DAY 1

Here's a brief conversation I had with a production assistant for Warner Bros' superhero film Green Lantern:

Did you hear about the rumor that Ryan [Reynold's] costume is going to be all CGI?

"Who said it's a rumor, it's how they always planned it."

Always? Ryan said he tried the suit on and it felt snug. What was that about then?

"I don't know, I'm sure they had him try something on the see how the colors worked but from the [beginning of filming] it was always going to be a CG costume. I haven't seen any of those costumes in the warehouse but they could have 'em locked up somewhere else."

Is that how they're going to do all the other character costumes?

"The aliens? From what I know they're going to be all CG. I don't even think they have the voice actors picked out yet but it's still really early. We only started filming a month ago and stuff changes here every day."

So... where do they keep all the costumes anyway?

"It's like a few blocks away from the studio. The place is huge, look:"

Oh well

I got my hopes up for what Ryan Reynolds will be wearing while in space

Y'know the regular suit
THEHAWK - 4/14/2010, 7:45 PM
I had hoped for a legit GL suit, not CGI. I hope they aren't going to pull some crap and have the suit be like glowing energy.
eviltattooedguy - 4/14/2010, 7:48 PM
This should be interesting. This will be either be very innovative and badass or look horrible and cartoon like.
Superzero - 4/14/2010, 7:50 PM
Hal Jordan drinks a beer and cheats on his wife! Er...what I meant to say was: Cool stuff. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE N.O. I'm just wondering if it's going to be the city from the comics (forget it's name) or is it going to be actually taking place in N.O.? I lived there off and on for 5 years and got to see BIG chunks of Primary Colors filmed and was actually an extra in some John Grisham movie, forget what it was called but got to meet Dustin Hoffman, pa's and other production people are always very cool to talk to/drink with. Poni: While on Burbon St. make sure to head to Howl at the Moon and The Cat's Meow...fun bars! Good luck and have fun!
InstigatorGIRL - 4/14/2010, 7:53 PM
Cool stuff man! Can't wait to hear what other stuff you found out! I am so psyched about GL.
DaenerysTargaryen - 4/14/2010, 7:53 PM
I just hope they make the costume look as awesome as possible. :) Oh and good update Poni. Can't wait for tommorow. :)
thwhtGuardian - 4/14/2010, 7:55 PM
Interesting news, I just knew the cg rumor was true. Keep up the good work multi.
ThisFan - 4/14/2010, 7:55 PM
not the costumes i want to see
InstigatorGIRL - 4/14/2010, 7:58 PM
Yeah I knew about the CG too. Geoff Johns pretty much said it was happening. I think its a cool idea. Sorry to say.
Suffertree - 4/14/2010, 8:01 PM
Ahhh Poni's boinkin' a production assistant.

You should like...work for TMZ, man.
eviltattooedguy - 4/14/2010, 8:04 PM
@IntigatorGirl..girl you are smokin!
InstigatorGIRL - 4/14/2010, 8:10 PM
@evil no I'm not. Smoking is bad for you. lol.
bonesmcgee - 4/14/2010, 8:10 PM
I don't mind if the aliens were CGI done by ILM or WETA. But since the movie is using Sony Imageworks, I'm a little worried.

They've done some decent work but they've been inconsistent with their CGI.
InstigatorGIRL - 4/14/2010, 8:13 PM
My friend is worried the costume will look like a Tron uniform. lol.
RorMachine - 4/14/2010, 8:14 PM
Ok, lets get onto the important stuff, is "Marie" hot?:)
eviltattooedguy - 4/14/2010, 8:17 PM
whos marie?
InstigatorGIRL - 4/14/2010, 8:18 PM
LMAO @Ror XD
LMAO@ Evil did you even read the article sir?
InTylerWeTrust - 4/14/2010, 8:20 PM
I don't really think an all-CGI suit is necessary, but as long as it looks good then I guess it's cool. Great scoop Multi.
eviltattooedguy - 4/14/2010, 8:21 PM
Yes but I was distracted by your pic. :}
ceramyctyle - 4/14/2010, 8:21 PM
Imma go out on a limb and say that when the film opens, and everyone sees how cool the CGI suits look, we'll all be saying "I knew it would look awesome all along, never had a doubt!"
:D
punisher23 - 4/14/2010, 8:23 PM
Great find Poni, Hope your have a good time in New Orleans.

mcgee@ I'm worried about the same thing, they should have used alien costumes with a little cgi or used a different cgi company that has a better track record.
thwhtGuardian - 4/14/2010, 8:23 PM
That's been my opinion since the start cerayctyle
DogsOfWar - 4/14/2010, 8:35 PM
Gosh, Multi, I don't know why Campbell would be upset with you!

