Top Ten Most Accurate Live Action Superhero Costumes

The stories might not have met our expectations, but the costumes sure did!
With all the talk about movie costumes lately, I wondered which are the most accurate? Not the most popular. Not the coolest. The most accurate to the comics at the time they came out. Well, why not make a list!

Though there have been many movies and TV shows that successfully update and adapt their character’s costumes to fit the story (i.e. Iron Man and Batman), those aren’t making my list.

My criteria are simple:

1) Stay as accurate to the mainstream source material as possible.
2) Translate well on screen.
3) There must be a person wearing the costume at some point; 100% CGI doesn’t count.
4) I'm only looking at heroes; not villains.
5) Impresses the hell out of me when I see it.

10) The Phantom

Campy and corny as all hell, but I still want this damn suit!

- Biggest inaccuracy I noticed: Silk screen skull on torso

9) Captain America

Sure this movie never made it to theaters. Sure I had to hunt the DVD down on Ebay. Sure many people gave it bad reviews. But I still flipped out seeing Cap in his full Red, White and Blue glory for the first time.

- Biggest inaccuracy I noticed: No scales on the shirt

8) Ghost Rider

Leather, check. Spikes, check. Flaming Skull, check. Motorcycle. . . could have been better.

- Biggest inaccuracy I noticed: No spikes on his belt or boots (which is debatable since GR wore several outfits)

7) The Flash (TV series)

This is one of my personal favorites. He looks like he jumped right out of a comic book.

- Biggest inaccuracy I noticed: Nose covering on the mask

6) V (V for Vendetta)

I never thought I'd see a hero that could freak me out more than clowns do. I was wrong.

5) Spider-Man

Though I’m not a fan of the movies overall, there’s nothing quite like seeing Spidey slinging webs through Manhattan.

- Biggest inaccuracy I noticed: Webbing pattern is a raised, silvery material. Also, no web shooters. Sure, it worked for the movie, but it wasn't in mainstream Spidey comics.

4) Hellboy

This whole get up could have gone wrong in so many ways: makeup, prosthetics, a big stone hand. . but it did just the opposite.

3) The Rocketeer

As much as I loved Donner’s Superman, The Rocketeer made me believe a man could fly.

2) Rorschach (Watchmen)

In theory it’s a simple costume: a trench coat, fedora and purple pants. But it’s all about the mask. And this one delivered flawlessly.

1) Superman (Christopher Reeve)

Whoever says spandex can’t be taken seriously needs to watch this movie ASAP.

That's where my list stands. I don't think I forgot one, but I'm sorry if one slipped my mind. If yours goes a little different, feel free to post it below. Remember, if we're going to try comparing lists, you should follow similar criteria. How much you like the costume has nothing to do with it; it's all about the accuracy.

Great list Multi!

I think my favorite would have to be Spider-Man. Though all of them are fantastic!

(First) ;)
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/15/2009, 4:22 PM
I get Batman not being on the list, sans the 60's TV show where the comics emulated the look of the show, but why couldn't Iron Man. The suit was ripped right out of Extremis.

I am going to agree with Tyler and say Spider-man is the best costume adaptation.
ZoloTalar - 11/15/2009, 4:27 PM
@ZoloTalar: How so? I compared the pictures and it didn't match up. Do you have ones that say different?

@Tyler: Spidey's was great, but the webbing change kept him lower on the list. Remember, I didn't list my favorites.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 4:30 PM
Great List Multi....that Cap outfit really gives me angina when I think of the new movie...
RedSkullGeezer - 11/15/2009, 4:30 PM
Good choices but yea could have put on iron man. Do villains too that would be awesome!
IronMarvel - 11/15/2009, 4:36 PM
Multi- Love it, but Iron Man should have been up there. I know it was CGI, but silver surfer looked great too.
ASSASSIN666 - 11/15/2009, 4:44 PM
@Multi- Great list! So many of my favourite tv/movie heroes are listed here. The Flash is still in my top 5 favs. If they make the suit like that for the film, I'd go Ape-S@#$. Hellboy was also a great addition to your list. Ron Perlman was the only man to play him... And he looked good while doing it. Oh, and the Rocketeer was one of my All-time favourite movies when I was a kid. Too cool, but now you must do a Villains list. :)
Magicfingers - 11/15/2009, 4:47 PM
What about Tom Jane's Punisher. He is the Punisher to me. Not a traditional hero with powers but still. My 2 cents not right or wrong, just an opinion...
Number21 - 11/15/2009, 4:56 PM
Spidey's might be the best, but it's not the most accurate. The spiders on the frond and back weren't accurate to the books, but I'll agree, his and Ironman's were the best iterations. Superman's is a little too easy. Personally I liked Swamp Thing, from Returns, not the first one.
Tobuttica - 11/15/2009, 4:56 PM
Flash's costume was pretty good. Especially for the 90's. The only thing missing were those yellow boots.....
Good List by the way.
groundrunner15 - 11/15/2009, 5:11 PM
@Tobuttica: Thank you! Sounds like you're one of the first to understand the rules :) did people forget what Spidey looks like in the comics? And at first I thought the same for Supes, but IMO it was definitely the most accurate for the time in came out.

