Idris Elba Joins the Cast of Thor

Which Asgardian will he portray in Marvel's comic adaptation?
Heat Vision has just revealed that Idris Elba will play Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard.

Heimdall is the all-seeing and all-knowing brother of Sif (portrayed on film by Jaimie Alexander). He stands on the rainbow bridge, Bifrost, watching for any attacks on Asgard.

MPP - Now, I'm ok with updating roles to fit certain aspects of a movie, but I don't see much resemblance between Idris and Jaimie. If this information is true, and they will portray brother and sister, I'm hoping for a bit of an explanation or re-tooling from Kenny B.

UPDATE: Marvel confirmed the casting of Idris Elba as Heimdall on November 20th.

I never would have thought of him, but I really like the actor, so I'll roll with it.
kenny38606 - 11/19/2009, 10:22 PM
Yeah screw it, he's a minor character, and Elba is the dogs bollocks:)
RorMachine - 11/19/2009, 10:34 PM
I can see the resemblance...

Oh yeah and....

DAVID WENHAM for BALDER! ; D

i really wonder how important the side cast are going to be in this movie. the warrior's three, sif, you KNOW enchantress will be in it (and she BETTER be smokin' hot!). but we've all heard that about 80% will be in asgard, and 20% in earth's realm. there's no way they will be able to flesh all these characters out, while juggling Thor AND Loki AND frost giants. i have a feeling the side cast are going to be kinda weak.
CorndogBurglar - 11/19/2009, 10:49 PM
CORN @ Like ive always said, this baby is gonna be The Lord of the Rings of the Superhero movies!!!

EPIC!

How do you post a picture in your comment?
kenny38606 - 11/19/2009, 10:53 PM
good to see a black guy in a comic book movie for once and not some fat black guy in spiderman movies lol
luffycapri - 11/19/2009, 10:55 PM
@kenny: Upload your picture to your CBM Picture Gallery. Then copy and paste the 'Embed' code to your comment. Hope that helps

@luffy: What fat, black guy are you referring to in the Spider-Man movies? Robbie?
MultiPurposePoni - 11/19/2009, 10:55 PM
He was really good in "Rocknrolla". But I'll file this under WTF. Although, I can imagine a guy picking up a heck of a tan sitting on the Rainbow Bridge all that time...
Ugh - 11/19/2009, 11:00 PM
For those of you still wondering if Anthony Hopkin's Thor casting is just rumor, check Marvel.com's Thor site. It now lists him officially cast as Odin!

Sorry LEEE, time to put away the Brian Blessed photos ;)

@ luffy

did you miss daredevil?? they had a black guy play a white guy in that...hey a LOT like this!

and don't forget these

and

and

yeah, i guess black people have gotten the shaft in the super hero department, lol

CorndogBurglar - 11/19/2009, 11:13 PM
@ LEEE David Wenham is an awesome actor. Loved him in LOTR. Loved him in 300. Hell, he could play a wall in a movie about watching paint dry & I'd probably go see it.

As for Thor, I can't wait to see it. I really do hope it's the LOTR of comic book movies, but we'll wait & see.
Runefyst - 11/19/2009, 11:16 PM
Weird casting, but I know he did good in The Wire. We'll see

Here we go again Im sure they could've found a big buff white guy to play Hemidall. Come on I hate when they do this someone mention they changed the Kinpin in Daredevil...they shouldnt have. When or if they do come out with Cage is he going to be some small asian guy? Listen Im down for some brothers getting parts on the big screen especially in my superheroe movies...surprise Im a black man that likes to see other blacks on screen. I just dont want to see them misused I dont want a black superman, batman, flash, lex luthor,or spiderman.
Why dont they just bring John Steward GL,Luke Cage,Black Panther,Black Lighting,ICON,AND A FEW OTHERS TO THE SCREEN.Hollywood seems to be having enough trouble as it is getting uniforms, storyline, and properly casted actors in place for most of our movies. They're adding a new wrinkle changing the race of a character that has no background to support it(source material). Sounds like they're already screwing with THOR and they havent even let the ink dry on the script.
BLADE4040 - 11/19/2009, 11:34 PM
RUNE @ Heck yeah!!! ; D

MULTI @ Im cool lol, poor poor BRIAN, shame lol!

KENNY @ Dude if ya cant work it out, try PHOTOBUCKET its easier, just follow the step by step.

CORNDOG @ Damn man, i hav'nt seen HANDI MAN b4 lol, the other ones classics!
LEEE777 - 11/19/2009, 11:41 PM
@BLADE: I'm with you there. A studio shouldn't just change the race of a character because you want a diverse cast, there needs to be a valid reason for it. If Kenny has one, I'd love to hear it.

Alot of people always talk about staying faithful to the source material, but they don't want to speak out about race-driven casting. You're a good man, Charlie Brown :)
MultiPurposePoni - 11/19/2009, 11:47 PM
MULTI @ SLJ's FURY is [frick]ING crap!!! ; D

BRUCE WILLIS all the way, classic FURY!
LEEE777 - 11/19/2009, 11:50 PM
CornDB: Did you really have to post those pics....lol.

