EDITORIAL: The INFINITY STONE Theory

While watching Thor: The Dark World I noticed something in the library that intrigued me. After doing a little more digging, you won't believe the conclusion I've come to. Hit the jump to check it out.

As mentioned in the teaser, I spotted something while watching Thor: The Dark World recently. It was in the scene where Odin explains the Aether to Jane and Thor. Well, it was the shot where they're walking into the library, but you get my point. Anyway, floating in the library is a big projection of Yggdrassil, Tree of the Worlds. For a second I was just like, "well, that's fairly standard, I mean it is Asgrad." Then I noticed what drove me to write this. On some of the branches, there are large nebulae, of varying colours. I spotted a red, blue, yellow and green one, all of which just so happen to be colours of Infinity Stones. Upon taking further investigation, I noticed that the red nebula contains Svartalfheim, the world of the Dark Elves.

Now, you're probably thinking, "Yeah so, what's that got to do with the price of bread?" Thing is, the Aether just so happens ti be a Dark Elf creation and originates from within this red nebula as a result. The Aether is an Infinity Stone, the Power Stone by most people's perusal.

So, the link I'm trying to make here is that each Infinity Stone, may hold its origin in one of these nebulae, that is if there are any more. This isn't the only piece of evidence I found to link the whole thing together. During Frigga's funeral scene, the boat she is cast out on is burned. As it burns, a mass of green rises from it and ascends into a green nebula. Could this have a link to the Soul Stone? If that was Frigga's soul rising into the nebula, there is a possibility. Another possible piece of evidence is in the Avengers mid-credit with Thanos.

Notice the space clouds. They are mostly dark blue with flecks of purple. The Space Stone, which we know to be the Tesseract is something Thanos wants to get his hands on. Could he have gone to this purple region in an attempt to find and turned up trumps? Once again, there is a possibility. Yet I can give one more piece of speculative evidence. Believe it or not, it lies in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Now, you will notice that the nebula in the image is orange. The Time Stne is orange. If Red Skull was transported here by the Tesseract, it's possible he either encountered the Time Stone or the nebula has time travel capabilities. This can only be confirmed by McNyagano coming into this thread and saying, "Hmmm ;)".

So, what do you guys make of all of this? Could the stones draw power from these nebulae, or are the nebulae the point of creation for the stones? I guess we'll need a little more time to find out, but the evidence is certainly there. Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!

good spot! i'm of the thinking that each stone originates in a different part of the universe at the centre of each nebulae.

by your theory that would leave two nebulae to be seen/alluded to. one in GOTG and one in A:AOU would make sense
NovaCorpsFan - 3/7/2014, 6:52 AM
Pretty much, Doop. Wouldn't be surprised if we get a bit more substantial evidence for this with GotG. Hopefully if Redford's character is Red Skull, this theory has that little bit more weight to it.

Gusto if you let the Drinking Gem go, then maybe I'd factor it in there.

I'm thinking that the Soul Gem is with Adam Warlock. The green misty looking stuff that rose up from Frigga could just be what happens when powerful Asgardians pass. These people are gods, so I would expect something like that to happen when they die.

But in Thor 2 we see the Adam Warlock cocoon, and he has always been tied to the Soul Gem.

Another great spot Nova, I'd definitely be very impressed with Marvel if they've been hinting at this the entire time.

I think most people are agreed on the fact that the Aether is the power gem, but other corresponding colours for the gems have been more difficult to spot. I'd personally like a little more clarification on the Tesseract and whether or not it is the supposedly purple space gem.
CorndogBurglar - 3/7/2014, 8:43 AM
Lets all also think, I don't think these artifacts are the actual Infinity Gems, themselves. I'm thinking the gems are empty or lifeless, and these artifacts, the Infinity Stones, are going to be used to transfer their power into the actual stones to power them.
CorndogBurglar - 3/7/2014, 8:44 AM
Because they're obviously not going to stuff the Tesseract into the Infinity Gauntlet. Same with the Aether, lol
GliderMan - 3/7/2014, 9:16 AM
Why are you always stealing corndogs, you unAmerican piece of shit?
GiantNerd - 3/7/2014, 9:25 AM
Nice write up. I especially like the Time Gem theory and it's connection to Red Skull and how he may have traveled to the present day.
sikwon - 3/7/2014, 9:34 AM
One of the best things about Marvel is they constantly drop hints. "This is an origin story."
H3LLBLAZER - 3/7/2014, 10:00 AM
Wait, are the gems supposed to be like the dragon balls from Dragon Ball Z?
CorndogBurglar - 3/7/2014, 10:09 AM
@ Gliderman

Have you never eaten a corndog before? They're delicious.