Swamp thing would have been #11 or 12 for me BTW.

@Number21: You're comment really has nothing to do with the list, it's not a popularity contest. If you can find a Punisher comic picture that matches Jane's Punisher then it fits on the list (but the comic can't be based on the movie.)

@ASSASSIN: Iron Man isn't on there because none of the suits from the movies are direct adaptations of the source material. If you can find evidence to the contrary, let me know. The closest is the Mark I, but that one wasn't even that close.

Silver Surfer was great, but not accurate enough for the top ten IMO. The only time he was. . er, silvery, it was CGI
MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 5:13 PM
They did such a great job on Hellboy and Abe!
Nice article dude.
Spilox - 11/15/2009, 5:19 PM
excelling list. i would of though abe sapien would be here aswell. and hellboy should of got first for the sole reason on how difficult and teadious it was to become hellboy. thats prolly it. Superman rocks ass anyways. so all in all good list
wagonburner - 11/15/2009, 5:32 PM
good list!
scambune - 11/15/2009, 5:40 PM
I wish there was room for marv from sincity but hey that list is pretty damn tight. awesome job
lvlheaded - 11/15/2009, 5:43 PM
@lvlheaded: Sin City & Dick Tracy were accurate as hell to the comics. If the list had encompassed all comic movies, they would have definitely been on there. But I had to draw the line somewhere for these guys to be classified as 'superheroes'. V from V for Vendetta was where I chose to draw said line.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 5:46 PM
@Multi- Good place to draw the line, man.
Magicfingers - 11/15/2009, 5:54 PM
what about the xmen? no professor x or beast?

lee mitchell - 11/15/2009, 5:58 PM
@MultiPurpose, sorry did not mean to offend. Of the list I though Ghost Rider was pretty close to the comic. Sorry if my first selection offended the post...
Number21 - 11/15/2009, 5:59 PM
@Number21: Not offending at all, pal :) Just not fitting of the criteria. Like I said to Tyler, I didn't list my favorites.

@lee: Prof X's chair keep him off the list and so did Beast's makeup. It showed too much of Kelsey's face.

If anyone can produce a comic that matches Iron Man's suit (any of them) in the movie, I'll change my list around a bit. After an hour of searching, I couldn't find one.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 6:04 PM
@Poni@ great list man. however you did forgot deadpool from Xmen origins. just screwing with ya. and jeezus people read the freaking qualifications Ironman is my favorite superhero and i am not pissed that he wasnt on the list. professor X was pretty accurate but then at the same time how do you screw up a bald guy in a wheelchair the only thing harder to screw up is a wiseass mercanary with a serious diesease . oh wait nevermind. also blade should be up there along with the Tick. either way great list.
crazyish - 11/15/2009, 6:09 PM
@crazy: Thanks man! The Tick (one of my 5 fav characters) isn't on there because he didn't wear a mask on the show. Blade isn't on there because he just wasn't close enough to the comics (at the time)

I hope my individual explanations are good enough for you guys. Every character you all have mentioned were part of my looooooooong first draft (except Barakapool). I think I had somewhere around 40 names on that list. I have a definitive reason for not picking the ones that you all have asked about (with reference photos to boot), I didn't just post my favorites.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 6:14 PM
The list is pretty accurate, actually. Superman's costume, while not that complicated, is probably exactly why it wound up #1. Not complicated means you don't have to f**k with it, thus a perfect transition from book to film. Still my favorite after all this time. The costume designer probably just skipped that costume in favor of handing the tailor a comic book and saying "make this".

Rorschach's was flawless too. I loved it. It was literally the only one in the film not messed with by some over-zealous costume designer, and it's a good thing, because I personally feel Rorschach carried what there was of that film. I would have made him #2 as well, if only because Superman is a real hero in every single sense of the word, and if I could actually wish a superhero into existence, it would be him no question.