My list of Black Superheroes to do well or not on T.V. or big screen.
BLADE- they're not giving us much so how about BLADE4

Mantis-he was cool as long as he didnt get wet(SciFi channel)mid-late 90's

Steele- GARBAGE

The black werewolf in underworld with the thunderous voice-Cool should do a movie surrounding his character.

WarMachine-next IRONMAN movie dont like Don Cheadle for the part I seen HIM try to do action-terrible.

Cyborg-smallville he sucks

Storm-find someone to actually capture who she is and to a team-up with Black Panther. She was O.K. in the X-Men movies and Im begining nice ,because Halle is SO FINE.

Hancock-I liked that movie.... KINDA. I'd like to see a part two make it a little darker and have him mix it up with a demon from HADES.
BLADE4040 - 11/19/2009, 11:58 PM
"@BLADE: I'm with you there. A studio shouldn't just change the race of a character because you want a diverse cast, there needs to be a valid reason for it. If Kenny has one, I'd love to hear it."

I honestly don't believe they have a reason for changing the "race"/physical appearance of the character, other than he was the actor they wanted for the role.If this were some random studio picking this actor, it might be a different story, but it was Marvel's choice and this is their character, so I'm gonna have to believe they know what they're doing.
kenny38606 - 11/20/2009, 12:03 AM
Awww I wanted him for Luke Cage, oh well and I agree Kingpin shouldn't have been Black especially when you can pull of the illusion of size in films like LOTR and Green Mile. Give me James Gandolfini as Kingpin
breakUbatman - 11/20/2009, 12:10 AM
MultiPurposePoni: I think most people dont say anything because they dont want to rub the sensitive people the wrong way. Like how our President isnt calling his christmas tree a christmas tree, but a holiday tree because he doesnt want to offend anyone.... again the sensitive people. We're becoming a NATION of wimps and crybabies....we just need to do and say whats right and fair concerning our CBM's. Just make them RIGHT and true to the source material I understand Wolverine running around in yellow spandex just wouldnt look right on screen. Well a white Black Panther and a Black THOR doesnt cut it either.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 12:11 AM
This is somewhat disappointing if Idris Elba's actually going to be Heimdall. I have nothing against Elba, but playing one of the Norse gods is not a good fit.

We're not talking about changing the race of a character that's been around for 40 years, like Kingpin or Nick Fury. We're talking about changing the race of one of the Norse gods, who are still worshiped in some circles on the globe. And even if you don't want to acknowledge that part of it, we're still talking about changing the race of a mythological deity that's been around in sagas for well over a thousand years. It's completely unnecessary if they're adding diversity for the sake of adding diversity.

This one might be well on it's way to bothering (or downright offending) people outside the comics world, much more than changing the race of the Kingpin (which I was grudgingly okay with) or Nick Fury (which annoyed me). This is much more far-reaching than just what comics fan boys want, and the issue probably needs to be examined a lot more.

Oddly enough, as I started reading this article, thunder and lightning started outside. A coincidence, for sure, but still not a good omen... >.>
TheDemonHunter - 11/20/2009, 12:11 AM
IMO there are only several ways this casting would make sense without using the 'he's an Asgardian, they all look different' cop out:

- Don't portray Heimdall and Sif as siblings. Have him come from a neighboring civilization like Hogun.

- Don't show the character to be any race at all. Use CGI to make Heimdall's face appear to be an 'astral void' like some of the images in the new Thor comics.

Besides those two options, it'll just seem out of place to have one black Asgardian in the mix with the rest of them.

@Demon: Diversity for the sake of diversity. I sure hope not
MultiPurposePoni - 11/20/2009, 12:12 AM
Most of HOLLYWOOD don't give two sh1ts about source material or fans, best we can do is hope for the [frick]ing best!!

[frick]ing Hollywood! I blame you ARNOLD! : D
LEEE777 - 11/20/2009, 12:13 AM
breakUbatman: you might have something there with him playing CAGE he's a good actor nice build. Yea I can see that(HIM PLAYING cage). You ever see the movie Daddy's Little Girls? He shows alot of range in that movie...I've seen him in a few other things as well solid actor
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 12:18 AM
@BLADE. Damn fine points my friend, and I agree.

Oh and the Werewolf from Underworld is Raze. He was portrayed by the amazing Kevin Grevioux. Who actually wrote and came up with the concept of the Underworld series. He is now a writer for Marvel. And he used to be a microbiologist and genetic engineer. He is a talented and versatile guy. Oh and btw that was how his voice normally sounds in Underworld.

I am honestly disappointed about how few black heroes, or villians, have made it to the screen. I mean I can't wait to see John Stewart on screen, he is the only Lantern I actually give a shit about, he has emotions, is relatable you know an average Joe, not some amazing pilot or an artist or a jackass. He was a soldier turned architect, when do we get him onscreen? but no. We have to go through Hal and that annoying ass Guy Gardner before we even get Stewart!

