Chris Nolan Breaks His Silence; Talks About the Cinematic Future of Superman & Batman

There's been a lot of speculation regarding the Batman director's involvement with future Warner Bros comic book films; here, he finally addresses the rumors.

Geoff Boucher, of the LA Times' Hero Complex, recently spoke with Batman Begins & The Dark Knight director Chris Nolan in his Hollywood home. The fan favorite director chose to talk for the first time about was the 'other' superhero movie Warner Bros. is developing: Superman.

"It’s very exciting, we have a fantastic story. And we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right."

Nolan's wife, and production partner for the past two Batman films, addressed the internet buzz surrounding an 'insider' story that the next Superman film will be titled 'Man of Steel' and feature Lex Luthor and Brainiac as the antagonists.

"I don’t know where this stuff comes from," she laughed.

The biggest question fans have pondered over is whether the next installment of the Superman franchise will follow Brian Singer's Superman Returns. Nolan said that, while he admired Singer’s film and the connection to Donner's original vision of the character, the next movie will stand all on its own.

"A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that’s what I know how to do."

Nolan's stance that Batman exists in a world where he is the only superhero around hasn't changed; and it seems he's leaning in the same direction for Superman, "Each serves to the internal logic of the story. They have nothing to do with each other."

Nolan's involvement with the Superman film was apparently not a planned move by the studio. It turns out when Nolan and Goyer were at an impasse for formulating a sequel to The Dark Knight, Goyer suggested he try his hand at another comic character. Nolan said,

"He basically told me, 'I have this thought about how you would approach Superman.' I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way."

Nolan says he has no idea who might direct the Superman film; but regarding casting he wants to incorporate the same dynamic he used for the Batman films; renowned actors throughout the cast, even in the supporting roles,

"I went to the studio with the analogy of 'I want to cast the way they did in 1978 with Superman, where they had Brando and Glenn Ford and Ned Beatty and all these fantastic actors in even small parts, which was an exotic idea for a superhero movie at the time. It really paid off, too. As a kid watching Superman it seemed enormous and I realized later by looking at it that a lot of that was actually the casting, just having these incredibly talented people and these characterizations. And Marlon Brando is the first guy up playing Superman’s dad. It’s incredible."

When asked if Superman, as a franchise, has to overcome what many people believe to be a a deficiency of memorable villains (especially compared to Batman), Nolan stayed neutral, “That’s a very sly way of asking a question I’m not going to answer.”

Though Nolan won't confirm that he will be helming the next Batman film, it's pretty obvious the director's chair is his, especially since he's hard at work with the script,

"[Goyer] is writing a script for me and we’ll wait to see how it turns out...he’s struggling to put it together into the epic story that you want it to be."

"We’re approaching it in a not dissimilar way in terms of trying to find an incredible story in a way that audiences can engage with it the way they engage with contemporary action films. I think David’s approach is a very good way of doing just that."

Get ready for this shocker, Bat-fans, it sounds like Nolan will be wrapping up his Bat-verse by the end of the next film:

"I’m very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters. My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these thing don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling. And it hearkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That’s what we do."

The director didn't go into any detail about the characters he and Goyer are considering for the next film, but he did shoot down a rumor that has circulated for some time:

"It won’t be Mr. Freeze."

Shaman - 3/10/2010, 8:42 AM
I [frick]ING HATE HARTNETT!!!!! *shakes fists in angre*
bropous - 3/10/2010, 8:43 AM
If I hear Brandon Routh for Superman one more time I think I am going to projectile vomit.

He is NOT Superman, no matter how many rubber muscles you glue on him.

Enough of Routh. He tried Superman, and failed miserably.

May we actually get a manly, lantern-jawed Superman for ONCE.
vonstallin - 3/10/2010, 8:44 AM
Damn...just listening to how excited he is for Man of Steel makes me just as excited.

Nolan havent made a flop yet and I have faith in the next superman film now. Jez I wish I knew what David G had in mind.

I know im in the minority when I say that I dont care if he/they dont unify the universe with a superman bat man film.

The way Batman Begins and the Dark Night are made...to me it would feel/seem odd to have superman in it.

Nolans Batman is so grounded in a sorta reality based world, that I think superman would over shadow Nolans batman. Nolands batman isn't as strong/amazing as comic book and cartoon Batman.

Anyway Im excited as hell.

I did like Brandon R, but reading between the lines Nolan will re-cast everyone. I think with Nolan in the drivers seat Brandon will do great, but at the same time, Im excited to see who Nolan think is a good superman. Im open for a New Man of Steel.

it will be EPIC....