There's a poll idea for you Multi... If you could wish a hero into existence...
gtrman - 11/15/2009, 6:21 PM
@gtrman: DAMN! That was my reason for putting Supes first! Your ESPN thingy must be working tonight!

Great suggestion, I'll throw that poll onto one of my next editorials just for you :)
MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 6:24 PM
actually the hellboy outfit is inaccurate. he has cloven hooves in the comics and not in the movies. the upper part is correct but the feet are not
BlackAirs87 - 11/15/2009, 6:31 PM
@BlackAirs: I'll so glad you mentioned that! I saw one comic where Hellboy had hooves instead of feet, but I couldn't find any other pics. From what I remember of the two Hellboy movies, they always show him wearing shoes. For those two reasons, I went ahead and put him higher up on the list.

If you can find contradictory evidence PLEASE let me know where I can see it so I can update the list :)

MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 6:36 PM
Great list, Multi!

Here are my thoughts on your list:

10. Phantom: Pretty accurate, but did they airbrush in his muscles or what?
9. Captain America: Okay, pretty accurate, but those were not the actor's ears: they were rubber! Not so concerned about the scales b/c they were never prominent until the past decade or so.
8. Ghost Rider: Spot-on.
7. Flash: I loved the costume. I thought it worked exceptionally well for that show. I mean, it was basically a comedy-adventure show, so it fit.
6. V: Spot-on.
5. Spider-Man: I would probably put this one at the top of the list. I mean, c'mon, it's as close as possible to the original, yet it doesn't look cheesy at all. I liked the ribbed webbing; I thought it was an improvement on the comic design, which is basically sewn-on webbing. Disappointment: Black costume. C'mon, it didn't look anything like Venom!
4. Hellboy: What BlackAirs87 said.
3. The Rocketeer: Pretty good, but I always thought the helmet and backpack looked too cheap. You could tell they were plastic.
2. Rorschach: Great adaptation, but it shouldn't be #2 because Dave Gibbons, the original Watchmen artist, said that the mask was not made of gauze and that the inkblotches were not stains. Gibbons envisioned the mask as being three layers: the top layer is clear plastic, the middle layer is a pocket of air with some sort of fluid in it, and the bottom layer (inside layer) is another layer of plastic. Kind of like those ice packs that have the goo in the middle.
1. Superman: No one else could pull off straight spandex. Something about Chris Reeve just made you buy it.

Brent Sprecher - 11/15/2009, 6:36 PM
I agree in most part with your list @Multi!
Accuracy means exactly alike and Reeve's
Superman walked right off the pages of the
comics! It took Reeves to pull the spandex-
look off. He sold every part of Supes character!

But Hellboy should be no. 2 here not Rorschach.
Rorschach was not exactly accurate for the reasons
that Brent@ said above!

Fantastic article Multi@! :D

DDD - 11/15/2009, 6:48 PM
It would depend on the artist, but the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles should probably be somewhere on the list.
Same goes for the Mask.
hescian - 11/15/2009, 6:50 PM
@Multi: Great list! Linda Carter as Wonder Woman. You say Reeves did spandex justice. What about her?!?! Ooh, la, la!
Upupandaway - 11/15/2009, 7:00 PM
There all pretty close . #11 The Spirit
georgia49th - 11/15/2009, 7:05 PM
@Brent/DDD: I thought about that issue regarding Rorschach's mask, but in reality the comic mask Gibbons describes is impossible. It doesn't exist. That's why they used CGI. It would be like taking Hellboy off the list completely because his stone arm isn't really made of stone in the movie.

And Spider-Man simply CAN'T be #1 on the list because the movie costume IS different from the comics. Also, the web-shooter issue. I'm not picking favorites here or stating what worked for the movie, I'm taking about accuracy ;)

There were several helmets and backpacks used to film the Rockeeter, at least one set was made of metal. I know because I got the chance to see them in person :)

Regarding Hellboy, did he ever take his boots off in the movie? I don't remember if he did.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 7:13 PM
I totally agree with this list. Additions: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles no cgi, Dick tracy very accurate, Adam West's Batman and Robin and some of the Villians look iconic. Now the best adaptation was Iron Man.
Superman was better since it is just a spandex suit but Iron man is at least the second best.