And another thing what the hell is with Black Lightning? There have been four SHOWS that feature characters identical to him, right down to the costume, but they never call him by the actual character name. It Black Vulcan, Soul Power, and then Juice... the others I can handle, but Juice is just weak... its a drink, I mean the other ones had decent names in that episode of Jstice League (i.e. Apache Chief = Long Shadow) but he gets that.

And the only person in the movie world that has even mentioned him is Terrence Phillips, I hate him, but I give him props for actually acknowleging how under used the character is.

I got off on a tangent there I think.
THEHAWK - 11/20/2009, 12:24 AM

I was shocked ,but out of respect to him I stopped the joking .Although I dont believe in anything like that I'd be offended\angried if someone spoke lowly or jokingly about JESUS in my presence.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 12:30 AM
@LEEE
ExactLEEE. Hollywood doesn't give a rat's fat ass about what the comic book reader thinks, nor do they lose sleep wondering if their next CBM is close to the source material. They care about DOLLARS, nothing more, nothing less. They stay up at night thinking about what will put asses in seats and heft in bank accounts, and if they can top TDK. That's IT. They have found a cash-cow in comic book movies and are going to rape it until it bleeds, then move on.

SOME directors care about source material and SOME writers care about dialogue and SOME producers care about the characters being portrayed, but movie executives could care less. They would make Ulcer Man VS Ruptured Spleen Woman if they though it would make them rich. They would have people eating shit on screen if they thought someone would pay a dollar for it. Make no bones about it, Hollywood;

1)Has run flat out of ideas and is rehashing/rebooting/remaking whatever they can get their greasy little fingers on.
2)Is now seeking that which was once thought of as a "childs medium", comics.
3)Cares less about you, the comic book reader/movie fan.
4)Would film your grandmother taking her worst chili-cheese hotdog dump and run it in a theater somewhere to make a buck.

Thank god for guys like Favreau, Branagh, Donner, and to some extent Norton (as an actor), Leterrier, Nolan and Burton, and even Raimi (but just a little bit for Raimi) for trying to make a CBM enjoyable.

By the way, Norton is listed on IMDB as Banner and Penn ans Writer on The Avengers (rumor).
gtrman - 11/20/2009, 12:33 AM
@BLADE. Seriously? I thought that religion died out.
THEHAWK - 11/20/2009, 12:33 AM
@Multi
You know darn well they aren't going to "astral void" the mans face out. Most actors have "face-time" clauses in their contract. It's why Maguire's mask comes off in every damn Spiderman movie.
gtrman - 11/20/2009, 12:34 AM
Hawk: That's a good question...when are we going to see a Black Lighting movie or star to dvd? I think they could do alot with ICON he's a knock off of Superman .He's black and his ship crash lands in Africa durning the 1800's. I think he ages slower than Superman does and their powers are similar but quite diffrent at the same time.
He's someone you could do alot with because he's not mainstream but he does have a solid background . It's a character that's easy to follow ,because you know he's a
diffrent take on Superman from a parrell universe.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 12:43 AM
@THEHAWK -- Odinism is indeed alive and well. It's not as well known as some other religions of course, but it's still being practiced. I actually have a few friends online who sparked my interest in the subject when our discussions turned to Thor, as both the comics and mythology have been a very influential interest of mine since the late 70s. While I am not an Odinist, I've had many interesting conversations about the Norse gods and the sagas over the years.

@BLADE -- Thanks for relating the story about your friend. Always interesting to hear about that and it puts a face on the potential problem this casting *might* bring with it. As I said, if nothing else, I think it needs to be looked at for potential problems before they go forward with Elba. They have so many things that look, at least on the surface, to be done the right way here, that I'd hate to see any kind of problems bring it down at all.
TheDemonHunter - 11/20/2009, 12:48 AM
@BLADE> I would see a Icon film, like you said he is a cool character, if a little stiff. BUt he has a crapload of powers and has an established backstory that could be worked with. I alsways liked him for that one DC Worlds Collide ting he was in, I enjoyed the fact that he gave Superman a long over due beaten. I really kinda hate Superman, I suppose it is because he is overdone. But anyway i think Icon would be pretty cool.

I'm glad they are finally bringing him into the mainstream Dc universe. I miss the Milestone comics.

I do wish we'd get the BL movie one day. And I still say Jamie FOxx for Lightning
THEHAWK - 11/20/2009, 12:54 AM
@Demonhunter. That's cool, I have always been interested in Norse culture, i find their tales to be quite enteresting, thats one of the reasons I like Thor.
THEHAWK - 11/20/2009, 12:56 AM
BLADE@, I'm half Norwegian and the Norse religion
is not called Odinism. It's called, "FORN SIOR" or "OLD
CUSTOM"! It really didn't have a name in ancient times,
it was just their belief system. It was a Pagan system
to the Latin Romans or heathen religion according to the
Christians. So I don't know what on earth your friend
was talking about! Odin and Thor were Germanic Gods and
originated with the Germans. Odin was originally-WODEN
(pronounced "VODIN")

But I agree with you BLADE@, they need to stop making
certain characters a different race just to please the
demographic and pander to the PC police! There's plenty
of different and diverse characters for any given race
to relate to, like Luke Cage and Black Panther and
Blade for black people and Shang-chi for Chinese
people and so forth and so on...they don't have to
change those established as Caucasian characters.

