Cleavage And Female Comic Book Characters

We all love a little cleavage now and then but does it really have a place in crime fighting? Well this artist doesn't think so and i agree with him.

By Selina Kyle - 10/6/2011
Yes, cleavage is exciting to look at but its quite ridiculous to have all these female comic book characters always leading with their boobs. And i am yet to see a male character fighting crime while wearing some very revealing pair of panties or speedos. Actually, i am quite sure i don't ever want to see that. In his new comic, artist Aaron Diaz explains to us why cleavage has no business in crime fighting. At the end of the day, its not practical and unless there is some type of super duper glue action going on, there is no way these ladies are not experiencing some type of wardrobe malfunction everyday.

Come on, we get the point, but.....come on!
theradioactivecore - 10/6/2011, 6:56 AM
This is true, however they look great just the way they are
MassExecutions - 10/6/2011, 6:58 AM
Umm... lots of them still wear capes, and THAT doesn't make sense.
jjmeylar - 10/6/2011, 7:00 AM
I love this article. It's smart, funny, and has sex appeal. It's like my woman!
Demonslayerwolf - 10/6/2011, 7:01 AM
If we really wanted realistic, would we really be into comics to begin with? You think the little wings on the flash's costume would actually stay on at that kind of speed? You really think the hulk would still have pants on after his change? Comics are awesome, and one big part of that is cleavage! Wounder Woman! Power Girl! Their cleavage is as popular as they are, don't take that away from us.
NorrinRaddical - 10/6/2011, 7:02 AM
i'm w Diaz and Selina here. everyone looks like an embarrassing implausible fantasy in comics, but the women are ridiculous. at times it even makes me a little embarrassed to even read it
NorrinRaddical - 10/6/2011, 7:04 AM
i don't see how little flash wing decals compares to constant portrayals that spill out and look like women were baking bread in a corset. yeah it's all fantastical and fun, but sometimes, jeez, just get a porno
skidz - 10/6/2011, 7:05 AM
It's certainly logical reasoning, but who said reason had a place in comic, anyway. It's not like they're going to get sucked into a jet engine like their cape wearing counterparts.
Demonslayerwolf - 10/6/2011, 7:05 AM
Wow, so Namor is swimming around with those stupid little wings? I am sure they are very aqua-dynamic.
dailycomicsfix - 10/6/2011, 7:05 AM
I COMPLETELY disagree with this persons conclusion!
Berger45 - 10/6/2011, 7:05 AM
What? Is this...is this a question? I don't... I just don't understand. What? Who??????
nuck82 - 10/6/2011, 7:06 AM
comic ladies with out boobs= less comic book sales
selinakyle - 10/6/2011, 7:08 AM
take that away? dude, just go buy porn. Yes, we all know comics aren't real but come on! My conclusion every time i see one of these women with helium boobs spilling out is that the artist has probably never felt a pair of real boobs and doesn't know how boobs work. Now, if we are talking about fake ones then yeah...those ones totally stay up with no support. And the heels...have you ever worn heels? I can sprint a couple of steps in 5 inches but crime fighting in heels? #stopsmokingthatshit
sasquatch - 10/6/2011, 7:09 AM
I understand it in non-powered vigilantes, but not for superheroes.
Non-powered heroes like Huntress use their skimpy outfits like batman uses his cape; to distract and confuse their opponents and give them the upper hand in a fight.
Of course, this is what happens when these women are drawn by men. Oh well...
Demonslayerwolf - 10/6/2011, 7:09 AM
I admit, I freaked out when I saw Lady Death for the first time, practically naked, that to me was way too much, or too little actually, but Wounder Woman, Power Girl, and many others can still show cleavage in a tasteful way, they don't always have to look like porn stars, or they just had a trashy boob job. In today's culture, I seriously doubt we will see much 'toning' down of any sex appeal. Too little too late. Good logic, good point on practicality, but sex sells, and comics are still a business.
MaddMonkk - 10/6/2011, 7:11 AM
I'd make them babes nekkid if I could. Then they would have no trouble apprehending any bad boys. it does make sense if you want to be realistic. BUT i like boobies so leave it alone.
Demonslayerwolf - 10/6/2011, 7:11 AM
Catwoman is wearing heels in The Dark Knight Rises, I thought that was a bit much considering, but it is what it is. Hope she don't break an ankle or something.
DrCKasady - 10/6/2011, 7:13 AM
i agree.
im a 21 year old man.
not a 12 year old boy.
im mainly reading the comics for the stories
i secondly look at the art
i've i want to crank one off, ill just go to pornhub or something.
and if the artists cover up the ladies a bit more in comics, that give them that much more fabric to make details in a costume.
skidz - 10/6/2011, 7:15 AM
Nephillim: Now, THAT's good reasoning, but it's still up to the discretion of the artist(s) involved. In the defense of the artists, though, not all of the are doing that. If you force them to change you risk reinstating crap like the Comics Code Authority. If you try to set a STANDARD, you might start a trend.
RorMachine - 10/6/2011, 7:16 AM
They aren't practical but neither are they going anywhere for one simple reason: Sex sells. In this case, cleavage sells. Always has, always will. We may not like it but trying to change it is like asking for the sky to stop being blue. Personally I agree with this article. One or two token "tarty" looking super heroines like Power Girl is cool because that's kinda her thing but in general their costumes should be as practical as the mens.
Dedpool - 10/6/2011, 7:21 AM
HILARIOUS!!! No one is actually saying this will change he's just making a point. And the way he did it is awesome!!
zippiesdrainage - 10/6/2011, 7:22 AM
An interesting point but I would be more satisfied if it was the view of the poster rather than stolen from someone else and agreed to by the poster.
EarOne - 10/6/2011, 7:25 AM
actually i agree with this. cleavage is TOTALLY unnecessary for female super heroes. other than making them vulnerable, it also makes em look slutty.