I have some nominees for worst costume adaptations:

1-Shag's "Steel".
2-"Thor" from the Incredible hulk series
3-"Daredevil" from the Incredible Hulk series.
4 and 5-"Huntress" from the Birds of Prey series. The Black canary too.
6,7,8,9,10-"Black Canary" and the other Smallville characters. Look at Cyborg, Black Canary, Aquaman, and Green Arrow.
11 thru-17-"The Justice league" on that crappy movie, What happened there?.
Special mention-The Xmen trilogy, The outfits look cool but they are no adaptation.

RLG - 11/15/2009, 7:15 PM
What about Blade? That was a pretty accurate look.
hewilldefytheirgravity - 11/15/2009, 7:34 PM
The Rocketeer is one of my favorite movies. never knew it was a comic book.
Nice one.
MsKyle08 - 11/15/2009, 7:35 PM
maybe should put up some honorable mentions like ironman, marv, dr manhattan, the crow etc
lvlheaded - 11/15/2009, 7:38 PM
and there was a flash/captain america movie? lol..where have i been?
MsKyle08 - 11/15/2009, 7:38 PM
@hewilldefy: Blade was pretty accurate, but not enough to make the top 10

@MsKyle: It most definitely was a comic :) And my all time favorite! Flash was a TV series, Cap was a direct to video release in 1990.

@lvlheah: No thanks, you just listed some
MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 7:39 PM
is anybody watching The Prisoner on AMC?
MsKyle08 - 11/15/2009, 7:40 PM
HONESTLLY I LIKE THE NOSE COVERING ON THE TV FLASH, I THINK THE COMICS FLASH WOULD LOOK COOLER THAT WAY, HE SEEMS MORE SPEEDSTER TO ME THAT WAY
GUNSMITH - 11/15/2009, 7:40 PM
interestingly enough Ron Perlman was game for the hooves but they went ahead with the whole human feet. He DOES however have hooves in the 2 good animated films and those films have the BRPD cast returning, except that agent in the first one. i dont think these are canon with the live action movies. Another accurate one was the shadow, even tho that movie was horrible it was pretty accurate to the comics

BlackAirs87 - 11/15/2009, 7:46 PM
a quick note on costumes for KICK-ASS, all of them are not the same as the ones from the comics. Even Kick-ass's costume is altered due to the addition of the open mouth. Redmists is totally, Big-Daddy looks way better in the movie, and hit girl is still awesome no matter what
BlackAirs87 - 11/15/2009, 7:56 PM
cool article!!!! the fantatic fours costumes were accurate tho werent they?
FAD - 11/15/2009, 8:00 PM
I don't know how to post pictures yet, but check this out. She's spot on!
http://artfiles.art.com/images/-/Lynda-Carter-Photograph-C12146665.jpeg
Upupandaway - 11/15/2009, 8:05 PM
@FAD
The FF suits were really close (Thing was, well, perfect), but the suckage factor for the two films and the fact that the origins film was so way the heck off just kills it for me.

I'm sure I can't be alone in this sentiment.
gtrman - 11/15/2009, 8:09 PM
@FAD: According to the comics, the only thing they got right in the FF costumes was the color blue :/ I liked the updated look, but it was inaccurate.

BTW, I'm still waiting for that nurse pic (refer to my petition for details)
MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 8:14 PM
@MultiPurposePoni: Are you gonna do one for villians?
SHHH - 11/15/2009, 8:40 PM
I have to agree with hescian, what about the Ninja Turtles?
SlaughterHouse - 11/15/2009, 8:53 PM
Word, Ninja Turtles fo' shizzle

Great list. Now I'd like to see a top ten most INaccurate costumes. That'd be fun and challenging.

I mean challenging in the sense that it would be hard to decide which are the MOST inaccurate.
gibbyblaylock - 11/15/2009, 8:57 PM
Turtles dont count cuz they went CGI in the latest movie, also in the comics they all had the same color bands...the different colors for the cartoon and first movie(best live action cartoon movie EVER) was to show distinction amongst the 4
BlackAirs87 - 11/15/2009, 9:03 PM
gibbyblayock: Here's a start

SHHH - 11/15/2009, 9:08 PM
I can't figure out how to put pics on here.