But I really do like Samuel L. as Fury myself even
though I do like the Caucasian Fury of the comics too!
It ain't a race thing with me I'm just a huge Samuel L.
Jackson fanatic! :D

I don't know why Branagh wants to change Nordic Caucasian
Heimdall to a black guy but it really sounds silly to me!
Heimdall is definitely Caucasian in the comics!
DDD - 11/20/2009, 1:16 AM
Hawk: Foxx for Black Lighting that'll work the guy has talent and the build.

Demonhunter: I dont think there's enough Odinist to cause a problem, but I hear you. It just doesnt make sense...I guess THEIR ADDING COLOR to Asgard ....LOL. Not to be outdone when or if Cage comes out he'll be from upstate New York. He graduates from NYU as a electrical engineer and signs up for a experimental program at the college. He recieves his powers from this experiment and later joins S.h.e.i.l.d and becomes Fury's lap dog.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 1:21 AM
DDD: YEA I like either or for Fury both characters have a solid background so that's fine. Your right we(African-Americans) have several characters they could put on the big screen.

Bishop
Deathlok
Black Manta
Black Goliath
Cage
Photon
Mr.Terrific
Firestorm
ICON
Falcon
Rocket

If any of those came to the big screen I'd be diappointed if they changed their race. It has nothing to do with the race for me if somewhere in the characters pass he or she was both races i.e. Firestorm. I also hate when they change the uniform to the point it doesnt even look like the character. Im expecting steak when I go to Outback Steak House so when I order the porterhouse dont bring me a cheese pizza.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 1:36 AM
Yeah, BLADE@ I hear ya!
Don't swap our Porterhouse with
a Damm "CHEESY PIZZA"!

Too bad a lot of the time the
Hollywood producers don't
listen to us lowly fans who
made their money-making characters
household names in the first place!

Give us close proximity costumes
to the originals and keep the people
the same damm people, fer cryin' out loud!!!
DDD - 11/20/2009, 1:44 AM
Although in all fairness Asgard is a place
of gods and godesses and human criteria
don't really fit when referring to gods!

I mean Hogan looks Oriental/Mongolian so
a black Heimdall ain't all that far-fetched!
DDD - 11/20/2009, 1:49 AM
DDD: It's not rocket science if the guy has been white\black\red\or yellow for the last 40 plus years all Im saying is keep him that way. If there has been variations over the years in the character fine I can deal with that.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 1:50 AM
DDD: well I guess that's how we better start looking at...because it seems like Hemidall is going to be black.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 1:52 AM

@blade and Multi I couldnt agree more. Idris is an AMAZING actor though. Question you guys think black lightning would be better as a T.V Series or Movie? I think if they did a black lightning movie and they made it a bit like Infamous and combined some of the features from infamous like the free running itd be awesome......i wanna be black lightning : [
Set2Fallfirst - 11/20/2009, 2:08 AM
Black Lightning gets no respect. In the comics people always asks if he is Static's father, not if Static is his son.Static has gained more prominence in the DC Universe than Black Lightning.

They ought to use him in an episode of Smallville. They could have easily used him during the high school years.Jefferson Pierce is a teacher from Metropolis. He could have transferred from the Metropolis school system to Smallville's.He could have stuck around for a few episodes.
kenny38606 - 11/20/2009, 2:21 AM
"If there has been variations over the years in the character fine I can deal with that."

@BLADE4040,

Well any past variation for any character had to start some day; for Heimdall, this variation starts now.

@ blade

lol, sorry, it had to be done. i agree with you though, they shouldn't use a black person to play a white character or vice versa. one of the EASIEST things to get right in these movies is the race of the character. it pisses me off to no end when they try to give a part to someone of the wrong race. like you said, make some more movies about black heroes. where's the luke cage movie? or black panther? or GL john stewart. so far we've got blade, which was great and all, but there are others out there.

a black panther movie would be great AND they could tie it in with an avengers sequel!
CorndogBurglar - 11/20/2009, 5:06 AM
reallly? Idris? The movie casting gods love me!
MsKyle08 - 11/20/2009, 5:14 AM
Yeah, they need to make Black Panther after the first
Avengers, in between the first Avengers and the second.
Then have Black Panther, Hawkeye, Vison, Scarlet Witch
and Pietro in number 2!

Then in the third add in Ms. Marvel, Wonderman and
Doctor Strange.
DDD - 11/20/2009, 5:41 AM
I'm sorry, but if he did an audition and was the best of everyone, he's got my vote. I'm tired of people who look the part but do a terrible job with the character. For me getting the character right takes backseat to anything unless race is a part of the character. (i.e. Black Panther is from Africa.) I don't know how they'll do the brother/sister thing, but I've seen enough bad CBM's not to care about this casting choice, especially with the direction of this movie so far.
Upupandaway - 11/20/2009, 6:15 AM
Hey guys.. Heimdall is supposed to be Sif's brother, right? Instead, he's her brotha..

