panther (2017)
Captain America 3 (2017)
Indestructible Hulk (2018)
Avengers 3 (2018)

Have Phase 4 be solidly cosmic related...

Inhumans
Ms.Marvel
Planet Hulk
Nova
Guardians 2

I dunno you guys?!

Joementum - 1/14/2014, 8:38 AM
Thanos would have the power to banish Hulk to another galaxy instantly. Setting up Planet Hulk Phase IV.
80sFace - 1/14/2014, 8:38 AM
Makes no sense. They're setting Thanos up as the Avengers 3 villain. How can it be WWH and Thanos. The "reporter" is using a lot of words to say nothing.
Tuuralihn - 1/14/2014, 8:38 AM
If something truly out of the blue happens at the end of Ultron, then I'll be really happy. We need to shake up the formula a little.
TheMexicanSuperman - 1/14/2014, 8:38 AM
@Brainiac3000, if only the Incredible Hulk made money, we would have had Incredible Hulk 2 in 2010.
SpiderParker - 1/14/2014, 8:39 AM
So what like SHIELD gets torn apart and Avengers start to doubt themselves and the system. Hulk rages on with the death of his girlfriend and they sent him to space while Cap and Tony argue whats right and break up the team only to have Civil Wars and THANOS in the 3rd movie? Hmmmm...
SuperSomething616 - 1/14/2014, 8:40 AM
I have a question...now that Henry Pym has been cast are we going to see a comic true origin for Ultron...especially as Pym is an older statesman...he could have been working on Ultron for ages...

THIS!!! would lead very nicely into Phase 3....what you guys think?
Jollem - 1/14/2014, 8:41 AM
sounds overcrowded
DCMarvelFreshman - 1/14/2014, 8:42 AM
@80sFace I tried to make that obvious in the teaser for this article. This is nothing more than a huge tease of what will happen. He mentions nothing about Planet Hulk or World War Hulk
kinghulk - 1/14/2014, 8:43 AM
i want to see hulk and iron man or maybe hawkeye share a movie in phase 3 or at least one of them have a large supporting role similar to black widow in iron man 2.
TheRationalNerd - 1/14/2014, 8:43 AM
@SS616

That's a good question man, I thought about that too. Like Pym already having blueprints established for Ultron's artificial intelligence years ago you know?
Jollem - 1/14/2014, 8:46 AM
“because the end of The Avengers: Age of Ultron pretty much shatters what we know about the Avengers so far and who we know as the Avengers.”

so far, we know that they like to bicker like divas
Dinotron - 1/14/2014, 8:47 AM
All we know for certain is at the end of AoU BIG things will take place
IcemanX - 1/14/2014, 8:51 AM
OMG, the Avengers are Skrulls :D
marvel72 - 1/14/2014, 8:52 AM
i reckon marvel studios will see how well guardians of the galaxy does, then they will announce the inhumans for phase 3.
themidnightking - 1/14/2014, 8:53 AM
If there is not a ounce of shit in my pants by the time I leave the theater, I will be sorely disappointed with this movie
marvel72 - 1/14/2014, 8:54 AM
@ jollem

the avengers did bicker a lot in the early years of the comics, especially captain america & hawkeye.
Desrow - 1/14/2014, 8:56 AM
So... El Mayimbe was right as usual... rofl to those marvelites who throw him crap because he say Marvel Studios are planning a WWH movie, now what?, it suddenly becomes good??, now it's different right?, BULLSHIT.
marvel72 - 1/14/2014, 8:56 AM
if the hulk steals the show again in the avengers,as he did for me & many others i think we could also another hulk movie.

what with him being my favorite character this would make me extremely happy.
kinghulk - 1/14/2014, 9:01 AM
desrow- we havent had any confurmation of a WW hulk avengers film, it's just fan speculation. i think we are more likely to get thanos first
AstonishingArachnid - 1/14/2014, 9:02 AM
Whedon did say that Age of Ultron will not have a happy ending and will end on a sort of cliffhanger.
AlexanderLykins - 1/14/2014, 9:02 AM
Planet Hulk and World War Hulk would and will flop. Someone save my post so we can revisit this later down the line.
Jollem - 1/14/2014, 9:06 AM
@marvel72 - i don't think they're ever not bickering :) makes for fun stuff
cosmicman - 1/14/2014, 9:09 AM
guessing Thanos as Starlin confirmed Thanos for both GoTG and Avengers 2
AlexanderLykins - 1/14/2014, 9:11 AM
I just don't get the reason for time travel. It's going to confuse the heck out of the general audience. I thought these movies were supposed to stand alone?
AlexanderLykins - 1/14/2014, 9:11 AM
I don't even know. At this point I'm so tired of worrying about them screwing up a great story to tell an idiotic one. If Marvel wants to blend all of these storylines together and mix and mash characters, then [frick] it!
kinghulk - 1/14/2014, 9:11 AM
jasonbourneCBM- thanks for posting that i hadent seen them until now, if he is right we are in for one heck of a film.
Owlman88 - 1/14/2014, 9:12 AM
sounds like they want to replace Iron Man after Avengers 3
DefcoN - 1/14/2014, 9:12 AM
I thought the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk storylines were pretty cool, but I prefer to see Thanos at the end of Phase 3 and have some kind of closure to what we've seen so far. After all, it could probably be the last time RDJ plays Tony Stark, so, yeah, good plot and I'm all for it, but it's a story for another time.
MrReese - 1/14/2014, 9:14 AM
Bet they disband when it's all said and done.
superotherside - 1/14/2014, 9:21 AM
I think it would be good to wait for the Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos can play a part in the films but making them hold off on the Infinity Gauntlet is actually a good thing. You don't want to rush it.
AlexanderLykins - 1/14/2014, 9:27 AM
Just so I understand correctly:

-No Black Panther.
-Time travel.
-Pym is Yellowjacket and a bad guy.
-Stark creates Ultron.
-The Mandarin isn't the Mandarin, he's a technodemon.
-Red Skull for Captain America 3.
-Planet and World War Hulk.
-Ultron army.
-Apparently the general audience needs to watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to know what's going on.
-Coulson could be Mar-Vell.
-We have Centipede, Hydra, A.I.M. and the Ten Rings.
-Iron Man 3 is just a ruse.
-The Mandarin will create and control Ultron.
-The time gem is causing the time loop.
-We're getting a Baron Strucker lead Masters of Evil.

I'm okay with some of this. But if a majority of this is true then Marvel Studios has gone Fox and Sony on us. I understand this is a new story and new events but it seems like a complete cluster[frick].