Yes indeed SHHH!
gibbyblaylock - 11/15/2009, 9:08 PM
@BlackAirs, I'm not talking about the cgi TMNT movie. I'm talking about the first live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. And there are also a couple of volumes of the comics that had the four different colors. They were not always just all red.
SlaughterHouse - 11/15/2009, 9:09 PM
I'm really surprised at how many people can't seem to understand the rules for this list... You've got some serious patience Multi. Good list btw.
HeyVanity - 11/15/2009, 9:11 PM
Hows about this dude?

gibbyblaylock - 11/15/2009, 9:14 PM
Shhh, I think somebody's gonna have to start a new article for the MOST inaccurate because people are getting confused already

gibbyblaylock - 11/15/2009, 9:15 PM
what about Graphic Novel's..do they count..i know not many were made into movies yet but what about the Sin City cast, they all looked pretty much dead-on
BlackAirs87 - 11/15/2009, 9:24 PM
and i LOVE the Rocketeer. Its such a great movie....its such a great throwback to 30's action serials. Its full of action, romance, comedy, and drama. That upcoming game Dark Void is the closet thing were gonna get to an official Rocketeer game.
BlackAirs87 - 11/15/2009, 9:29 PM
do animated comicbook movies count? thats enough from me for this page...its such a great topic, full of debate and opinions
BlackAirs87 - 11/15/2009, 9:31 PM
@BlackAirs: The title states LIVE ACTION; ergo, no animated characters.

If you didn't read my comment above, I'll state it again:

"Sin City & Dick Tracy were accurate as hell to the comics. If the list had encompassed all comic movies, they would have definitely been on there. But I had to draw the line somewhere for these guys to be classified as 'superheroes'. V from V for Vendetta was where I chose to draw said line."

OSCURO: Read. . . the . . . article. Accurate. . . costumes. . . only

@SHHH: I already started the villains article. And I'll start the worst costume article tomorrow
MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 9:41 PM
@Multi: Your last few articles have received a lot of response and debate. Great job! I haven't gotten my Linda Carter Wonder Woman response yet, though!
Upupandaway - 11/15/2009, 9:52 PM
Spider-man costume in the movies is different. I like it and it does look enough like the comic costume but it shouldn't be so high on this list.

The icon on the back is different.
Michael Galusick - 11/15/2009, 9:53 PM
Multi

YAY! Worst costumes! Here's something to get you motivated:

The horror...
gibbyblaylock - 11/15/2009, 10:05 PM
@Upupandaway: Linda was a great Wonder Woman! But, alas, not accurate enough for the time to make the list. They actually modeled the late 70's WW's costume after Linda's.

@gibby: Don't forget Green Lantern and his dildo construct ring!
MultiPurposePoni - 11/15/2009, 10:08 PM

Jesus, the JLA movie was such a friggin' suck-fest. Flash and Atom look like they can't wait to get home and make big hoagies and take huge dumps. I remember GL's ring being the most useless thing on earth. Ironic he's one of the most powerful people on the planet.

And speaking of worst costumes...

Upupandaway - 11/15/2009, 11:08 PM
Blade's costume was way off even the weapons he used in the movie wasn't even close to the weapons he used in the comics....
georgia49th - 11/15/2009, 11:13 PM
I love SpiderMans's organic web shooters. I always hated the wrist rocket idea cuz of the propulsion system. I can buy the flexing of muscles and an organic web much easier and its just sooooo cool too.

Has anyone notice that Whaterver-ine : Borigins isnt even being brought up in this list. And Dead Pool ... oh the shame of it!

Spider Man was my favorite movie suit by far.

But Hulk nailed the look and feel perfectly. So Hulk Smashes in my book !')
shibazz - 11/15/2009, 11:43 PM
I'm glad they did this list. There's a new trend to these superhero shows/movies were the character dresses in plain clothes. Can we get a flashback training scene where Wolverine's wearing the full yellow and blue? A move like that might of won the fans over. How about Batman not wearing rubber? How about Clark finally puts on the suit, the real suit? If we need plain clothes to make it realistic, don't make it realistic. It is all fantasy after all.
bbguy - 11/15/2009, 11:48 PM
gibbyblaylock where on earth did you find those horrific and disturbing pictures.
Ghola - 11/16/2009, 12:05 AM
MultiPurposePoni, I thought that in some cases Spiderman DID have organic webbing, like in the movies.

Although Wikipedia isn't the 100% most accureate it did have this: "Some of his comic series have him shooting webs from his wrists.[32]" So it all depends on what version you were also comparing, too. You may think that it violates rule #1, but I remember in quite a few of the issues that I'd read when I was growing up.