I'm sorry, I'm as much against racism as anyone, but for Pete's sake, these are ancient mythological entities of the Norse people! The last time I checked, Nordic peoples don't tend to get that tanned up north.

Political correctness strikes again!

paladinn - 11/20/2009, 6:34 AM
Blade4040, your my new hero. *applaudes*
I agree with every word you have said about this.

Heimdall is a very important figure in Asgaard, and I bet Idris will do a great job, but still.... Personally I look at this move as a mistake.

I just have to say that it's highly cheesy to throw in a token black person just to make the movie seem more diverse to all the jerks out there that make a big deal about stuff like that. It's pandering to the PC police, and it's not a good thing. It's a political decision, and not an artistic one. In a perfect world the film maker wouldn't be swayed by politics.

I have said from the start that I was concerned that Branaugh was not familiar with the comics. Perhaps he doesn't know Heimdall is Sif's brother. Or worse: maybe he knows but he doesn't give a damn. Either way, even if Idris does a good job, I look at this as a screw up.

Not a HUGE one of course. it could be worse. But it's something of an error nontheless. Blade, it looks like it's pizza after all mang lol

DarthMulder - 11/20/2009, 7:21 AM
Ummmm...

I have no problem changing a characters race or ethnicity provided it doesn't affect the character in any major way. But I'm preeeeeeeeety sure that there weren't any black people in the area when and where they created Norse Mythology.

I'm also frustrated that now I have to find a new Falcon. Goddamit.
MovieTheaterLad - 11/20/2009, 7:34 AM
they should have made Sif black too lol

That would make more sense to me.
DarthMulder - 11/20/2009, 8:01 AM
I dont have a problem with them changing the race of a character like Heimdall's but this is the second Thor character to have their race changed (the other being the guy who's playing one of the Warriors Three) I cant help but wonder whether they're doing this because there are literally NO Asgardian characters who arent white! (as far as I can remember) I have to agree with DarthMulder that theseseem to be "token" casting choices..!

However, from what I've read both of these guys have good reputations of being good actors so I'm not too worried in that respect!

Aaron Eckhart was my personal choice for Heimdall though...

Heimdall

MovieTheaterLad: Here's a new Falcon for you! :)

LEEE777 - 11/20/2009, 8:34 AM
@josh: The thing is that this is the first non-nonsensical casting from a racial standpoint. Hogun (of The Warriors Three) is depicted in the comics as looking different than other Asgardians because he's not originally from Asgard. He looks Mongolian, so the casting choice fits.

This one, though. . . not so much.

@Set: Did you get your box of goodies yet?
MultiPurposePoni - 11/20/2009, 8:36 AM
WORST CASTING EVER.
SirPrize - 11/20/2009, 8:36 AM
@ josh excellent choice for Falcon. Dunbar has the right look and can be a bad ass next to Cap
Stubbyswof - 11/20/2009, 8:43 AM
I posted an article,my first and unique, about this ethnicity thing and had only few comment! But seems you have some interest :-D
MisterFixit - 11/20/2009, 8:55 AM
They might as well have gone with casting a woman for Heimdall. Maybe an old lady in a rocking chair??? I guess we should be glad they decided to let Heimdall keep his penis. And what a penis it is...
Shaman - 11/20/2009, 9:01 AM
. . . with a penis like that, you'd think he'd smile more often
MultiPurposePoni - 11/20/2009, 9:02 AM
TheJester - 11/20/2009, 9:06 AM
I know i would smile more often if i had that penis.
Shaman - 11/20/2009, 9:58 AM
He may simply have blown them away in the audition. A part like that would have probably been an open casting call. It doesn't have to have any more to it than that. The guy is a big, intense, and very good actor.
RorMachine - 11/20/2009, 10:02 AM
soforizo: when I meant past variation I meant originating with the comics... not some hollywood big wig screwing with the characters. I want to see blacks landing roles in CBM's just as much as the next guy maybe more so,but not like this. It's not really a big thing it's just one more thing, next thing you know we'll get Black Panther but he'll be gay. Leave the characters race, sexual orientation, powers, and the core of his origin alone. Example Cpt.America :dont change how and why he recieves the super-solider serum. Now the serum causes Cpt to fly and he's some crazed killing machine.
I know that's alittle over the top but Im sure you get the picture.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 10:02 AM
I had no problem with Nick Fury or Kingpin changing races for the jump to the big screen, but these are NORSE GODS. We don't need Tyrone the Brave or Pooky the Bold.
Avengersrule - 11/20/2009, 10:03 AM
Rumor has it that Dennis Rodman was casted to play the Enchantress. =P
SirPrize - 11/20/2009, 10:08 AM
That's true Ror.