Good stuff!
supermarioworldE - 4/14/2010, 8:50 PM
I'm a bit skeptical about the idea of a CGI suit. Seems a bit lazy and unnecesary.

Ah well. An A-list DC hero that isn't Batman or Superman is finally getting his own movie. That's more than enough to be estatic about

statechamp00 - 4/14/2010, 9:02 PM
I have had very low expectations for this movie since I heard they were casting Ryan Reynolds...
I hope GL doesn't lean on CGI like a crutch when really it should be more focused on the awesome story/characters/action.
I realize that doing space sequences and things will require CG, but CG costumes?
I'm not sure how the movie will turn out, and I will watch it, but I haven't heard anything to make me believe this film will be great.
Betty - 4/14/2010, 9:02 PM
STFU! STFU! cool, like tron cool.
Anthony3 - 4/14/2010, 9:05 PM
It has to be CG. The suit is made by the ring. He will be wearing regular clothes and then the suit just materializes onto him, its made of energy, not fabric. He doesn't go off and change clothes. Using CG is not lazy or unnecessary, it just makes sense.
OverCross - 4/14/2010, 9:09 PM
I give up on the suit if it has a flowing cape

Except for the original Green Lantern but I doubt we'll see him in this
Casinoskunk - 4/14/2010, 9:11 PM
I hope it looks better than the CG body replacement on the clones in Ep. III. It better look better than Spawn's cape and the jittery head movements on Shawn Wayans in Little Man.

The suit better look like Reynolds is wearing it!!
ceramyctyle - 4/14/2010, 9:19 PM
@Casinoskunk, I'm sorry but "The suit better look like Reynolds is wearing it!!" is a very silly statement.
$200 million budget, WB/DC tentpole film with sequels already talked about, high profile director, I'm pretty sure they're not messing around here.
Ranger14 - 4/14/2010, 9:52 PM
I don't know why people want to discount the suit just because it is CGI. CGI or not, it doesn't matter to me as long as it looks good.
thwhtGuardian - 4/14/2010, 10:11 PM
Yeah, seams are a big no-no. Also, as the animators for Superman Returns found out, it's sometimes hard to accurately duplicate the textures of some materials so if it's designed to be digital that isn't a problem.
johan02 - 4/14/2010, 11:27 PM
@Multi "I happened across a production assistant" MY A$$!!!!! your an iseder god dam it!!!! I've said it the whole time YOU BASTERD!!!!!! LOL I know you wouldn't let us down. said to hear about the full CG suit, I guess it might work ok, but I siad it in the first post thatt was about that if YOU say then it gota be true!!!

I NOW OFFICALY APOLOGIZE TO ALL THOSE I UNINTENTIONALLY OFFENED
thank you
MOGO89 - 4/14/2010, 11:58 PM
so i guess the ring will turn cg once the suit is on?
Eviltwin - 4/15/2010, 12:04 AM
I'm hoping that we at least get a little bit of practical suit to go with the CG one. To balance it out and help sell it.
RedDevil - 4/15/2010, 12:24 AM
hey InterstingJ
That John Stewart art you did is great!
Jones can be a great Stewart if he can act.
DieSwartSlak - 4/15/2010, 12:53 AM
I for one love the idea of a full CGI suit. It certainly circumvents the dilemma of finding a phone booth every time to change threads. Damn that Superman must have a lot of money to keep on buying new suits every time. Plus there's bound to be a lot of happy hobos in Metropolis.

I am sure that's how the creators intended it to be as well. Not as a physical suit but something that covers everything in the blink of an eye.

Can't wait.

Vital - 4/15/2010, 1:58 AM
I'm down and ready to go lol. As long as it's good CG I'm aboard 100%. If it looks like Hugh Jackman's claws from Wolverine I'm gonna hang myself lol.
CorndogBurglar - 4/15/2010, 4:46 AM
@ dannyrand

"Iron Man's costume is CG and looks great- it melds between the actual armour and the made up bits flawlessly."

you can't really compare the two. Iron Man's costume pretty much NEEDS to be CGI, because NOTHING else could have made his armor look as realistic, with all the moving parts. (you are right though, it does look flaawless.)

with GL, his costume might be a construct, but it still LOOKS like regular clothes. i still don't get why they would make it CGI. i understand making a CGI glowing effect around it, but the actual clothes themselves?? seems a little too much...