P.S. Awesome article. If you also do one for the most INaccurate costumes I'd like to nominate X-men (ALL of them) for #1. Black (p)leather just sucks. If you also do one for miscasting I've got to say that Jackman's 6'4" Wolverine is just horrible.
necrosage2005 - 11/16/2009, 12:06 AM
Multi @ great article ....the only issue i have as a Ghost Rider purist is that the movie was about Johhny Blaze....But showed the Danny Ketch Ghost rider...so i dont think they were being accurate with Blazes origins :P

But thats me being picky ...good stuff :)

Spiderman / Flash are the best, although i do like the Guyver suite in Dark Hero :)
teabag - 11/16/2009, 2:10 AM
I was glad you put ghost rider in multi I thought he was spot on and agree 100% on the spider man inaccuracy, the raised webbing on the suit brings it down a few notches
Great article
scarface - 11/16/2009, 3:11 AM
@Multi....great concept, list, and criteria.

My honorable mention would definitley be FF's the Thing. From the last movie, and the crappy one from the 80's that got made last minute before Marvel lost the rights to it. Got it on a DVD from EBAY, and thought the Thing was very good, especially working with what they had for the time.

One of my favorite anti-hero's is the Mr. Hyde character in LXG. The actor, the suit, the makeup, and the animitronics......just awesome.

Wouldn't mind seeing a movie with just that character.
SkunkApe1 - 11/16/2009, 3:18 AM
Multi baby hellboy had normal feet I know these are action figures but hey its the best I could do
Hellboys
breakUbatman - 11/16/2009, 4:48 AM
Superman is the most accurate, the fact that no one has an inaccurate point of view on it says it all. Yes Spidermans was cool and close, but if your gonna mark Hellboy down for not having hooves or ghost rider for not having a few spikes in a few extra places then it's no suprise that Spiderman is'nt on top. Just look at the pictures people, there is no debate, Superman beats all.

Multi @ Nice concept dude.
theFACE - 11/16/2009, 5:10 AM
@ everyone

the xmen DID wear leather for a while, AND the costumes were very well received. because they were a LITTLE more realistic.

my point is, we've seen costumes get massacred a lot worse than the x-men movies.

CorndogBurglar - 11/16/2009, 5:47 AM
The Spiderman costume was good, to good- by the explanation in the film, he made it himself. how did he manage to make this costume, a poor student with no latex crafting skills. Batman begins explains the money and efforts that goes in to make a superhero costume without being detected. Fail for Spiderman!
Johnny K - 11/16/2009, 5:52 AM

o and i signed ur petition...hope it makes a difference!!!

XmutantX - 11/16/2009, 6:21 AM
I'd say this list is pretty good.

@slaughterhouse- TMNT doesn't qualify because the original turtles all had red bandanas.
AxlKomix - 11/16/2009, 6:34 AM
Dick Tracy, The Shadow, DareDevil, Spawn & Wonder Woman all seem pretty accurate, what's did you see wrong there Muti?

You NEED to do a villian list now, your insights are pretty good, outta your list V has to be number 1, closley followed by The Rocketeer.
kaos - 11/16/2009, 6:37 AM
where is iron man
thedarkknight666 - 11/16/2009, 7:28 AM
@necrosage: Spider-Man didn't have organic webbing in his mainstream comics at the time the movie came out. Read the criteria.

@XmutantX/kaos: Here goes -

- Original TMNT comics of that era had them wearing red bandannas.
- Blade was very inaccurate to the comics
- Punisher (Jane's and Stevenson's) wear pretty far off from any Punisher comic.
- Dick Tracy doesn't fit the 'superhero' criteria (see one of my above comments)
- The Shadow was disqualified (in my eyes) because they used a separate actor to play the two personas. That's cheating. Might as well have been all CGI. His pistols were different from the magazines as well as the colors under his cloak.
- Spawn was not accurate at all.
- Wonder Woman (see one of my above comments)

@darkknight: Not on the list.

Read all the comments about it above and your questions will be answered.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/16/2009, 7:32 AM
GREAT list, Multi!!! I agree with your reasonnings but IMHO, we'd have a three way tie between The Shadow, V and Chris Reeve's Superman. If we are truly to put "preferences" aside, you can't have one single winner. As for your disqualification of The Shadow, Lamont always had the ability to cloud men's minds hense the two actors. There's no CGI involved at all except the very sequence of change. It's not cheating. In that case, Ghost Rider and Rorschach are ultimitely disqualified.