BLADE- Great comment right there. If it wasn't Marvel themselves filming first avenger, the studios could have litteraly concidered those liberties.

Avengersrule- Pooky LOL But where do nug nug and pojo fit in???

Sirprize- And judging from the size of his penis, he'd land that role down cold!
Shaman - 11/20/2009, 10:16 AM
joshW24: I dont know of any Asgardian thats white either but there's one black guy with Asgardian powers. Dr.Eliot Franklin a.k.a Thunderball he's part of the Wrecking Crew and recieves his magical Asgardian base powers thru the Wrecker's crowbar.
However earth is going to tie in to this movie could've used this guy Elba to play the Doctor . He could have some type of connection with Jane Foster maybe they went to college together or something.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 10:24 AM
you all just proved my point lol and you to CorndogBurglar lol lol black heroes in anime are more cooler than the black american type super heroes witch is sad.

one day we will get a black cool looking super heroe movie and a good comic lol

Shaman: I SMILE ALL THE TIME...AS A MATTER A FACT SO DOES THE MRS...LOL.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 10:31 AM
@BLADE4040

I agree with you dude. It seems to me that Hollywood doesn't know how to incorporate black actors to comic book movies. I can say that I'm happy with how things are going with Ironman 2. Warmachine may open the door for more black heroes on flim. We can only hope. So that's just what I think. After Ironman 2, things might change.

You've been UNMASKED!
Unmasked - 11/20/2009, 10:32 AM
luffycapri: to each its own but I loved the Blade movies didnt really follow the comic that much.

Black Panther-if done right could be an amazing movie if based strictly from the source material.

Bishop-I'd like to see this character on screen also Im just not too famaliar with him.

Luke Cage-marvel has done alot to improve this character I think it's just a matter of time before he hits some type of screen.

Black Lighting-with todays tech that character brought to the big screen could be very entertaining with the light show alone.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 10:42 AM
@Leee and Josh

Sorry but I do not recognize them.

@Blade

I bet she does snap snap wink wink say no more!

@Luffy

Whoah that's a bit going a bit overboard.

First of all, Black folk are represented far more in American superhero comics alone than in all of anime. I can tell you right from experience that the Japanese as a whole have virtually no knowledge of African Americans, let alone Africans. Hell, the only ones that, I have found, they can name off of the top of their head are Obama and Bob Sapp. And even when they ARE in anime, they are never more than C-level in terms of characterization and exposure, with the only exception being Afro Samurai.

And besides, we've got plenty of famous black superheroes, or actually, superheroes who just happen to be black.
MovieTheaterLad - 11/20/2009, 10:47 AM
unmasked: YEA Im waiting to see how much time WarMachine actually gets and not Rhodes. I really dont care for Cheadle in a action role....check out TRAITOR.
Who knows he might pull it off....I didnt really care for Reeve as Superman & Keaton as Batman lot of others did.. we'll see.

@fotc: I have no idea, maybe it conflicted with the series 'The Wire'? It's a shame they never mentioned him again. I thought he was freakin' hilarious and played a great straightman off of Michael's goffy character. They finally had someone on the show that couldn't stand him LOL
MultiPurposePoni - 11/20/2009, 11:01 AM
Luffy:I dont know much about anime, but Im sure they dont represent blacks like Marvel,DC,Image, and Darkhorse comic does just to name a few. Here's a tip of the iceberg-

Darkhorse: counterstrike,first slayer,plexus

Image comics: black samson,chapel,darkwing,rapture,
spawn,tribe

DC: amazing man,amanda waller,big thunder,black eagle,
black racer,bloodwynd,bronze tiger,dr.mist,empress,
jakeem thunder,star boy,tyroc,vixen

Marvel: anarchist,axe,bandit,battlestar,cardiac,cloak,hammer,horus&isis-helipolitan gods,maxam,night thrasher

thats just to name a few if anime has even that many characters...well I'd be surprised.

BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 11:10 AM
And Bob Sapp iiiiiis... who?
Shaman - 11/20/2009, 11:11 AM
It's the name of Heimdall's penis
MultiPurposePoni - 11/20/2009, 11:15 AM
BLADE4040 , I don't watch a lot of anime but the one's i do watch they make black look cool and there strong as hell.
There are some cool super heroes in the U.S to but not many people know about them.

And yes the blade movies are good well the first two were and Bishop & Luke Cage & Black Lighting oh and static are cool super heroes but why cant they make super heroes the that every one would know about and want to watch in a movie theater. It like Hollywood's only way of getting a black dude in a super hero movies is replacing the white character with a black character.

oh and MovieTheaterLad I know what you mean and all but not all anime characters are like C level characters in all.

Shaman - 11/20/2009, 12:13 PM
Not who I expected at all, very left-field.

Personally, I don't know if Elba fits Heimdall, but he's a great actor, so I'll leave the judgement up to his performance.

Alexander Skarsgard would have been the perfect Heimdall IMO though.

InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/20/2009, 12:15 PM
It makes sense to have all the races represented in a God REalm- get over it. What i want to know is , Which of the Asgardians will be Native American ? And more importantly.... which white actor will portray him? Cuz you know there are no Native American Female Actors. F#ck it.

Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgard, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson and Tadanobu Asano.

The film is going to be absolutely epic!

MULTI: Thats a good point! At least that casting choice can be justified to a certain extent...this one is inexplicable though!

Stubbyswof: Thanks! Thats exactly what I thought when I chose him - he's perfect for Falcon and a brilliant actor who would do a great job if he were ever cast as the character!

MovieTheaterLad: His name is Rockmund Dunbar and he's from the TV show, Prison Break and is perfect for Falcon - trust me! :)

SHHH: Awesome picture man!
JoshW - 11/20/2009, 12:58 PM

flames809 - 11/20/2009, 1:49 PM
Luffy: your right 90% of the black superheroes arent well known....first off 99% of white superheroes have atleast a 20-30yr headstart. Durning the early 40's clear thru to the early 70's you could've had a heroe reach Superman or Batman status being black. It was just the times the masses would'nt have supported a comic starring a black heroe. With all that being said we do have several big name super-types that can and will pull in a nice box office payday if or when it's produced . Right now for as Im concerned if done right Luke Cage and the Black Panther.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 1:51 PM
DarthM: ALWAYS GOOD TO BE REFERRED TO AS A HEROE...I LIKE THAT THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

InSpace - 11/20/2009, 1:59 PM
BLADE4040 yeah I under stand that. Lets just hope luke cage is a good movie and not some movie that relates to geto black people with black stereotype themes in it.

I would also be cool to see a static movie to.
dragonquest67 - 11/20/2009, 2:01 PM
blade- your right we need a black superhero movie from a comicbook and another hancock movie since hes also a black superhero

and a staticshock movie will be [frick]ing cool and
Elba has that shadow dude in static shock
flames809 - 11/20/2009, 2:03 PM
Talking about Luke Cage, Heroes for Hire would be an awesome TV show. I don't know about Iron Fist's costume though. Wakanda would be a welcome change to the normal urban fare in most superhero movies. Black Panther needs the big screen.
Upupandaway - 11/20/2009, 2:07 PM
dragonquest: that's why I mentioned earlier marvel has made improvements with Cage. He's out of the hood(not totally and that's good) and taking on intergalactic villians with the Avengers, has a successful partnership in heroes for hire, and married with a kid. Alot can be done with Cage just dont stick him in the 70's with the yellow silk shirt, sterotypical characters surrounding him the whole movie, and he's 5'9 and a 165lbs with a jeri curl.
BLADE4040 - 11/20/2009, 2:48 PM
Well, that about wraps up the big boys in Thor, its gonna be epic for sure.
We should start a pool for which announcement we will get next SINESTRO from the upcoming Green Lantern or will we get Captain america.
Which one, and when, everyone throw in $1.00.
Hawksblueyes - 11/20/2009, 2:51 PM
@Hawks: Not yet, bud. You're forgetting about Donald Blake and Balder!
MultiPurposePoni - 11/20/2009, 2:53 PM
Will Donald Blake and Thor be played by a different actor?Have they said if Thor will inhabit the body of Blake, or will Blake just be his human guise?I just assumed they would be the same actor. If they are different actors, then Hemsworth won't get much screen time during all the Blake scenes.
kenny38606 - 11/20/2009, 2:57 PM
Oh, Balder for sure, sorry, Blake --not so much. I still say we should have some sort contest for a Cap or Sinestro announcement.
Hawksblueyes - 11/20/2009, 2:58 PM
@Blade,

It's not that I don't get the 'problem', it's just that it doesn't seem like a big a deal to me. We aren't just simply talking about some Hollywood wig from FOX or Sony, we're talking about Marvel. Seems to me that if any company has a right to modify their characters is them. It is smarter to make these modifications now that they're introducing Thor in a new medium (movies) to a far bigger audience rather than later.

soforizo - 11/20/2009, 3:01 PM

I agree with this.I don't believe Marvel set out to get a black actor, but his audition must have been so good they had to have him.It is their character, I've gotta believe they know who can accurately portray him.
kenny38606 - 11/20/2009, 3:05 PM
Heres the thing that kind of sucks about this choice. There are only so many decent actors to begin with, then there are only a hand full of black actors that are good, they should be saved for black chacters. Other wise they will get reused quickly. I personally feel an actor should only get the opprotuinity to be 1 hero. for example Micheal keaton shouldn't be Batman then cast as Cabal. Now IMO he cant be any cast as any of the major Black characters in the Marvel universe.
thatiscrazy - 11/20/2009, 3:22 PM
Ray Stevenson shouldn't be in this movie either... he's Frank Castle.
thatiscrazy - 11/20/2009, 3:24 PM
@thatiscrazy,

You're probably right. I know Idris can act, but I'm not sold that he can play this type of role, it's a wait and see. I sorta feel the same way for Anthony Hopkins due to his physique, but I'm open to it.