I guess we will not see this b4 the end of the world 2012.
ThisFan - 3/10/2010, 8:44 AM
Nolan is a great director and the fact that both these movies have movement is just great!
Also i would like to see a crossover batman superman movie someday and not just have them in there own worlds.
CorndogBurglar - 3/10/2010, 8:44 AM
hawks just posted this, but i'll comment here too.

Newsarama is reporting that Nolan said this:

"Superman will be "the only superhero" in his world."

so keep chearing people, but this means no combined DC movie universe...
bropous - 3/10/2010, 8:44 AM
What the heck is the deal with Hartnett's face??? He didn't have that stupid eyelid surgery, did he?
CorndogBurglar - 3/10/2010, 8:46 AM
@ tea

so two inches?? lol :)
Spilox - 3/10/2010, 8:47 AM
Hartnett sucks monkeyballs. He seems to enjoy it :p.
droopy1317 - 3/10/2010, 8:48 AM

Shaman - 3/10/2010, 8:49 AM

"I went to the studio with the analogy of 'I want to cast the way they did in 1978 with Superman, where they had Brando and Glenn Ford and Ned Beatty and all these fantastic actors in even small parts, which was an exotic idea for a superhero movie at the time."

Oh god no, no, no, NO, Jor-el's left nut, NO!!!!!

The 1978 Superman was CRAP, Nolan, do NOT look to that stinking piece of tripe as template for a new Superman movie. All of the heavy stars KILLED the movie.

Dammit, so even Nolan doesn't get it, that you find the BEST actor for the role, and not the BEST role for a particular actor?

Oh, lord, and Lex Luthor coming back? And Brainaic? Sheesh, there goes the major fight at the end of the movie. We will have to wait til someone reboots the Nolan Superman franchise to see Darkseid, one of the few villains that actually can take Superman down in a fight?

I know you folks are down on Johnson for Captain America, but if Nolan takes this approach for a Superman movie, I am going to feel the same way. Superman has NEVER been done correctly cinematically, and from what Nolan is saying above, I would have to take the position that although he is fantastic to tell the story of Batman, the directorship for Superman should surely pass to another.

I would rather see no Superman movie at all than see another failed disappointment, like every single Superman movie made since 1978.

*blech!*
ATOMbomb - 3/10/2010, 8:52 AM
AWESOME!! Nolan and Goyer are going to save Superman. Can't wait for the next Bat film.
bropous - 3/10/2010, 8:56 AM
It does sound to me that Nolan will wrap his involvement with The Batman after the next film, and with him trying to tie up the story by the end of the next movie, I do not think that any of this bodes well in the slightest for an active challenge by DC to take down Marvel's mastery of the silver screen anytime soon.

I think he's put the nail in the coffin of his version of Batman integrating into a Justice League film arc, as we were hoping. Sad.

I think there is a lot he can do for that concept, but something is telling me, Spidey-sense or otherwise, that DC is not ready to stand up and pursue real competition with Marvel at the theaters. I think DC will end up abrogating the race.
Colton - 3/10/2010, 8:59 AM
gud news, but we've bin waiting ovr 30yrs 4 a proper superman villain. Plz put in darkseid r doomsday r atleast introduce dem in2 it at sum point
FateSucks - 3/10/2010, 9:01 AM
"Each serves to the internal logic of the story. They have nothing to do with each other."

EPIC FAIL

Clearly Nolan is missing something huge here. The "frenemy" status between Superman and Batman has a lot to do with how each character views the world, gained their power, and views how power should be handled. This fundamental difference is enough to make any film. That kind of source of conflict at the heart of a story most writers or directors would kill for. This is a relationship that you could do a full length feature, without any action, with Bats as a cranky old man, and Supes still Alien, and still young, with the main characters just discussing the nature of power and it would be a good film.

Nolan, I like your work, but drop the art house pretense when you come into our world. If you treat our world with respect, we'll spend money on your work forever. You piss on us, we'll dump you quick.
GUNSMITH - 3/10/2010, 9:06 AM
NOLAN SAVED BATMAN, HE WILL SAVE SUPERMAN...THING IS, IF YOU WERE NOLAN...WHO WOULD YOU CAST IN EACH PART? HE'S SAYING HUGE ACTORS..WHO DO WE HAVE TODAY THAT COULD FIT THAT CATEGORY? I KNOW FOR SURE I'D GET ANTHONY HOPKINS TO BE JOR-EL
CorndogBurglar - 3/10/2010, 9:07 AM
@ fatesucks

i don't think i agree with that. yeah, this means there will be no combined DC universe. but you don't NEED to have the relationship between Supes and Bats to make a good movie. would we all LOVE to see it?? sure. but remember, the MAJORITY of Superman comics DON'T have Batman in them, and vice versa. it isn't needed to make a good movie.
Colton - 3/10/2010, 9:08 AM
@fatesucks i totally agree
CorndogBurglar - 3/10/2010, 9:09 AM
@ multi

yeah, but it still got the gyst of it. and to me, this is bad news. i know a lot of people are happy about this, but i REALLY wanted a combined DC universe that lead to a JLA movie. this pretty much makes that impossible...unless they want to leave Supes and Bats out of a JLA movie...which would just be sacriligious.
Fortress - 3/10/2010, 9:11 AM
This is awesome news!!!