Can't wait for your other lists though ;)
Shaman - 11/16/2009, 8:13 AM
@Shaman: That was a hard call for me to make. I loved The Shadow magazines as well as the comics. The actor change plus the pistols and the color scheme didn't get him on the list. In 20/20 hindsight, I could have replaced Hellboy with him, though.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/16/2009, 8:20 AM
Hmmmmm... good points ;) It's been a while since i watched the film. No matter how bad it is, it still makes my top 10 CBM faves LOL :P

I voted for "V" in the poll cause, it's pitch perfect as much as Chris Reeve's sups IMO :)
Shaman - 11/16/2009, 8:34 AM
MultiPurposePoni, you didn't say "at the time the movie came out" in your critieria.

"1) Stay as accurate to the mainstream source material as possible." Its rather well known that Raimi liked the classic version. That is part of the reason why he didn't like Venom. He was only shoe-horned in to appease us, the fans. That is why he felt so out of place.
Anyway, for some strange reason I seem to also remember that right around the time when he became Man-spider he had organic shooters, too.

Either way, cool list. Wasn't trying to rag on you.

CorndogBurglar, everybody that I know said that the artwork, story, and costumes in New X-men SUCKED. I don't know who said that they "were very well received."
necrosage2005 - 11/16/2009, 9:03 AM
@multi
haha picky picky picky...
well 2 can play that way...1st the phantom was a lame character and a lame movie..and his costume was simply purple spandex..how is that impressive?...2nd...captain america is missing one of his key costume points...his scales...u sdmitted this urself but still put him on ur list..not exactly sure y u would disqualify the turtles but keep cap...same difference...and superman...yet again an easy and unimpressive costume 2 replicate 2 film...hell if we're gonna pick reeves..we might as well put Dean Cain on there 2..same figgin costume u can pick up at any iparty lol...
ghost rider was cgi
and the rocketeer seems 2 fall under the same catagory 2 me as dick tracy...they both were close 2 the sorce material...only dick tracy was more cbm style!
Jane and stevensons looked jus like bradstreets illustrations which happen 2 be the punishers most reconized work..
and blade did look the same as Howard Chaykin's run on the blade books...

XmutantX - 11/16/2009, 9:04 AM
Great article MULTI.

Costume accuracy isnt the end of the world for me as I accept that they sometimes have to make changes inorder for them to work in the real world. However, its always great to see the exact same costumes from the comic books translate well to the big screen!

I just hope that in the next X-Men movie we get costumes similar to the Astonishing outfits rather than the generic black leather!
JoshW - 11/16/2009, 9:13 AM
@necrosage: If you read one of my first comments, it says I based the decision on the costumes from the time the movies came out.

@XmutantX: You don't have to agree with the choices. But it's a good idea to read the article AND the comments because you're not really making any sense.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/16/2009, 9:15 AM
@multi, While the Mirage Studios volume going at the time had all red bandanas the Archie Comics volume of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had the four different colors. The Archie comics started in '88 so wouldn't that qualify as being an accurate representation of the Ninja Turtles in the live action movie?
SlaughterHouse - 11/16/2009, 9:32 AM
Multi@ whats the differance between Wonder woman not qualifying and the Wrong Ghost Rider making the list? :P
teabag - 11/16/2009, 9:43 AM
MultiPurposePoni, guess that I missed that part. My apologies. You may continue with the good articles now... ;)
necrosage2005 - 11/16/2009, 10:02 AM
Great List Multi. I especially like the point you made regarding Superman: "Whoever says spandex can’t be taken seriously needs to watch this movie ASAP."

Nuff Said!

niknik - 11/16/2009, 10:40 AM
@ necrosage

you're friends aren't the entire comic community. hate to break it to ya, but from message boards at the time that series was out, it got a LOT more praise. if it sucked so bad and everyone hated it so much then why did that run last as long as it did? he wrote New X-Men #114-#154. 40 issues! thats almost 4 whole years of comics. do you think if everyone hated it, it would stay around that long?
CorndogBurglar - 11/16/2009, 11:11 AM
awesome list, but what do you say about elektra and fantastic 4?
Mileena16 - 11/16/2009, 11:30 AM
@Mileena: Elektra was too far off (The leather pants and corset) and like I said before, the FF uniforms only resemble the comics because of their color.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/16/2009, 11:54 AM
I figure I'll mention it again, but there were TMNT comics with the different coloured headbands before the movie. I hated that change, personally, but it was there.
Also, no comment on the Mask?