Also, I'm American. Born and raised on the playgrounds where I spent most of my days.
CorndogBurglar - 3/7/2014, 10:11 AM
@ MarkoftheDemon

No. Because I can almost guarantee you that when Thanos collects all the gems, no giant, wish granting dragon will appear to bring all of Thanos' dead friends back to life.

Yeah, and when it came near, the license plate said Corn and there were dice in the mirror.

Nice write up, I like the idea of the Time Stone and Red Skull as well.
WYLEEJAY - 3/7/2014, 12:58 PM
@Nova. Hey! Where you been? I like this theory! Im gonna pay more attention to it in these next two movies. Thumbs up!

If anything could you tell that this cab was rare? Ah nah forget it, you probably said "Yo home, to Bel Air!"

great article!!!
Cali - 3/7/2014, 2:07 PM
It could be that each of the stones were scattered to different realms to keep them separate and the colors represent which realm contains which stone. I don't think it's going to be a "simple" as gems or stones though. I think you're definitely on the right track though. Great article! I rarely comment but this article got me thinking :D
DanteSparda - 3/7/2014, 2:30 PM
Awesome article man!

And talking about gems I still think the blue gem in Loki's staff in Avengers is the mind gem (I mean, is blue and controlled minds for Odin's sake), but I wonder if SHIELD has it or Loki managed to keep it.
DanteSparda - 3/7/2014, 2:42 PM
Also if Avengers 3 is based on the Inffinity Gauntlet story here is my guess of who owns each gem stone at the begining of the movie:

MIND GEM: SHIELD (If it was the blue gem in Loki's staff in Avengers).

POWER GEM: The Collector or the Guardians of the Galaxy.

REALITY GEM: Doctor Strange.

TIME GEM: If your theory is correct perhaps the Red Skull has it (or Ant-Man according to some rumors).

SPACE GEM: Loki (who could still be working for Thanos...)

SOUL GEM: Thanos perhaps, or maybe a character from an incoming movie like Black Panther.

Cheers for welcoming me back fellas, always bringing the funnies aren't you.

Just as a further expansion on something. Warlock shouldn't have the Soul Gem yet. I think it'd be better off him stopping Thanos then the gems are given to certain characters for protection.

I'm leaning more towards the stones drawing power from these nebulae as well as having been created there. Also, this could explain the stones' abilities to alter reality as their power source may well be a vast part of the universe.

I also think that the Mind Gem was in Loki's scepter, also, the place Thanos was was predominantly blue, so maybe they recovered the Mind Gem there, then sent Loki to Earth to recover the Space Stone.

Nice write up and great article.
Cyclops84 - 3/7/2014, 6:47 PM
I think Thanos was at that spot because that was the location of the SECOND Tesseract. At the very beginning of The Avengers Hawkeye told Fury that the cube was a door, and doors open both ways. I think Thanos used the second Tesseract to send Loki to SHIELDS base.
staypuffed - 3/7/2014, 7:20 PM
Interesting... it definitely could work.
npamusic - 3/7/2014, 7:30 PM
@CorndogBurglar the Gauntlet being empty and the stones being absorbed is the same theory Nova and I had way way way back. This is another interesting theory though, Nova! I enjoy your editorials.
Dakjaniels - 3/7/2014, 8:30 PM
I like it.

In the books the gems are the remains of an ancient and immensely powerful cosmic being who became bored and killed itself. Maybe its power/remains coalesced and formed into these nebula and the stones/gems/whatever are somehow able to tap into each nebula and control its respective properties (Time/space/power/soul/mind/reality)

dellamorte1872 - 3/7/2014, 9:14 PM
What I don't understand is it looks like GOTG have a blue gem and that up there is the mind gem which one would think is in the teseract . Which is definitely somehow encased in there. And the aether for THOR 2 is liquid encased in a stone like iron globe. What the GOTG should have in the posters is the orange space gem
dellamorte1872 - 3/7/2014, 9:15 PM
^purple
dellamorte1872 - 3/7/2014, 9:16 PM
Avengers 1 - mind gem
THOR 2 - power gem
dellamorte1872 - 3/7/2014, 9:17 PM
The soul gem is in warlock in a sense it is warlock
dellamorte1872 - 3/7/2014, 9:19 PM
Time gem can def be in a CAP film and that's orange and the last film before A3 can be DR STRANGE and have the reality gem that's a golden yellow
loki668 - 3/7/2014, 11:42 PM
I have been theorizing about this as well. From what I've gathered, it appears that the gems/stones are probably older than the universe itself (from what Odin has said about them). This could mean that they might be using Thanos as a "Galactus-type" being who is older than the universe. Each stone may have been the power that caused their specific "realms" to grow around them and, then be the power source utilized by the beings of those realms. It makes me wonder if the Casket of Ancient Winters somehow ties into this, or if it is just a very powerful artifact. Whether I'm right or wrong on any of this, it's going to be VERY interesting to see how this plays out.
