Akira... An American-Made Tale?

Asian-American actors get shafted out of their own movies.

There is a petition going around to get some support for the Manga adaption Akira to get Asian-American Actors assigned to the project. Its been rumored that Chris Pine of Star Trek XI fame (reboot) is in consideration of Kaneda.

Star Treks one & only George Takei sounded off his opinion on the matter via Twitter, Akira epic fail,” he said. “All actors up for Kaneda & Tetsuo are white?” He then asked his followers to “Sign & RT the [virtual] petition.” The petition further noted, “If not in a film called Akira, for characters named Kaneda and Tetsuo, when will Asian-Americans get to star in a Warner Bros film?”

I don't mind some changes but it looks like Hollywood is going off the reservation again with this. My point is if this is going to be Americanized then why not change the names.

WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER DRAGONBALL Z FAILURE!

This is what happens all the time, how many Persians were in Prince of Persia?

But then again how many manga/anime characters look Asian?

just the thought of this film disgusts me! this film is a waste of money...you're better off trying to rerelease the anime into theaters...i'll watch that!!

hollywood doesn't have the creative fortitude anymore. "it is okay to have the asian actor as long as the mask stays on", isn't this what B. Lee was fighting and yet here we are in 2011 and still have small minded suits. go outside of the box fill the roles as they should be or make another movie filled in with your poster child.

While the idea of just putting an Asian-American actor in leads would be ideal and right, I get the trepidation that Hollywood has in doing it. But that doesn't make it right.

But its not like this is a story that is for mass appeal. Its not like the Sex and the City crowd is going to see this film, even if they cast someone like Leo.