Lastly, the Legends of the SuperHeroes was sooooo good. I remember that when I was a kid, and when it came on television, it was the greatest thing ever. The intro's of each character was excellent. And as far as I'm concerned, every actor playing a superhero (with a few exceptions) should be built like that Hawkman.
hescian - 11/16/2009, 12:50 PM
@multi
hey man if u cant take constrctive critisism..than u shouldnt make posts...unlike most of these ppl i gave my opinion and backed it up with facts...i didnt jus say "agree" or "disagree"...i think ur the one not making any sense..(@hescian's tmnt comment kinda proves it..along with all of mine)..if ur gonna disagree with what i say atleast back it up with facts like i did...dont jus say "ur not making any sense"....thats dumb
dont dish it if u cant take it is all im sayin bub

XmutantX - 11/16/2009, 2:11 PM
the best for me is between the new batman suits and ironman but from this list is between spiderman and hellboy
flames809 - 11/16/2009, 2:24 PM
Wow... I feel completely ignored in this post lol.

I, along with hescian have brought up the Ninja Turtles a couple of times, and like I stated before the Archie comics that started in 1988 featured the four different color headbands. This was 2 years before the movie came out. While this isn't the original Eastman and Laird versions of the Ninja Turtles it was another interpretation done around the same time the live action movies were.

To me I can't see why the Ninja Turtles should be excluded from this list. The Jim Hensen Creature Shop did a great job on those costumes, and while the lips weren't always fluid, I think they are definitely top 10 quality for accuracy. They are just as good as the Hellboy costume.
SlaughterHouse - 11/16/2009, 3:16 PM
Still luv ds

ww1
Gose - 11/16/2009, 3:20 PM
@ slaughterhouse

okay, TMNT should be there. do you feel less ignored?? it isn't going to change the list, buddy. :)
CorndogBurglar - 11/16/2009, 4:20 PM
also, he explained pretty clearly, these are HIS picks. the article isn't: "Every Single Faithful Costume in the History of CBM's"
CorndogBurglar - 11/16/2009, 4:24 PM
@corndog, No need to be condescending. This is a post about what we think are the most accurate comic book costumes as portrayed on television or in movies. Sure multi made the first list, but that by no way means we can't debate other possible costumes. Obviously I belive that the Ninja Turtle costumes deserve to be a top pick and would like to hear multi's opinion on it given the Archie Comics information.
SlaughterHouse - 11/16/2009, 4:37 PM
@ slaughterhouse

my bad man, not trying to be condescending. there's just a lot of people throwing characters and names at him. there have been a lot of costumes that are faithful. hell, those videos gtrman posted were faithful (as much as i hate to say that, lol).

i just know after posting a few articles of my own, that its really irritating when people start saying you're list should have other things on it. its multi's list. thats all.

but yeah man, no hard feelings.
CorndogBurglar - 11/16/2009, 5:01 PM
@Slaughterhouse: I'm not ignoring you bud, I already answered this awhile back.

The TMNT live action movies were based on the Mirage comics, not the Archie ones. Since the source material for the movie had all their bandannas red, the costume transition was inaccurate enough not to make my list.

MultiPurposePoni - 11/16/2009, 8:46 PM
@multi, I don't see how you can say the movies are soley based on the Mirage comics when the bandanas are different colors, like in the Archie comics, and in the backround for the story it features Oroku Saki as part of the love triangle, like in the Archie Comics. In the Mirage comics it was Oroku Nagi. So to be fair I'd have to say they pulled from both.
SlaughterHouse - 11/17/2009, 10:18 AM
@Slaughterhouse: They did pull from both, but it was based on Mirage's take first and foremost. That is why they are not on my list. If yours is different, cool. But they didn't make mine.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/17/2009, 11:20 AM
I have read most of the posts on here but over two days. Has anyone mentioned Spawn? I did not read the books but they guy in the movie looked allot like the guy from the covers.

Great lists. I cannot wait to see the rest "worst hero" or best "villian". I understand the worst hero one is hard and I do not want you to lose your eyes, so how about just start it with no list and have everyone rant and rave about their opinions. For me the winner is the '77 Capatain America for worst hero, just to plant the seed (although any 70's-80's avenger would count i.e Hulk, Thor from Hulk, etc).
STOOPUDR - 11/17/2009, 4:26 PM
pretty darn good picks. its tough cuz so many to choose from. maybe you should make a top 100 list!

will probably get my head bitten off for this one, but what about daredevil? i KNOW it was a reeeally crappy movie, but DD's costume was pretty well done, i seem to recall... or are we just gonna pretend that movie never happened? maybe that *would* be for the best...

hey how the heck do u post pictures on here? was gonna post an old pic of blade from the comics, really nothing like the movie at all!