thwhtGuardian - 11/20/2009, 5:00 PM
is this casting official or a rumor. are we not sure that Idris Elba not going to play Demitrius Collins

http://marvel.wikia.com/Demitrius_Collins_%28Earth-616%29

anyway i know alot of people are outraged by the casting but look how many white actors been playing asian actors and no one did not complain. i.e. Marvel Studio produce The Incredible Hulk (2008) they had white actor Martin Starr played Amadeus Cho. if you dont know Amadeus Cho is a Korean-American character.

in The Incredible Hulk, Martin Starr plays Amadeus Cho his the student at the University, who allows Bruce Banner access to the campus computers in exchange for pizza.

now with the whole Black Panther and Luke Cage situation i have a feeling Marvel is scared to do it. i mean a character that is called Black Panther they might be worried that the general audience wont watch a movie that is called Black Panther thinking that it might have something to do with the Black Panther Party. or they might think a character that been played by a black actor is playing a comic book character called Black Panther they might say typical stereotype.

Luke Cage is taking long because Marvel is only producing PG-13 movies and i remember they wanted to make Luke Cage movie R-rated.

jazzman - 11/20/2009, 5:05 PM
I don't think anyone knew he was Cho...I didn't anyway.
thwhtGuardian - 11/20/2009, 5:12 PM
@thwhtGuardian

well now you know lol

anyway i know the casting of Idris Elba playing Asgardian character is off. but what about the Clash of The Titans casting Alexa Davalos to play Andromeda no one did not complain about that. in Greek mythology Andromeda is from Ethiopia. In Greek mythology, Ethiopia (or Aethiopia), literally meaning 'the land of burnt faces'. Its inhabitants were described as being black and or swarthy with curly or woolen hair.

anyway do people forget that Kenneth Branagh always cast a black actor in his film that is based/influence on William Shakespeare.

"Much Ado About Nothing" had Denzel Washington
"Love's Labours Lost" had Carmen Ejogo and Adrian Lester
"As You Like It" had David Oyelowo

people might say their is no black Norse Gods but since when Australians are Norse Gods. Chris Hemsworth who is White-Australian playing Nordic character. plus Marvel Thor is different from Thor of Norse mythology. Thor in Norse mythology generally portrayed as having red hair not blonde. plus Thor Norse mythology travels in a chariot drawn by goats Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjostr. while Marvel thor does not travel on a chariot.

jazzman - 11/20/2009, 5:24 PM

I'd pay money to see the Rock as Bishop in "A Days of Futures Past" X-men movie. And as for the Hulk movie, there were so many nods to the comics and the Tv show it made me happy. Heroes for Hire would make a much better Tv show than a movie.
Ugh - 11/20/2009, 6:15 PM
We still need Frigga, Balder, Enchantress and Valkyrie.

HULK2099 - 11/20/2009, 8:01 PM
Idris Elba is coming on strong these days. Check out the trailer for Takers. Now as for him being Heimdall comes as quite a surprise. I cant ever recall a black asgardian in the Thor comics. As a black kid comin up in the 70's I was heavily into Luke Cage. For me Marvel had the cooler characters both black and white. DC not so much back then but I read both because I was a comicbook nut. Hopefully Elba will have dialogue worthy of his talents otherwise whats the point?
hewilldefytheirgravity - 11/20/2009, 10:22 PM
Fanboys are up in arms already and so much pc is flowing in this posting. Just relax everyone. All things in movies and comics have to be retooled in order to gain a wider audience. Im sure he will be great in the role and he may not be in the movie for long. I know what u mean. For me as long as they don't pull a Will Smith for 'Captain America' bull; i'm sorta okay with it.

P.S. Over 40's crowd? Mind if we call you grandpa? j/k
soforizo - 11/21/2009, 10:39 PM
I like this casting, I do hate it when they change a character's ethenticity to be diverse but if the character isn't THAT well know to the public and they put a good actor in the role I don't see what the problem is. It's the same with Kingpin, although all of us know who Kingpin is if you were to ask your friend who never reads comics he wouldn't have a clue who the character is. So making a character Black isn't really a big deal unless it's a very well known character such as Supes or Spidey or something.
Ryden - 11/22/2009, 5:51 AM
I'd always pegged him for a Luke Cage
TheSoulEater - 11/23/2009, 12:49 AM
Fanboys make me sad. Whenever the cast a black actor as a minor white character in comic book movies you get the crying and bitching from a few insecure people. Humanity never fails to disappoint me.

Spider-Man

Peter Parker - Has to be white
JJJ - Has to be white
MJ Watson - Has to be white
Robbie Robinson - Has to be black
Frederick Foswell - Who cares?

Iron Man

Tony Stark - Has to be white
James Rhodes - Has to be black
Pepper Potts - Has to be white
Happy Hogan - Who cares?

Superman

Clark Kent - Has to be white
Lois Lane - Has to be white
Jimmy Olsen - Has to be white
Cat Grant - Who cares?

I have absolutely no idea why people are getting their nose bent out of shape in regards to the color of a minor character who probably won't have that much screentime (you'd think).