Well done Warner Bros!

Nolan will get Supes back on track!!!! ;D
Hawksblueyes - 3/10/2010, 9:11 AM
Multi: I didn't miss anything. I got all the main points. In order to translate any more information I would have had to pretty much copy and paste the entire article.

I did go to the source and decided to go with SHH's version.

Second lesson of the day: Never assume. ;)
Hawksblueyes - 3/10/2010, 9:14 AM
Multi: I agree completely with your last statement.
Gotbatman - 3/10/2010, 9:15 AM
fine! haha
if no to Hartnett (and if no Routhboot) then why not...

Tahmoh Penikett for Superman?!

Colton - 3/10/2010, 9:19 AM
at the end of the day its up to dc. Aftr nolans closure movie ders no1 to stop a crossovr plus there was an interview wit bale bout yr nd a half ago where he sed he had spoken to routh bout a crossovr. It was in empire r total film. I tink d sooner nolan finishes wit batman the better. Hes a gr8 director but he doesnt care bout wat the fans want. We'l hav 2 wait til hes finishd for a dc crossovr
Hawksblueyes - 3/10/2010, 9:19 AM
Multi: None taken, I just love argueing with you. ;P

ALL: Check out my Captain America article under Editorials.
ManhuntersBastardChild - 3/10/2010, 9:19 AM
I have to agree with bropous and fatsucks in regards to Nolan killing the connectedness of the DCverse.

While I too am stoked to see his enthusiasm for the supes revamp, I cannot help but shudder at the idea that Supes and Batsy will live as though no other costumed hero exists anywhere. This does nothing for a Justice League tie-in which is where WB/DC should want to go if they've got any sense at all. It's definitely where all the fans wanna see them go.

Nolan is being selfish killing off (yes, I said it..I can bet he will) the batman and preventing the DC Universe from coming to life.
bropous - 3/10/2010, 9:21 AM
You know what really P!SSES me off, though?

How long have we been screaming at DC to get its goddamn act together? HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN since the release of Batman Begins, which was the resurrection of the DC comic movie, and how much coordination between DC and the studios have we seen to at least make a LAME half-assed attempt to even pretend they would compete with Marvel?

So many years, what has DC given us? They followed up Batman Begins with frigging WATCHMEN, for Loki's sake! HUH? Superman, Wonder Woman, so many well-known characters waiting for their chance on the big screen, and they dig up Watchmen? [Spare me the "my college literature professor jizzed into his copy and forced us to lick it and oh boy am I a better comic fan than you because I liked it!" crap. I think Watchmen is weakly derivative writing with characters purloined from DC sources with a Marvel-ized dose of angst and problems.

WB completely blew the momentum going with that one instead of trying to ramp up another MAJOR DC star for a film. Aside from Green Lantern now filming, can someone point to me the actual competitive action that DC/WB has taken to challenge Marvel?

The wrong people are in charge at DC, and the right people are in charge at Marvel, I guess is what it all boils down to. I really wish that would change because we would have FAR better movies if both studios/comic companies felt they had to out-do the other in a truly competitive race to the theater screens.
LEEE777 - 3/10/2010, 9:24 AM
WTF??????????

Wheres the other article in main about this gone???????

Oh well gotta write this out again lol...

ROUTHBOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!

OR HENRY CAVILL!!

; )

Hawksblueyes - 3/10/2010, 9:25 AM
Nolan can do an epic job on any of the DC movies. He just doesn't seem like he would even like to attempt to contemplate mixing the characters together.

He just doesn't get the fact that if one superpowered character exists another is bound to.

