Can women be cast in Super Hero Movies without being Sex Symbols?

Readers,

You find yourself asking, "Where are the pictures of the hot ladies?" I find myself noticing that women are appearing as sex symbols in the comic book movies. I can only speculate if this is true. It differentiates to one's own opinion. Are they there to help sell them? They are in some of the films I've seen. Some tight clothes wearing or scantily clad. The end result is the same. I can't B.S. the fans with a B.S. article. But look at it this way. That is a big topic that we come back to. What hottie actress is going to be in this one movie or that other movie? Hmmm, to hire an actress to be just that, if she knows what she is being cast for, who would it hurt? The idea ends up lacking identity when one might think about it. Where do you draw the line in the sand? What do we really want? I leave all the ideas, suggestions, and comments to all of you.

well i look at it this way in comics female superheroes are portrayed as sex symbols with their triple d boobs and size 1 waist but then have an enormous ass only covered in a string of clothes(if you can call them that)so i figured that theyre not gonna try and change that in the movies cause they know sex sales and they can get away with it not bein out of taste because its not far from the source material.

In a word... Yes!
fadawn - 8/4/2009, 1:39 PM
Really who wants to see a fat ugly chick eating cheese burgers. Not me.

@ sapretoothtiger, nail on the head.
Frogman - 8/4/2009, 3:38 PM
XD lmao @fadawn
basically I think SabretoothTiger is right, thats the way they are shown in the comics and thus the way they're portrayed in films and i for one am not complaining as long as they can act aswell.

I think its interesting how quickly people just to say women are portrayed as sex symbols in comics and CBMs, but look at the men. Arn't they also extremely muscular and idealized? Wheres the difference?
RorMachine - 8/4/2009, 7:46 PM
Yep, its really a moot point. Sex sells..in every aspect of society..every movie, magazine, tv show, advert..you name it. Obviously a great actress should be taken seriously for her talent no matter what she looks like. But IF they happen to look pretty good AND act very well the movie will damn sure sell both! Case in point would be Charlize Theron. Gorgeous, very talented..have you ever seen her in a movie that didn't have flash a bit of leg? Wear some tight fitting cloths? Sell her on her sexuality in some way? Hell she even got naked in Monster for Gods sake.
Rumblebeast - 8/4/2009, 8:35 PM
i think it is what it is
JYCowboy - 8/4/2009, 8:36 PM
Yes,

Case in point Phantom Lady (DC) uses her sexuality (or lack of suit) as a weapon to paralize her foes. To a degree, this can be used in film for the same effect on other female characters. Do I want all female characters to use this? NO. I want a Wonder Woman casting to use both beauty and talent to make me believe the character. A balance will go further with me than a extreme of one or the other. My example of this is Jennifer Connely. Award winning performance and great beauty would make the ultimate Wonder Woman if she is devoted to the character.

GUNSMITH - 8/5/2009, 12:03 AM
ALL THE GIRLS IN XMEN ARE BEYOND HOT, I WONDER WHY? IT SELLS, THATS WHY
theboneman21 - 8/5/2009, 1:13 AM
Wonder Woman - a hooker with a lasso ie into bondage/S&M.

Heck, even Lois Lane had the whole "hot librarian" thing going on after a certain point in time.

I had this bad ass picture to add to the page here once you go inside my article, but I can't get into the area where the tutuorial is to find out. If someone can give me a quick talk to about it in an email. I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Well think about it this way, one of the only recent superhero movies that I can think of that cast a woman for her talent rather than her looks was Maggie Gyllenhal in The Dark Knight and look how that turned out. Most GIRLS that I know didn't like her in the role. Sometimes I think people forget how much sex sells to women as much as it does to men.
BmanHall - 8/5/2009, 8:05 AM
Yes, they should. If someone wants to be successful at selling a product, the seller will have to apply something that attracts the public buyer. To attract, by definition, is to arouse or compel the interest, admiration, or attention of. That being said, men and women both are portrayed as sex symbols simply because "sex" is one of the things that the majority of the buying public is attracted to.
dancingmonkey08 - 8/5/2009, 8:20 AM
SabretoothTiger had the first comment which explained everything perfectly. I agree with you completely!

And BuckyB7588 also has a very good point. Men and women seemed to be treated the same in comics

And teabag, thank you for a look at that epic ass, Im gonna have good dreams for a long time to come! lol

hot women in movies are always good, not matter what kind of movie. superhero ones just give them an excuse to use skimpy outfits or leather.
MIDAS - 8/5/2009, 11:15 AM
Look at the way the women are drawn in the comic books. What else would you expect to see in the movies? Having an average woman in the movie brings the value of the movie down. Look at Spider Man. It would be so much better if they actually had a hot Mary Jane Watson.
BillyBlack - 8/5/2009, 11:16 AM

The short answer is Yes.

Have you ever read a comic book Scopion? Honestly if it wasnt for Hugh JackMan that incredibly awful movie would have been a glaring disaster financially. As it stands its just a horrible movie. Thanks to hime lookin good and running naked through a corn field sort of. In our genre of choice the core starts with idealized iconic symbolism which is rooted in achieving some sort of perfection. Visually the actresses and actors beauty is a marker of their impending success, at least on some level. So i dont mind it, in fact i prefer it. But take this argument out of the comic arena and i will tear yer throat out before i let you belittle woman kind . peace , love and TnA

yes

Women have been sex symbols way before CBM's were being made it has just become more noticeable over the years.
Tthat's just how our world works, sex sells and everyone knows it, women are sexy as hell with their curvy bodies and slender waist's. Men are also effected by this because women are attracted to men with tight bodies, firm muscles and abs of steel.

As long as there is sex it will sell, and I foresee sex staying around for a long time.

WulfComicFan - 8/5/2009, 5:50 PM
Anyone remember the Swimsuit Issues of Image comics? I had all those for awhile. And hot damn were they poular at my school. So YES it is what it is, and will always be so. (Well as long as people are into sex anyways)!
Osiris - 8/5/2009, 6:19 PM
I remember those, I have the Danger girl, Fathom, and Darkchylde ones, maybe a Witchblade one but I'm not sure

asher1485 - 8/5/2009, 9:09 PM
you can sum it up like this "sex sells" thats the way its always been and the way it always will be. besides its not like female super heroes are perpetuating a stereotype they gorgeous and sexy but also smart witty and just as capable as thier male counterparts.
ryanallen - 8/5/2009, 11:28 PM
without question no....
Scorpioxfactor - 8/6/2009, 12:42 AM
I am beyond your touch shibazz. It saddens me that you took offense. It's just an article. Please don't take it personally. But that's your opinion. You're entitled it and I asked for it. But threats against someone in this fun & interesting website will just start to turn it into someplace where people won't want to go, or worse, who knows. But I sure felt alot of negativity from you and it wasn't appreciated.

Just the time we live in brother...what was once considered "modest" is now considered "prude" and what was once considered "sexy" is not considered "modest" and what was once considered "slutty" is now considered "sexy"...to quote Bats "Escalation"