as LONG as we can see LEGS. a'ight...i don't care much for the breasts showing in a super hero costume, but, i want my gal crime fighters to show their looooong, luscious LEGS and i'm good ;-)
Emjeed - 10/6/2011, 7:31 AM
I think that female superheroes use their sexuality as a distraction
While someone is drooling over the cleavage they make their move
.. Look at the Arkham City Catwoman trailer.. She actually kissed a henchman
To distract him.. Lol .. Besides that's what kept us going back in the day
Before we started [frick]ing real girls..
BackwardGalaxy - 10/6/2011, 7:33 AM
Is it weird that I actually like the re-design of WW's costume at the end?
LFANCH - 10/6/2011, 7:34 AM
Namor has the skimpiest outfit in all of comics.
selinakyle - 10/6/2011, 7:36 AM
no you are not weird Backward. It actually looks good.
Shaman - 10/6/2011, 7:44 AM
If people start arguing about physics in superhero comics, then there is a major lack of "living the life" going on. Sorry but i'll defend cleavage in comics til my last breath! Why? Because looking at a pair of tits is enjoyable in EVERYTHING. Doesn't mean we necessarily whack off at the mere sight of them, but complaining because not all female superheroes aren't sporting "preacher's daughter" atires is flat out letting the best in life pass you by. Just saying, i'm sure you could be enjoying THINGS instead of losing all this precious time.

Take away tits & ass in comics and you'll just be paving the way for fat slobs and old grannies to be your new comic heroes. Why is that bad? Oh, only because HALF of the reason comics are enjoyable is because we like looking at the pages. And why we enjoy those pages is because they feature stuff that LOOKS APPEALING. Sex sells and very much so has a place in comics. That's the truth, deal with it.
selinakyle - 10/6/2011, 7:45 AM
oh please, spare me with the "living the life" meme. Yes, people have issues with it. Get over it. No one asked you to stop reading.
thalidomide - 10/6/2011, 7:46 AM
Just ask yourself.. What Would Teabag Do?
MassExecutions - 10/6/2011, 7:47 AM
Nuck has cut to the bottom line. $$.
soaponapope - 10/6/2011, 7:48 AM
really, a super-strong kryptonian who can shoot lasers from her eyes, and an immortal amazon with magical powers from zeus.... and it's their cleavage that compromises the character's grounds in reality?
skidz - 10/6/2011, 7:51 AM
Here's a possible solution (for the most part). MAKE THE COSTUMES MORE INTERESTING. Some of them are completely ridiculous(Wonder Woman) and have no practical value, and others are so BORING that sex appeal is about the only thing worth paying attention to. Costumes sales could skyrocket if more of them had an interesting wardrobe. I'm not trying to put DC on the spot, so don't shoot me. I just couldn't think of any offhand examples for Marvel women.
EpicMan - 10/6/2011, 7:51 AM
Yeah but what about BIG BOUNCIN BEWBAYS!!!!!