Multi: I get to wear the boots this time.

gtrman - 3/10/2010, 9:26 AM
I have no issues with Nolan or Goyer on a Superman film, but they do need to expand their horizons a bit and look outside the box, not just think outside it. What marvel is doing with their titles is brilliant, and DC should do no less. A Superman cameo is in order somewhere in the third Batman installment that should lead to a new Superman picture...with a new cast...*ahem*

Incidentally, when I saw the title "Chris Nolan Breaks His Silence; Talks About the Cinematic Future of Superman & Batman" I thought it meant a Superman/Batman movie. I was fooled darn you!
CorndogBurglar - 3/10/2010, 9:27 AM
yeah, i'll still see the Supes movie, and of course Bats 3, but i'm with Tea, i never pictured Nolan as the "second coming". and this kind of makes me not like him. even though i'm sure Supes and Bats 3 will be GREAT movies.
gtrman - 3/10/2010, 9:28 AM
@Hawksblueyes
In Nolan's Batman-world, there are no super-powered people. He probably sees them as two different universes, and therein lays the problem.
BLADE44 - 3/10/2010, 9:30 AM
bropous: finally someone on here agrees with me Superman has never been done right on the big
or small screen. I dont see what the big deal is/was
with the Watchman movie and so far the only movie DC
HAS GOTTEN RIGHT IS THE LAST TWO BATMAN FILMS.
LEEE777 - 3/10/2010, 9:31 AM
GUN @ That would be perfect if he wasn't already [frick]ing ZEUS lol!
CorndogBurglar - 3/10/2010, 9:33 AM
@ blade

lol, thats funny. no offense, but Watchmen was done WAY MORE "right" than BB AND TDK...if your talking about the translation from comic to film.
CorndogBurglar - 3/10/2010, 9:34 AM
@ televizion

you are correct, sir. they DID say that about GL, and people were like, "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT???" guess this explains why. DC never had any plans of unifying their movies.
Shaman - 3/10/2010, 9:37 AM
Gotbatman- I don't dislike Tahmoh Penikett, he was decent in "Need for Speed: Carbon". But i'd need to see more of him. So far, i like Ron's pic of Jared Padalecky to take a shot at Sups. But only if they make him more intense. If they keep the same "happy go lucky" personality, he wouldn't fit. They need to UNLEASH this bitch up!!!

CDB- I totally agree, watchmen was way more accurate than Nolan's batfilms. I didn't say "better" though, but more accurate LOL
Vital - 3/10/2010, 9:37 AM
Wow Lee that Henry Cavill guy looks a lot like Superman actually lol.
LEEE777 - 3/10/2010, 9:38 AM
TEA @ Oh yeah [frick]ing ODIN! ; P

Vital @ Cool, check out "TUDORS" great actor, and he has the height too!
ManhuntersBastardChild - 3/10/2010, 9:39 AM
bropous, i was all up on your word until you went and got sacrilegious with Watchmen..lol, but seriously, I get your point that DC has generally been holding their collective dicks to the wind, while Marvel's been hitting the books hard and delivering the goods. DC has one chance in GL to possibly redeem themselves
Shaman - 3/10/2010, 9:42 AM
Teabag- It was Tyler wasn't it? I like Cavil for Sups but i think he'd be a better young bruce wayne.

LEEE777 - 3/10/2010, 9:42 AM
Teabag @ Baby!

SHAMAN @ That was cavill for BATMAN (by the way MATT BOMER)

; D
CorndogBurglar - 3/10/2010, 9:44 AM
@ shaman

yeah man, i don't know. i think as a whole, Watchmen was better than both Batman films. its one of those touchy things. its hard to pick which is "better". although, Watchmen was one of the best translations of comic to film that we've ever seen. so that holds a lot of weight with me. Iron Man was better than both though, lol.
Shaman - 3/10/2010, 9:54 AM
CDB- IRONMAN REIGNS!!!!!! And you know, the batfilms and the watchmen film were oceans different so it is hard to pick ;)

Tea- Woops, my bad ;)
Ryguy88 - 3/10/2010, 10:06 AM
The whole DC universe idea is garbage!! Nolan has made the best superhero movies to date and what ever way he thinks is the best way to do a Superman movie is probably the best way! It toatlly makes sense not putting the two in the same universe, why would Bruce Wayne want to copy Superman in order to bring justice back to Gotham? Why hasn't anyone told him that Superman already did that? It totally ruins the entire point!
Layperson - 3/10/2010, 10:07 AM
this is good. I can get behind this.
Rosas - 3/10/2010, 10:10 AM
Photobucket
ManhuntersBastardChild - 3/10/2010, 10:11 AM
ryguy, would it make sense to see them as contemporaries? If both of these guys emerge in their respective cities simultaneously, it would make sense that they don't get to interact until they have each established themselves in their cities.

That aside, I don't think it will take a lot of work, story-tweaking or convincing audiences that the universes are one and the same. The fact is Nolan simply doesn't want to do this. For the fans of the DC universe as a whole, this sucks.