DetBullock - 10/6/2011, 7:52 AM
@NorrinRaddical: I agree.
Sometimes it is embarassing, just look at Ivan Reis' Star Saffire...
RunDTC - 10/6/2011, 7:53 AM
I think you're just jealous that fictional characters have more going for them than you do.
brewtownpsych - 10/6/2011, 7:55 AM
Gimme a break ... if u don't like cleavage don't buy it and quit ur moaning ... the ultra muscled heroes, capes and a million other things in comics are unrealistic so how is this different. Again, if u don't like iit, don't buy it. I like the realism sometimes, and I read the adult-oriented stuff for that. Christ, Y: the last man (maybe best CBever) had women w/ one breast cut off. Stop characterizing powergirls funbags as characteristc of ALL comics. Article was funny tho, but not to be taken seriously.
patriautism - 10/6/2011, 7:56 AM
The cleavage is necessary, perfect for distract criminals.
EpicMan - 10/6/2011, 7:59 AM
Here ya go Selina. Way more Tactical and functional

GUNSMITH - 10/6/2011, 8:00 AM
I WOULD BE PISSED IF YOU CHANGED CLEAVAGE
BigK1337 - 10/6/2011, 8:12 AM
Really? Showing breast cleavage isn't as bad as wearing a cape.
Universially speaking, most criminals in comics are males; and all men are suckers for boobs. Pretty much showing these awesome racks is more of an advantage than disadvantage when kicking criminals ass.

Capes, however, are the worse because . . .

Unless of course you are a god, alien, immortal or Batman; these things are more dangerous than showing off some teets!
BrutalDuke - 10/6/2011, 8:13 AM
I purpose we get a Power Girl outfit of good material mind you, Get Barbie Griffin to wear it. Then put her in a wind tunnel suspended on wires and we film it.
Shaman - 10/6/2011, 8:13 AM
SelinaKyle- You're the one incessantly bitching about one of the main things that SELL comics. Yes you have issues and yes you let them apparently run your life. Or else, i'm sure you could be doing something more constructive. But lo and behold, yet another article to bitch about something YOU'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO CHANGE in comics. Deal with that.

And let us all know if this site turns into "BitchComicMovies.com" so we can all leave for a better, less negative one where no man can be "accused" of having a penis, as if that was a bad thing. Put that in your [foo foo] and plug it. Nice tits, btw.
MassExecutions - 10/6/2011, 8:16 AM
Wait, does superhuman flesh that can stop bullets behave the same way as regular tissues? Also, what are there costumes made of? I think the aerodynamics argument may be invalid.
Stumblin - 10/6/2011, 8:17 AM
It boils down to style and editors. Alex Ross' women are more reality grounded than say Jim Lee's. Look how they draw men, to look like Jim Lee's drawings guys would have to roid a lot!

Also, editors have power to change women's design to show more sex appeal because sex sells, even in comics. My old professor Tom Lyle did a cover for Marvel featuring Black Cat, yet wasn't showcasing her usual cleavage, the editor made him change it to the low cut top because of the fact that sex appeal does sell more comics.

Basically, suck it up, it's the way of the world. Why do you think superheros and super heroines look perfect? It sells.
Stumblin - 10/6/2011, 8:18 AM
Amen Shaman!
selinakyle - 10/6/2011, 8:20 AM
waaaa waaa shaman waa waaa. Have a seat with your useless comment. Am i the only person in this article who agrees with the premise? No. Why you feel the need to go in on me is beyond me but i really don't give a shit. Bitch asses like you are a dime a dozen on this site so continue on your lil bitch fit. ;)
Last time i checked, no one was holding you hostage in this article to feel free to get the [frick] out my dear.
Greengo - 10/6/2011, 8:23 AM

MovieMaster - 10/6/2011, 8:24 AM
@demonhunter15- dude quit whining. you did this last time then got banned for it and then somehow you convinced big G to let you stay and you're doing the exact same thing.
Greengo - 10/6/2011, 8:25 AM
It boils down to some females being insecure with their bodies....

Which makes them feel that comic book art is too high/unrealistic a standard for them to be compared to here on CBM.
